Bill Maher Presses Maddow On Christie Coverage: "It"s Not Watergate" (VIDEO)

Bill Maher may have broken up with MSNBC, but he’s still paying close attention to just how much coverage the network gives to New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R).

Maher brought MSNBC host Rachel Maddow onto his HBO show Friday night and pressed her to explain why the network gives so much airtime to the scandal surrounding the Christie administration’s involvement in closing lanes on the George Washington Bridge.

“I am totally obsessed with the Christie story, unapologetically,” Maddow said, comparing it to her past coverage of disgraced former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Maher wrote in what he called a earlier this month that he was going to “start seeing other news organizations” in protest of the network’s wall-to-wall coverage of Christie. He added that MSNBC had become like Fox News and that the so-called Bridgegate scandal had become the network’s version of Benghazi.

“I should have said that, yes, this is not the same as Benghazi,” Maher said. “I made that analogy, I said ‘This is your Benghazi.’ Benghazi is nothing. There is no scandal there. This is an actual scandal. It’s just that it’s not Watergate.”

“When there are gonzo political corruption stories, you cover them,” Maddow responded. “The most interesting thing about the Christie one is that we still don’t know what happened. It’s still not resolved. We still don’t have an explanation.”

National Review writer Charles C.W. Cooke ventured another theory about why MSNBC has hammered Christie in recent weeks: to “get rid of Chris Christie” from the 2016 presidential field.

“So you think that I’ve created the bridge story out of whole cloth in order to elect a Democrat in 2016?” Maddow asked with a mocking laugh, concluding that the bridge scandal was simply “an ongoing story worth covering.”

There"s Already 17 Times More Coverage on Chris Christie Scandal Than in Last Six Months of IRS Scandal

NewsBusters.org:

In less than 24 hours, the big three networks have devoted 17 times more coverage to a traffic scandal involving Chris Christie than they’ve allowed in the last six months to Barack Obama’s Internal Revenue Service controversy. Since the story broke on Wednesday that aides to the New Jersey governor punished a local mayor’s lack of endorsement with a massive traffic jam, ABC, CBS and NBC have responded with 34 minutes and 28 seconds of coverage. Since July 1, these same networks managed a scant two minutes and eight seconds for the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups.

In contrast, journalists such as Good Morning America’s George Stephanopoulos pounced on the developing Christie story. The GMA host opened the program on Thursday by announcing, “Chris Christie in crisis. Calls at this hour for the feds to step in, investigate the explosive e-mails.”

Stephanopoulos later wondered, “One of the big questions right now, how much has it hampered his White House prospects?” Guest Matt Dowd insisted that, on a scale from one to ten, the controversy was already at a “four or five.”

On the CBS Evening News, anchor Scott Pelley sounded a similar alarm: “Tonight, a potential presidential candidate caught up in scandal. E-mails show massive New Jersey traffic jams were engineered by aides to Governor Chris Christie as political payback.”

NBC Nightly News host Brian Williams immediately spun the story as a political pitfall for the possible presidential contender: “In a jam. A big problem for a man with big ambitions. Tonight, how a traffic nightmare on the world’s busiest bridge has spilled into a full blown scandal with the power to damage Chris Christie’s political future.”

NBC and ABC Bash Reagan as Pro-Apartheid During Mandela Coverage

Amid the tributes looking back at the life of former South African President Nelson Mandela following his death on Thursday, Friday’s NBC Today and ABC’s Good Morning America both managed to take shots at Ronald Reagan for not being supportive of Mandela during Apartheid. [Listen to the audio]

On Today, chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell proclaimed: “The U.S. wasn’t always on Mandela’s side. In the 1980s, President Reagan supported the Apartheid regime, a cold war ally, even as protests broke out on college campuses across America demanding that the U.S. punish the regime….Finally, Congress, including key Republicans, overrode Reagan’s veto, imposing the economic sanctions that helped break the Apartheid regime.”

On Good Morning America, human rights attorney Gay McDougall took a similar jab at Reagan: “Americans took a stand against Apartheid and said no to our government, when Ronald Reagan wanted to solidify, you know, U.S. support for Apartheid. We said no, we said sanctions, and we played an important role.”

Mitchell and McDougall both failed to describe the full context of Reagan not backing Mandela. In a Thursday article examining the complexity of Mandela’s legacy, Brietbart’s Joel Pollak, originally from South Africa, explained:

The ANC [African National Congress] remained banned in the country [South Africa], but its military wing continued to operate within Southern Africa, with assistance from the Soviet Union. The decision to align with the Soviet Union would later haunt the ANC, as it alienated the United States and Great Britain, which were otherwise inclined to support the anti-apartheid movement (and did so, albeit in limited fashion). While Mandela was in prison, the Soviet-trained leaders of the ANC’s army committed human rights abuses in military camps outside the country, and used terror attacks on civilians inside South Africa.

Pollak elaborated during an appearance on Mark Levin’s radio show that evening.

