Egyptian court sentences 529 Muslim Brotherhood members to death

An Egyptian court sentenced 529 members of the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood to death for murder and other offences on Monday, in a sharp escalation of a crackdown on the movement that is likely to fuel instability.

Family members stood outside the courthouse screaming after the verdict — the biggest mass death sentence handed out in Egypt‘s modern history, defense lawyers said.

Turmoil has deepened since the army overthrew Egypt’s first freely elected president, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, in July. Security forces have killed hundreds of Brotherhood members in the streets and arrested thousands.

Human rights groups said Monday’s verdict suggested the authorities intended to tighten their squeeze on the opposition.

State television reported the sentences without comment. A government spokesman and other government officials did not immediately respond to calls.

Most of the defendants at Monday’s hearing were detained and charged with carrying out attacks during clashes which erupted in the southern province of Minya after the forced dispersal of two Muslim Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo on August 14.

Islamist militants have also stepped up assaults on the police and army since Morsi’s ouster, killing hundreds and carrying out high profile operations against senior interior ministry officials.

“The court has decided to sentence to death 529 defendants, and 16 were acquitted,” defense lawyer Ahmed al-Sharif told Reuters. The condemned men can appeal against the ruling.

The Muslim Brotherhood, largely driven underground, responded by calling for the “downfall of military rule” on its official website.

Mohamed Mahsoub, who served as minister of legal affairs under Morsi, described the court’s decision “a ruling calling for the execution of justice” on his Facebook page.

Supporters set fire to a nearby school in protest, state television reported, though security officials said they had received no reports of unrest.

‘The quickest case’

The charges against the group, on trial in Minya since Saturday, include violence, inciting murder, storming a police station, attacking persons and damaging public and private property.

“This is the quickest case and the number sentenced to death is the largest in the history of the judiciary,” said lawyer Nabil Abdel Salam, who defends some Brotherhood leaders including Morsi.

“A second year student in the faculty of law would never issue this verdict. There are a lot of flaws in this verdict. I think maybe an appeal could be successful but nothing is predictable,” said Mohamed Zaree, program manager, Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies.

HA Hellyer, an Egypt expert and fellow at American think-tank the Brookings Institution, said he doubted the sentences would be carried out.

“Nevertheless, the very issuing of the sentence itself is quite significant,” he added.

On Tuesday, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Supreme Guide, Mohamed Badie, and 682 others will face trial on charges of incitement to kill.

Attacks

Only 123 of the defendants were in court. The rest were either released, out on bail or on the run.

“When the trial starts on Saturday and it is just a procedural hearing, and the judge doesn’t listen to any lawyers or witnesses and doesn’t even call the defendants, you are before a group of thugs and not the judiciary,” Walid, a relative of one of the defendants, said by phone.

It was not possible to confirm his account of the proceedings independently.

The government has declared the Brotherhood a “terrorist” group. The organization says it is committed to peaceful activism.

Analysts say some of its members could turn violent if the state keeps up pressure on the movement, which won the vast majority of elections since a popular uprising toppled autocrat Hosni Mubarak in 2011.

Egyptian authorities make no distinction between the Brotherhood and hardcore militant groups based in the Sinai peninsula who pose a major security challenge to the state despite army offensives against their fighters.

Morsi, Mubarak’s successor as president, and other top Brotherhood leaders are on trial on a range of charges and accuse the military of staging a coup and undermining democracy.

The army says it was acting on behalf of the Egyptian people, who took to the streets in their millions to call for Morsi’s resignation.

18 Members Of Congress Ask Obama To Reschedule Cannabis

court-of-appeals-district-of-ColumbiaCollective Evolution – by Jeff Roberts

Today, a bipartisan letter to President Obama was sent by Congressman Earl Blumenauer (OR-03) along with 17 other members of Congress, asking him to tell Attorney General Eric Holder to reschedule marijuana from Schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act to Schedule II, meaning marijuana possession wouldn’t be as much of a crime as heroin, and would be punished the same as if someone had the prescription drug Oxycodone if carried illegally, such as not having a prescription.

According to the letter:

“You said that you don’t believe marijuana is any more dangerous than alcohol: a fully legalized substance, and believe it to be less dangerous ‘in terms of its impact on the individual consumer,’”…“This is true. Marijuana, however, remains listed in the federal Controlled Substances Act at Schedule I, the strictest classification, along with heroin and LSD. This is a higher listing than cocaine and methamphetamine, Schedule II substances that you gave as examples of harder drugs. This makes no sense.”

The irony here is blatant – A Schedule I drug necessitates that a substance has no medicinal uses, has a high potential for abuse, and is associated with a lack of safety under medical supervision. For one, cannabis has been known to treat a number of ailments and disease (hereherehere). A high potential for abuse is an irrelevant condition at best, considering tobacco and alcohol are among the most addictive and widely available substances today, killing millions of people every year, yet they are not only legal but are even heavily promoted (alcohol more so) through mass advertising. [1] These statistics also challenge the third schedule condition of safety when realizing that there has been no recorded mortality associated with cannabis use in history. [4]

In the U.S. alone, over 1 billion dollars is spent annually on cannabis incarcerations, 88 percent of which are possession charges. In 2005, an estimated 785 000 people were arrested for cannabis offences. [2] According to U.S. federal statistics, over 94 million people (about 40 percent) aged 12 and older have used cannabis at some point. [2] The question begs, why are we treating millions of innocent people like criminals for possession or use of a plant?

