Netanyahu Orders Israel Army To Prepare For Possible Military Strike Against Iran In 2014

Netanyahu Orders Israel Army To Prepare For Possible Military Strike Against Iran In 2014

Back in 2013 it was Syria where the world was gearing for imminent military action after a relentless series of false flag provocations by the United States (intent on securing a Qatar gas pipeline to Europe) which in the last minute was deftly diffused by Vladimir Putin. In 2014, it was the Ukraine’s turn, and after a prolonged campaign orchestrated by Victoria Nuland and the US State Department (again) which succeeded in the now traditional violent coup (see Egypt and Libya), once again saw Putin victorious, after yesterday’s annexation of the all important Crimean peninsula, achieved without the firing of one shot. So now that Putin has succeeded in trouncing the US twice in a row, it is time to poke some old, well-known geopolitical wounds, such as Iran. And who better to do it than Israel, where as Haaretz reports, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon have ordered the army to continue preparing for a possible military strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities at a cost of at least 10 billion shekels ($ 2.89 billion) this year, despite the talks between Iran and the West, according to recent statements by senior military officers.”

To be sure there is a tangible benefit for all those involved: more war means more military spending means more “broken windows” means more “GDP.”

Three Knesset members who were present at Knesset joint committee hearings on Israel Defense Forces plans that were held in January and February say they learned during the hearings that 10 billion shekels to 12 billion shekels of the defense budget would be allocated this year for preparations for a strike on Iran, approximately the same amount that was allocated in 2013.

Yet unlike the US where warmongering has become an art, if not a science, in Israel these things are taken far more seriously:

The IDF representatives said the army had received a clear directive from government officials from the political echelon – meaning Netanyahu and Ya’alon – to continue readying for a possible independent strike by Israel on the Iranian nuclear sites, regardless of the talks now happening between Iran and the West, the three MKs said.

As for the diplomatic cover for a potential attack, it is well-known, and the same one used for the past 3 years – attack Iran before it can nuke Israel and obliterate it from the face of the earth.

Ever since the interim accord between Iran and the six powers was reached, Netanyahu has stressed that Israel will not consider itself bound by it. In the last few weeks, as talks on a permanent accord have resumed, Netanyahu has upped his rhetoric on the Iranian issue, and is again making implied threats about a possible unilateral Israeli strike on the Iranian nuclear sites.

“My friends, I believe that letting Iran enrich uranium would open up the floodgates,” Netanyahu said at the AIPAC conference earlier this month. “That must not happen. And we will make sure it does not happen.”

Ironically, this time Israel may see pushback from none other than the US itself, which mysteriously over the past 6 months has transformed itself from Iran’s most hated enemy to a willing partner who sees Iran as nothing short of a frontier market (not to mention source of natural resources).

However, the US too realizes that it needs “military outs” with Ukraine seemingly diffused for the time being. Which is why yesterday, a few hours after Russia peacefully annexed Crimea, the US made its feeble response known, when it suspended operations of the Syrian Embassy in Washington and its consulates and told diplomats and staff who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents to leave the country. The justification of this oddly timed move came from the U.S. special envoy for Syria Daniel Rubinstein who said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad had refused to step down and was responsible for atrocities against Syrians.

And this was news to the US? More from Reuters:

“We have determined it is unacceptable for individuals appointed by that regime to conduct diplomatic or consular operations in the United States,” said Rubinstein, whose appointment was announced by the State Department on Monday.

“Consequently, the United States notified the Syrian government today that it must immediately suspend operations of its embassy in Washington, D.C., and its honorary consulates in Troy, Michigan, and Houston, Texas,” he said in a statement.

In other words, the US tried to impose its “moral superiority” codex on yet another country, which for all intents and purposes was a proxy of Russian strength in the middle east, i.e., punish the Kremlin by kicking out Syria. Surely Putin was in tears.

The only problem is that it is now beyond obvious to virtually everyone in the world that the framework of Pax Americana is only applicable to the increasingly self-deluded United States, and of course the Group of 7 most insolvent nations, whose debt ponzi schemes are ever more reliant on a centrally planned regime of low interest rates and free money. For everyone else it is now just as obvious that when provoked, the best the US can do is simply impose some sanctions, and shut down embassies… while it prints trillions of dollars in “paper wealth” each year of course.

