Tom Friedman: Emanuel Left White House For Chicago Because Of "Unpleasant" Social Media

This is why they pay him the big bucks folks. Thomas Friedman wants the viewers of Face the Nation to believe that Rahm Emanuel decided to leave the White House and run for mayor of Chicago because of some meanies on social media and blogs. I guess all of that went away for him once he was mayor instead of Obama’s chief of staff.

This was during yet another of the countless discussions by our beltway Villagers about how our the Republicans in Congress might have cooperated with President Obama if he’d just learned how to schmooze with them and kiss their butts a little more, like President Johnson did back in the day. Yeah, that would have made all the difference with this crop of Republicans we’ve got in office today. And then we’re treated to this nonsense by Friedman:

Man Who Shot at White House Sentenced to 25 Years

An Idaho man who pleaded guilty to firing an assault rifle at the White House in 2011 has been sentenced to 25 years in prison.

A federal judge in Washington sentenced Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez on Monday.

Prosecutors had asked he spend 27 ½ years in prison for the shooting. No one was injured, but prosecutors say Ortega-Hernandez hit the executive mansion about eight times and did nearly $ 100,000 in damage.

Ortega-Hernandez’s lawyers argued he was suffering from extreme depression and mental stress at the time of the shooting and was under the misguided belief that Armageddon was coming. They asked for a 10-year sentence.

Prosecutors initially charged Ortega-Hernandez with attempting to assassinate President Barack Obama but agreed to drop the charge as part of a plea deal last year.

Russia-Ukraine Agree “Truce” Until March 21st; White House Warns Putin Stop Playing “Russian Roulette”

Embedded image permalinkZero Hedge – by Tyler Durden

President Putin has started a game of Russian roulette and I think the United States and the West have to be very clear in their response,” states Sen. Foreign Relations Committed Chair Robert Menendez among a slew of Sunday morning talk-show rhetoric from US politicians with the White House’s Dan Pfeiffer adding “President Putin has a choice about what he’s going to do here. Is he going to continue to further isolate himself, further hurt his economy, further diminish Russian influence in the world, or is he going to do the right thing?” As the “sham referendum” continues, Reuters, however, reports that Ukraine’s acting defense minister believes Russia and Ukraine have agree a truce until March 21st.

Sunday Morning Talk-Show Rhetoric… (via AP)

If Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t back down in Crimea, he will face penalties from the West that will hurt the Russian economy and diminish Moscow’s influence in the world, the White House said Sunday.

White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said the Obama administration’s top priority is supporting the new Ukrainian government “in every way possible.” He also said the United States would not recognize the results of a referendum taking place in Crimea Sunday on whether it should become part of Russia.

Pfeiffer said everything that Russia has done in Crimea has been a violation of international law and bad for stability in the region.

President Putin has a choice about what he’s going to do here. Is he going to continue to further isolate himself, further hurt his economy, further diminish Russian influence in the world, or is he going to do the right thing?” Pfeiffer said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

President Putin has started a game of Russian roulette and I think the United States and the West have to be very clear in their response because he will calculate about how far he can go,” said Sen. Robert Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Menendez appeared on Fox News Sunday along with the ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee. Corker said the U.S. and Europe were entering a “defining moment” in their relationship with Russia.

Putin will continue to do this. He did it in Georgia a few years ago. He’s moved into Crimea and he will move into other places unless we show that long-term resolve.”

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut returned early Sunday from meetings in Ukraine. He called an annexation vote taking place in Crimea a “sham referendum.” He said that Ukrainians he talked to, both inside the government and outside, said war could occur if Russia attempts to annex more territory. They indicated that “If Russia really does decide to move beyond Crimea it’s going to be bloody and the fight may be long,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

But it appears truce has been reached for now…

The defense ministries of Ukraine and Russia have agreed on a truce in Crimea until March 21, Ukraine’s acting defense minister said on Sunday.

An agreement has been reached with (Russia’s) Black Sea Fleet and the Russian Defense Ministry on a truce in Crimea until March 21,” Ihor Tenyukh told journalists on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting.

No measures will be taken against our military facilities in Crimea during that time. Our military sites are therefore proceeding with a replenishment of reserves.

