Russia-Ukraine Agree “Truce” Until March 21st; White House Warns Putin Stop Playing “Russian Roulette”

Embedded image permalinkZero Hedge – by Tyler Durden

“President Putin has started a game of Russian roulette and I think the United States and the West have to be very clear in their response,” states Sen. Foreign Relations Committed Chair Robert Menendez among a slew of Sunday morning talk-show rhetoric from US politicians with the White House’s Dan Pfeiffer adding “President Putin has a choice about what he’s going to do here. Is he going to continue to further isolate himself, further hurt his economy, further diminish Russian influence in the world, or is he going to do the right thing?” As the “sham referendum” continues, Reuters, however, reports that Ukraine’s acting defense minister believes Russia and Ukraine have agree a truce until March 21st.

If Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t back down in Crimea, he will face penalties from the West that will hurt the Russian economy and diminish Moscow’s influence in the world, the White House said Sunday.

White House senior adviser Dan Pfeiffer said the Obama administration’s top priority is supporting the new Ukrainian government “in every way possible.” He also said the United States would not recognize the results of a referendum taking place in Crimea Sunday on whether it should become part of Russia.

Pfeiffer said everything that Russia has done in Crimea has been a violation of international law and bad for stability in the region.

“President Putin has a choice about what he’s going to do here. Is he going to continue to further isolate himself, further hurt his economy, further diminish Russian influence in the world, or is he going to do the right thing?” Pfeiffer said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

…

“President Putin has started a game of Russian roulette and I think the United States and the West have to be very clear in their response because he will calculate about how far he can go,” said Sen. Robert Menendez, the Democratic chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

Menendez appeared on Fox News Sunday along with the ranking Republican on the Foreign Relations Committee, Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee. Corker said the U.S. and Europe were entering a “defining moment” in their relationship with Russia.

“Putin will continue to do this. He did it in Georgia a few years ago. He’s moved into Crimea and he will move into other places unless we show that long-term resolve.”

Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy of Connecticut returned early Sunday from meetings in Ukraine. He called an annexation vote taking place in Crimea a “sham referendum.” He said that Ukrainians he talked to, both inside the government and outside, said war could occur if Russia attempts to annex more territory. They indicated that “If Russia really does decide to move beyond Crimea it’s going to be bloody and the fight may be long,” he said on ABC’s “This Week.”

But it appears truce has been reached for now…

The defense ministries of Ukraine and Russia have agreed on a truce in Crimea until March 21, Ukraine’s acting defense minister said on Sunday.

“An agreement has been reached with (Russia’s) Black Sea Fleet and the Russian Defense Ministry on a truce in Crimea until March 21,” Ihor Tenyukh told journalists on the sidelines of a cabinet meeting.

“No measures will be taken against our military facilities in Crimea during that time. Our military sites are therefore proceeding with a replenishment of reserves.“

As Ukrainian armed forces appear resigned to the loss:

No confirmation as yet from the Russian authorities… which, it would appear, merely gives Putin more time to arrange his military pieces since for sure he shows no signs of backing down… as the tanks keep rolling

Crimea Votes Overwhelmingly to Rejoin Russia; Truce Until March 21; Goodbye Hryvnia, Hello Ruble; McCain Wants Military Aid for Ukraine

Crimea returns to Russia It’s a done deal. Nothing can be done about it. An Exit poll shows Crimeans Choose to Join Russia in Vote

A majority of Crimeans chose to join Russia in a disputed referendum, exit polls showed, deepening the worst crisis between Russia and the West since the end of the Cold War.

A total of 93 percent voted today in favor of leaving Ukraine to become part of Russia, the Republican Institute of Social and Political Studies said, citing exit polls from the vote in the Black Sea peninsula. The Ukrainian government, the European Union and the U.S. all consider the referendum illegal. About 1.5 million Crimean voters were eligible to take part, according to the region’s prime minister.

Goodbye Hryvnia, Hello Ruble

Crimea will switch to the Russian ruble and abandon Ukraine’s hryvnia on April 1, RIA Novosti cited Crimean Deputy Prime Minister Rustam Temirgaliev as saying today.

McCain Wants Military Aid for Ukraine

The US senate’s head-warmonger, John McCain said Obama is giving “serious consideration” to sending military aid to Ukraine. Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy, in an ABC interview, said the U.S. should pass “crippling sanctions” on Russia and help Ukraine rebuild its armed forces.

Biden Promote US as World’s Policeman

U.S. Vice President Joe Biden will travel to NATO members Poland and Lithuania tomorrow for talks on Ukraine, according to a White House statement. The Pentagon said last week it would send 12 F-16 aircraft to Poland as a sign of U.S. commitment to defend allies in the region; the U.S. previously sent six fighter jets to Lithuania.

Do US citizens support wasting tax dollars sending Aircraft to Poland? Of course not. Does McCain or the Republicans care about balancing the budget? Of course not?

Did Obama take down Guantanamo Bay, get all US troops out of Afghanistan or Iraq? Of course not.

