Gold, Silver Hit 4-Month Highs On Bullish Chart Postures

Kitco News
February 24, 2014

Gold and silver prices ended the U.S. day session solidly up and scored four-month highs Monday. The markets were boosted by slowly improving technical pictures. Gold saw increasing safe-haven demand amid geopolitical concerns. April gold was last up $ 14.30 at $ 1,337.90 an ounce. Spot gold was last quoted up $ 11.80 at $ 1,338.50. March Comex silver last traded up $ 0.283 at $ 22.065 an ounce.

The Ukrainian president was ousted over the weekend and is now in hiding and wanted for murder. The situation there remains very fluid. If violence escalates in Ukraine, much more risk aversion would enter the market place. The Ukrainian developments and some civil unrest and violence in Thailand are prompting increased safe-haven demand for gold.

There was a Group of 20 economic and finance ministers meeting in Sydney, Australia, during the weekend. The group laid out a plan for the major industrial economies to continue with their aggressive monetary stimulus plans, while at the same time called for the emerging countries to restructure their economies to contain inflation. The proclamation was mostly ignored by world markets. However, the confab’s declaration does hint that the major central banks of the world are going to be reluctant to cut back too much on their heretofore aggressive monetary policy easing measures.

Gold and Silver Derivatives in Chart Form: What Market Makers Have Controlling Interests?

Here are a few charts from Sharelynx Gold regarding precious metal derivative holdings. The charts are as September 30, the latest data available. Click on any chart for sharper image.

OCC Gold Derivatives All Maturities

OCC Silver, Palladium, Plagtinum Derivatives All Maturities

Aggregate Precious Metal Derivatives

Some will point to these charts as “proof” of manipulation. I suggest it is proof of “possible” manipulation.

Is there manipulation? Of course there is. But there is no evidence to prove it is in one direction only, or that central banks are behind it all, as some maintain.

For further discussion, please see Gold Manipulation: Is it Illegal? Risk Free? What About JP Morgan?

As always, views expressed regarding charts created by other, are mine.

Ezra Klein vs. Nate Silver: The Wonk Super Bowl

Ezra Klein and Nate Silver are pictured. | AP Photos

POLITICO provides a look at the two journalists and their differing projects. | AP Photos

Ezra Klein and Nate Silver have some things in common: They’re both smart, young, innovative and analytical journalists with devoted followings who, when offered the chance to launch their own ventures, left the nation’s leading newspapers to do so.

The similarities pretty much end there.

When Klein announced he would be departing The Washington Post for a new venture with Vox Media, it was heralded as just the latest example of a brand-name star outgrowing a legacy media institution. Klein’s name was immediately lumped in with the likes of Silver, who took his popular FiveThirtyEight blog from The New York Times to ESPN, and Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg, who moved their tech news vertical from The Wall Street Journal to NBC Universal.

But Ezra Klein is not Nate Silver, and Vox Media is not ESPN. And sweeping generalizations about the new wave of personal-brand journalism ignore the unique circumstances each of these journalists face when striking out on their own.

(Also on POLITICO: Why the Post passed on Ezra Klein)

The two men are friends and mutual fans — “Ezra and I have had several great conversations over the years. I consider him a friend, but I’m sure we’d hang out more often if we lived in the same city,” Silver told POLITICO. Silver, who came to political forecasting from baseball metrics, described himself as “a huge admirer of Ezra’s journalism.” Klein, who declined to comment for this piece, once praised Silver’s “innovations” as a journalist.

Here’s a look at the two and their differing projects:

The name

Klein, 29, and his wife, Annie Lowrey, of the Times, are, for a younger generation of Beltway insiders, Washington royalty. So when his intentions to leave the Post became known, it was all D.C. media types could talk about. And, to be sure, there was a devoted national following who knew Klein’s work — from the Post, from MSNBC, from Bloomberg View, or from his occasional New Yorker article — who were probably shocked to see a writer they loved leaving for a digital media company they’d probably never heard of. But outside those bubbles — what you might call Washington and greater Washington — few people cared.

