Virtual Reality French Experimental Theater Is The Trippiest Thing

Benoit Marini has spent years working with virtual-reality technology for the French company Dassault Systemes. As the director for the company’s Experiental Lab and Passion for Innovation program, he’s overseen several projects using illusory or reconstructed worlds, like an explorable version of the Khufu Pyramid. (It’s in his blood. His parents were both engineers and his mother used to crack open the TV and use a welder on it; he assumed this was normal.)

In 2012, he started touring his latest show: the experimental, virtual-reality dance production Mr. and Mrs. Dream. It’s bizarre, and I mean that in the best way. Based on the works of absurdist playwright Eugène Ionesco, projectors, lights, and sensors (the dancers forbid the use of virtual reality goggles) combine to make the–uh–production something different, to say the least. Example scene: an apartment that crumbles away to reveal the universe hiding behind the exterior. (The French!)

I caught up with Marini at South By Southwest to talk about the project, coming soon to the U.S.

Popular Science: What is this project? How would you describe it?

Benoit Marini: The project is a mix between dance and 3-D technologies. It’s the marriage of art and science. It cannot be described as a ballet, as a traditional dance show. It’s not a play. It’s not a dance show. It’s a new kind of show.

As it makes the universe of Ionesco, which is really surreal, we decided to call that “virtual unreality,” because it brings life to fantasy, to something weird and strange, instead of giving life to something real.

The show involves two dancers, and they’re from the mind of the author, Eugène Ionesco, and we travel with them through his plays, through the interpretation of the dancers. I think the experience the people have when they come out of the show, they describe it as really unique.

PS: What’s the technical setup like?

BM: We designed a big box, called the Magic Box, because it creates an illusion, like a magician. This box is using screens on the side and on the back. On the floor there is a regular dance floor. Everything has the same color–it’s a light gray. We are using five or six projectors to project everything–everything is like one big universe, one big picture.

All of the projectors are located directly on top of the dancer. We use, for particular scenes, sensors located on the top to know their position in the space of the Magic Box. In other scenes, we’re using sensors directly on the bodies of the dancers so they can interact.

PS: Which part came first? The choreography or the technical side?

BM: When we started the project, they set up the music–it would not be the final music of the show, it would just be music that would be replaced by another original creation, from Laurent Garnier, who is a famous french DJ. They selected the music and searched for choreography, and during this time we were designing the box and creating the software. Then, during the rehearsals, they tried the test we’d prepared, they adapted and changed the choreography.

PS: Can you tell me about some of the specific scenes? There are surreal moments: You mentioned an apartment falls apart and you can see the universe outside of that. What are some other scenes you accomplished with this technology?

BM: I really like the first scene, because at the beginning, when you’re a spectator, you think it’s real. Time accelerates, a painting falls, there is a clock turning really quick, you see a storm, and everything starts to get old in the room and to vanish. The question it brings is: Is reality real, or only an illusion? This opening scene takes everyone into the fantasy world. You know you’re no longer in the real world.

All the scenes have their own meaning. You see a big character called The No Face–the character symbolizes God–and cells come from him, and that’s the rebirth of the character into the show. There’s one cell at the beginning–the dancers dance very close together–and then they split, like mitosis, and they have their own individuality.

PS: Tell me more about what you do in general. This was kind of a departure from the kinds of projects that you usually do?

BM: I’ve been working for Dassault for 14 years, and I’ve been working for the Passion for Innovation program [where the idea for the production was born] for 10 years. So we started small, with only a few people. But we started with a big project: it was about the Khufu Pyramid. We met a guy, and he had a theory, it was about the construction of the Khufu Pyramid. The Egyptians would know what would happen 10 years later, and they had a plan for that. It was related to the core of what we know. So we said, let’s use this theory and simulate it.

We changed the experience into experimental theater–it was like an immersive room, and people could learn in real time what was happening in ancient Egypt, and how this could be built.

I’ve also been working on realistic avatars–how you can quickly create your own avatar just by uploading one or two photos.

PS: Do you see this technology as something that could be used in more traditional theater? Will there be a virtual Death of a Salesman?

BM: There is no limitation when you create 3-D worlds–you can create whatever you want. And this kind of immersive display can be used to examine life, so I hope there will be new kinds of shows using this immersive technology. This is the beginning, I think. In the future, we can use it on the stage, or make it bigger, with more sensors or people inside. But what we already have is still bringing people the illusion that you have something alive in front of you.