Luckily, this knowing is finally being addressed by congress. The letter continues:

“Cocaine and methamphetamine are more dangerous than marijuana. Everyone knows this,” said Blumenauer. “Tobacco, which is a legal substance, kills an estimated 443,000 people a year, while there are no recorded examples of marijuana overdoses. The Administration needs recognize the relative dangers of these drugs if it wants to restore its credibility. The first step is to reschedule marijuana, which the Administration can do unilaterally. We can’t let this arbitrary and incorrect bureaucratic classification ruin any more lives.”

The signatories on the letter along with Congressman Blumenauer are Representatives Steve Cohen (TN-09), Sam Farr (CA-20), Raúl M. Grijalva (AZ-03), Mike Honda (CA-17), Jared Huffman (CA-02), Barbara Lee (CA-13), Zoe Lofgren (CA-19), Alan Lowenthal (CA-47), James P. McGovern (MA-02), James P. Moran (VA-08), Beto O’Rourke (TX-16), Jared Polis (CO-02), Mike Quigley (IL-05), Dana Rohrabacher (CA-48), Jan Schakowsky (IL-09), Eric Swalwell (CA-15), and Peter Welch (VT-At Large).

We are looking forward to the day when cannabis laws are rewritten with logic and morality as the new foundation for justice.

OBAMA, BIDEN AT HOUSE DEMS" RETREAT – Obama to vow millions in drought aid in CA – Members channel Frank Underwood – DOC HASTINGS TO RETIRE – Issa heads to N.H.

By Scott Wong (swong@politico.com or @scottwongDC)

THE DAY AHEAD – Vice President Joe Biden is rallying the troops this morning at House Democrats’ annual issues conference at the Hyatt Regency Chesapeake Bay in Cambridge, Md. President Obama takes over the microphone at 10:40 a.m., then flies to Fresno, Calif., with Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer and Rep. Jim Costa to discuss his administration’s response to the drought.

OBAMA TO VOW MILLIONS IN AID FOR DROUGHT – Roger Runningen reports for Bloomberg: “U.S. President Barack Obama is offering millions of dollars in aid and other assistance to California farmers, ranchers and communities beset by one of the worst droughts in the state’s history. The federal help will be detailed today by Obama when he’s joined by California Governor Jerry Brown in Fresno, in the state’s fertile Central Valley. The drought is forcing farmers there to leave idle thousands of acres of fields in the state that supplies almost half of the nation’s fruits and vegetables. It has also left 17 rural towns so low on drinking water that the state may need to start trucking in supplies. …

– “The administration plans to accelerate distribution of as much as $ 100 million in aid to ranchers to help feed livestock and offer compensation for losses. The Agriculture Department is also making available $ 15 million in conservation aid for the worst drought regions in California and five other drought-stricken states to reduce wind erosion on damaged fields and improve livestock access to water. The White House said $ 60 million has been made available to California food banks for families affected by the drought, and plans are under way to establish 600 summer meal sites in hard-hit regions this summer.” http://bloom.bg/1iVnlf0

– The president will also ask Congress to create a $ 1 billion “Climate Resiliency Fund” in his budget request next month, reports our own Alex Guillen.  http://politi.co/1gfoEVC

FEDERAL OFFICES will open two hours late this morning as the Washington, D.C., region digs out from a second wave of snow in as many nights. OPM: http://1.usa.gov/1bw9GbZ

NOBODY DOES ALERTMAGEDDON LIKE D.C., writes the Wall Street Journal’s Elizabeth Williamson: “Finally, Washington had a blizzard worthy of seven days of storm tracking, closures, cancellations and widespread hoarding. Nobody does snow-related Alertmageddon like D.C. The capital city, with its legions of warm-weather transplants and a workforce largely inexperienced in manual labor, approaches every forecast of snow, no matter how sketchy, with an orgy of meteorological modeling, thousands of words of commentary and a run on the dairy section. Hurricanes, by comparison, don’t get much attention. …

– “The House moved up its vote on increasing the nation’s debt ceiling—legislation responsible for three years of controversy—from Wednesday to Tuesday because of the potential for snow. On Wednesday, the Senate quickly passed the debt ceiling bill, as legislators tweeted their intent to blow town. Also canceled: Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen’s appearance before the Senate Banking Committee, hearings on the minimum wage and Food and Drug Administration drug approvals … Finally, the whole federal government shut down, followed by the city government, followed by most of the White House.” http://on.wsj.com/1lNU4UP

PROGRAMMING NOTE – There will be no Huddle on Monday due to the Presidents’ Day holiday. My able colleagues Ginger Gibson and Seung Min Kim will be filling in for the remainder of the week. Send them your news tips and trivia questions at ggibson@politico.com and skim@politico.com.

