(AP) — The Democratic chairman of the Senate Homeland Security Committee and a senior Republican senator expressed concern Wednesday over an alleged incident involving a drunken Secret Service agent in connection with President Barack Obama’s overseas trip to the Netherlands.

On Sunday, the agency called three agents home from the Netherlands just before Obama’s arrival for talks with foreign leaders in The Hague. One agent had been found inebriated inside a hotel, according to reports.

Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., the Homeland Security Committee chairman, said Wednesday he is “troubled by the reports regarding the behavior of a few Secret Service agents serving on the president’s detail in the Netherlands,” according to a statement. His office said he’s asked the Secret Service for more information about the episode.

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in a statement that the incident “shows that the agency has to deal with some in its ranks who fail to respect the important job the agency is tasked with.” While he said that he appreciated “swift action” by Secret Service Director Julia Pierson, the senator added that “it looks like she’s still got work to do to regain the trust of the American people.”

The latest embarrassing incident involving a drunken Secret Service agent comes a year into the term of a new agency director who already has been confronted with a handful of incidents since the Colombia prostitution scandal nearly two years ago. In that episode, 13 agents and officers were accused of partying with female foreign citizens at a hotel in the seaside resort of Cartagena, where they were staying before Obama’s arrival.

Agents can consume alcohol only “in moderate amounts while off duty” or on temporary assignment, according to an updated Secret Service professional conduct manual obtained by The Associated Press. They also can’t drink within 10 hours of reporting for duty.

A Secret Service spokesman on Wednesday declined to comment on the incident, except to say that three agents were sent home for “disciplinary reasons.” White House spokesman Jay Carney, speaking to reporters traveling with the president, said Obama had been briefed on the incident and supports Pierson’s zero-tolerance approach.

“The president believes, as he has said in the past, that everybody representing the United States of America overseas needs to hold himself or herself to the highest standards,” Carney said.

Obama named Pierson as the agency’s first female director last March in a sign he wanted to change the agency’s culture and restore public confidence in its operations. Since then, Pierson has had to face some alleged misbehavior on the elite service, which is charged with protecting the president and investigating financial fraud.

In November, two Secret Service agents were removed from Obama’s detail after one was allegedly discovered trying to re-enter a woman’s hotel room because he left a bullet from his weapon behind. In a subsequent probe, investigators came across sexually suggestive emails that the agent and another supervisor had sent to a female subordinate, The Washington Post reported.

The agency disputes that recent reports of misbehavior is indicative of a widespread trend. And an inspector general’s report made public in December concluded there was no evidence of widespread misconduct, in line with the service’s longstanding assertion that it has no tolerance for inappropriate behavior.

Pierson said in a letter to former Acting Inspector General Charles Edwards that, while the agency agreed with the report’s 14 recommendations, she was concerned about how the survey was conducted and its results.

Secret Videotape of Obama Cabinet Meeting Unveiled!

The headline of this post might not be completely honest. Indeed, if you asked me to grade the accuracy of my title, I’ll admit right away that it falls into the “if you like your plan, you can keep your plan” category of mendacity.

Krugman WeatherBut I’m only prevaricating to set the stage for some satire about Keynesian economics.

But this satire is based on a very bizarre reality. Advocates of Keynesian economics such as Paul Krugman have claimed that war is stimulus for the economy and that it would be good if we were threatened by an alien invasion. As such, it doesn’t take too much imagination to think that conversations like this may have taken place inside the Obama White House.

Particularly since Keynes himself thought it would be good for growth if the government buried money in the ground.

So enjoy this satire from The Onion.

By the way, Krugman also said the 9-11 terrorist attacks would “do some economic good.”

So the folks at The Onion need to step it up if they want to keep pace.

Now let’s share a serious video.

I’ve written before about how the Food and Drug Administration’s risk-averse policies lead to needless deaths.

D’oh! John Doe prosecutors claim secrecy protection – after filing secret documents

By M.D. Kittle | Wisconsin Reporter

MADISON, Wis. – The comedy of errors apparently continues from prosecutors-turned-defendants in a civil rights lawsuit filed against them by a fed-up conservative political activist.