PRESSURE MOUNTS ON OBAMA OVER UKRAINE, RUSSIA DIGS IN – Kerry to Kiev – Snow cancels House, Senate votes – Obama budget coming Tues. – Netanyahu on the Hill

UKRAINE: PRESSURE MOUNTS ON OBAMA AS RUSSIA DIGS IN – Peter Baker writes on A1 of the New York Times: “As Russia dispatched more forces and tightened its grip on the Crimean Peninsula on Sunday, President Obama embarked on a strategy intended to isolate Moscow and prevent it from seizing more Ukrainian territory even as he was pressured at home to respond more forcefully. Working the telephone from the Oval Office, Mr. Obama rallied allies, agreed to send Secretary of State John Kerry to Kiev and approved a series of diplomatic and economic moves intended to ‘make it hurt,’ as one administration official put it. But the president found himself besieged by advice to take more assertive action.

– “‘Create a democratic noose around Putin’s Russia,’ urged Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina. ‘Revisit the missile defense shield,’ suggested Senator Marco Rubio, Republican of Florida. ‘Cancel Sochi,’ argued Representative Mike Rogers, the Michigan Republican who leads the Intelligence Committee, referring to the Group of 8 summit meeting to be hosted by President Vladimir V. Putin. Kick ‘him out of the G-8’ altogether, said Senator Richard J. Durbin of Illinois, the Democratic whip.” http://nyti.ms/1i62atN

– But no one in Washington is calling for armed U.S. intervention, notes POLITICO’s Alex Burns: “For Democrats and Republicans who spent much of the last century competing to be Moscow’s most credible antagonist, and much of the past decade fighting over which party killed terrorists more ruthlessly, there was no rush to the battle domestic stations over the weekend.”  http://politi.co/1luo6iH

– SECRETARY OF STATE JOHN KERRY will travel to Kiev on Tuesday “to show support for the new leadership there in the face of the Russian military intervention,” writes the Washington Post’s Anne Gearan. “Kerry on Sunday called the rapid movement of Russian troops across the border into Ukraine’s Crimea region unwarranted and outside international law and said Russia would suffer economic and political consequences. ‘He’s going to lose on the international stage,’ Kerry said on NBC’s ‘Meet the Press,’ referring to Putin. ‘Russia is going to lose, the Russian people are going to lose, and he’s going to lose all of the glow that came out of the Olympics, his $ 60 billion extravaganza.’” http://wapo.st/1hFeVbe

OBAMA SENDS BUDGET TO HILL TUESDAY – Kristina Peterson reports for the WSJ: “President Barack Obama’s budget for fiscal year 2015 will be delivered this week to a Congress defused of much of the partisan tension over spending that has left the Capitol in a state of nearly constant fiscal crisis. Lawmakers in both chambers already have agreed on their overarching spending figure for the next fiscal year under the bipartisan budget agreement reached last December by House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R., Wis.) and his Senate counterpart, Patty Murray (D., Wash.). The result is that the budget push-and-pull between Mr. Obama and Congress skips ahead to the nitty-gritty spending decisions lawmakers make while drafting the traditional 12 spending bills known as the appropriations process. …

– “The White House blueprint is expected to include changes to the tax code to limit what it views as tax evasion among some U.S. companies with overseas operations, a boost for infrastructure funding and an expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit for workers without children, among other provisions. The budget also is expected to point to an overhaul of the immigration system, currently stalled in Congress, an action administration officials say could help reduce the deficit.” http://on.wsj.com/1ojsJJw

AFTER BRUISING IMMIGRATION FIGHT, RUBIO EYES COMEBACK – Manu Raju writes for the hometown paper: “Marco Rubio probably wouldn’t have been the biggest draw in Alabama last year, but last week he had big donors dropping big checks. The Florida Republican, who championed the Senate immigration bill last year, swung by a state that has taken a tough stand against illegal immigrants and has repeatedly elected the chief opponent of the Senate plan. But last Thursday evening, deep-pocketed Birmingham donors paid up to $ 32,000 apiece to schmooze with Rubio, raising more than $ 300,000 for the Senate GOP campaign committee. Rubio’s foray into the Deep South shows how quickly he has tried to put the bitter immigration fight behind him as he positions himself for what close allies say is an increasingly likely presidential bid in 2016.” http://politi.co/1fBTJia

TODAY IN CONGRESS – It’s a snow day for the House and Senate, which have both cancelled their sessions today. They’re expected to be back on Tuesday.

