Sulfur reduction in gasoline another EPA rule for right-wingers to bellyache about:
The Environmental Protection Agency on Monday released a rulemaking to lower the amount of sulfur in gasoline and significantly reduce air pollution from automobile emissions.
According to EPA, the rule will slash atmospheric concentrations of smog and soot by requiring refiners to cut back on sulfur concentrations by more than 60 percent in gasoline blends. The standards also set limits on tailpipe emissions from automobiles.

“These standards are a win for public health, a win for our environment, and a win for our pocketbooks,” EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy said in a statement. “We’re continuing to build on the Obama Administration’s broader clean fuels and vehicles efforts that cut carbon pollution, clean the air we breathe, and save families money at the pump.”

Supporters of the measure say it would protect parents who inadvertently commit a felony by bringing their guns while picking up their children. Opponents worry easier access to guns could promote school shootings.

Europe’s floods could quadruple by 2050:
The UK has been hit hard by major flooding over the last few months, weather one Met Office scientist called the “most exceptional period of rainfall in 248 years.” Now, new research says extreme floods could become more common in Europe by 2050, causing the financial losses from these weather events to quadruple.
The study, published Sunday in Nature Climate Change, found that instances of very extreme floods now occur around once every 50 years in Europe but could shorten to every 30 years by 2050, and that instances of extreme weather-related damage that now occur every 16 years could occur every 10. That means that Europe’s financial losses related to flooding, which now total about 4.9 billion euros a year, could increase almost 380 percent to 23.5 billion euros by 2050.

Idaho House panel backs guns on campus

BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A bill to allow students, staff and visitors to carry guns on Idaho’s college campuses passed out of a legislative committee Friday afternoon, despite objections from students, multiple police chiefs and leaders of all eight of the state’s public colleges.

The measure would allow retired law enforcement officers and those with Idaho’s new enhanced concealed carry permit to bring their firearms onto campus. Concealed weapons would still be barred from dormitories, stadiums and concert halls.

The 11-3 party-line vote sends the issue forward to debate on the House floor. The bill passed the Senate earlier this month.

Bryan Lovell, president of the Fraternal Order of Police and a Bonneville Sherriff’s deputy, said people should have the right to defend themselves, even on a college campus.

“There are a lot of concealed weapons permit holders out there, and the reason they get that is because they want to protect themselves,” Lovell said. “They don’t want to be caught in a fishbowl if there’s an active shooter.”

If the measure becomes law, Idaho would join six other states with provisions — either from lawmakers or dictated by court decisions — that allow concealed carry on campus: Colorado, Kansas, Mississippi, Oregon, Utah, and Wisconsin, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Utah is the only state with a specific law that forbids universities from banning concealed carry at any of its 10 public institutions.

Those who testified Friday before the House State Affairs Committee were overwhelmingly in opposition to the bill, as were protesters who gathered on the Capitol steps during a Thursday rally.

But Kelby Monks, a Boise State student and son of committee member Rep. Jason Monks, R-Meridian, told the committee that carrying a weapon in a classroom could stop a would-be mass shooter quickly — even while police were still minutes away.

“It does not take more than 30 seconds to empty out an entire clip,” he said, adding that concerns about law enforcement confusing good Samaritans with criminal shooters during a crisis situation are overblown. “I’d rather die and be shot by a police officer than have an entire auditorium of my classmates killed,” he said.

But some university heads worry a loophole in the bill will allow students with the concealed carry permit to openly carry firearms anywhere — even in places ruled off-limits by the bill.

That might not be the proponents’ intention, said State Board of Education member Rod Lewis, a lawyer, but he believes the bill will likely be interpreted by judges as allowing open carry on campus. Such situations could make it impossible to differentiate whether someone walking across the campus quad with an assault rifle is a criminal shooter — or simply heading to class.

Not everybody arrived at Lewis’ conclusion.

For instance, Idaho’s Assistant Chief Deputy Attorney General Brian Kane told the committee that he doesn’t believe the bill would bar colleges from banning open carry, even as concealed carry is allowed.

Boise State president Bob Kustra said lawmakers were ignoring the objections of those who would be most affected by the legislation: people on his and seven other public college and university campuses across the state.

“I’m very uncomfortable with the thought of our campus and others in Idaho being the testing grounds and our students, faculty and visitors the unwilling participants in an experiment with an unpredictable outcome.”