Again, the mishap involves confusion over apparently sealed court documents.

In their legal response to a motion to dismiss the Democrat-launched John Doe investigation into conservatives, the prosecutors’ legal counsel claim that the probe’s “Secrecy Orders” as well as Wisconsin law concerning such secret inquiries “limit Defendants’ ability to make a full evidentiary showing as to why Plaintiffs’ motion should be denied.”

.

OOPS, THEY DID IT AGAIN: Attorneys for prosecutors in a politically charged John Doe probe have filed court documents in a civil rights lawsuit, documents they claim they could not fire, according to a legal response filed Friday by the conservative suing the prosecutors.

In other words, the prosecutors are asking Milwaukee Federal Judge Rudolph Randa who is hearing the lawsuit to deny Eric O’Keefe’s motion to stop an investigation alleged to be robbing conservative groups of their First Amendment rights, but the prosecutors can’t show evidence as to why.

There’s just one problem, as O’Keefe’s attorneys point out in their response: The defendants have already filed with the court the materials they claim they cannot disclose to the court.

The defendants include Democrat Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm, his lieutenants, Assistant DA’s Bruce Landgraf and David Robles, John Doe Special Prosecutor Francis Schmitz, and Dean Nickel, a shadowy contracted investigator involved in the probe. Retired Judge Gregory Peterson, the presiding judge in the John Doe, also is named as a defendant in the civil rights suit.

In a scheduling conference on the lawsuit Thursday, the prosecutors’ attorneys repeatedly told the judge that Wisconsin law bars disclosure in the lawsuit of materials covered by the John Doe Secrecy Order, according to the plaintiffs’ motion to amend Randa’s scheduling order in the case.  They claimed “disclosure of such information in this litigation at this time could subject Defendants to criminal prosecution, that they were uncertain that this risk could be ameliorated by an order of (the federal court), and that they preferred to seek action by the John Doe Judge or other state officials.”

The prosecutors want more time to make their to make their case against O’Keefe’s motion for a preliminary injunction against the secret probe.

But the prosecutors’ attorneys have already filed documents – under seal – with the court that they claim must not be filed with the court on penalty of law, according to O’Keefe’s response. The exhibits filed include “various materials covered by the John Doe Secrecy Order.” Those documents apparently are sealed but available to the judge, according to the response.

All of the materials were documents the defendants told the judge they could not use to show why the motion for preliminary injunction should be dismissed.

The judge granted the prosecutors’ request, giving their attorneys until April 15 to file a supplemental response. Randa did, however, set a hearing on the preliminary injunction motion for April 30. That hearing is contingent on what Randa decides to do about the defendants’ motion to dismiss O’Keefe’s entreaty to shut down the John Doe probe. That decision is expected to be issued on April 14.

Milwaukee attorney Samuel Leib, who is representing Chisholm, Landgraf and Robles, did not return a call seeking comment. Neither did attorney Randall Crocker, who is serving as legal counsel for Schmitz. The prosecutors’ attorneys are being paid $ 175 an hour by the state – aka Wisconsin taxpayers.

David Rivkin, attorney for O’Keefe and the Wisconsin Club for Growth, another plaintiff in the civil rights suit, declined to comment on the plaintiffs’ response.

Earlier this week, Nickel’s legal team did not properly redact large sections of their legal response, information supposed to have been kept out of the public eye. As first reported by Wisconsin Reporter, the information became visible when copying and pasting them into a Word document, Wisconsin Reporter discovered.

The documents unveiled a previously sealed decision by Peterson. The judge, in late January stayed part of his own ruling ordering John Doe prosecutors to return private property seized in raids on several conservative targets. The judge has quashed several subpoenas, ruling the prosecution did not provide probable cause in carrying them out.

“The issue in this case is the scope of Wisconsin’s campaign finance laws. The State’s theory is that various parties engaged in illegal coordinated activities during the recent recall elections. I concluded, however, that the coordinated activities are not prohibited under the statutes,” the judge wrote in a sealed document quoted in Nickel’s loosely redacted response.