(Also on POLITICO: Ezra Klein joins Vox Media)

Compare that with Silver, 36, who has become a household name in some quarters and is synonymous with the political forecasting industry. (Silver, who is gay — in 2012 he was named “Person of the Year” by Out Magazine — is not married.) In the 24 hours that followed the 2012 presidential election, sales of his book skyrocketed by 850-percent on Amazon.com. One week later, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that he was being courted by Tinseltown for “everything from box-office analysis to a correspondent gig on a television news program, not to mention radio shows and public speaking.” A week after that, President Obama dropped his name in a joke at the annual Thanksgiving turkey pardoning.

With his move to ESPN, a ratings giant, Silver’s star status only grows. He has and will continue to appear across the network’s programming. He’s been promised a role in the Oscars, which will air on ABC through at least 2020. Online, he will add to his reputation for political and sports forecasting by expanding into areas as diverse as economics, science, education and weather. (“I think people will be surprised at how small a percentage of our content is in the politics and policy realm. We’re still going to be forecasting elections,” he told POLITICO, “[b]ut politics might represent something like 20 or 25 percent of our total bandwidth.”)

The traffic

Klein was a big traffic-driver for the Post. In 2011, “Wonkblog” was the most-read blog on the paper’s website. In recent years, he’s generated what one Post staffer described to The New Republic as “enough traffic to end any argument with the senior editors.” (Sources put the number at well over 4 million pageviews a month, though that figure is disputed). Still, it’s a pittance compared to the numbers that Silver has put on the board. In the week before the 2012 presidential election, 71 percent of visitors to the Times’ politics section visited his “FiveThirtyEight” blog, according to The New Republic. On the day of the election, one-in-every-five readers on The Times site visited the blog. “What’s interesting is a lot of the traffic is coming just for Nate,” Jill Abramson, the executive editor of the Times, told TNR. (Neither Silver nor Klein will share their traffic numbers.)

(Also on POLITICO: 10 journalists to watch in 2014)

No matter how outsize one journalist becomes, he still benefits from his platform: Klein and Silver drove traffic to the Post and the Times, but the Post and the Times also drove traffic to Klein and Silver. At ESPN, Silver will be the beneficiary of a robust readership of sports fans. At Vox, Klein will largely be responsible for generating his own traffic. And it’s worth remembering that while Klein has many readers who follow him on Twitter and Facebook, there are others who will lose sight of him — much the way many of Frank Rich’s loyal readers stopped reading his columns when he jumped from the Times’ opinion pages to New York Magazine. (Still, it’s worth remembering that Klein is building an entirely new news venture — not just a larger version of Wonkblog — which means that past statistics aren’t necessarily the best indicator of future success.)

Tea Party Patriots See A Silver Lining In The Shutdown

The Affordable Care Act has been at the center of the budget debate that has shut down the government.

Tea Party Republicans in the House have led the charge to try to repeal or delay Obamacare in exchange for funding the government.

They were cheered for taking on the health law by tea party activists across the country, including Jenny Beth Martin, co-founder and national coordinator for Tea Party Patriots. Martin told Weekend Edition Saturday host Scott Simon recently that Congress ignored the will of the people when Obamacare was enacted.

“And still, the majority of Americans do not want to live under Obamacare,” Martin says. The shutdown is giving those people the chance to speak to Congress to ask that the law not be funded.

Interview Highlights

Didn’t Americans who opposed Obamacare have a chance to make their case against it when the legislation was being debated?

We worked to make that case, yet even though the majority of Americans did not want the law to pass, the Democrat-controled House and the Democrat-controled Senate went ahead and ignored the will of the people and passed the law anyway. And still, the majority of Americans do not want to live under Obamacare, and they are speaking up and they’re talking to their Congressmen and Senators and letting them know.

Polls are interesting, but what counts is elections and the vote in Congress.