AROUND THE HILL – Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Republican Leader Mitch McConnell are expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at 3:45 p.m. in S-216. Netanyahu meets with Speaker John Boehner and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi at 4:45 p.m. in H-207. Those meetings could be cancelled due to snow. At 11 a.m. Tuesday, House Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp keynotes a tax reform forum in Rayburn 2325. At 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Camp headlines a Christian Science Monitor breakfast at the St. Regis Hotel.

BLACK CAUCUS: BASTION OF SENIORITY – POLITICO’s John Bresnahan crunches the numbers:  “If the 84-year-old [John] Conyers wins reelection in November to a 26th term — as expected — he will become the dean of the House, the most senior member by length of service, replacing his onetime boss and Democratic icon, retiring Rep. John Dingell of Michigan. Conyers and other African-American lawmakers, in fact, belong to one of the few remaining bastions of incumbency — the Congressional Black Caucus.

– “Under current projections, the 114th Congress will include roughly 70 members who have been in the House for 20 years or more. One-fifth of those veteran lawmakers — 14 — will be black Democrats, including the two longest-serving members of the House, Conyers and Rep. Charles Rangel of New York. Rangel was first elected in 1970. Thanks to that seniority, CBC members could end up as top Democrat on at least seven major committees next year, including Education and the Workforce; Financial Services; Homeland Security; Judiciary; Oversight and Government Reform; Science, Space and Technology; and Veterans’ Affairs.” http://politi.co/1i5IciH

“Shifting Senate Landscape Draws New Faces,: GOP Used Polls to Woo Rep. Gardner to Challenge Sen. Udall in Colorado,” By the Wall Street Journal’s Janet Hook and Patrick O’Connor: “Rep. Cory Gardner of Colorado is in an enviable position, with a safe House seat and bright prospects for joining his party’s leadership. So when GOP officials last year asked him to give it all up to run for the Senate, he declined. Last week, amid more appeals from party leaders and weak poll numbers for Democrats, Mr. Gardner reversed course—a significant boost to GOP hopes not only for unseating Democratic Sen. Mark Udall but also for claiming a Senate majority. The story of Mr. Gardner’s change of mind shows how the political environment has deteriorated for congressional Democrats ahead of the midterm elections, which historically are difficult for the president’s party. It also is a reminder that campaigns are made or broken not just by money or message, but by who decides to run.” http://on.wsj.com/1bZqN8O

– And former Mississippi Rep. Travis Childers jumped into the race Friday against incumbent GOP Sen. Thad Cochran, sensing an opening for Democrats given what’s becoming a nasty Republican primary. http://politi.co/1eLgXXz

THE MESSY RACE FOR STEVE STOCKMAN’S SEAT – Katie Glueck reports for POLITICO: “A dozen Republicans are vying to replace the firebrand conservative congressman, who isn’t seeking reelection amid a quixotic bid for the Senate. And in the Lone Star State’s 36th Congressional District, which stretches from the Houston suburbs out to East Texas, activists are struggling to wade through all the options, while the large, right-leaning cast of candidates is competing to curry favor with the region’s highly conservative voters. At a recent debate, for instance, some of the biggest points of contention centered on whether to use drones on the border and whether to impeach President Barack Obama.” http://politi.co/1fBVn36

CRITICS HIT CONGRESS OVER NSA OVERSIGHT – Darren Samuelsohn reports for POLITICO; “Splashing America’s surveillance secrets on the front pages of newspapers for nearly nine months has created an array of scapegoats, from Edward Snowden to the NSA and President Barack Obama. Now the blame is also spreading to Congress. Cries of lax Capitol Hill oversight are piling up as Snowden-inspired stories continue to explode in the media, casting doubt on whether the legislative watchdogs can be trusted to oversee national security agencies that they’ve long defended. Intelligence Committee leaders from the House and Senate insist they’ve done their due diligence but acknowledge that lawmakers can glean only as much information as the president and his team will share. And even then, anything of such a highly classified nature can’t be legally disclosed anyway.” http://politi.co/1cnoEnV