Spacey: "Cards" not far from reality

Actor Kevin Spacey says his Netflix show “House of Cards” isn’t that far from the reality of politics in Washington.

“Look, for me, it’s like performance art,” he said Sunday on ABC’s “This Week.” “We can get done shooting on a day, and I’ll come home and turn on the news and think: ‘You know, our storylines are not that crazy, they’re really not.’”

With some exceptions, “This Week” host George Stephanopoulos cut in, such as politicians murdering people who get in their way.

“I’ve heard from lots of people,” Spacey said. “Some people feel that 99 percent of the show is accurate, and that the 1 percent that isn’t is that you could never get an education bill passed that quickly.”

Knocking Congress for its gridlock, Spacey added he wouldn’t be surprised if President Barack Obama wished he could get better results, like Spacey’s ruthless character, Frank Underwood.

“It must be really interesting for not just the American public but people around the world to view a very effective Congress that gets things done. So I can imagine that [Obama] must feel: ‘Gosh, I wish we could move that quickly,’” he said.

Spacey said he shadowed House Majority Whip Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) to prepare for the role and was struck by how difficult it is to get the party to vote one way or another.

“He actually said recently that, ‘If I could kill just one member of Congress, I’d never have to worry about another vote,’” Spacey said.

“House of Cards” had its second-season premiere on Friday.

Radiation-Resistant Swimwear and Underwear a Reality in Wake of Fukushima Disaster

The worlds first radiation-resistant clothing line. (Image: yamamoto-bio.com)IntelliHub – by Shepard Ambellas

JAPAN (INTELLIHUB) — After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, one can never be too safe, so recently Yamamoto has launched the world’s first radiation-resistant clothing line able to block both radioactive beta and gamma rays.

The outfit comes in 2-parts, an underwear section and a wetsuit like swimwear section as depicted in a recent “press release”.

When a human is equipped with both sections the suit is quite effective at blocking radiation and will likely usher in a new wave of radiation-resistant clothing. Possibly even stylish trends.

Although the suit is designed for use in radioactive emergency situations as well and may possibly aid divers in future disaster scenarios.

News.CNet.com reported, “It consists of a top and bottom and is made of lead-based fabric. Weighing 7.5 pounds and probably not very comfortable, it will be priced at about $ 825 when it goes on sale, according to Yamamoto.

Meanwhile, a wet suit-style garment it showed off recently can apparently block nearly 100 percent of beta rays.

Weighing some 6.6 pounds, the swimsuit is made of rubber embedded with carbon to block the radiation. It’s priced at about $ 1,073 and is slated to go on sale in late November.”[2]

American women were allegedly tricked into starring on a reality showwhere they thought they were competing for the love of Prince Harry (right), but instead, were fooled by look-alike Matt Hicks (left).

Gullible American girls were duped for weeks into trying to win the heart of a lookalike Prince Harry.

The royal wannabes were flown to the UK and put up at the stately Englefield House in Berkshire where they competed for the fourth-in-line to the throne’s affections.

Told that he wanted to find a sexy U.S. girl to settle down with, The Sun reports that the women attended a series of parties including a Roman orgy-themed event.

But they were left disappointed after the month-long trial ended when it was revealed to be a TV sting.

And the Prince Harry they were lusting after was in fact his doppelganger Matt Hicks, who at 20-years-old is nine years younger than the royal.

The Sun reports that Buckingham Palace knew nothing about the show, believed to be called “Dream Date,” which is being made by Ryan Seacrest and ZigZag Productions.

Reality Catching Up to the Political Class

Official Washington is always a decade or two behind the American people. That was true in 1963 when Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream for a better America and it’s true today.

The 1963 March on Washington came 16 years after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in major league baseball. Robinson did more than make news; he won the Rookie of the Year award in 1947, the MVP award two years later and entered the Hall of Fame in 1962. By then, black ballplayers were part of every major league team.

Another big moment took place in 1955 when Rosa Parks courageously refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery, Ala. Many other events, big and small, changed the nation’s attitudes on racial issues in the decades leading up to King’s most famous speech. But it had little impact on official Washington until the march forced the politicians to pay attention.