MOVE OVER eHARMONY … The Democratic-aligned Americans United for Change is having some fun with Valentine’s Day this year. The group is out with a mock online dating site with a profile video for ‘Minny Mumwage,’ who says she would love nothing more than getting a date with Speaker Boehner on the House floor, as she depressingly hasn’t been on one since 2009. See it here at www.CongressMingle.com. Watch the video here: http://youtu.be/ACvigtaTevo

D.C.’S VALENTINE TO ITSELF: BELTWAY CELEBRATES ‘HOUSE OF CARDS’ – Andrea Drusch reports for POLITICO: “D.C. is in love this Valentine’s Day — with itself. Netflix released the second season of its original series House of Cards on Friday, and media and politicos can’t wait to settle into thirteen straight hours of a show that centers on the very industry in which they work and live every day. Whether they’re planning to power through the whole season in a single night or space it out over the coming weeks, the show’s loyal fans can’t stop talking about the next chapter for D.C.’s shadow cast. ‘It’s a fun escape from what day-to-day life on the Hill is actually like,’ said Alex Conant, press secretary for Sen. Marco Rubio, in an interview. He plans to dive into the show right away. ‘It makes politics in Washington appear even worse than it is, which is a feat.’

– “Conant was among many to take to Twitter on Wednesday night encouraging Netflix to release the series a day early when the federal government was closed for bad weather. While it might seem ironic for people working in politics and journalism to ‘escape’ to a show about, well, politics and journalism, Conant isn’t alone in the sentiment. … ‘I hope to be totally entertained, to completely dragged out of my world and into a fantasy of what goes on Capitol Hill,’ said Fox News host Greta Van Susteren in an interview, of her expectations for the new season.” http://politi.co/1jgkHQL

TODAY IN CONGRESS – Both the House and Senate have adjourned through next week for the Presidents’ Day holiday. House Democrats wrap up their annual conference today in Cambridge, Md., with visits from Vice President Joe Biden and President Barack Obama.

THE WSJ EDITORIAL BOARD is calling Sen. Ted Cruz “The Minority Maker” for forcing Republicans to break his filibuster on the debt-ceiling bill: “We’re all for holding politicians accountable with votes on substantive issues, but Mr. Cruz knew he couldn’t stop a debt increase the House had already passed. He also had no alternative strategy if the bill had failed, other than to shut down the government again, take public attention away from ObamaCare, and make Republicans even more unpopular. Democrats beat the odds and retained their Senate majority in 2010 and 2012 in part because they stuck together. If Republicans fail again this November, a big reason will be their rump kamikaze caucus.” http://on.wsj.com/LYTBSg

COMCAST READIES FOR WAR IN WASHINGTON – Tony Romm and Anna Palmer report for the hometown paper: “Cable giant Comcast started the day with a call to arms, hosting its lobbyists and consultants, along with Time Warner Cable’s, on a private conference call to begin building a strategy to beat back threats in Washington that could jeopardize its $ 45 billion merger. Comcast’s top congressional lobbyist Melissa Maxfield ran the call, laying out the company’s Washington outreach strategy for its in-house government affairs team and for its hired guns. Consultants for Comcast and Time Warner Cable were sent the press release announcing the merger and talking points to use on Capitol Hill and at federal agencies.

– “K-Streeters also began reaching out to Capitol Hill and agency staffers to report back on how the merger proposal was being received, according to sources familiar with the strategy. … The activity lays the groundwork for what’s shaping up to be an aggressive campaign by Comcast to sell the Time Warner Cable deal in Washington. Sources familiar with the company said they expect Comcast to try to sway lawmakers, community organizations, agencies and other groups in advance of public hearings most observers expect will be scheduled in the coming months.” http://politi.co/1buJy3W

HASTINGS NOT SEEKING REELECTION – Mike Faulk reports for the Yakima (Wash.) Herald-Republic: “In a decision that surprised some, longtime U.S. Rep. Doc Hastings said Thursday he’ll retire at the end of the year after 20 years in Congress representing the 4th Congressional District. ‘It’s been a great privilege,’ said Hastings, a Pasco Republican, in an interview with the Yakima Herald-Republic. Retirement has been on his mind for several years, said Hastings, 73, adding that his family — wife Claire, three adult children and eight grandchildren — influenced his decision. ‘It’s been 20 years. I have to say that my family played a big part of (the decision).’ … Hastings, a small businessman before he entered politics full time, was first elected in 1994 when he defeated then-Rep. Jay Inslee of Selah, now Washington’s governor. Over time, his seat became one of the safest in the country as he handily defeated Democratic challengers and never faced a serious threat from far-right elements of the Republican Party.” http://bit.ly/1kH2ejL

– SPEAKER BOEHNER: “For nearly two decades, Doc Hastings has served in the House with honor, humility and distinction.  In addition to being a skilled legislator and leader, he’s the epitome of grace and class, and he’s a very dear friend.  I’m grateful for Doc’s service to our institution and our nation, and for his friendship and support throughout our many years together in the House.”