As Ukrainian armed forces appear resigned to the loss:

No confirmation as yet from the Russian authorities… which, it would appear, merely gives Putin more time to arrange his military pieces since for sure he shows no signs of backing down… as the tanks keep rolling

White House: 4.2 million signed up for Obamacare through February

President Barack Obama smiling and holding

With open enrollment for Obamacare ending March 31, the administration has announced that it’s much closer to its goal of 6 million enrollees. A healthy chunk of the 4.2 million applicants are aged 18-35.

About 940,000 people selected Obamacare insurance plans in February, bringing to 4.2 million the total number of people opting for health coverage in the law’s insurance exchanges since the enrollment opened in October.

About a quarter of the sign-ups over the first five months of enrollment were adults between ages 18 and 35 – a key demographic sought by insurers to help offset the cost of covering older, typically sicker enrollees. More than four in five people signing up qualified for subsidies through tax credits.

Women continued to enroll at a disproportionately higher rate than men – a 55-45 percent split. Nearly two-thirds of all sign-ups selected mid-level “silver” level plans that cover about 70 percent of their enrollees’ costs.

An additional 4.4 million people have been found eligible for Medicaid and CHIP through state and federal marketplaces. So that’s 8.6 million people the Republicans want to take health care away from.

The White House Hosts Its First-Ever Student Film Festival

Back in November, we asked K-12 students across the country to create short films on the role that technology plays in their classrooms. We asked them to tell us why technology is so important, and how it will change the educational experience for kids in the future.

And they responded with nearly 3,000 films.

Today, in collaboration with the American Film Institute, we hosted more than a dozen of the young filmmakers at the first-ever White House Student Film Festival, where we presented our 16 official selections. Special guests included Kal Penn, Bill Nye, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, along with Conan O’Brien who addressed the students by video.

To kick things off, President Obama addressed the attendees and told the young filmmakers how great their movies were:

[I]n my official capacity as President, let me just say these movies are awesome. Like all great movies, yours do something special — they tell a story. They help us understand, in this case, the amazing things that are going on in classrooms and how technology is empowering our students and broadening their imaginations and challenging them to dream bigger and reach further.

The President also talked briefly about his ConnectED initiative, which aims to connect 99 percent of America’s students to next-generation, high-speed Internet over the next five years. He announced $ 400 million in new commitments from Adobe and Prezi to make free software available to teachers and students, helping introduce creative learning materials to America’s classrooms. Coupled with the $ 750 million in commitments that the President announced earlier this month, private-sector leaders have pledged – in February alone – to invest more than $ 1 billion in America’s students.

Read his full remarks here.

Michelle Obama To Star In Parks And Recreation

Updated: 11:49am UK, Friday 28 February 2014

Michelle Obama is to appear alongside the cast of Parks And Recreation in the sitcom’s season six finale.

The First Lady will take a trip to the fictional Indiana town of Pawnee, where she will tell residents how to beat obesity.

Her office said she will feature alongside the show’s star, Amy Poehler, in an episode which will air in the US on April 24.

The show’s Twitter account said: “It’s time to get real about Pawnee’s obesity”, in a reference to the First Lady’s campaign for healthy living.

Poehler plays excitable mid-level bureaucrat Leslie Knope who works in the parks department in Pawnee. The show also stars Rashida Jones, Chris Pratt, Nick Offerman and Rob Lowe.

Poehler lent Mrs Obama’s campaign a hand earlier this week when she appeared at a “Let’s Move” event in Miami, where the First Lady joked that she and Poehler are best friends.

Mrs Obama won’t be the first White House figure to appear on the show. Vice President Joe Biden made a cameo in 2012, while Senators John McCain, Olympia Snowe and Barbara Boxer have also guest starred.

"Knock that white boy out"

(WOIO-TV) Cleveland authorities have made several arrests following the mob beating of a disabled Army veteran by a group of teenagers.

Last Friday, the victim, Matthew Robinson, was surrounded by between six and eight teenagers while riding the RTA Healthline. Robinson told WOIO that he was attacked by the teens, then robbed of his possessions.

During the attack, the teens made several derogatory remarks about Robinson.

Black mobs routinely terrorize cities across the U.S., but the media and government are silent. Read the detailed account of rampant racial crime in “White Girl Bleed A Lot: The Return of Racial Violence to America and How the Media Ignore It.”

“What they were saying was, ‘Knock that boy out!’ ‘White boy.’ ‘Cracker,’” he was quoted as saying about the incident. “They were saying, ‘Knock that white boy out.’”