You’re absolutely right that elections count, and votes in Congress count, and so the elections results from last year elected Republicans to control the House of Representatives. The Constitution gives Republicans the authority to initiate bills that fund the government and they’re acting absolutely within the scope of their power, within the rule of law, and they are doing that based on election results.

Those same elections returned this president to office.

Exactly, which is why we understand that we’re not going to be able to repeal the law right now, but we’ve seen repeatedly that this law is not ready for implementation. All we’re saying is don’t spend our tax money on this law that clearly isn’t ready … and that labor unions have said will destroy the 40-hour work week and shatter their employees’ health care.

Gold And Silver Market Says 1 -2 Years Sideways, Not Up

Gold and Silver Warning! FREE REPORT

Commodities / Gold and Silver 2013
Sep 01, 2013 – 05:18 PM GMT

By: Michael_Noonan

Commodities

Re 1 – 2 years of potentially moving sideways, we would be happy to be wrong.

In a week of no news relevant to gold and silver, gold slipped under the 1400 level, for some “unknown” reason, while silver just slipped a little. Friday marked the close of the week and month, for charting purposes. A look at the Quarterly, in progress, seemed a good idea, as well.

Almost everyone has an opinion on any given market, but especially for gold, with the exception of financial news networks which never have an opinion on gold, unless it is to point out how poorly it is doing. Opinions, however, do not move markets, only executed trades matter, a topic covered a few weeks ago, [Only Votes Cast In Elections Count, Same For Markets, http://bit.ly/15mjhKP, if you missed it.]

The only opinion that matters is what the market is saying about those who are actually participating, and that shows up as fact when viewed on the charts. Opinion, sentiment, belief, expectation, none lead the market but are more reflective of one’s mindset, and in the end, it is the market that always has the last word. From our perspective, it is better to follow the market’s lead.If you have a consistent game plan, profitable results will follow.

A shorter version of the above is simply, do not fight the tape!

[We just saw that a part of the chart comments was cut off. It pertained to dealing with patterns that consistently repeat in behavior, and they act as a reliable guide for making trade decisions, re first paragraph on chart.]

Stand-out wide range bars tend to capture market behavior for the next several time periods, so for a Quarterly, it can be a few years. In the 2011 wide range bar, gold traded sideways for 6 more quarters, before being “driven” lower. The 2nd Q bar, second from the end, is almost equal in size to the range that formed the high. Using past history of how price responds, it is likely that gold, [and silver], will move sideways for another year or two. This flies in the face of so many current, mostly expert opinions.

As noted on the chart, only some highly unexpected news event could “shock” price out of normal pattern behavior, which is what it would take to get the price of gold and silver to move higher, in line with “expectations” of the PMs community. A collapse of the fiat Federal Reserve Note would be such a catalyst example. There is history for that kind of event, taken from the Federal Reserve’s model, the Weimar Republic banking system from Germany, which ultimately went wildly amok from its infinite printing binge. Still, it took some time for it to unravel, as it is for today’s criminal bankers gone wild.

Given that the New World Order’s central bankers have a stronghold, literally, on the Western banking system, that power will not easily be ceded, and that faction will destroy currencies in the process before ever acknowledging their [historically proven to be] doomed policies are not working…except in transferring the Western world’s wealth into their greedy hands. On that score, things are working beautifully, if you happen to be a part of the NWO.

The two most important bars are April, 5 bars ago, and June, 3 bars ago. Both are wide range bars lower when JPMorgan made its [illegal] naked short selling takedown attempts to suppress that central banker nemesis. While relatively high, volume for June was the lowest of all 2013 months. It is the market’s way of showing us that sellers were less in number. Even though June’s close was weak, there was no further follow through to the downside. In fact, July and August just erased the central bank effort from June.

An August close over the June high would have been a more bullish statement, but it takes time to turn a trend, and these two higher time frames suggest it will take more time to get gold higher, as in above 1600.

