Cancer Patient and ObamaCare Critic Says He"s Being Audited by IRS

A cancer patient, who publicly discussed the cancellation of his insurance under ObamaCare, now says he has been informed by the Internal Revenue Service that he is going to be audited.

Bill Elliot appeared on Fox News on November 7th to discuss the cancellation of his insurance. He claims he was told that his cancer was considered “beyond the catastrophic previous condition” and his plan was being canceled because of ObamaCare regulations.

Elliot, who has Stage 4 cancer, informed viewers he wasn’t going to pay the $ 1,500 a month for the new plan being offered, preferring not to burden his family and to “let nature take it’s course.”

After his story attracted media attention, Elliot says his insurance company decided to let him keep his coverage:

“Well, the update on my health is: I went to the doctor last week and he told me that I was in full remission. So, that’s good news; I’m getting better. Thanks to Steve, I wouldn’t have found none of this out, ’cause I wouldn’t have had health insurance to go back. So, I found out that I’m in full remission and that I’ve got four months to go – not four months to go, but be checked every four months.

“So, Monday I got a certified letter. I didn’t get my mail until late, so this past Tuesday I went and picked it up. Lo and behold, it’s from the IRS saying, “You’re going to be audited for the tax year of 2009.”

Putin critic convicted, jailed for 5 years

MOSCOW — Russia’s leading opposition figure Alexei Navalny was jailed for five years on Thursday after being found guilty of embezzlement, a verdict that could prevent him challenging Vladimir Putin for the presidency.

The 37-year-old lawyer turned anti-corruption blogger was found guilty of stealing about $ 480,000 from state-owned timber company Kirovles. Navalny has said the trial is politically motivated.

At a hearing in city of Kirov, Judge Sergei Blinov handed down a five-year sentence. The case’s prosecutor had called for a six-year prison term and the crime carried a maximum sentence of 10 years.

“The court, having examined the case, has established that Navalny organized a crime and … the theft of property on a particularly large scale,” the judge said.

Navalny is the most prominent opposition leader to be tried in Russia since Soviet times.

He rose to prominence in the wake of the last Russian parliamentary and presidential elections in late 2011 and early 2012 and has been a thorn in Putin’s side.

He once branded Putin’s United Russia as “the party of crooks and thieves” — a phrase which became popular during the anti-government demonstrations following the elections.

Up to 100,000 demonstrators took to Moscow’s streets in cold winter conditions to protest the parliamentary election results amid widespread reports of violations of rules at polling stations.

Navalny took to the stage and called for a Russia without Putin. “Who is the power here? We are the power here!” he bellowed.

His political ambitions have long been public. Navalny has said that he wants to run for the 2018 presidency.  Earlier this week, he received confirmation of his registration request to take part in the upcoming Moscow mayoral elections. They are due to take place in September.

Navalny’s trial has been compared to that of the former oil tycoon Mikhail Khodorkovsky, once one of the richest men in Russia, and an outspoken critic of Putin. He has been in prison since his arrest 2005, and has been found guilty of tax evasion and fraud in two legal cases. Sources say that a third trial is already in the works against the former billionaire.

However, Alexei Mukin the director of the Center for Political Information believes that the “only similarity between Navalny and Khodorkovsky is that they both are positioning their cases as political.”

Mukhin said that the case was likely to spark condemnation both in Russia and abroad.

An unsanctioned demonstration was already planned for Thursday night near Moscow’s Red Square. Security was tight around the area on Thursday morning.

Report: Stark Putin critic Navalny hit with criminal conviction

  • Alexei Navalny is one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most outspoken critics

  • He wants to run for mayor of Moscow

  • If the conviction stands, Navalny will not be able to run for public office

  • The activist has called the trial politically motivated

Moscow (CNN) — Alexei Navalny has said all along a court would convict him. Not because he’s guilty, but because it would prevent him from running as mayor of Moscow.

On Thursday, a Russian court did just that to Navalny, one of Russian President Vladimir Putin’s most outspoken critics.

The court, in the city of Kirov, ruled Navalny was guilty of misappropriating about $ 500,000 worth of lumber from a state-owned company.

If the conviction stands, Navalny will not be able to run for public office.

The prosecutor has asked the court to sentence him to six years on prison.

The activist has called the trial politically motivated. He has said it’s retaliation for taking to task the Kremlin.

Three months ago, Navalny’s voice boomed out over a microphone from a Moscow stage in front of tens of thousands, as he blasted Russia’s most powerful man as the foe of democracy.

CNN’s Matthew Chance reported from Moscow; Ben Brumfield wrote from Atlanta.

VIDEO: Melissa McCarthy Called "Hippo," "Tractor-Sized" by Movie Critic Rex Reed

Melissa McCarthy and Jason Batemen star in the new comedy, Identity Thief, hitting theaters this weekend, and unfortunately the comedy aspect is being overshadowed by an obnoxious review. Film critic Rex Reed absolutely ripped apart Melissa in his review in the New York Observer, calling her “tractor-sized,” a “screeching, humongous creep,” and “a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success.” Then Reed tops it off by calling Melissa a “female hippo.” It’s one thing to insult the movie, but attacking Melissa for her size is just wrong!
