Brands Crowdsource Product Shoots via Instagram

What’s This?

Coach-from-aboveCoach curates Instagram images of people wearing the brand’s shoes.

Businessweek

In a world increasingly filtered through Instagram, a carefully crafted photo shoot starts to look dated. That’s why retailers are rushing to crowdsource their product shots — harvesting a stream of photos from social platforms to help sell everything from West Elm couches to Coach handbags.

The photos are typically curated in galleries, where each picture is linked to a page selling the product. Increasingly, the amateur images are also showing up directly on product pages, next to professionally styled pictures. “The path to purchase has evolved tremendously, and consumers are much more likely to trust their peers than a brand,” said Mimi Banks, director of social media at L’Oreal’s Lancome brand.

The team at Lancome recently goaded women into posting portraits of themselves sans makeup for a project coded “#bareselfie.” The campaign urged women to “be proud of the skin you’re in,” but it also tied in nicely with one of Lancome’s newest products: a cosmetic called Dreamtone that promises to correct blemishes and weird skin tones without blush and powder.

“It’s a challenging ask,” Banks said of getting strangers to share stripped-down selfies. “But people love social clout — to be acknowledged by the brand.”

Coach, meanwhile, is burnishing its brand with a website that collects photos from women wearing its shoes all over the world. The pictures — routed to the company via the hashtag #coachfromabove — aren’t a far cry from what one would find in a professional lookbook.

Both strategies constitute more than branding, according to Olapic, a New York-based startup that helps retail companies collect, curate, and display social content. Photo tie-ins from Facebook and Instagram increase the odds of a purchase by from 5 percent to 12 percent on average, according to co-founder Luis Sanz. What’s more, there is plenty of material: Olapic’s clients feature only about 4 percent of the photos they capture.

“The structure of an e-commerce site has basically been the same since the beginning of the Internet,” Sanz said. “But as soon as we started doing this, the results were really good.” Olapic, which launched in 2010, closed a $ 5 million round of funding in July. It also won the backing of Scott Galloway, a New York University marketing professor known for founding Red Envelope.

Galloway said Olapic is hitting a sweet spot in e-commerce: High-quality cameras are now standard in new smartphones, and consumers are searching for a sense of authenticity that’s lacking in traditional advertising. “If I can show a Coach bag looking great on me, it carries more credibility than if Annie Leibowitz makes it look great,” Galloway said.

The photos also prime purchases by addressing what might best be called a failure of imagination. For instance, consumers who like a throw pillow from West Elm, a Williams-Sonoma home-goods brand, might be more eager to buy if they see it paired with a particular couch or carpet. That’s one of the main strategies behind the company’s #myWestElm campaign, which went up in September.

“We don’t want to be style dictators,” said Abigail Jacobs, West Elm’s vice president of brand marketing. “And there’s this age-old thing that we love seeing inside other peoples’ homes. [...] The goal really is for them to inspire each other.”

An “inspired” customer is often a spendthrift customer. What’s more, social media lets retailers engage in an incessant exercise in AB testing. Coach, for example, might decide to make more of a particular shoe in red if photos of that color appear more often and get more positive feedback.

The practice isn’t entirely new, but it is spreading through the retail industry at a rapid pace. Web marketers are starting to develop best practices. Just this week, two marketing professors at the University of Wisconsin unveiled an algorithm that promises to help retailers select the best photos to drive sales. The researchers found that increased purchasing activity comes from unfiltered photos without long captions, question marks, or exclamation points. In short, authenticity is all.

West Elm, meanwhile, has found another surefire attention-getter: pets. Everything gets more “likes” when it has an adorable animal on it. That’s just a law of the Internet — no research required.

VIDEO: Does Miranda Kerr Have A New Man?