It is most pertinent to let first impressions develop into more considered thought for they tend to be the most reliable. The upside rally in gold seems to be legitimate in viewing the activity as a possible bottom, but that needs more time to be confirmed. Once the weekly close posted on the lower end, it gave rise to expect the potential of additional downside. The two high volume bars from the end of May made their presence more clearly.

Volume shows the effort extended, and for these two weeks the effort was much higher than recent showings. It is the result that give importance to the effort. The result, after two weeks of buying, [higher closes], was opposite, and it was cued by the poor closings, especially on the higher volume 2nd of the two bars. Sellers were stronger, and it becomes so vividly apparent in understanding why last week failed to extend higher. It will take time for buyers to successfully absorb the effort of sellers primarily from the end of May.

The higher time frames give color to reading the daily. The ability for gold to rally from recent lows has been positive. The more negative trend aspects from the higher time frames act as a reminder that it will take more time and effort to succeed in overcoming prevailing seller efforts.

The message is presented as mixed due to the positive manner in which the market has unfolded since the end of June. Price continues to hold the up-sloping trend line, but the poor location of the close tells us its breach may occur, and that event would be a part of normal activity, even in an up trend. Yet, the lower box, just under last week, shows the potential for support that could buffer any possible decline.

The higher time frames are a reminder to be very select when approaching gold from the long side. We remain long.

Silver was identified in several previous commentaries as being closer to support than gold, while gold has an overall stronger chart. We continue to adhere to that notion.

Silver was also designated as more compelling than gold, even back in early July, [see: It Is Silver Sending A Message, click on http://bit.ly/10EW8FO]. Unlike gold, August’s strong rally close not only obliterated June’s high, it challenged May’s high, at the same time. The so-called lesser metal is making a better showing, currently.

Observations lead to perceptions on what developing market activity may be signaling. Taking note of the protracted trading range, as everyone who follows gold and silver is keenly aware, a trading range formation is akin to a stored energy build-up from which price will more directionally. Here, price broke to the downside, but there has been very little further progress. In fact, the upside reaction from the lows has been impressive.

Last week’s poor close may lead to more downside, but there are no signs of supply coming onto the market that will deter this currently developing rally.

The highest volume occurred on Thursday, but the close was in the upper half of the bar. Actually, when reviewing the daily chart activity, we did not keep in mind the rollover from Sep into Dec, so that discussion is scratched.

Price did stop on high volume, irrespective of any rollover activity, and silver has retraced back to the previous box trading range, and that may act as a buffer against further declines.

One can attribute activity to the Syria situation, where the Nobel Peace Prize winner who is solely leading the charge to attack that nation, despite world-wide opinion coming to a different conclusion as to who was responsible for any purported chemical attack, but by simply following the developing market activity, forming outside “opinions” is not needed.

The where price stops and how, next week, will give additional information on how to be handling this market. We remain long.

5 Ways the Value of a Silver Dollar is Determined

1. Mint Mark – If you are trying to determine the worth of a silver dollar, one place to start is the mint mark. A mint mark is a tony letter that is printed on the coin which identifies the mint that created the coin. These marks can be very common or quite rare and a coin that has a rare mint mark might be highly valuable.

2. The Year of Mint – Another important factor in determining the value of a coin is the year that it was minted. There were years where fewer silver dollars were minted making them more rare and therefore giving them a higher value because they are harder to find.

3. Coin Design- How much is a silver dollar worth? It depends on the design that was used when the coin was minted. Some silver dollar designs are considered more valuable. Morgan and Peace silver dollars were both designs used at some point during 1921, but the Peace design is worth at least 4 times what the Morgan design is valued at.

4. Number Available- The number of coins available for a specific silver dollar is a factor that will determine the value of the coin. Rare coins are valued much higher because these are sought after by collectors who are willing to pay a premium to own one of the few coins that can be purchased. Coins that are available in high numbers and are considered common will not demand a high price because these are not hard to obtain.