Nickel’s response has since been properly redacted, but the redacted information still shows up on Wisconsin Reporter’s PDF link.

VIDEO: ‘Obama Assassination’ Cartoon Prompts Secret Service Visit

schuyler

alienreality
The pattern I see in these “threats to the president” are that our president is so corrupt, dishonest, and so pathetically morally and ethically bankrupt, that so many people are making these types of statements through various methods.. Says a lot about the current political state when so many people are doing these things.

Must be embarrassing to the president to be schooled so often that his actions are despised so much. And yet he continues on with the destruction of America.

The problem with this statement is that it reflects myopia and a lack of historical perspective. The same exact thing has been said in the past about nearly every president. In the campaign between John Adams (#2) and Thomas Jefferson (#3), for example, the rhetoric used would make present-day hyperbolic political campaigns seem tame and polite in comparison. You talk about the “destruction of America,” well, Lincoln actually succeeded, according to half the country at the time, and he was killed for it–after several unsuccessful attempts.

So threats are nothing new and it has nothing to do with the current incumbent. This is about the Presidency, not the President, but even so, he ought to be free of risk from crazed maniacs filled with hatred or who think killing someone famous will get them a date with Jody Foster. And, believe me, I am no fan of Obama or his policies. He’s a complete disaster, pure and simple, but I hope he and his successors live to a ripe old age.

My points were that people wouldn’t even be doing these things if the president wasn’t such a threat to everyone else. Just like Pol Pot was a threat to everyone else.
Our president shares a ton of similarities to the ousted Cambodian leader. Except he might not achieve as high a body count as Pol Pot, but time will tell.

I predict he will even get to live a life after his term expires, and live in luxury and free from any worry of accountability, just like the ousted Cambodian leader is doing right now.

Only a president can make himself “free from threat” by being an ethical and moral leader, and I think we all know that Obama isn’t going to ever be that..
So in my opinion, these things are happening because of his own actions. Are people nutz for threatening him still? Of course, but I am just pointing out the cause of it all. I am not saying I agree with it happening though..
I am just making these statements as an interested observer.

Add: And these threats have everything to do with the current incumbent, or are these people just targeting him randomly?
Again, I say I don’t agree with it, I am only seeing it happening..

Financial Crisis a Joke at Secret Wall Street Party

(Newser) – After ruining the global economy, why not celebrate with a party that features homophobic jokes and musical acts in drag? That’s what reporter Kevin Roose discovered when he sneaked into the 2012 annual black-tie induction ceremony of Kappa Beta Phi, a secret Wall Street fraternity that’s been around since 1929. Big cheeses like billionaire investor Wilbur Ross, AIG CEO Bob Benmosche, and former Bear Stearns chair Alan “Ace” Greenberg took in the event’s camaraderie and heavy drinking at New York’s St. Regis Hotel ballroom in 2012. Among the lowlights:

  • A private-equity executive at Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe told jokes like, Q: “What’s the biggest difference between Barney Frank and a Fenway Frank?” A: “Barney Frank comes in different-size buns.”

  • Bill Mulrow, top Blackstone Group executive, donned tie-dye clothes to portray a “liberal radical” while a hedge fund manager berated him: “Bill, look at you! You’re pathetic, you liberal! You need a bath!”

  • Investment banking CEO Warren Stephens hit the stage draped in a Confederate flag and sang a financial-crisis song to the tune of “Dixie”: “In Wall Street land we’ll take our stand, said Morgan and Goldman. But first we better get some loans, so quick, get to the Fed, man.”

Writing about the party in his new book, Young Money (excerpted at the Daily Intelligencer), Roose describes how the Wall Street types eventually spotted him and shuttled him into the hall—where they promised to take his calls if he “could just keep their privacy in mind.” Obviously, Roose didn’t play ball. His take-away from the event? “The upper ranks of finance are composed of people who have completely divorced themselves from reality. No self-aware and socially conscious Wall Street executive would have agreed to be part of a group whose tacit mission is to make light of the financial sector’s foibles.” Click for the full excerpt, including juicy photos and audio from the party.