IMMIGRATION HITS HOME FOR GOODLATTE – WaPo’s Pamela Constable in Roanoke, Va.: “As chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, a panel at the center of the national immigration debate, Rep. Bob Goodlatte (R-Va.) has taken a tough stance on illegal immigration that reflects the views of many House Republicans: better border security and law enforcement before other reforms, and “zero tolerance” for illegal immigrants in the future. But as the representative of the sprawling 6th Congressional District in southwest Virginia, the former immigration lawyer faces the sort of changing demographics that have transformed this conservative, rural region into a multinational mosaic — and that have put immigration reform at the top of the national agenda. Roanoke, Goodlatte’s home in the Blue Ridge Valley, has seen its Hispanic population soar by 280 percent since 2000, to 6 percent of 100,000 residents — the biggest leap of any jurisdiction in the state except the Washington suburbs. In Harrisonburg, a college town 100 miles north, Hispanics have reached 16 percent of 49,000 residents.” http://wapo.st/1hEmb7x

THE OSCARS: ‘12 YEARS A SLAVE’ TAKES BEST PICTURE – The AP’s Jake Coyle: “Perhaps atoning for past sins, Hollywood named the brutal, unshrinking historical drama ‘‘12 Years a Slave’’ best picture at the 86th annual Academy Awards. Steve McQueen’s slavery odyssey, based on Solomon Northup’s 1853 memoir, has been hailed as a landmark corrective to the movie industry’s virtual blindness to slavery, instead creating whiter tales like 1940 best-picture winner ‘’Gone With the Wind.’ ‘12 Years a Slave’ is the first best-picture winner directed by a black filmmaker. …

– “The starved stars of the Texas AIDS drama ‘’Dallas Buyers Club’ were feted: Matthew McConaughey for best actor and Jared Leto for best supporting actor. … Cate Blanchett took best actress for her fallen socialite in Woody Allen’s ‘Blue Jasmine,’ her second Oscar.” http://bo.st/NMxVKA

FRIDAY’S TRIVIA WINNER – Drew Thies was first to correctly answer that Pedro Pierluisi, resident commissioner of Puerto Rico, is the member of Congress who serves a four-year term. Many of you also answered that the vice president, as president of the Senate, also serves a four-year term, which technically is also correct.

TODAY’S TRIVIA – Ben Pietrzyk offers an Oscars-themed question: What Oscar-winning actor was Ronald Reagan’s best man when he married Nancy Davis in 1952? The first person to correctly answer gets a mention in the next day’s Huddle. Email me at swong@politico.com.

** After years of saying “wait until next year,” Congress finally has bipartisan legislation to repeal Medicare’s broken funding formula. This is the news seniors have been waiting for. But we’re not over the finish line yet. Congress must act by March 31st to avoid another costly temporary patch. Let’s pass H.R. 4015/S. 2000, scrap the broken SGR formula and fix Medicare once and for all! FixMedicareNow.org

Is Netanyahu Really Mad at His Brother Obama?

The United States and Iran have made a deal in reference to Iran’s development of nuclear technology and Israel’s King Netanyahu is distraught over the matter.  If we just examine the situation using the controlled information we are getting from the controlled media, it would seem like a good day for America, as it would seem we are finally starting to refuse Israeli rule in the United States.

I personally believe this whole thing is nothing more than yet another production designed to control and manipulate.  Ask yourself, what are the true interests of the United States in the Middle East?  I’m not talking about corporate interests, but rather those of we the people.

The Father of our Country, one George Washington, told us inexplicitly, “Stay out of foreign entanglements as they sap your wealth and strength for the interests of others.”

There has been a great awakening in these United States as the reality of the power hungry institution of Zion has been put front and center via the internet, and it has been shown that Israeli interests are the first interests in consideration when it comes to how the wealth and power of the United States will be implemented and apportioned.

The Israeli infiltrators within our borders and without have been making every effort to camouflage the Zionist elephant every American has found sitting in their living room, as Americans across the board are refusing to be the goyim that the Zionists have asserted that we are, thus this latest, all star studded, production wherein the United States appears to be pulling away from Israel and leaving them to their own devises when nothing could be further from the truth.

As previously mentioned, American interests in the Middle East should be nothing more than fair trade, designed to procure their resources for the enjoyment of our people.  But as this would not include Zionist empire building, it will not do.  Israel wants the might of the United States to be applied to the further conquest of the Middle East for Israel’s benefit, and the only way they can accomplish this, now that they have been found out, is to make it look like a conflict has developed that has nothing to do with them.

In Syria, we have now entered into an agreement with the Syrians that, if violated, will procure a war for the violation, and now the same with Iran and of course the Israelis are distancing themselves and condemning both actions as fool hardy.  Now all the Mossad has to do is accomplish a couple of false flags and, Shazzam, America is in conflict in the Middle East for violation of agreements that should never have been entered into, as the situations in both countries is none of our business and has nothing to do with our security and sovereignty.