In retrospect, the most amazing thing about that day was the tone of King’s speech. He could have angrily denounced America for its racial practices. Instead, he lifted up a compelling vision of a nation where people would be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin. King claimed the timeless values of the Declaration of Independence were a legacy passed on to all Americans, black and white.

The march was a wake-up call that forced politicians to belatedly recognize that America had changed. The Civil Rights legislation that followed was merely ratifying a consensus that had already been reached by the American people.

Today, the politicians are again far behind. The new reality is captured in Nicco Mele’s book, “The End of Big”.

“The devices and connectivity so essential to modern life put unprecedented power in the hands of every individual — a radical redistribution of power that our traditional institutions don’t and perhaps can’t understand,” he writes.

In America, power is decentralizing and individuals are being empowered. While the trend has been building for decades, the politicians are just starting to recognize it.

One big reality check came earlier this year over a very modest trimming of the budget known as the sequester. In D.C., many expected the American people would rise up in revolt when the so-called “cuts” took effect. Instead, no one noticed. Outside of those who work for the government, there was hardly any impact.

For those in power, that was a terrible glimpse into the reality of how irrelevant much of what they do has become. For most Americans, it was a baby step in the right direction.

That growing political irrelevance was highlighted in a recent Atlantic magazine article by Ron Fournier. As a man immersed in the political class culture, he was concerned with what he saw in a study of the Millennial Generation — young people today are eager to serve their country, but they don’t think politics and government is the way to do that.

“They are more likely to be social entrepreneurs, working outside government to create innovative and measurably successful solutions to the nation’s problems,” the article said.

The notion that problems can be solved outside of Washington is the last thing politicians want to hear. But it’s the path our nation is following.

Fast Food Protests Divorced From Reality

If you were in the mood for a fast-food meal yesterday or today in several parts of the country, you were in for a surprise: loud protests outside the doors of some major chain restaurants. Several chains in metropolitan areas were affected by protests demanding higher wages at establishments like McDonald’s and Burger King. A local free daily newspaper in New York City, amNewYork, interviewed one of the workers leading the charge:

“When you have a family and work in the fast food industry, you just have to forget about it,” said Greg Reynoso, 27, a former Dominos Pizza employee who now organizes his peers.

The question that comes to mind first is this: Who said anyone could or should support an entire family on the salary of a fast-food employee? Has anyone ever reasonably made that promise?

Traditionally, one envisions a fast food employee as a teenager working their first job. The marketing strategy of these chains is that they are an inexpensive quick stop for lower and middle-income Americans to feed themselves and their families. Menu options are made affordable in many ways, not least of which is by keeping labor costs at a minimum. Any added costs, including labor, would then be passed down to the customer via increased prices, making these cheap meals unaffordable to those who need to watch every dime and dollar. If restaurants are unable to attract customers with their new, higher, price points the jobs of those striking as well as those who are not would disappear.

The group behind the latest protests, Fast Food Forward, calling for the minimum wage increase from $ 7.25 an hour to the laughable amount of $ 15 an hour in New York City, are no strangers to organized protest. The director of Fast Food Forward, Jonathan Westin, also runs New York Communities for Change (NYCC), the renamed and reorganized descendent of the now defunct ACORN, which was disgraced and brought down by an expose that made the activist James O’Keefe famous. In late 2011 NYCC was rocked by a Fox News report linking the group with paid protesters at Occupy Wall Street. At the time Fox News reported:

“They reminded us that we can get fired, sued, arrested for talking to the press,” the source said. “Then they went through the article point-by-point and said that the allegation that we pay people to protest isn’t true.”

“‘That’s the story that we’re sticking to,’” Westin said, according to the source.

The source said staffers at the meeting contested Westin’s denial:

“It was pretty funny. Jonathan told staff they don’t pay for protesters, but the people in the meeting  who work there objected and said, ‘Wait, you pay us to go to the protests every day?’ Then Jonathan said  ‘No, but that’s your job,’ and staffers were like, ‘Yeah, our job is to protest,’ and Westin said, ‘No your job is to fight for economic and social justice. We just send you to protest.’

“Staff said, ‘Yes, you pay us to carry signs.’ Then Jonathan says, ‘That’s your job.’ It went on like that back and forth for a while.”