‘Secret dealing’? Emails show cozy relationship between EPA, environmental groups

Fox News – by John Roberts

Newly disclosed emails suggest senior policy officials at the Environmental Protection Agency and environmental groups are working closely to kill the Keystone XL pipeline, critics say.

“These damning emails make it clear that the Obama administration has been actively trying to stop this important project for years,” Sen. John Barrasso, R-Wyo., who has long advocated for the Canada-to-Texas pipeline’s construction, said in a statement to Fox News.

The emails were obtained under a Freedom of Information Act request by the Energy and Environment Legal Institute. In one communication, Lena Moffit of the Sierra Club wrote to three senior policy staffers at the EPA, including Michael Goo, who was then the associate administrator for policy.

“Thanks so much for taking the time to meet with us on Keystone XL yesterday,”she wrote. ”Let me know if I can be helpful in any way — particularly in further identifying those opportunities for EPA to engage that don’t involve ‘throwing your body across the tracks,’ as Michael put it.”

EELI senior legal fellow Chris Horner told Fox News that as a government agency, EPA couldn’t be seen as overtly trying to kill Keystone, but was reaching out to environmental groups for other ideas on how to do it.

“On its face,” Horner told Fox News, “it smacks of classic secret dealing and an uncomfortably close working relationship and one that is known to these parties, but quite plainly not advertised to the public.”

Barrasso was less diplomatic. “Despite the fact that Keystone XL has bipartisan support in Congress and from governors, environmental extremists inside and out of the administration are working behind closed doors to kill it,” he said.

Many EPA staffers — including Goo — came from the environmental movement. Goo, who is now at the Department of Energy’s policy shop, was with the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Horner said many EPA staffers share a policy agenda with environmental groups, a common cause illuminated in the emails his group obtained.

“This series of correspondence plainly indicates that you’ve got an agency that’s made up its mind — working with allies with whom it is ideologically and substantively aligned on this — trying to find ways to advance their argument without being too obvious about it,” Horner told Fox News.

Emails previously obtained by Horner’s group reveal similar agenda-sharing regarding coal. There are dozens of exchanges on the just-released regulations regarding coal-fired power plants.

In one email, John Coequyt, head of Sierra’s “beyond coal” campaign, wrote to Goo and another EPA staffer in an apparent attempt to pressure EPA into adopting regulations so strict that coal plants that already received construction permits could not be built.

“Attached is a list of plants that the companies shelved because of uncertainty around GHG regulations. If a standard is set that these plants could meet, there is a not small chance that they (sic) company could decide to revive the proposal,” Coequyt wrote.

In another email to Goo and Alex Barron of EPA’s climate office, Coequyt responded comically to an August 2012 article that quoted now-EPA administrator Gina McCarthy as saying the new regulations would not kill coal.

“Pants on fire,” wrote Coequyt

Other communications arranged meetings between Goo and Coequyt at the Starbucks in the JW Marriott hotel on Pennsylvania Avenue, close to the EPA — an attempt, charges Horner, to discuss issues without having to sign into the EPA building. And there are numerous requests from environmental groups to meet with EPA staffers.

There is also evidence, said Horner, that EPA officials sought to keep their deliberations with environmental groups out of the public record by using private email accounts and back-channel communications.

In one such exchange, James Martin, who was the EPA’s Region 8 administrator, exchanged ideas with the Sierra Club’s chief legal counsel Vickie Patton on where to hold public hearings on new coal regulations. Martin used a “.me” account instead of his official EPA server.

Martin resigned in February of 2013 in a storm of controversy over using personal email to conduct official communications.

Many of the emails provided to Fox News have been redacted. The EPA claimed they show the “deliberative process.” Now that the proposed regulations on coal have been published, Horner and the Energy and Environment Legal Institute plan to go to court to obtain unredacted versions.

John Roberts joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in January 2011 as a senior national correspondent and is based in the Atlanta bureau.
