Paul Ryan still trying to convince us he doesn"t have "a racist bone in my body"

Rep. Paul Ryan at CPAC 2014.
Rep. Paul Ryan. Bones non-racist. Words … different story.

Rep. Paul Ryan continues to self-righteously push back against his racist dog whistles having been recognized for what they are. “I don’t have a racist bone in my body,” he told Bill O’Reilly. (Probably not! But then, racism tends to be carried more in the brain than the bones.) In case you find yourself in danger of being convinced by Ryan’s simplistic assertions that, whatever he may have said, he just isn’t racist, David Corn has rounded up a few examples from Ryan’s history of blowing that particular dog whistle.

There’s the time when, speaking to an audience of Ayn Rand acolytes, Ryan’s solution to “the victimization class” was “trying to recruit a lot of minority legislators to work with us.” That makes pretty clear who he thinks “the victimization class” is. Most crucially, Ryan’s recent finger-pointing at inner-city (read: black) culture is nothing new. In 2012, for instance, he said:

… the best thing to help prevent violent crime in the inner cities is to bring opportunity in the inner cities, is to help people get out of poverty in the inner cities, is to help teach people good discipline, good character.

Please read below the fold for more on this story.

Mark Levin: Republican Nominee In 2016 Doesn"t Need "Executive Experience"

MARK LEVIN: Lincoln is considered our greatest, if not our second greatest president by most. He was never a governor. He was never a senator. He was an extraordinary man, and he was a public man, and people knew much about him. The Lincoln-Douglas debates — and those weren’t the only debates! He gave some magnificent speeches too. But again, all that aside. My point is to categorize and say we have to have a person who’s served as governor because they make executive decisions. Okay great.

And that’ll be the strength of that candidate, should that candidate run. But thats not the test. The test is to get the right person. And the right person will make mostly the right decisions. Take a measure of the person. So if you have somebody who has been a governor, or just a garden variety Republican. Whether they’re a big-government Republican or a RINO. I don’t care if they’ve been a governor or not. I’m not interested. They have to come to the office or seek the office with a certain set of a principles and value that we share. Someone who is intelligent, confident, and articulate and knowledgeable, and has a capacity for the office. They’ve been governor, great. If they haven’t, fine.

Putin "Doesn"t Believe In You," McCain Tells Russian People

In a stinging response to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s put-down of “American exceptionalism,” Arizona Sen. John McCain told Russians Thursday that Putin “doesn’t believe in you.”

“He doesn’t believe that human nature at liberty can rise above its weaknesses and build just, peaceful, prosperous societies,” McCain writes in an op-ed posted by Pravda. “Or, at least, he doesn’t believe Russians can. So he rules by using those weaknesses, by corruption, repression and violence. He rules for himself, not you.”

McCain, the 2008 Republican presidential nominee, is answering Putin’s Sept. 11 op-end in The New York Times.

In that piece, as we reported, Putin “made an unusual and direct appeal to the American people … to reject President Obama’s calls for possible use of force against Syria.”

The Russian leader ended his message with this statement:

“My working and personal relationship with President Obama is marked by growing trust. I appreciate this. I carefully studied his address to the nation on Tuesday. And I would rather disagree with a case he made on American exceptionalism, stating that the United States’ policy is ‘what makes America different. It’s what makes us exceptional.’ It is extremely dangerous to encourage people to see themselves as exceptional, whatever the motivation. There are big countries and small countries, rich and poor, those with long democratic traditions and those still finding their way to democracy. Their policies differ, too. We are all different, but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.”

Putin’s dismissal of “American exceptionalism” angered many U.S. lawmakers.

In his Prava commentary, McCain:

— Begins by saying ” I am not anti-Russian. I am pro-Russian, more pro-Russian than the regime that misrules you today.”

— Says “I believe the Russian people, no less than Americans, are endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

— Writes that “President Putin and his associates do not believe in these values. They don’t respect your dignity or accept your authority over them. They punish dissent and imprison opponents. They rig your elections. They control your media. They harass, threaten, and banish organizations that defend your right to self-governance.”

— Criticizes Putin for “allying Russia with some of the world’s most offensive and threatening tyrannies.”

— Tells Russians that “I do believe in you. I believe in your capacity for self-government and your desire for justice and opportunity. I believe in the greatness of the Russian people, who suffered enormously and fought bravely against terrible adversity to save your nation. I believe in your right to make a civilization worthy of your dreams and sacrifices. When I criticize your government, it is not because I am anti-Russian. It is because I believe you deserve a government that believes in you and answers to you. And, I long for the day when you have it.”

NPR Moscow correspondent Corey Flintoff reminds us that Pravda “is part of the officially sanctioned opposition, so it has Kremlin approval.” But neither Pravda’s website nor its print version are widely read in Russia, he adds.

Obama: Criticism Leveled At Me "Doesn"t Have To Do With My Race In Particular"

GWEN IFILL, PBS NEWSHOUR: I interviewed Taylor Branch, the civil rights historian, for part of our series on the March on Washington yesterday, and one of the things he said was that you suffer – you are a victim of partisan racial gridlock. That’s the way he put it. And you talked a moment ago about that a little bit. I wonder whether you think that’s true, and if so, what, if anything, the first African-American president can do to break through that kind of motivated gridlock.

PRESIDENT OBAMA: …I do think what – what you’ve seen – and I – I touched on this theme during the speech – I think it has less to do with my – my race, but there is an argument that was made in 1964, 1965 on through the ’80s and ’90s in which those who resisted any change in the status quo, particularly when it came to economic opportunity, made two big arguments.