Late last year and in April of this year the same kind of protests were held by Fast Food Forward, even sporting the exact same signs, with overt references to unionization in addition to $ 15/hour wages. In last year’s protest the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) was involved and in this year’s protests, their Facebook page has posted several times about the protests as well as lending their public support.

Is this a grassroots effort sweeping through the kitchens of fast-food restaurants across New York City and nationwide? Despite the full-page treatment in newspapers and stories on cable news to a movement with a large number of petition signatures and loud protests, it doesn’t appear to be. If it was, perhaps we would have heard about fast-food chains shutting down due to understaffing yesterday. Instead, we were treated to images of dozens of familiar prefabricated placards outside restaurants, carried through the city by a group linked to paying protesters in the recent past.

What’s in it for the groups organizing and perhaps even paying for these protests? If even a fraction of these restaurants were able to unionize, the payout for SEIU would be enormous. How would the workers who are supposedly leading this movement fair? Many of these employees, who were already facing reduced hours thanks to the union-supported ObamaCare, would likely see at least part of any raise going toward union dues. Restaurants, already operating on tight profit margins, would be forced to either close or raise prices in order to make up for increased labor costs, making meals unaffordable for many.

If restaurants were forced to close under the increased weight not only of increased labor costs, but also new ObamaCare regulation requirements, employees wouldn’t be asking for raises, they’d be asking for any job at all. Employees and other individuals in their income bracket would not only be left unemployed, but also without inexpensive meal options for their families. With all of this in mind one has to wonder: Who are these protest groups really advocating for?

Syria"s grim reality: Neither side can "win"

News analysis

DAMASCUS, Syria – It’s early Friday morning, a holy day in Syria’s capital. But war is no respecter of dawn or devotion; dense smoke is rising from several suburbs and the birdsong is punctured by the thud of falling artillery shells.

This is Damascus today; a city filled with the noise of war. MiG warplanes swoop overhead en route to rebel targets, mortars land amid dense housing, tanks rumble through suburban streets and, now and again, suicide bombers detonate their vehicles in the hope of killing President Bashar Assad’s men.

But there is a difference in the war here today, from when I last visited four months ago.

Assad’s men appear to be winning, in Damascus at least.

I walked through a suburb where the front line has been pushed back 600 yards by government troops. That may not seem much, but when every 50 yards can cost scores of men’s lives, even a modest advance can be significant.

The smoke from the shelling is further away from the city than before. Rebels are less able to launch attacks on the city center. In their stronghold of Jobar, a suburb of Damascus, which they have held for months, there are now around 200 rebels who are surrounded by government forces pounding them relentlessly.

Much of the fighting on Assad’s side is now being done by the militia men of the National Defense Force. They are part time soldiers, trained and armed in 40 days. Their motivation is simple and strong: to defend their districts and to drive out rebels they see as Islamist extremists.

It’s thought there are around 50,000 militia soldiers. They know their ground and are proving more adept at urban, street fighting than a regular army trained in national warfare and tank battles.

Syria’s Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Mekdad tells me “momentum is absolutely on our side…We have new tactics, new ways of dealing with armed groups. Now we know the art of fighting them.”

It’s a pattern repeated in many areas of Syria. In the country’s third largest city, Homs, a key suburb, Wadi Sayeh, was retaken by Assad’s men. In the South, rebels withdrew hundreds of men from one town because they couldn’t be resupplied with ammunition from Jordan. In areas of the North, rebels are running low on arms and ammunition because some donors can’t afford to keep paying for munitions two years into the war.

Loud explosions echo across Damascus as the Syrian Army continues operations to push rebels further from the capital. As the fighting rages footage has emerged of President Assad making a rare public appearance and being cheered by supporters. It’s not clear exactly when or where it was filmed.  ITV’s Bill Neely reports from Damascus.

So is this a tipping point in the war?

No.

Does it mean Assad will win?

No.

It all depends on what you mean by winning.

‘Winning’ by not losing
The former U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger once said that rebels in a guerrilla war only have to avoid losing to win. But in Syria that maxim might equally apply to the government.

After Tunisia’s leader fell in days, Egypt’s in weeks, Libya’s in months, the world assumed Assad would fall quickly. It’s now been years. And he’s still there.