John Gannon, one of three Democrats on the committee who voted against the bill, said he opposed ramming legislation through before such major questions had been settled. He also disagreed with passing a bill those affected had turned out in droves to speak against.

But majority Republicans including Rep. Ken Andrus, of Lava Hot Springs, won out with arguments including that the measure would allow people on campus to protect themselves against violent crimes. If people even suspect somebody on campus is carrying a weapon, Republicans said, they’ll be less likely engage in violent conduct.

FBI Report Once Again Confirms What We Already Knew About Guns

BELLEVUE, Wash., Feb. 25, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ – The FBI’s semi-annual uniform crime data for the first half of 2013 confirms once again what the firearms community already knew, that violent crime has continued to decline while gun sales have continued to climb, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said today.

The report, issued last week, says murders declined 6.9 percent from the first half of 2012, while aggravated assaults dropped by 6.6 percent nationwide and robberies were down 1.8 percent. Forcible rapes declined 10.6 percent from the same period in 2012 and overall, violent crime fell by 10.6 percent in non-metropolitan counties and 3.6 percent in metropolitan counties.

“This new information reinforces the notion that not only do guns save lives, their presence in the hands and homes of law-abiding citizens just might be a deterrent to crime,” observed CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb. “The National Shooting Sports Foundation has been reporting a steady increase in firearm sales for the past few years. Taken as a whole, one cannot help but conclude that the predictions from gun prohibitionists that more guns leads to more crime have been consistently wrong.”

Gottlieb said the tired argument from the anti-gun lobby that more firearms in the hands of private citizens would result in sharp increases in violence have run out of traction. Not only has the decline in crime corresponded with an increase in gun sales, it also coincides with a steady rise in the number of citizens obtaining concealed carry licenses and permits, he noted.

“The FBI report says burglaries and auto theft have also decreased,” Gottlieb said, “and it is impossible to look at this pattern and not suggest that increased gun ownership just might be one contributing factor. Gun prohibitionists would, of course, dismiss that suggestion as poppycock, but you can bet your life savings that if the data was reversed, and violent crime had risen, the gun control lobby would be rushing to every available microphone declaring that guns were to blame.

“This continuing pattern brings up a pertinent question,” he concluded. “If the gun ban lobby has been so wrong about more guns resulting in more crime, what else have they been wrong about? The word ‘everything’ comes to mind.”

More Guns Means More, Not Fewer, Calls To The Police

Roy Edroso discovers a new level of self-delusion emerging from gun nuts, who are convincing themselves that they’re somehow how less “dependent” on government because of their phallic death totems. They’re all in a frenzy having to double down after a gun nut in Florida named Michael Dunn murdered a teenage boy named Jordan Davis for playing loud music, and then citing “stand your ground” in order to get away with it. (He was nonetheless convicted of three attempted murder charges, because even a bunch of racists on a Florida jury can’t justify unloading into a car that’s driving away as “self-defense”.) That means worshipping and idolizing guns in increasingly comical ways. So David French painted this picture of gun nuts as these people who somehow live apart from the mechanisms of police and other emergency services, as independent operators.

The protected class has a different view. The protected class is a dependent class — not economically dependent of course, but dependent on the state in perhaps a more fundamental way (for their very lives) – and like members of other dependent classes, they are terrified of flaws in the state’s protective apparatus. Walled off from gun culture, they read the occasional, aberrant story of (legal) gun-owner stupidity or recklessness and cower in fear of a nonexistent threat. (While of course blithely sending their kids off to far more dangerous activities, like swimming in neighbors’ pools or riding in neighbors’ cars).

Of course, the major flaw in this fantasy is that gun nuts are actually more, not less, likely to have to deal with the police. If your attitude is shoot first, it’s not like the cops won’t be called when you fire that gun. Ask Michael Dunn or George Zimmerman. The major difference is that if you act like the “protected” class that French has so much disdain for, odds are much lower that you’re going to shoot an innocent person in a bout of paranoid racist idiocy. So there’s that. But the notion that we can somehow get past the need for policing if everyone just arms themselves is painfully stupid. Someone has to sort out all those gunshot deaths and woundings and what caused what, and that someone is the police. Since they’re getting called anyway, it seems wise to call them before someone ends up dead, not after, so point to the “protected” class on that one.

