Open letter to EU Foreign Ministers

european-union

[ Editors Note: This is a bit of a curve ball here, suggesting that the Zionist Lobby still have major assets under it"s control to circumvent the trend away from sanctions as the nuclear talks proceed.  This is even more surprising in that the courts already ruled on cases being arbitrary and with no foundation.

Of course Iran will be seeking to recover financial damages in those cases. But as damages would be paid by goyim, that traditionally is of no concern to your hard core Zionists.

This will certainly be a ongoing story and we will be looking to map out who the Israelis have used in this last ditch effort to keep the phony Iran nuke threat in play as it actually is a key component of their scam.

I thought this previous Gush Shalom letter below to the EU foreign ministers showed the flip side of the coin in terms of attitude. Peace groups like Gush Shalom have a total media black out here in the US, all part of the never ending psyops inflicted on the American people by you know who, and all of their helpers here...Jim W. Uri Avnery – the Old Man of the Israeli peace movement

Uri Avnery and Adam Keller of Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace Bloc, sent an open letter to the European Union Foreign Ministers due to meet tomorrow (Sept. 6).

We called upon them to persist with their outspoken opposition to settlement construction in the Occupied Territories.

Media reports indicate that settlements and the situation between Israel and the Palestinians are likely to figure on the meeting’s agenda, together with other Middle Eastern issues such as the situation in Syria and Egypt.

“We would like you to know that many in Israel consider your position against settlements to be an expression of true friendship and concern towards Israel” stated the Gush Shalom letter. “It is Israel’s existential interest to come to terms with the fact that in today’s world it is unacceptable to rule over another people by force, confiscate that people’s land and settle on it. The European Union would best help Israel’s true interests by insisting unflinchingly on this principle.”

Following is the full text of the letter

To the Foreign Ministers and representatives of the European Union

” Something old, with something new “

We, Israeli citizens deeply concerned for the future of our country and our region, write you this letter in advance of the meeting of the EU Foreign Affairs Council, scheduled for September 6.

Specifically, we write you as members of Gush Shalom, the Israeli Peace Bloc, a grassroots peace movement which was founded in 1992.

Ever since then, our movement has been struggling to engage the political system and promote the idea of peace between Israel and its Palestinian and other Arab neighbors.

It is our firm belief that Israel’s long-term survival and prosperity depend upon our country’s ability to achieve integration in the region.

An indispensable first step would be an Israeli withdrawal from the territories occupied in 1967 and the long overdue creation of an independent Palestinian state in these territories.

In recent years we have become increasingly concerned at the upsurge of expansionist nationalism in the Israeli society and political system. Such manifestations are often given a religious justification through a tendentious and selective interpretation of the Jewish Scriptures.

Representatives of such tendencies occupy key positions in successive Israeli cabinets, including the current one. This expansionist nationalism manifests itself especially in a determination to hold on to the territories occupied by Israel’s armed forces since 1967 and a relentless drive to maintain and extend Israeli settlement in these territories.

Not only do the settlements constitute a blatant violation of International Law and a major obstacle to any chance of Israel achieving peace with its neighbors, but a big part of our country’s economic resources are annually poured into the bottomless hole of the settlement project, to the great detriment of Israeli society as a whole.

Standing up to evil and power

Standing up to evil and power

In this situation we are writing to you, highly cognizant of the crucial role which the International Community in general and the European Union in particular could and should play.

Specifically, we refer to the Council of Foreign Affairs resolution of 10 December 2012, in which the EU stated its commitment to “Ensure that, in line with International Law, all agreements between the State of Israel and the European Union must unequivocally and explicitly indicate their inapplicability to the territories occupied by Israel in 1967, namely the Golan Heights, the West Bank including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip”.

Further, we refer to the guidelines published by the European Commission on 19 July this year, aimed at an implementation in practice of the above resolution.

As you must be well aware, the publication of the July 19 guidelines had a far greater impact in Israel than any earlier EU statement on this issue – for the simple reason that this was the first time that the EU went beyond a verbal disapproval of the settlements.

Specifically, Israeli participation in the European Horizon 2020 Project was made conditional upon the Government of Israel stating explicitly its adherence to the above principles.

The Netanyahu Government is faced with a grave dilemma, having in effect to choose between either promoting the settlement project or gaining the very considerable benefits which Israeli science, academic life and economy could derive from participation in Horizon 2020 – as these two goals were made mutually exclusive.

As published several times in the Israeli media, the Netanyahu Government hopes to avoid this dilemma by persuading the European Union to amend or “soften” your position. Moreover, there were references to such approaches by the Government of Israel featuring on the agenda of your September 6 meeting.

Gush Shalom - on the front lines - 2001. Uri is 90 now.

Gush Shalom – on the front lines – 2001. Uri is 90 now.

We would like you to know that many in Israel consider your recent position, as it stands, to be an expression of true friendship and concern towards Israel.

It is vital for Israel, our country, to adopt the norms of behavior prevailing among Western Democracies, of which Israel aspires to be one.

It is Israel’s existential interest to come to terms with the fact that in today’s world it is unacceptable to rule over another people by force, confiscate that people’s land and settle on it. The European Union would best help Israel’s true interests by insisting unflinchingly on this principle.

We are well aware that, as well as the above issue, you are urgently concerned with the situation in other countries in our region – notably, Syria and Egypt, and that these are very likely to figure prominently on the agenda of your forthcoming meeting.

It would be wrong to assert that all the Middle East’s problems derive solely from the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. But it would be quite right to say that an end to Israeli occupation and a solution to our very long-lasting conflict could exert a positive, calming influence throughout the region.