He’s there partly because of Russian and Iranian help. He receives a steady supply of weapons from both.

The latest report in the New York Times suggests Russia has now given Syria advanced anti-ship cruise missiles, in order to deter the West from mounting a blockade or no-fly-zone against the country. Russia is also gathering a flotilla of warships near Syria in a show of strength and support for its ally, before next month’s planned peace talks in Geneva. Russia’s more conventional weapons stocks have been supplying the guns of the government for two years.

Syria’s armed forces are also being bolstered by men from the Lebanese organization Hezbollah, men trained and in many cases, practiced in urban warfare.

Rebels losing propaganda war
There is an ebb and flow to most wars. At the moment the government has the flow and rebels are on the ebb.

They are losing ground in the propaganda war, too. Several times this week they have posted brutal videos on the Internet, demonstrating their ruthlessness.

In one, an Islamist fighter, from the Jabhat al-Nusra group that is affiliated with al-Qaeda, appears to publicly executes 11 men kneeling in front of him. Before shooting each of them once in the head, he accuses the men of being soldiers responsible for a massacre. It’s one of two brutal execution videos posted by the Al-Nusra group in recent days. Another, video widely circulated in Syria, appears to show a rebel fighter from Homs cutting a hole in a dead soldier’s chest, removing the heart and appearing to take a bite.

It may be an ancient tactic of war, to dehumanize and terrify your enemy, but the rebels are making many in the outside world queasy and ready to question whether they are worthy of further support. Memories of smiling, flag waving, peaceful pro-democracy demonstrators have dimmed.

And the opposition’s lack of organization is becoming a real problem.

There is, arguably, no such thing as the Free Syrian Army. Aid organizations say they have to deal with around 300 different rebel groups, many loosely grouped under the umbrella of the FSA. Many others are rivals of the FSA, like the al-Nusra group. An “army” is usually something with a command structure and a unified organization. The FSA appears to be nothing of the kind.

As for a political opposition to Assad, the Syrian National Coalition is far from a united coalition. Politicians in the West are frustrated by the apparent inability of the “opposition” to provide a credible alternative to the Assad government.

What international ‘policy’?
All those issues have left supporters of Syria’s initial revolution in a quandary.

A look back at the conflict that has overtaken the country.

The U.S., Britain, France and others are now seriously considering sending weapons to certain, vetted, rebel groups. But which ones? Would the apparent heart-eater’s group qualify? How can Europe or America guarantee that the arms they ship will not end up in the hands of Islamists who later turn them against the West? Just remember Benghazi and the murder of a U.S. Ambassador happened in a Libyan city the West began a war to save.

The American administration seems to be indecisive in the face of a seemingly insoluble crisis, haunted by intervention in Iraq, talking about an ever thickening red line on the use of chemical weapons, but concerned about arming the wrong people a year too late.

Britain and France are pushing for the arming of rebels, while Germany and Austria are pointing to what they see as the folly of doing so.

Qatar and Saudi Arabia are pouring arms into Syria, money that is making the Islamists of al-Nusra the most effective fighting force on the rebel side. The Gulf States have no interest in the victory of “freedom and democracy” in Syria. As Sunni Muslim states, they want to weaken Shia-dominated nations like Syria and Iran. For many in Saudi Arabia, the advance of a Salafist-Islamist group like the black flagged Nusra Front is an added bonus.

More losers, than winners
Syria’s is now more than a sectarian conflict. It’s a regional conflict in microcosm, where Iran and Saudi Arabia face off, where Russia and the West arm wrestle, where Israel and Turkey spar for regional dominance and where Syrians die in the tens of thousands.

My old notebook records a death toll of 8,000. That seemed astonishingly high to me, just a year ago. Now it is ten times that and I’m no longer surprised. In fact the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a U.K. based organization that tracks the death toll, now puts it at more than 90,000.

Syria’s story today is one of massacres and executions, gruesomely recorded for history on video, of ruthless attacks by both sides, of MiG warplanes bombing men with mortars and machine guns, a chronicle of death foretold, everywhere.

President Assad may be “winning” the war now, whatever winning means. Rebels may “win” in the end by seeing him leave office. But nobody is really winning.

This is, and has been for months, an unwinnable war, deadlocked and deadly. Neither side can break through and neither side will give up.

Today in Syria, there are only losers.
