GoDaddy Updates Its User Protection Policies In Wake Of Infamous Twitter Account Extortion

GoDaddy has updated its account security policies in the wake of the now infamous extortion of a Twitter account. As TechCrunch previously reported, a hacker claimed to have gained the Twitter user’s last four credit card digits from PayPal, which was then used to convince GoDaddy to reset their account.

The compromised GoDaddy account — and its requisite domain collection — was used as leverage to extort the user out of their excellent Twitter account, @N. In the wake of the hacking and ensuing outrage over lax security, denials of culpability, TechCrunch wondered out loud why Twitter itself hadn’t made @N whole.

We spoke to @N, known to most as Naoki Hiroshima, after the fact and and he detailed a few things that GoDaddy should do to tighten its security, methods that might have helped protect his account:

“[Two factor authentication] can’t prevent this from happening again,” says Hiroshima. “GoDaddy allowed the guy to reset everything over the phone. As long as a company only uses the last 4 digits of a [credit card] to verify [identity], this will keep happening. They should ask multiple questions.”

GoDaddy has made steps that mirror what Hiroshima felt was needed. In a tweet today, the company said the following:

@N_is_stolen Will do. We now require 8 card digits, lock after 3 attempts and deal with 2-factor authentication accounts differently. ^NF

Requiring more credit card digits matters as if the hacker in question had been required to provide that quantity of information, the jig would have been up prematurely: The hacker claims that PayPal gave them the last four digits of Hiroshima’s credit card. If the GoDaddy threshold had been higher, we wouldn’t be talking about this now.

It’s a bummer that GoDaddy was able to be compromised in the above way, but the new security policies should reduce future risk for its customers, of which I am one.

I’ve reached out to GoDaddy for a fuller explanation of the changes to its security policies, and will update this post when I hear back.

Good news: Obama administration doing a bit of soul searching in the wake of all these screwups

President Obama’s out-of-nowhere-save-political-desperation announcement this week that he — emphasis on the he — intends to ‘allow‘ insurers to temporarily extend policies that have recently been canceled because they do not meet the coverage standards established by his signature legislative achievement. It’s an almost absurdly unworkable “fix” designed purely to enable the White House to be able to shift some of the blame for cancelled plans onto the insurance companies themselves, prompting a lot of people to wonder… is the president and his administration just making all of this up at will as they along?

Because that’s certainly what it looks like. Apparently, the White House is finally cottoning on to their steadily worsening image as a harebrained, unscrupulous, wildly political, say-anything talking-points machine, so no worries — they’re going to look into it. The WSJ reports:

The White House has begun a quiet self-assessment in the wake of the troubled health-law launch, recognizing that administration officials missed warning signs and put too much trust in their management practices in implementing a program that is the centerpiece of President Barack Obama‘s domestic legacy.

White House officials want to learn how the rollout flopped, despite what they believed had been sufficient planning, preparation and attention to the issue. Although not a full-bore “forensic” inquiry into what went wrong, the administration aims to organize itself so that “going forward, we don’t have these problems,” a senior White House official said in an interview. …

More details about managerial shortcomings emerged Friday, when a House committee released emails showing that staff who were working on the HealthCare.gov website worried the project was off track months before the Oct. 1 launch.

JAPAN (INTELLIHUB) — After the Fukushima nuclear disaster, one can never be too safe, so recently Yamamoto has launched the world’s first radiation-resistant clothing line able to block both radioactive beta and gamma rays.

The outfit comes in 2-parts, an underwear section and a wetsuit like swimwear section as depicted in a recent “press release”.  

When a human is equipped with both sections the suit is quite effective at blocking radiation and will likely usher in a new wave of radiation-resistant clothing. Possibly even stylish trends.

Although the suit is designed for use in radioactive emergency situations as well and may possibly aid divers in future disaster scenarios.

News.CNet.com reported, “It consists of a top and bottom and is made of lead-based fabric. Weighing 7.5 pounds and probably not very comfortable, it will be priced at about $ 825 when it goes on sale, according to Yamamoto.

Meanwhile, a wet suit-style garment it showed off recently can apparently block nearly 100 percent of beta rays.

Weighing some 6.6 pounds, the swimsuit is made of rubber embedded with carbon to block the radiation. It’s priced at about $ 1,073 and is slated to go on sale in late November.”_[2]