Support for war, spying, and for the US to waste money being the world’s policeman is rampant in Congress, deficits be damned. But hey, don’t worry Ukraine and Russia Agree to a 5-Day Truce.

Taliban calls for truce in Pakistan on day polio workers are attacked

The Pakistan Taliban has announced a month-long ceasefire in order to try and revive stalled peace talks after reportedly being told the government would not mount operations against it. It came as at least 12 people were killed in an attack on polio workers.

A Taliban spokesman said the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had made clear that it would not be targeted in military operations. There has been mounting speculation Pakistan’s army was poised to launch a major operation in North Waziristan after a series of air raids on militant targets.

“The senior leadership of the Taliban advises all subgroups to respect the Taliban’s call for a ceasefire and abide by it and completely refrain from all jihadi activities in this time period,” spokesman Shahidullah Shahid said in a statement, according to the Reuters news agency.

Rebels agree truce in Syrian town

Paul Adams explains the challenges of removing Syria’s chemical weapons

Two Syrian rebel groups in the town of Azaz have agreed a ceasefire.

The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (Isis), linked to al-Qaeda, seized the northern town on Wednesday from the larger Western-backed Free Syrian Army.

The fighting has raised fears of a possible war within a war.

The clashes come ahead of one-week deadline for Syria to provide a list of its chemical weapons facilities, as part of a US-Russian deal for the country to destroy its deadly arsenal.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Sergei Ryabkov, is holding talks in Damascus over the deal.

US Secretary of State John Kerry said a “definitive” UN report had proved that the Syrian government was behind a deadly chemical weapons attack in the Damascus suburbs of Ghouta on 21 August.

Damascus – backed by Moscow – insists that rebel forces carried out the attack.

The West wants the deal on ridding the Syrian government of its chemical arsenal enshrined in a UN resolution backed by the threat of military force.

Mr Kerry said the UN Security Council must be willing to act on this when the UN General Assembly holds its annual meeting in New York next week.

But Russia objects to any mention of the threat of force in a UN resolution.

Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad, in an interview with Fox News, said it could take about a year to destroy Syria’s chemical stockpiles and could cost about $ 1bn (£623m).

Impact unclear

The BBC’s Paul Wood, on the Syrian border with Turkey, says that under the ceasefire deal, two rebel sides have agreed to exchange prisoners and hand back property.

It is unclear if the ceasefire will have an impact on clashes between the groups elsewhere in the country, he says.

Analysts say there is more chance that the US and other Western powers may arm the Free Syrian Army if it shows a distinct separation from the Islamists.

Meanwhile, the party of Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister Qadri Jamil insists he was misquoted in Friday’s edition of the UK’s Guardian newspaper.

Mr Jamil reportedly told the paper that the civil war had reached stalemate, with neither government forces nor the rebels strong enough to win – and that the government would use proposed talks in Geneva to call for a ceasefire.

But the People’s Will Party said the Guardian journalist was ”neither precise nor professional” about what he quoted Mr Jamil as saying.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said Tehran is ready to help broker peace in Syria, as part of what he called his country’s “constructive engagement” policy with other nations.

In an article in the Washington Post newspaper, Mr Rouhani wrote: “We must create an atmosphere where peoples of the region can decide their own fates.”

Correspondents say the article is the latest signal that Mr Rouhani wants to improve Iran’s relationship with the US and other countries that believe Iran is developing nuclear weapons.

Islamic laws

The fighting in Azaz began when a wounded rebel – either from Isis or from an allied group, al-Muhajireen – was taken to a field clinic and, while there, filmed as part of a fundraising exercise.

The wounded fighter demanded the film, and called some of his friends to come and help him.

Free Syrian Army fighters, from a unit called the Northern Storm brigade, were guarding the field clinic, and there was a confrontation which ended up with Isis launching a full attack on the town, putting the Northern Storm brigade to flight.

Isis is reported to have made a number of arrests of activists, journalists and even Sharia court officials during the time it controlled Azaz.

One eyewitness inside the town said no-one was smoking on the streets – tobacco is forbidden according to strict Islamist doctrine.

Obama marking 60th anniversary of Korean war truce

(AP) — President Barack Obama is marking the 60th anniversary of the end of the Korean War.

Obama is delivering remarks Saturday at a commemorative ceremony at the Korean War Veterans Memorial on the National Mall.

The 1950-1953 Korean war pitted North Korean and Chinese troops against U.S.-led United Nations and South Korean forces. It ended on July 27, 1953 — 60 years ago Saturday — with the signing of an armistice.

But a formal peace treaty was never signed, leaving the Korean Peninsula in a technical state of war and divided at the 38th parallel between its communist north and democratic south.

At least 2.5 million people were killed in the fighting.

In a proclamation declaring Saturday as National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day, Obama says the anniversary marks the end of the war and the beginning of a long and prosperous peace.

In the six decades since the end of hostilities, Obama said, South Korea has become a close U.S. ally and one of the world’s largest economies.

He said the partnership remains “a bedrock of stability” throughout the Pacific region, and gave credit to the U.S. service members who fought all those years ago and to the men and women currently stationed there.
