Bush admin official arrested on sex assault charge

A prominent lobbyist and former George W. Bush administration official has been arrested in connection with an alleged sexual assault.

Sloan Wilson Rappoport, listed in public reports as a lobbyist for Downey McGrath Group, was arrested Wednesday by Fairfax, Va. county police.

He was charged him with abduction, sexual battery, and obscene display in connection with an alleged assault that occurred at Bailey’s Crossroads.

According to the Fairfax County police department, a 28-year-old woman was shopping in a Ross clothing store earlier this month when a man approached her speaking Spanish. As she left the store, the same man pulled up in silver-colored Mercedes and asked her to get in.

The alleged assailant then locked the doors, drove to a location nearby and sexually assaulted her, according to a police statement.

As of Wednesday, Rappoport’s bio has been removed from the Downey McGrath Group website. However, he appears on lobbying registrations for the firm as recently as February. The firm did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

According to an archived version of the bio, which identifies Rappoport as a vice president to the firm, he worked mostly on international trade,financial services, healthcare, energy and environment.

He’s also previously served in senior positions in the U.S. Department of Commerce during the Bush administration and on Capitol Hill for Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz), former Sen. Olympia J. Snowe (R-Maine) and ex-Rep. Bob Stump (R-Ariz.)

An attorney for Rappoport did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Port Official: Christie Lied, Knew About Lane Closings

(Newser) – Chris Christie’s bridge scandal may have just gotten a lot bigger: One of the key figures in the mess now insists that the New Jersey governor knew about the plan to shut down lanes on the George Washington Bridge all along, reports the New York Times. Christie has blamed the decision on underlings and even fired one of them. In a newly released letter, the attorney for former Port Authority official David Wildstein says the order to close the lanes not only came from the Christie administration, but “evidence exists as well tying Mr. Christie to having knowledge of the lane closures, during the period when the lanes were closed, contrary to what the governor stated publicly.”

The attorney wrote the letter to the Port Authority, asking the agency to reconsider a decision that it wouldn’t pay Wildstein’s legal bills, reports the Star-Ledger. The letter alleges that Wildstein is being unfairly treated by both the authority and the governor. “Mr. Wildstein contests the accuracy of various statements that the governor made about him and he can prove the inaccuracy of some,” the letter says. (CNN) — Pakistani police raided a school occupied by militants Saturday, killing four people, authorities said.

The attack occurred at a school in Swabi city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, according to senior police official Haji Khan.

Fifty militants were rounded up following the gunfire, which lasted more than four hours, he said.

A massive amount of arms and ammunition were recovered from the school.

Swabi is the hometown of Sheikh Khalid Haqqani, the deputy chief of the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif reiterated in parliament this week that he still wants to hold talks with militants instead of resorting to a military operation.

A four-member committee has been appointed to push forward with negotiations.

A new round of congressional sanctions will kill Iran’s nuclear talks with the United States and other powerful nations, according to Iran’s top diplomat.

As the Senate returns Monday for a work period that some hope to use to craft a new economic sanctions bill, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif warned lawmakers that even delayed sanctions will eviscerate an interim deal to drawback Iran’s nuclear program in return for some sanction relief.

If lawmakers decide to pass legislation imposing new penalties on Iran while a more permanent agreement is negotiated, then “the entire deal is dead,” Zarif said in an interview with TIME.

“We do not like to negotiate under duress. And if Congress adopts sanctions, it shows lack of seriousness and a lack of desire to achieve a resolution on the part of the United States,” Zarif said. “I have a parliament. My parliament can also adopt various legislation that can go into effect if negotiations fail. But if we start doing that, I don’t think that we will be getting anywhere. Now we have tried to ask our members of parliament to avoid that.”

Zarif’s remarks come as the Obama administration descends on Capitol Hill to try to ward off hawkish lawmakers’ attempts to pass fresh sanctions. Secretary of State John Kerry will testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday and top Treasury and State department officials will make the case against new sanctions before the Senate Banking Committee on Thursday.

Several powerful lawmakers on the Banking panel, including Democratic Sens. Chuck Schumer of New York and Robert Menendez of New Jersey, have vowed to pass legislation that would take effect if ongoing diplomatic talks with Iran fail. But Senate Democratic aides doubt there is time this month for the Senate to pass sanctions, likely kicking any such legislation to next year.

Maryland official who led problematic, state-run ObamaCare site resigns

The top Maryland official in charge of the state-run ObamaCare exchange resigned this weekend amid major efforts to fix the problematic website.

Rebecca Pearce, executive director of the Maryland Health Benefits Exchange, resigned Friday, according to several news sources.

She appears to be the first official to lose a job as a result of problems with ObamaCare exchanges since they went live Oct. 1.  

Critics of the federal exchange have called for the resignation of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and other administration officials in charge of the problem-plagued HealthCare.gov. But President Obama has yet to accept a resignation.

The Maryland exchange’s board of directors released a statement saying it has accepted Pearce’s resignation and that she “worked tirelessly and with tremendous dedication to build Maryland Health Connection over more than two years.”

The group has not said exactly why Pearce resigned. But a source told The Washington Post is was related to leadership changes made by Gov. Martin O’Malley, a strong political ally of Obama and a potential 2016 Democratic presidential candidate.

Maryland is one of 14 states running its own exchange and has struggled with the same kind of technical problems that have plagued the federal site that the 36 other states use to sign up Americans for insurance under Obama’s signature health care reform law.

O’Malley has been a strong supporter of ObamaCare, and his Democratic-leaning state was among the first to get started on a state-run exchange.

However, the site, MarylandHealthConnection.gov, crashed soon after the October rollout and has sputtered along over roughly the past nine weeks, enrolling just 3,000 residents.

However, state officials indicated earlier Friday that the site has shown some improvement, signing up roughly 700 more people in the week ending Nov. 30.
