The White House Hosts Its First-Ever Student Film Festival

Back in November, we asked K-12 students across the country to create short films on the role that technology plays in their classrooms. We asked them to tell us why technology is so important, and how it will change the educational experience for kids in the future.

And they responded with nearly 3,000 films.

Today, in collaboration with the American Film Institute, we hosted more than a dozen of the young filmmakers at the first-ever White House Student Film Festival, where we presented our 16 official selections. Special guests included Kal Penn, Bill Nye, and Neil deGrasse Tyson, along with Conan O’Brien who addressed the students by video.

To kick things off, President Obama addressed the attendees and told the young filmmakers how great their movies were:

[I]n my official capacity as President, let me just say these movies are awesome. Like all great movies, yours do something special — they tell a story. They help us understand, in this case, the amazing things that are going on in classrooms and how technology is empowering our students and broadening their imaginations and challenging them to dream bigger and reach further.

The President also talked briefly about his ConnectED initiative, which aims to connect 99 percent of America’s students to next-generation, high-speed Internet over the next five years. He announced $ 400 million in new commitments from Adobe and Prezi to make free software available to teachers and students, helping introduce creative learning materials to America’s classrooms. Coupled with the $ 750 million in commitments that the President announced earlier this month, private-sector leaders have pledged – in February alone – to invest more than $ 1 billion in America’s students.

Carlos Maza: Fox Hosts Family Research Council To Continue Its Fact-Free Attack On Transgender Student Bill

Fox News hosted a spokesman from an anti-gay hate group to continue the network’s ongoing assault on a California bill that will allow transgender students to have access to school facilities and teams that correspond with their gender identity.

Following Gov. Jerry Brown’s signing of a law that prohibits California public schools from discriminating against transgender students, Fox News invited Peter Sprigg, spokesman for the Family Research Council (FRC), to appear on the August 13 edition of America’s Newsroom.

Sprigg – whose history of extreme anti-LGBT commentary includes suggesting that gay people should be exported from the U.S. -  asserted that the law would ignore “biological reality” while pandering to students’ “transient feelings and emotions”:

Elementary School Hosts Toy Gun Buyback

ToyGun 300x164 Elementary School Hosts Toy Gun Buyback

The unprecedented overreach of public school administrators regarding the issue of guns continues at breakneck speed. Regardless of context, children now regularly face draconian punishment for even mentioning the word.

If rational thought ever again prevails in America, we might look back to one event signaling the point this leftist movement jumped the shark: an elementary school’s toy gun buyback program.

Charles Hill, principal of Strobridge Elementary School in California, organized the “Safety Day” event and offers students books and a chance to win one of four new bikes as incentives to bring in their water guns and other toys he said make it “easier for them to use a real gun.”

Gun rights advocate Yih-Chau Chang of Responsible Citizens of California is a vocal critic of the program, suggesting its mission is misguided.  Calling it a “normal part of growing up,” he explained children have long played imaginative games involving guns and other weapons.

Despite his good intentions, Chang said Hill’s program “doesn’t really educate children about guns or gun safety,” citing the fact firearms are “more often used in defensive ways which prevent violent crime from occurring in the first place.”  Hill also expressed concern that “one of our sixth-graders wanting to fake someone out at a 7-Eleven” would be shot by someone mistaking a toy gun for the real thing.

Of course, Chang responded with the fact that toymakers are “forced to paint guns in bright colors … that make it virtually impossible for an officer to mistake it for a real gun.”  Still, Hill stands by his controversial mission, saying “we need to start early,” apparently through compulsory indoctrination, to assure “older kids” do “not think guns are cool.”

The demonization of guns and their owners is boilerplate rhetoric on the left. Reaching an increasingly younger audience merely creates an increased likelihood the next generation will embrace this misguided worldview.