FOR ISSA, RED MEAT = BIG MONEY – Paul Singer reports for USA Today: “As chairman of the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Darrell Issa is discovering a powerful political equation: red meat = money.  At the close of 2013, the California Republican had raised more campaign money than nearly all of the other House committee chairmen, trailing only Budget Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2012. According to FEC records, Issa’s campaign brought in $ 2.15 million in 2013, while Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp, R-Mich., brought in $ 2.05 million and Financial Services Chairman Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, and Transportation and Infrastructure Chairman Bill Shuster, R-Pa., both brought in $ 2.08 million.  Not the biggest war chests in the House – for example, Majority Leader Eric Cantor posted a $ 3.93 million haul for the non-election year – but robust totals. (None of this counts receipts of the members’ leadership PACs or related fundraising entities.).” http://usat.ly/1lNY5Zp

– Issa makes two stops in New Hampshire next week before heading back to California for more events, aides said: The Concord/Merrimack County GOP Lincoln Day Dinner (2/17) and the Committee to elect House Republicans (New Hampshire State House) Breakfast in Manchester (2/18).

WARNER’S FLEETING ‘SNOWBAMACARE’ TWEET – Tal Kopan writes for POLITICO: “Call it a snow-pas. Sen. Mark Warner’s office blamed a staff snow day ‘#fail’ for a deleted tweet Thursday morning that made a joke about the Virginia GOP and the winter storm that shut down Washington. ‘Just a matter of time: waiting for the @VA_GOP to claim this winter storm was caused by The Affordable Care Act. #Snowbamacare,’ the account tweeted, deleting it 26 seconds later, according to an archive of deleted tweets kept by the Sunlight Foundation. … Warner’s Senate account bio says tweets come from both the senator and staff. Warner’s communications director took responsibility for the errant tweet. ‘It was my mistake. I acknowledged it as quickly as possible, and I apologize,’ Kevin Hall said in an email to POLITICO.” http://politi.co/1buKpS5

THURSDAY’S TRIVIA WINNER – Jim Brewer was first to correctly answer that the Marquis De Lafayette, the French military officer, was the first foreign dignitary to address the House of Representatives in its chamber. http://1.usa.gov/1eVuvAO

For First Time, Most Members of Congress Are Millionaires

(Newser) – It isn’t too much of a stretch to say that John Boehner now presides over a millionaires’ club, reports the Center for Responsive Politics. Its analysis of financial disclosure forms reveals that more than half of the members of Congress qualify. Specifically, 268 of the 534 current members had a net worth of at least $ 1 million in 2012, up from 257 members (48%) the previous year. It’s the first time in history that millionaires are in the majority.

Darrell Issa, who made a mint selling car alarms, is in the top spot at around $ 464 million. But before you feel too poor, consider the plight of Rep. David Valadao, R-Calif. He’s in the last spot (again) with a net worth of a negative $ 12 million, thanks to loans for his family’s dairy farm. USA Today and CNBC note a few other details: Real estate is the No. 1 investment vehicle for members of Congress; GE is the most popular stock pick for those who play the markets, with 71 members owning shares; and Democrats, with a median net worth of $ 1.04 million, are richer than Republicans, at $ 1 million. Also, senators are generally wealthier than their House counterparts, with a median net worth of $ 2.7 million, compared with $ 896,000.

At least 35 House members set to sue Obama

Shuuuuuurr they are.

WND

On Dec. 19, the Obama administration made its 14th change to Obamacare without requesting congressional action to make the amendments. Such a move is precisely why an effort is underway in the House of Representatives to sue President Obama and force him to abide by constitutional restraints.

The measure is known as the Stop This Overreaching Presidency, or STOP, Act and is sponsored by freshman Rep. Tom Rice, R-S.C. He told WND this is about abiding by the Constitution.

“Article II, Section 3, requires the president to faithfully execute the laws of the United States. Everybody’s bound by the law, including the president. He is not exempt,” Rice said. “If a president is allowed to pick and choose which laws he wishes to enforce, it creates tremendous opportunities for wrongdoing.

“What would we say if the next president who came in decided he didn’t like Obamacare and he wasn’t going to enforce any part of it? What would we say if a president decided he wasn’t going to enforce the maximum bracket on the income tax, or wasn’t going to enforce the income tax on his political friends? Of course, those things wouldn’t be tolerated,” Rice said. “We’ve got a similar type of lines going on here with Obamacare. We’ve got the president giving 1,300 exemptions. We’ve got him waiving the employer mandate for businesses but applying the individual mandate for the common conservative. It’s not right. The law has got to be applied uniformly.”

He said he actually started exploring this legislation earlier in the year based on comments made by a Democrat.

“I started working on this last July,” Rice said. “Right after the extension of the employer mandate was in the press, one of the Democratic senators said, ‘How can the president do this?’ That’s what spurred me to look at what we could do to force the president to enforce the law,” Rice said.

While executive branch changes to Obamacare are the most visible examples of Obama altering laws, Rice said there are plenty of other examples, too.

“In the resolution, we list four specific things. One is the waiver of the work requirements under the welfare law. One is the granting of legal work status to illegal immigrants en masse. One is the waiver of the employer mandate under the Affordable Care Act. The fourth is the extension for one year of the ability of the insurance companies to sell ‘substandard insurance policies.’ In this case, substandard means any insurance policy that people actually want to buy,” he said.