And right in step, once the war starts, the Israelis will forgive us our ignorance and naiveté and step up as our ‘most important ally’ to receive the riches gained through war, while we Americans endure the death and deprivation in the fight for the further glorification of Zion.

Our country is falling apart at the seams, yet we are going to allow ourselves to be told that our interests lie in other countries?  This is a production, a scam, and the Israelis are onboard, 100%.  Don’t be fooled.  Obama is their puppet and has always been.  He is doing exactly as he is told, as the idea here is to make it look like World War III was started with the full approval and participation of the American people.

These are the same communists that they were yesterday and it is their aim to destroy our country and our people.  We must speak out and let these charlatans know that we see what they are doing.  We are not fooled and this insurgent government is not only acting in defiance of we the people, but also as our enemy.

May the Good Lord continue to shine the light on the underside of the rot called Zion, which by His grace has been overturned and exposed.

Netanyahu ‘promises’ Iran will not get nuclear weapons

Even as world powers’ talks with Iran continued on Thursday, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu made clear a “bad” agreement would not obligate Israel and promised that Iran would not get nuclear weapons.

“The Iranians deny our past and repeat their commitment to wipe the State of Israel off the map. This reminds us of the dark regimes of the past that plotted against us first and then against all of humanity,” he said to a gathering of local Jewish leaders.

Netanyahu said that the “true” Iran was not the one of propaganda films produced by Foreign Minister Javad Zarif smiling and speaking about a peaceful future, but rather that of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei calling Jews “rabid dogs.” Khamenei, at a rally in Iran on Wednesday, called Israel an “illegitimate regime” led by “untouchable rabid dogs.”

Netanyahu: Bad Iran Deal Could Leave Military Action As Only Option

Israel-iran

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday that the plan currently being formulated by world leaders to keep Iran from developing nuclear weapons will not be effective.

“This is a bad deal,” Netanyahu said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”

He said that global leaders should increase sanctions on Iran, not loosen them.

“I think, if you want a peaceful solution, as I do, then the right thing to do is ratchet up the sanctions,” he said. ”Iran is practically giving away nothing. It’s making a minor concession, which they can reverse in weeks, and you endanger the whole sanctions regime that took years to make.”

Netanyahu argued that an imperfect deal could backfire and force the U.S. and other to used the military option.

“If you do a bad deal, you may get to the point where your only option is a military option,” he said. “So a bad deal actually can lead you to exactly the place you don’t want to be.”

Netanyahu vows to stop Iran, even in defiance of the United States

Netanyahu vows to stop Iran, even in defiance of the United States
http://isbigbrotherwatchingyou.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/5c80a__gun_ban__p-89EKCgBk8MZdE.gif

Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed on Monday night to put a stop to Iran’s nuclear program by whatever means necessary — even in outright defiance of American objections — if neither sanctions, nor other international action, achieves that goal.

“There is no doubt about Iran’s intention — to destroy us,” Netanyahu said. “I won’t be reconciled to that.”

Asked in an interview whether, if reelected in January, he would “pledge that Iran won’t have a nuclear program by the end of your next term,” Netanyahu said simply, “Yes.”

When it was put to him that the US has opposed a unilateral Israeli resort to force, Netanyahu said President Barack Obama had stated that Israel has the right to defend itself as it sees fit, and that Israel dare not entrust its future to others, even to the United States. Israel’s prime ministers had ignored US disapproval in establishing the country in 1948 and preempting the Arab attack in the 1967 war, he noted.

Netanyahu was interviewed as part of an investigative TV report that traced Israel’s efforts over the past decade to thwart Iran’s march toward the bomb. The documentary, which included interviews with several serving and former top politicians and security chiefs, detailed sabotage, assassinations of scientists and other measures used by Israel — as reported in foreign publications — to slow the Iranian program. It described the 2007 air strike that destroyed Syria’s nuclear reactor as “a general rehearsal for an attack” on Iran.

Asked whether he believed Netanyahu had the guts to order a strike on Iran, the prime minister’s former national security adviser, Uzi Arad, said he had “no doubt.”

When it was put to Netanyahu himself that others believed he lacked the guts to order a strike, he replied, “I hope I won’t have to.”