It looks like Miranda Kerr is not wasting any time! The super model, who split from hubby Orlando Bloom in October, reportedly has a new man already! A source tells Page Six that Miranda is dating Australian billionaire James Packer. The two grew up in the same town in Australia and have both recently split from their spouses. We’re not sure if these two are really an item, but one thing is for sure, Orlando is definitely still a part of Miranda’s life! The two were spotted together in NYC this week and Miranda even posted a picture to Instagram from Orlando’s Romeo & Juliet play. Looks like we will just have to keep our eyes on Miranda to see if this new man is the real deal.

This film made of Instagram photos shows how alike we really are

When you’re browsing Instagram, it’s hard not to get a sense of deja vu — whether it’s a delicious cup of coffee or an adorable baby, people are capturing images of largely the same things. “Instagram is an incredible resource for all kinds of images,” says filmmaker Thomas Jullien. “I wanted to create structure out of this chaos.” In his aptly titled video An Instagram short film, Jullien gathered 852 different photos, each from a different Instagram user, and organized them by subject. You’ll see nearly identical shots of everything from closeups of eye makeup to iconic locations like the Statue of Liberty, and it’s a strangely compelling watch despite its familiarity. You might think that your photo of the Sydney Opera House is something special, but it’s been taken many times before.

With Launch Of 3.0, Adobe Social Supports Instagram, LinkedIn, And More, Plus Predictive Capabilities

Adobe says version 3.0 of Adobe Social, its set of tools for social marketing, is going live right now.

When I met with Bill Ingram, vice president of product management for digital marketing, and Emi Hofmeister, senior manager of product marketing, they said Adobe Social is part of a larger effort to revamp Adobe’s marketing products. Last year, they conducted surveys about how the company was doing, and they discovered, as paraphrased by Ingram, that “we’re kind of hard to do business with.”

One reason: With 26 different products (and that’s just on the marketing side), it was hard to know what to buy. So Adobe consolidated the line down to five core products — Adobe Analytics, Adobe Target, Adobe Experience Manager, Adobe Media Optimizer, and yes, Adobe Social, which launched last fall. (If less than a year doesn’t seem like enough time to reach version 3.0, that’s because the version that came out last fall was technically considered Adobe Social 2.0. Because reasons.)

As for what’s actually new, Adobe Social now includes support for Flickr, Foursquare, Instagram, and LinkedIn. (That’s on top of previous support for Facebook, Google+, Reddit, Tumblr, and Twitter.) The new integrations include full access to Foursquare’s firehouse of data and the ability to both publish to and analyze from LinkedIn Pages and Groups.

In addition, the predictive publishing capabilities that were announced back in April have gone live, giving publishers tips about what kind of social media content they should publish and when so that they can improve their engagement. And it uses the new interface for the Adobe Marketing Cloud, which makes it easy for different teams to collaborate across Adobe’s various marketing products.

To illustrate the new experience, Hofmeister took me through an example. As a hypothetical online publisher, she spotted a trending topic, formulated a post on that topic linking to a relevant article, looked at the full calendar of scheduled posts, scheduled the post for an empty slot, got a recommendation for a better time to publish, then scheduled her post.

Thanks to new “parent-child” authoring capabilities, she was able to just write one post and push it to all social networks, customizing as necessary. And then, of course, she could track whether that post was to driving the results that she was interested in and use that data to do better next time.

Instagram Has 130 Million Monthly Active Users

What’s This?

Kevin-systrom

Instagram now has 130 million monthly active users, co-founder Kevin Systrom revealed Thursday at Facebook. Those users have shared 16 billion photos on the service since it launched in late 2010 and Liked 1 billion posts every day.

Systrom revealed the stats during a Facebook event Thursday just before he formally announced the introduction of video to Instagram. As Systrom pointed out, the video service will be available to 130 million people “on day one,” making it a huge competitor to similar services like Twitter’s Vine.

Facebook’s co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also revealed during the event that Instagram’s team has tripled in size from the 12 people who were on staff when the startup was acquired just more than a year ago.

Instagram topped 100 million users in September.