The congressman pointed out that the resolution only needs to pass the House, since the House can file or defend a lawsuit as a standalone institution. He said that would carry far more weight in a federal court than a lone member filing suit. He said he didn’t “ask permission” from GOP leaders before filing the bill, and a conversation with House Majority Leader Eric Cantor gives him reason for optimism.

“I have spoken to Cantor about it, and he seems interested in it. I think the chances of it hitting the floor are pretty good,” said Rice, who revealed he has 34 co-sponsors, including three House Judiciary Committee members. He said the ultimate success of the effort will depend upon how vocal the American people are about making sure the president follows the Constitution.

Democrats are expected to label the effort as another attempt by Republicans to scuttle Obamacare because they can’t accept that was passed and signed into law. Rice said that’s not the goal at all.

“I hear that a lot, but they don’t want to enforce what was passed. That’s the problem. They want to enforce the parts that they want.  Let’s enforce exactly what was passed,” he said.

“This is not a tea-party thing,” he added. “This is not a Democrat versus Republican thing. This is not any personal animosity toward the president. What the president is doing undermines our constitutional protections, the separation of powers. Congress makes the laws. The president enforces the laws, and he’s refusing to do that. He’s not carrying out his constitutional duty and I simply want him to do what he’s required to do by the Constitution,” said Rice.

BANGKOK — The Democrat Party, Thailand’s oldest and the main force behind the country’s political opposition, announced on Sunday that its members would resign from Parliament and join anti-government street demonstrations, deepening the political turmoil that has left five people dead and hundreds injured over the past two weeks.

The Democrats have been deeply frustrated by their inability to win elections against the powerful political machine backed by the billionaire tycoon Thaksin Shinawatra, a former prime minister who now lives in exile. The party’s decision to withdraw from Parliament is the latest sign of the skepticism of Thailand’s democratic process that is spreading among the opposition and many members of the Thai elite.

“We cannot beat them,” said Theptai Seanapong, one of the members of Parliament who resigned on Sunday. “It doesn’t matter if we raise our hands and feet in parliamentary votes, we will never win.”

The mistrust of electoral politics has echoes across the region — in Malaysia, where the governing party has heavily gerrymandered the electoral map, and in Cambodia, where the authoritarian prime minister, Hun Sen, has used the machinery of the state and military to bolster his power. The Cambodian opposition continues to boycott Parliament over allegations of widespread electoral fraud in July elections.

One major difference in Thailand is that there is little dispute that Mr. Thaksin’s party has won the hearts of the majority of voters. By tailoring its policies to voters in the provinces, especially in northern Thailand, scholars say, the governing Pheu Thai party has convincingly won every election since 2001.

The move by the Democrat Party to abandon the House of Representatives leaves more than 340 seats still occupied, above the threshold of 250 members needed to conduct votes. The party said 152 Democrats would resign. There is very little chance that measures backed by the government will be blocked because the governing coalition controls about 300 of the 500 seats in the House.

But the Democrat Party will now inject its resources and prestige into the volatile street protests, which are set to continue after a call for a mass gathering on Monday with the aim of taking over the prime minister’s office.

Thai news media reported on Sunday that protesters were arriving in the capital from the provinces, especially southern Thailand, the stronghold of the Democrat Party.

As Thailand’s peak tourism season gets underway, embassies have advised their citizens to avoid the protest areas, and Bangkok’s main airport has alerted travelers that they should leave for the airport at least four hours before their flights are scheduled to depart.

The Democrat Party has many grievances with Mr. Thaksin’s party, including what it considers the railroading of some spending bills, voting procedures in Parliament that a court has called illegal and the furtive passage of important laws in the early hours of the morning.

But for a party that has long cultivated a genteel and intellectual image and advocated resolving differences inside Parliament, the decision to take to the streets was contentious within its own ranks. A number of key members of the party were not present at the meeting on Sunday.

Yet the party’s move has parallels — and worrying similarities, some observers believe — to a move the party made seven years ago.

Amid a campaign of street protests against Mr. Thaksin, then the prime minister, the Democrat Party boycotted elections in April 2006. Five months later, Mr. Thaksin was deposed in a military coup.

During the current round of demonstrations, protest leaders have courted the military, and many protesters have openly called for another coup. But until now, the army chief, Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha, has appeared wary of intervening in the crisis.

A Thai newspaper, the Post Today, reported on Sunday that General Prayuth had said a coup would not solve the country’s problems.

“We must be patient and seek a peaceful solution,” the paper quoted him as saying.

The protesters’ hope for royal intervention has also not had results.

King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who has intervened in political standoffs in the past but is now ailing, did not specifically address the protests in a speech given on his 86th birthday on Thursday.

Mr. Thaksin also appears to be going out of his way to patch up any perceived differences with the royal family. After several weeks of public silence, he posted a comment on his Facebook page on Saturday denying claims that he had ever been disloyal to the royal family.

“I would like to insist here that I’ve never even thought to reproach any member of the royal family because I received their royal graces all along,” he said.

Thailand’s prime minister, Yingluck Shinawatra, who is Mr. Thaksin’s sister, said on Sunday that she would consider calling elections, a move that other members of her government had rejected in recent days.

Until now, protest leaders have spurned the notion of elections, and many opposition leaders freely admit that they cannot overcome the electoral power of Mr. Thaksin’s party.