Yours,   Uri Avnery and Adam Keller – On behalf of The Gush Shalom Movement

Japan ministers in Yasukuni visit

Japanese lawmakers visit the Yasukuni Shrine in Tokyo on 15 August 2013Lawmakers’ visits anger Japan’s neighbours, who say they glorify militarism

Two Japanese cabinet ministers have visited the controversial Yasukuni shrine in Tokyo on the anniversary of Japan’s surrender in World War II.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe sent a ritual offering but was expected to stay away, in an apparent move intended to avoid inflaming tensions with neighbours.

The shrine commemorates Japan’s war dead but also honours several convicted war criminals.

Previous visits by politicians have angered China and South Korea.

They see the shrine as a symbol of Japan’s war-time aggression.

‘General judgement’

Early on Thursday’s Mr Abe’s ministers for internal affairs and the North Korea issue, Yoshitaka Shindo and Keiji Furuya, visited the shrine in central Tokyo to pay their respects.

More lawmakers were expected to visit during the day.

Mr Abe, who visited the shrine in October 2012 when he was the leader of the opposition, sent a ritual offering with an aide but was not expected in person.

Yasukuni Shrine

  • Built in 1869 under the Emperor Meiji

  • Venerates the souls of Japan’s war dead

  • Those enshrined include war criminals

  • Japan’s neighbours say it represents the country’s past militarism

“The leader wanted to pass along his prayers for the people who died in the war and apologise for not making a personal visit,” Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) official Koichi Hagiuda said.

“He considered from various angles and made a general judgement not to come to pray today,” the official, who made the offering on behalf of Mr Abe, added.

The shrine commemorates some 2.5 million Japanese men, women and children who died for their country in wars.

But the souls of 14 Class A convicted war criminals from World War II are also enshrined there, including Prime Minister General Hideki Tojo, who was executed for war crimes in 1948.

The shrine is also deeply political, reports the BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes from Tokyo. Today its history museum continues to peddle a version of World War II history that either ignores or denies the crimes committed by Japan in Korea and China.

Visits to the shrine by lawmakers anger and offend Japan’s neighbours, to whom the shrine represents Japan’s past militarism, including the colonisation of the Korean peninsula and the invasion of China.

This year’s anniversary comes with ties tense between Tokyo and governments in Beijing and Seoul. China and Japan remain locked in a bitter dispute over East China Sea islands that both claim.

South Korea and Japan, meanwhile, are involved in a row over an island midway between the two over which both say they have sovereignty.

European Ministers Agree to Stricter Tobacco Laws

LONDON — Cigarette packs in Europe will have to carry bigger health warnings, and products with menthol or other flavorings face a total ban, under an agreement European Union ministers struck Friday after spirited negotiations.

A small group led by Poland won a reprieve for slim cigarettes, which are popular among female voters in several ex-Communist nations and had also been threatened with a ban.

The agreement Friday is not the final decision, as the new smoking rules would require approval by the European Parliament before coming into force. But the compromise is a milestone because it secured the support of national governments, including some that had fought hard to soften measures opposed by the tobacco industry and some smoker advocacy groups.

The measures reflect a concerted effort by European policy makers to reduce the attractiveness of tobacco to younger smokers in hopes of preventing them from taking up a habit notoriously hard to kick. Cigarettes with menthol and other flavorings are deemed easier for novices to smoke.

Under the deal Friday, a health warning combining pictures and text must cover 65 percent of the front and the back of all cigarette packs. That represents a reduction from the proposal going into the meeting of a 75 percent minimum, but it is an increase from the current 40 percent figure.

James Reilly, the health minister of Ireland, which holds the European Union’s rotating presidency, told a news conference in Luxembourg that about 700,000 Europeans die every year of tobacco-related causes and that smoking is “one of the greatest preventable and avoidable threats to health.” Packaging that appeals to younger smokers, he said, was tantamount to “entrapment of our young people.”

The ministers also agreed on tighter regulation of electronic cigarettes, which will require authorization if they exceed a nicotine threshold.

Currently, only some of the European Union nations apply such restrictions on electronic cigarettes, which produce vapors from a nicotine liquid, rather than burning tobacco. But Tonio Borg, the European commissioner in charge of health and consumer policy, said that e-cigarettes “can give a false sense of security.”

The debate over flavored cigarettes mirrors a longstanding debate in the United States. In 2009, Congress passed a law prohibiting flavorings but exempted menthol after heavy lobbying by the tobacco industry. Although Congress gave the Food and Drug Administration the authority to ban menthol if this was deemed appropriate on health grounds, the F.D.A. has studied the matter but has taken no action.

In Europe, a ban on menthol cigarettes would not go into effect for some time. National governments would have up to three years to implement the rules after the new tobacco law came into force. And the rollout of the new law itself, if finally approved later this year, could take about 18 months, Mr. Borg said.

Slim cigarettes, which were exempted from the compromise Friday, had been a target because of the fear that their supposed allure attracts young women to smoking.

Though slim cigarettes will still be permitted, new packaging and health warning requirements will prevent their sale in the smallest types of packs in which they are currently sold. “Tobacco should look like tobacco and not like a perfume or a candy,” Mr. Borg said. “And it should taste like tobacco.”

In light of the compromises, antismoking campaigners expressed disappointment that large pictorial warnings were not made mandatory on all cigarette packs. The new rules would be less strict than in Australia, which has legislated against logos and colorful designs, and New Zealand, which has proposed doing the same.

Florence Berteletti Kemp, director of the Smoke Free Partnership, a European organization that promotes tobacco control and research, described the outcome Friday as “disappointing.”

“Despite the formidable efforts of the Irish presidency, the agreement adopted goes against key measures such as large pictorial warnings, which cost nothing to governments but would better protect millions of European children,” she said in a statement. “It is outrageous to see so many concessions made to an industry that buys its wealth and influence by marketing a deadly product.”