Prior to reciting the anti-Reagan talking points, Mitchell’s Today report began with her gushing over how Mandela influenced President Obama:

MITCHELL: Nelson Mandela transformed his nation and the world. A freedom fighter with the grace and courage to forgive his oppressors, inspiring generations of civil rights leaders and a young Barack Obama, who recalled a rally on his own college campus.

BARACK OBAMA: My very first political action. The first thing I ever did that involved an issue or a policy or politics was a protest against Apartheid.

MITCHELL: As a senator, Obama had visited Mandela. And the President and Mrs. Obama brought their daughters to Robin Island Prison so they could better understand what Mandela had suffered. After he died, Michelle Obama tweeted, “We will forever draw strength and inspiration from Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary example of moral courage, kindness, and humility.”

Here is a full transcript of Mitchell’s December 6 report:

8:03AM ET

SAVANNAH GUTHRIE: Let’s go to NBC’s Andrea Mitchell. She’s been following the outpouring of tributes pouring in all around the world. Andrea, good morning to you.

[ON-SCREEN HEADLINE: Remembering Nelson Mandela; World Leaders Pay Tribute to Fmr. Leader]

ANDREA MITCHELL: Good morning, Savannah. Nelson Mandela is indeed being mourned around the world and here at home by the Americans whose lives he influenced, starting with the President of the United States.

Nelson Mandela transformed his nation and the world.

Bill Clinton tweeted a picture and wrote, “I will never forget my friend Madiba,” using the affectionate name by which Mandela was known to his followers.

But the U.S. wasn’t always on Mandela’s side. In the 1980s, President Reagan supported the Apartheid regime, a cold war ally, even as protests broke out on college campuses across America demanding that the U.S. punish the regime.

[SONG PLAYING: "Free Nelson Mandela"]

“Free Nelson Mandela” became a popular anthem for black and white Americans. Finally, Congress, including key Republicans, overrode Reagan’s veto, imposing the economic sanctions that helped break the Apartheid regime. That set the stage for Mandela’s triumphant visit to Washington as his country’s president.

NELSON MANDELA: We are to one another brother and sister. A united rainbow nation that derives its strength from the bonding of its many races and colors.

MITCHELL: Bono, Mandela’s great friend, wrote, “In the end, Nelson Mandela showed us how to love rather than hate. Not because he had never surrendered to rage or violence, but because he learned that love would do a better job.” Savannah.

GUTHRIE: Well chosen words. Andrea, thank you so much.

House OKs coverage plans short of Obamacare rules

Thomas Bishop: SNAP Cuts Disappear From Network Sunday Show Coverage

The four major network Sunday news programs failed to report on the newly enacted decrease in food stamp benefits, which affects more than 47 million Americans.

On November 1, USDA reported that “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients will see their monthly benefits decrease” after the expiration of benefit increases enacted in the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  But Fox News Sunday, NBC’s Meet The Press, ABC’s This Week, and CBS’ Face the Nation all failed to bring up the issue on the November 3 editions of their respective shows.

Writing at Salon, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich explained: ”As of November 1 more than 47 million Americans have lost some or all of their food stamp benefits.” He added that “Half of all children get food stamps at some point during their childhood.” CBS News reported that the SNAP benefit cuts would shrink benefits for a family of four by as much as ”$ 432 over the course of a year.” The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) highlighted how SNAP benefit cuts would affect hundreds of thousands of veterans:

Many veterans returning from service face challenges in finding work.  While the overall unemployment rate for veterans is lower than the national average, the unemployment rate for recent veterans (serving in September 2001 to the present) remains high, at 10.1 percent in September 2013.  About one-quarter of recent veterans reported service-connected disabilities in 2011, which can impact their ability to provide for their families:  households with a veteran with a disability that prevents them from working are about twice as likely to lack access to adequate food than households without a disabled member.

Veterans who participate in SNAP tend to be young, but their ages range widely:  57 percent of the veterans in our analysis are under age 30, while 9 percent are aged 60 or older.  They served during many conflicts, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Vietnam, and in some cases, Korea and World War II, as well as in peacetime.

The media continues to ignore food stamp cuts that affect millions of Americans and negatively impact the economy.

Need health care coverage? Just dial 1-800-F**KYO

Katie McHugh
Daily Caller
Oct. 3, 2013

One of the numbers to reach Obama

One of the numbers to reach Obama’s new health exchange is 1-800-3(F) 8(U) 2(C) 5(K) 9(Y) 6(O).

Need health insurance? The Obama administration has you covered. Simply dial 1-800-FUCKYO to reach the next available health-care provider.

Far from being a mistype, that’s the official number that Health and Human Services wants Americans to dial when seeking health care. Obamacare’s national call center really did list its number as 1-800-318-2596, helpfully spelling out President Barack Obama’s tendency to blatantly flip the bird in plain view.

After allowing for the lack of letters attached to 1 on a traditional American telephone keypad, the number spells out a clear message. For every duped voter, every young invincible weighing the cost of a penalty versus a newly tripled yearly deductible, every ailing old granny in a wheelchair (whom, remember, Paul Ryan wants to push off a cliff) who needs adequate and affordable health care, Obama’s message is:

1-800-3(F) 8(U) 2(C) 5(K) 9(Y) 6(O).