Instead, the protest leaders are calling for a system that would replace the country’s electoral democracy with a vaguely defined “people’s council,” a plan that has been widely derided by civic leaders and scholars as idealistic, unworkable and retrograde.

Ms. Yingluck said on Sunday that the country would have to hold a referendum for any such plan to be considered.

Her administration has earned plaudits from foreign government for its handling of the crisis in the face of aggressive moves by the protesters, who have taken over the Finance Ministry, occupied a large government complex on the outskirts of the city and temporarily cut power to a number of state-owned buildings, including the police headquarters.

The police say that the five deaths that occurred were caused by shootings among competing groups of protesters.

At the height of the violent confrontations between protesters and the riot police last week, the European Union said the authorities’ actions had been “restrained and proportionate.”

Somali terror group has 20 American members

The Somali terror group that stormed a Kenyan mall, killing more than 60 people, has a larger U.S. contingent than any other al Qaeda offshoot, said U.S. officials, and is now more prone to mount deadly attacks on targets outside Somalia.

Al Shabaab’s attacks on foreign targets include an attempt to kill a U.S. congressman visiting Mogadishu in 2009. Rep. Donald Payne, D-N.J., was uninjured in the mortar attack.

Via Twitter, al Shabaab has claimed that six of the jihadis holding hostages at Nairobi’s Westgate mall are Americans, and provided names for what it said were individuals from Minneapolis, Kansas City, Maine, Illinois and Arizona.

America: Where Hard Working, Productive Members Of Society Pay For The Health Care Of Everyone Else

Michael Snyder
Economic Collapse Blog
August 4, 2013

Everybody in America wants health care – but most Americans seem to want someone else to pay for it. In the United States today, the way that our system works is that the hard working, productive members of society pay for the health care of everyone else. At least under socialism everyone gets the same benefits. Our system of health care is a very twisted version of socialism where millions upon millions of very hard working people are forced to pay for the health care of others, but often can’t afford to purchase decent health insurance for themselves. Personally, I don’t have a big employer paying for my health care so I have to buy it myself, and I just got a letter from my health insurance company telling me that I have another massive rate increase coming up. Have you gotten a similar letter? Health insurance premiums are going up all over America, and this is just the beginning. In fact, the CEO of Aetna says that health insurance rates for many Americans will double when the major provisions of Obamacare kick in next year.

It would be bad enough if hard working Americans just had to pay for their own health insurance. But no, they are also expected to pay for the health care of members of Congress, employees of the IRS and other federal agencies, state and local government employees, their adult kids (because they can’t afford health insurance), the elderly, the poor, and now under Obamacare they will also be expected to subsidize the health plans of tens of millions of other Americans that are not poor enough to qualify for Medicaid.

When you add it all up, the hard working, productive members of society are at least partially subsidizing the health care of well over half of all Americans while having to pay for their own health care at the same time.

Needless to say, it isn’t too hard to see who is getting the raw end of the deal.

Members of Congress certainly don’t want to pay for their own health care. There was panic in the halls of Congress recently when they started realizing that due to certain provisions in Obamacare they may soon be forced to pay for their own health insurance plans. There was widespread moaning and complaining about how they would be facing “thousands of dollars in additional premium payments” every year.

Things got so bad that Barack Obama got personally involved in the effort to find a solution. Thankfully, members of Congress can relaxbecause a ruling is being issued that will allow the federal government to continue to subsidize 75 percent of the cost of their health plans…

Lawmakers and staff can breathe easy — their health care tab is not going to soar next year.

The Office of Personnel Management, under heavy pressure from Capitol Hill, will issue a ruling that says the government can continue to make a contribution to the health care premiums of members of Congress and their aides, according to several Hill sources.

A White House official confirmed the deal and said the proposed regulations will be issued next week.

And the IRS, which has been put in charge of imposing the rules of Obamacare on all the rest of us, is freaking out about the fact that some members of Congress would like to force them to personally participate in Obamacare

The union that represents IRS employees is urging its members to write to their congressmen to help get the union out of Obamacare.

The following are some excerpts from a letter that the union that represents IRS employees sent to members of Congress…

“H.R. 1780 would put federal employees in a special class where they would be prohibited from receiving health insurance through their employer. It would treat federal employees differently from state and local government employees and most employees of large private sector companies who receive health insurance benefits through their employer. The primary purpose of the Affordable Care Act was to provide a marketplace for the sale and purchase of health insurance for those who do not have such coverage – not to take coverage away from employees who already receive it through their employers,” the letter reads.

“I work hard and am proud of the services that I provide to your constituents every day. One of the main benefits I receive as a federal employee is the ability to purchase health insurance coverage through the FEHBP with an employer contribution towards those benefits. Please let me know your views on this legislation. I look forward to hearing back from you,” the letter concludes.

This is just shameful. If the IRS is going to impose Obamacare on the rest of America, then it should be good enough for them too.

Just check out acting IRS chief Danny Werfel begging for employees of his agency not to have to go on Obamacare…

But we have always had to at least partially subsidize the health plans of federal, state and local government workers.

The big change under Obamacare is that we will soon be subsidizing the health plans of tens of millions of our fellow Americans.