###

OBAMA: And you know, there’s a line that’s drawn between the deserving poor and the undeserving poor. And you know, that, I think, has been a fairly explicit politics in this country for some time. And it’s directed at Bill Clinton or Nancy Pelosi just as much as it’s directed at me. I – I think it – it doesn’t have to do with my race in particular; it has to do with an effort to make sure people who might otherwise challenge the existing ways that things work are divided.

In the clip below Russel Brand gives a perspective that has rarely been heard on the mainstream media.  He not only questions the official story of the recent chemical weapons attacks in Syria, but also brings up the fact that many western governments lied to the world so they could go to war in Iraq.

In the short clip, Brand also talks about how more military intervention will not do Syria, or any other country, any good.

According to wikipedia:

Russell Edward Brand (born 4 June 1975)[5] is an English comedian, actor, and author.

In 2004, Brand achieved mainstream fame in the UK as the host of Big Brother’s Big Mouth, a Big Brother spin-off. In 2007, he had his first major film role in St Trinian’s. He became known in the United States in 2008, after his major role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall; the film led to a starring role in Get Him to the Greek in 2010. He also worked as a voice actor for animated films Despicable Me in 2010 and Hop in 2011. He starred in the 2011 remake of the 1981 Dudley Moore film Arthur.

Brand is noted in the British media for his eccentricity and for controversies such as his dismissal from MTV after he dressed as Osama bin Laden, his behaviour as presenter of various award ceremonies and his former drug use. In 2008, he resigned from the BBC following prank calls he made to actor Andrew Sachs on The Russell Brand Show, which led to major changes to the BBC’s policy. His drug use, alcoholism and promiscuity have influenced his comedic material and public image. He is also widely known for his short marriage to Katy Perry which ended in 2012.[1]

PirateBrowser Beats Blockades, Doesn"t Make You Invisible to NSA

PirateBrowser

Late last week the Pirate Bay, that jolly torrent tracker/political party, announced a new Web browser designed to circumvent Internet censorship. Dubbed the PirateBrowser, this handy Web crawler is filled with special tools to help you circumvent the frequent blockades of The Pirate Bay. Just don’t expect it to keep Big Brother from watching.

According to the PirateBrowser website, the browser consists of Firefox Portable along with a Tor client called Vidalia and the foxyproxy addon. The PirateBrowser’s creators write that there have been “no modifications to any of the packages used” so everything is (allegedly) on the up-and-up.

But with NSA surveillance as the security topic du jour, many people seem to have assumed that the PirateBrowser would keep Big Brother from peeking over your shoulder. This doesn’t appear to be the case.

At the very top of the PirateBrowser page, an FAQ informs visitors that the browser won’t provide total anonymity online. “While it uses Tor network, which is designed for anonymous surfing, this browser is intended just to circumvent censorship — to remove limits on accessing websites your government doesn’t want you to know about,” reads the website.

What It Doesn’t It Do
Connecting to the Tor network bounces your browser requests through a string of random volunteer servers. Each server in the chain can only read one of the encrypted relay requests, making it harder to figure out exactly who did what online. While fascinating, and vital for journalists and human rights activists, it’s not perfect.

In a 2009 blogpost, a Tor representative explained how a determined observer could probably discover who went to which website if they were able to monitor traffic going into and out of the Tor network.

“The way we generally explain it is that Tor tries to protect against traffic analysis, where an attacker tries to learn whom to investigate,” reads the blog post. “But Tor can’t protect against traffic confirmation (also known as end-to-end correlation), where an attacker tries to confirm a hypothesis by monitoring the right locations in the network and then doing the math.”

Just last week we got another object lesson in the limits of Tor’s security. Reportedly, a known Javascript exploit in older version of Firefox portable was used to gather evidence against Eric Eoin Marques—who law enforcement claims runs the largest child pornography ring on the planet. The FBI is presumed to have been involved.

In that attack, an iframe tag was loaded onto websites hosted within the Tor network by the (in)famous Freedom Hosting. The tag loaded Javascript which in turn recorded the MAC address and Windows computer name of the visiting computer, and then sent that information off to servers in Virginia allegedly belonging to the FBI.

So What Does It Do?
In short: PirateBrowser keeps people using Pirate Bay. In a quote attributed to Pirate Bay by The Register and others, the Torrent tracker says, “Do you know any people who can’t access TPB or other torrent sites because they are blocked? Recommend PirateBrowser to them. It’s a simple one-click browser that circumvents censorship and blockades and makes the site instantly available and accessible.”

While there is almost certainly a healthy dash of “fight the man” and civil-liberties mixed in with the PirateBrowser, there’s also a lot of self-interest. Torrents are a great way to download large files (legal or otherwise) but they work best when lots of people are sharing and downloading the file at the same time. The whole point of BitTorrent was that popular files are easier to download, not harder.

When The Pirate Bay is blocked by whole countries or ISPs, fewer people are contributing to the torrents, making the service less valuable. The PirateBrowser, in theory, keeps people engaged with the service and contributing to downloads.

And then there’s they money. The Pirate Bay does include advertising on its website and notably the PirateBrowser did not come pre-loaded with AdBlock. Admittedly, hosting a popular website is not cheap, especially when you’re frequently being taken to court, but the more people are on the site the better it is for Pirate Bay.

According to TorrentFreak, the PirateBrowser is just the first step as The Pirate Bay is reportedly “working on a special BitTorrent-powered browser, which lets users store and distribute The Pirate Bay and other websites on their own.” Now that sounds interesting.

None of this is to say the PirateBrowser couldn’t be a useful tool for a political blogger in Tehran, but there are other services already available for them and purpose-built with anonymity in mind. While it’s good to see more browsers that take anonymization seriously, hopefully future browsers will be a little more robust.