A central theme of the program was the assertion that Netanyahu and his Defense Minister Ehud Barak had ordered the defense establishment in 2010 to elevate its state of readiness so that it would be capable of attacking Iran within hours if so required — “the closest Israel has come to attacking Iran,” according to the program — but that two top security chiefs flatly refused to do as they were told.

The order to raise the IDF state of readiness to what was codenamed “P Plus” was given by Netanyahu and Barak to then-chief of the General Staff Gabi Ashkenazi and Mossad chief Meir Dagan at a meeting in Jerusalem two years ago, the program said.

But Dagan, the program claimed, rejected it as “illegal,” noting that a full cabinet decision was required for such an order. And Ashkenazi, the program said, vehemently opposed the step because he considered it “a strategic mistake” and feared that implementing the order might lead to an unintended war.

Asked about these dramatic exchanges, Netanyahu did not respond directly, but he indicated that they were inaccurate. And he stressed that “ultimately, the responsibility (for such decisions) is the prime minister’s.” The chief of staff “has the right to make recommendations,” he said. But as prime minister, he would overrule such recommendations if necessary, he indicated.

Barak did not deny seeking to order the raised state of readiness, but he said it had proved impossible because Ashkenazi had not prepared a viable military option. Sources close to Ashkenazi told the program this was untrue.

Vowing that Israel “is ready to act” against Iran, Netanyahu said he was watching the Islamist regime “advancing step by step… toward producing nuclear bombs.” When the Jews were being murdered by the Nazis, they were unable to save themselves, he said. But he, as Israel’s prime minister, did have the capacity to protect the Jewish nation. “When we didn’t have a state, we begged others” to defend the Jews, he said. “Today, we’re not begging, we are preparing.”

A second major theme of the hour-long program featured withering criticism by former prime minister Ehud Olmert, who is considering making a political comeback ahead of January’s general elections, of the handling of the Iranian threat by Netanyahu and Barak. Olmert also blasted Netanyahu for damaging Israeli ties with the Obama administration.

Lambasting Netanyahu’s evident readiness to strike at Iran if all else fails, even in defiance of the United States, Olmert asked mockingly which planes, bombs and special technologies Israel would use — underlining the centrality of American military hardware to Israel’s military capacity. Without naming names, he wondered who Netanyahu would turn to “if something is missing” from the range of equipment needed for an attack or the re-supply needed to sustain one. “Would it be to the people in whose faces we’re spitting,” he wondered, “those who we’re trying to prevent being president of the United States?”

Olmert was reviving allegations that Netanyahu has sought to undermine the Obama presidency and encourage the challenge of Republican candidate Mitt Romney in Tuesday’s presidential elections.

Responding directly to Olmert’s comments, Netanyahu said such an approach could require Israel, unacceptably, to subcontract its destiny to others. “We’re supposed to say there’s nothing we can do?” he asked rhetorically, rejecting the notion. “If our backs are to the wall, we’ll do what’s necessary,” he said.

Earlier in the program, without relating to any specific incidents, Olmert had related to the dilemmas he had faced as prime minister when ordering operations designed to slow Iran’s march to the bomb. Implying but not stating that he had ordered assassinations of people involved in the Iranian nuclear program, he said “I asked myself questions” about such operations, but reminded himself of the imperative “to prevent Iran from developing the fuse that could end my children’s lives.”

The program, part of a documentary series called “Uvda” (Fact) on Israel’s Channel 2, traced Israel’s efforts to stop the Iranian bomb throughout the past decade.

In 2002, it said, then-prime minister Ariel Sharon had ordered Mossad chief Dagan to focus on the Iranian threat. A special Mossad unit was established and, via “dozens of intelligence operations,” information was gathered first on Iran’s reactor at Natanz and then on the clandestine facility at Qom.

Shown the proof, president George W. Bush assured Israel, “Don’t worry, they won’t have a nuclear weapon,” an aide to Sharon told the program.

But Israel, by 2007, had decided it needed to have its own “program for action,” Barak told the program. An Israeli document briefly shown on screen related to plans “to set the Iranians back by at least a few years” and noted, “Israel may have to strike…”

When the American National Intelligence Estimate in late 2007 asserted that Iran had frozen its nuclear weapons program, Israel was stunned, the program said. Its intelligence information conclusively proved that the NIE was wrong, former IDF military intelligence chief Amos Yadlin told the program. “There then followed” a series of assassinations, explosions and other setbacks in the Iranian program.