CNN says that 26 million Americans will be eligible for health insurance subsidies, but others believe that the true number is far, far higher than that.

For example, according to CNBC, a family of three in New York that earns $ 78,120 a year would be eligible for a subsidy of more than five thousand dollars…

In New York, a family of three whose annual income totals $ 78,120, would pay $ 12,784 for the second-lower-priced silver plan on that state’s insurance exchange. After getting a $ 5,363 tax credit, the family’s net cost for the insurance would be $ 7,421.

So who pays for that?

You and I do through our tax dollars.

And if you can believe it, Obamacare actually provides an incentive to not work too hard, because if you make too much money you could lose your health insurance subsidy…

Working more could ultimately mean thousands of dollars less for you under a quirk in the new health-care law going into effect this fall. This could prompt some people to cut back on their hours to avoid losing money.

“Working more can actually leave you worse off,” the price-comparison site ValuePenguin.com notes in anew analysis.

“It’s sort of an absurd scenario,” said Jonathan Wu, ValuePenguin.com’s co-founder. “It’s something for people to be aware of.”

In that scenario, an individual or family whose annual income surpasses maximums set by the federal government—if only by $ 1—will totally lose subsidies available to buy health insurance under the Affordable Care Act.

What a perverse system.

And of course Obamacare will allow young adults to stay on the health insurance policies of their parents until they reach 26 years of age. As I mentioned the other day, 36 percent of all young adults in the 18 to 31 age bracket are currently living with their folks. In most of those cases, the parents have to end up footing the bill for health care because the kids simply cannot afford it.

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

Medicaid continues to expand as well. Certainly helping the poor is a very good thing, but unfortunately the number of poor just continues to explode.

Back in 1965, only one out of every 50 Americans was on Medicaid. Today, one out of every 6 Americans is on Medicaid, and things are about to get a whole lot worse.

Right now, there are more than 56 million Americans on Medicaid, and it is being projected that Obamacare will add 16 million more Americansto the Medicaid rolls.

It is going to take a whole lot of money to support 72 million Medicaid patients.

And then of course there is Medicare.

When Medicare was first established, we were told that it would cost about $ 12 billion a year by the time 1990 rolled around.

Instead, it actually cost the federal government $ 110 billion in 1990, and it will cost the federal government close to $ 600 billion this year.

But if you think this is bad, just wait until all of the Baby Boomers retire. It is being projected that the number of Americans on Medicare will grow from a little bit more than 50 million today to 73.2 million in 2025. By then, we would be spending well over a trillion dollars a year on Medicare.

As you can see, under Obamacare the vast majority of all Americans will have their health care at least partially subsidized.

And it expected that our tax dollars will somehow be enough to pay for all of this.

The truth is that we have a deeply broken system. Costs are spiraling out of control and nobody is quite sure how to fix things. The following statistics come from one of my previous articles entitled “50 Signs That The U.S. Health Care System Is A Gigantic Money Making Scam“…

-This year the American people will spend approximately 2.8 trillion dollars on health care, and it is being projected that Americans will spend 4.5 trillion dollars on health care in 2019.

-The United States spends more on health care than Japan, Germany, France, China, the U.K., Italy, Canada, Brazil, Spain and Australia combined.

-If the U.S. health care system was a country, it would be the 6th largest economy on the entire planet.

-Back in 1960, an average of $ 147 was spent per person on health care in the United States. By 2009, that number had skyrocketed to $ 8,086.

The sad thing is that many hard working Americans in the private sector are being forced to subsidize the health care of others, but they can’t even afford decent health care for themselves.

For example, I know of one hard working couple that has a health plan that has a $ 1,000 deductible. Even with that deductible, their health insurance premiums are absolutely ridiculous. Their health care strategy is simply to avoid going to the hospital or visiting a doctor as much as possible.

And of course health insurance companies make money by providing as little health care as possible. Many Americans have discovered that when you need them the most, some health insurance companies will try to get out of covering you any way that they possibly can.

The reality is that just because you have health insurance that does not mean that you are “covered”.

According to a study that was published in The American Journal of Medicine, medical bills are a major factor in more than 60 percent of all personal bankruptcies in the United States. Of those bankruptcies that were caused by medical bills, approximately 75 percent of them involved people that actually did have health insurance.

So what is the bottom line?

The bottom line is the system stinks, and Obamacare is going to make things a whole lot worse.

Handful of Congress Members Move to Rein In Surveillance State

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
June 23, 2013

It’s no mistake the Limiting Internet and Blanket Electronic Review of Telecommunications and Email Act (LIBERT-E Act) received zero coverage by the establishment media. The legislation, sponsored by Rep. Justin Amash (R-MI), Chairman of the House Liberty Caucus, and Rep. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI), the Ranking Member on the House Judiciary Committee, will be allowed to die a quiet and unobtrusive death.

Ben Swann on the NSA’s criminality.

The bill strikes at the heart of the PATRIOT Act, the unconstitutional monstrosity passed by Congress and signed into law by George W. Bush on October 26, 2001. LIBERT-E Act would also restrict the government’s ability to conduct surveillance not connected to an ongoing investigation. It calls for the illegal and unconstitutional FISA Court to make its secret opinions available to Congress and the American people.