5. Coin Condition- How much is a silver dollar worth? The exact condition of the coin will be a determining factor. Coins that are in excellent condition will still have most or all of the design details, with few if any rub marks or damage. If there is excessive wear or the design is barely visible then this will lower the value of the coin.

Will Gold Always Hold It\"s Value? Just Look To The Past

While gold may not have the same highs as some stock investments, it very rarely ever takes massive falls and it\’s certainly had a good rate of growth over the last twenty years.

As many of the usual chemicals used to dissolve metals don\’t work on gold, it is easy to work out whether gold is real or not – the so called \”acid test\”.

While we no longer use the gold standard (meaning that an economic unit is worth a certain amount of gold), gold is still stockpiled by banks today.

Today\’s uses for gold include a wide range of applications such as electronics, decoration in the form of embroidery, food (think gold leaf), car manufacturing and chemistry.

The paper money you carry in your pocket essentially has no value other than the one we all agree to give it.

What a country\’s printed money is valued at by its trading partners can be reduced seriously in times of economic uncertainty.

On the other hand, in times like this gold becomes a stable base and a solid investment.

So buying gold online is simply a matter of finding a broker, and there are plenty out there. Next tell them how much you\’d like to buy.

In the absence of confidence in a country or currency, gold becomes the standard and stabilizing force.

Ancient man was right to think that gold was an \”ever lasting\” material. Pieces that we dig up from under the grounds or find in elaborate tombs are still stunning thousands of years later.

Gold is not so popular as it once was – we tend to be more interested in other precious metals these days, such as platinum, but it still has industrial uses within the modern world.

Even though we may not value it today so much for its beauty, we certainly understood its monetary value, and that\’s why it is still popular to trade gold.

A significant currency fall ultimately sees the price of imports rise and the buying power of the average person decline which can lead to inflation ultimately as people require more money to buy staples.

Gold remains as important to our culture today as it did a millennia ago when the Roman Empire were the rulers of their entire known world.

If taken care of it will certainly last a long time, possibly forever!

As has happened many times in the past, when a country goes bankrupt or badly devalues its currency, it needs to begin acquiring gold to recreate an underlying value to its paper money.

One huge change in society today is that if you work hard and save your money, you can buy and trade gold to your heart\’s content.

Gold is not so popular as it once was – we tend to be more interested in other precious metals these days, such as platinum, but it still has industrial uses within the modern world.

Certainly because practically everyone can get their hands on gold, or gold leaf, it is not considered quite so rare these days.

Hidden Treasures: Valuable Coins That Are Still In Circulation

Many coins worth money are still currently in circulation, and some of these may be very valuable. Most people do not look at the change received, and many turn around and spend these coins without ever truly examining them. This can be a very costly mistake. Most people assume that any valuable coins worth collecting have already been taken out of circulation but this is not always the case. Some highly desired coins were minted in the last 10-20 years, and these may still be circulating through the financial systems and consumers.

Collectors and consumers should always check change before spending it. You may have a coin worth hundreds of dollars in your pocket right now without even knowing it. Businesses often receive these coins as payment and don\’t realize that their value may be much higher than the face value of the coin. These coins are often passed along to the next customer without the business every having any idea.

There are many coins worth money that will never be found in circulation due to the age of the coin or the rarity and high numismatic value of the coin. Some of the newest collector coins may be found in circulation and a smart individual may find them. Many homes also have change jars and coin collections that are just a hobby. These coins should be closely examined to ensure that there are no rare or valuable coins in the pile.

You may be able to make more money this way than you might expect. For example, a 1982 \”no P\” dime may be worth $100 or more. These dimes were minted without the P mint mark just 30 years ago, so it is likely that there are still some in circulation. The 1955 Double Die penny is even more valuable. This coin could make you $300 all the way up to $25000!

There are more coins worth money in circulation than most people think. Spending coins without looking at them and determining their true value can be a costly mistake, and it is one that can be easily avoided. Always check the change that you spend and receive. You may be surprised at what you find.