“A lot of things went wrong,” Olmert noted.

“Things blew up,” added Barak.

In 2008, when Bush visited Israel, Olmert said he showed the US president incontrovertible proof that Iran was seeking the bomb. From then on, Olmert said, the US and Israel agreed on open sharing of all relevant intelligence information, and to work together to thwart Iran.

There was one caveat, however, the program noted: Bush made it clear that he was “with you all the way,” so long as Israel did not resort to unilateral military action.

The program featured much sniping by Olmert at Barak, and vice versa, with each accusing the other of requiring more responsible supervision. Olmert said he would not want “the overall responsibility” for thwarting Iran to be in Barak’s hands. Barak said that “when it comes to using force,” Olmert “requires supervision.” Barak served as defense minister in the Olmert government until four years ago, continuing to hold the post in the current Netanyahu government.

The rebuffed call by Netanyahu and Barak for Ashkenazi and Dagan to get the military establishment ready for a possible strike within hours, the program said, brought Israel “closer than ever” to a strike. This section of the “Uvda” report was partially broadcast on Sunday night, prompting headlines in the Hebrew dailies on Monday.

Relating indirectly to the reported differences of opinion with his former security chiefs, Netanyahu said in his interview that he was “not eager for war” and hoped sanctions or other international action would thwart Iran.

Why Netanyahu Is So Enraged by a Deal with Iran

Secretary of State John Kerry’s last minute decision to make a surprise visit to Geneva, Switzerland, where negotiations between the P5+1 and Iran are rapidly progressing, led to an enormous amount of speculation that a first-step deal was imminent and may even be signed today.

Details of the first-phase deal are limited and speculative, but the broad contours are that Iran would halt its enrichment program (whatever that means) for 6 months in exchange for “very limited” and “reversible” sanctions relief. During that 6 months, a more comprehensive grand bargain would be hashed out, which would probably include Iran making the following concessions in return for greater sanctions relief: halting all production of 20% enriched uranium; converting much of its stockpile to fuel rods; and much greater access for international inspections.

To Iran hawks, that should sound like a damn good deal. Under those conditions of less enrichment and greater transparency, the prospect of an Iranian nuclear weapon would be transparently unfeasible.

Why, then, have the Iran hawks responded with outrage? Not only is Congress responding to this good news by ratcheting up additional sanctions in a clear attempt to derail negotiations and set us back on the war path, but Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nearly hyperventilated with fury over the diplomatic progress.

So a deal that would further handicap Iran’s ability to build nuclear weapons and enhance the international community’s ability to confirm through inspections that there is no diversion of enriched material to some covert program is “a bad deal” that would bury “the possibility of having a peaceful resolution”? What?

If you see this as irrational, you’re not alone. Here’s the Foreign Minister of Sweden tweeting about Bibi’s outburst:

Israel and hawks in Congress are upset because they believe anything less than total capitulation from Iran, total dismantling of their entire domestic enrichment program, is unacceptable. But Giora Eiland, a former Israeli national security adviser, reveals the actual reason this deal (any deal) with Iran enrages Netanyahu:

I can understand why Netanyahu is so furious. A unilateral military option would have no real chance now. Not because we can’t do it, but because it would be seen as moving against the whole international community. That is something Israel cannot afford.

Any deal with Iran, no matter how lopsided and favorable to the Western powers, would enshrine Iran’s limited enrichment program as legitimate in the eyes of the international community. From the Israeli perspective, that kind of disallows a rogue preventive strike on Iran, a privilege they want to preserve.

In other words, a deal with Iran means Israel can’t launch an illegal war. Ouch.

Israel"s Netanyahu says peace talks will be tough

(AP) — Israel’s prime minister says he expects recently announced peace talks with the Palestinians to be tough, and that any agreement reached would have to be ratified in a national Israeli referendum.

Benjamin Netanyahu spoke Sunday at his weekly Cabinet meeting, his first on-camera remarks since U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry announced the resumption of peace talks over the weekend — ending a five year deadlock.

Netanyahu said his main guiding principles will be to maintain a Jewish majority in Israel and to avoid a future Palestinian state becoming an Iranian-backed “terror state.”

Final status negotiations aim to reach a deal on the core issues of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, including borders, the fate of Palestinian refugees and security arrangements. The Palestinians say talks will be based on Israel’s pre-1967 borders.