And that’s just when we’re talking confrontations between strangers. (And let’s be blunt, neither Zimmerman nor Dunn would have taken it upon themselves to confront random young men minding their own business if it wasn’t because they were itching for a reason to use that gun.) Having a gun in your house increases the likelihood of accident, suicide, and domestic murder, all of which, yep, get the cops called on you. Just having a gun go off accidentally without hitting anyone often results in having a police report filed.

Because of this, Fox said he “trusts [MDA and MAIG] would support a national helmet law as quickly as a gun restriction.”

According to USA Today, the report by MDA and MAIG claims “44 shootings” took place in schools since the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary in December 2012. Rather than argue with that figure, Fox shows that it is “lower than two decades ago when gang violence was especially problematic at school settings.”

In other words, there is a downward trend.

And because of this trend, Fox warned that coating schools with cameras and metal detectors and practicing lockdown drills “not only fail to prevent some teenager or adult determined to wreak havoc on innocent children and their dedicated teachers, but they send the wrong and excessively scary message concerning the risk.”

As Breitbart News reported on December 17, 2012, Fox has been studying “mass shootings” since the 1980s. Following Sandy Hook, he said, “There is no pattern, there is no increase.” He said such attacks seem prevalent because of the amount of media attention given them.

Mayor: Nationwide Gun Confiscation Is Goal of Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. mayor says he left the group over confiscation plans

A current New York mayor has publicly announced his decision to leave Mayors Against Illegal Guns because the gun control group demands an all-out “confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens.”

Former New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg co-founded Mayors Against Illegal Guns in 2006 to promote gun control.

In an announcement published by his city’s newspaper, Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Mayor John C. Tkazyik said he quit the group after realizing it was simply a vehicle for Michael Bloomberg to “promote his personal gun-control agenda.”

“It did not take long to realize that MAIG’s agenda was much more than ridding felons of illegal guns,” he stated. “Under the guise of helping mayors facing a crime and drug epidemic, MAIG intended to promote confiscation of guns from law-abiding citizens.”

“I don’t believe, never have believed and never will believe that public safety is enhanced by encroaching on our right to bear arms and I will not be a part of any organization that does.”

Tkazyik also pointed out that Chicago’s extremely high crime rates are undeterred by the city’s highly restrictive gun laws.

“Depriving law-abiding citizens of their right to own firearms only makes them more vulnerable,” he added.

Tkazyik’s announcement is a stark contrast to the rhetoric of other politicians who want to grossly violate human rights.

At a gun control event earlier this year, Austin, Texas City Council Member Mike Martinez admitted that gun control is simply a step-by-step process to completely eliminate the Second Amendment.

While pointing at a sign held by a protestor which read “Stop Gun Ban,” Martinez said that “someone needs to inform him that there is no gun ban currently, but because of the work we’re doing today, we will make [his] sign legitimate shortly.”

“So you hang on to that [sign],” he said to a cheering crowd of gun control advocates.

And in a flashback to 1995, Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Ca.) told 60 Minutes that she wanted to outright ban all firearms owned by Americans.

“If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an outright ban, picking up every one of them … ‘Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in,’ I would have done it,” she said.

This is the true intent of gun control, even though many of its advocates whitewash the truth with a variety of propaganda techniques or by just simply being ignorant.

For example, the organizers for the event at which Martinez spoke told reporters that they didn’t want to ban guns even though that is exactly what Martinez demanded in his speech.

Gun control advocates constantly parrot deceptive phrases such as “common sense solutions” and “we don’t want to ban guns” when selling their agenda which will only lead to the complete disarmament of the population by authoritarians.

Fortunately, on the other hand, Mayor Tkazyik is joining an ever-increasing list of public officials who have denounced gun control.

Last month, Detroit’s Police Chief James Craig told reporters that legal gun owners deter crime.

“Coming from California, where it takes an act of Congress to get a concealed weapon permit, I got to Maine, where they give out lots of Carrying Concealed Weapon [permits], and I had a stack of CCW permits I was denying; that was my orientation,” he said. “I changed my orientation real quick; Maine is one of the safest places in America.”

“Clearly, suspects knew that good Americans were armed.”

And last year, Erie Co., N.Y. Sheriff Timothy B. Howard publicly announced that his department would not enforce New York’s latest gun control law, the SAFE Act.

“It’s an unenforceable law and I believe it will ultimately be declared unconstitutional,” he said to reporters. “Do you want law enforcement people that will say ‘I will do this because I’m told to do this, even if I know it’s wrong?’”

It is refreshing to see elected officials serving their constituents while also respecting the Bill of Rights.