The LIBERT-E Act, however, falls far short of correcting the problem. The PATRIOT Act should be repealed immediately and the FISA Court dismantled. Unfortunately, neither of these things will happen due to more than a decade of propaganda to brainwash the American people into falsely believing they face a terrorist threat and therefore must surrender their birthright enshrined in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

LIBERT-E is a noble if half-hearted effort sponsored by 32 members of Congress. They released the following statement on the legislation:

“The recent NSA leaks indicate that the federal government collects phone records and intercepts electronic communications on a scale previously unknown to most Americans.
“The LIBERT-E Act imposes reasonable limits on the federal government’s surveillance. The bill puts some teeth into the FISA court’s determination of whether records the government wants are actually relevant to an investigation. It also makes sure that innocent Americans’ information isn’t needlessly swept up into a government database. LIBERT-E prohibits the type of government dragnet that the leaked Verizon order revealed.

“We accept that free countries must engage in secret operations from time to time to protect their citizens. Free countries must not, however, operate under secret laws. Secret court opinions obscure the law. They prevent public debate on critical policy issues and they stop Congress from fulfilling its duty to enact sound laws and fix broken ones.

“LIBERT-E lets every congressman have access to FISA court opinions so that Congress can have a more informed debate about security and privacy. And the bill requires that unclassified summaries of the opinions be available to the public so that Americans can judge for themselves the merit of their government’s actions.

“We are proud to lead a broad, bipartisan coalition that’s working to protect privacy. It shouldn’t matter whether you’re a Democrat or a Republican. Defending the Constitution and protecting Americans’ rights should be an effort we all can support.”

Putting “reasonable limits on the federal government’s surveillance” will permit the government to continue its surveillance. Instead of half measures, Congress needs to call for the dismantlement of the NSA – and the CIA and FBI – and all legislation that violates the Fourth Amendment needs to be immediately repealed.

Finally, all the criminals who have conspired against the Constitution need to be arrested immediately – including standing and ex-presidents – and put on trial for treason.

Anything short of a strenuous effort will result in failure. Half measures and statements released by a handful of Congress members will be ignored as the fascist juggernaut rolls forward. The ruling elite are now a hair’s breadth away from finishing the installation of their high-tech surveillance and police state. If they successfully fend off attempts to preserve the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, in the not too distant future all opposition to their fascist rule will be impossible.

Chris Rodda: Congress Members Want Military Gays to be Free to Mock Christians

An amendment to the FY14 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), if it remains in the bill and is signed into law, would give gays serving in the military permission to openly mock and denigrate Christians.

The amendment, introduced by Rep. John Fleming (R-LA) has already passed in the House, but has also already been objected to by the Obama administration. A similar amendment, introduced by Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) has passed the Senate Armed Services Committee.

What Rep. Fleming’s amendment would do is alter the language of the “religious freedom” amendment that made it into last year’s NDAA, raising the bar on just how much our gay men and women in uniform can mock and denigrate their Christian fellow service members.

If passed, these new rules will be a huge victory for gays in the military. No longer will they have to be respectful of those whose religious beliefs tell them that homosexuality is a sin. They will be free to openly mock the Bible and Christians and push the gay agenda on everybody — and their commanders won’t be able to do a damn thing to stop them.

This is how the proposed changes will alter section 533 of last year’s NDAA (new language bolded and in brackets):

(a) PROTECTION OF RIGHTS OF CONSCIENCE.–

(1) ACCOMMODATION.–[Except in cases of military necessity,] the Armed Forces shall accommodate the beliefs, [actions, and speech] of a member of the armed forces reflecting the conscience, moral principles, or religious beliefs of the member and, in so far as practicable, may not use such beliefs, [actions, and speech] as the basis of any adverse personnel action, discrimination, or denial of promotion, schooling, training, or assignment.

(2) DISCIPLINARY OR ADMINISTRATIVE ACTION.–Nothing in paragraph (1) precludes disciplinary or administrative action for conduct that is proscribed by chapter 47 of title 10, United States Code (the Uniform Code of Military Justice), including actions and speech that threaten [actually harm] good order and discipline.

No longer will name-calling and harassment be prohibited if these “sticks and stones” merely pose a threat to good order and discipline; they will have to result in actual harm to good order and discipline. In other words, a commander will no longer be able to head off a potential breach of good order and discipline in their unit by stopping a gay service member from calling a Christian a “Bible thumper” or “Jesus freak” — they will have to wait until such name-calling escalates to a point where the persecution of the Christians in their unit becomes so great that the unit cannot function efficiently.

And Fleming’s amendment doesn’t stop at mere words. The anti-Christian actions of gays in the military will also be protected! Gays will be free to push their gay agenda on everybody in any manner that doesn’t rise to the level of violating Chapter 47 of the UCMJ! Pro-gay chaplains will even be able to stop heterosexual Christian wedding ceremonies from taking place in military chapels!

Yeah, right. Now go back and read this post reversing Christians and gays because that, of course, is what Rep. Fleming’s amendment will do. This amendment, under the guise of “religious liberty,” is really all about undermining and even reversing the repeal of “Don’t ask, don’t tell,” and everybody knows it.
