Syria peace talks in Geneva break off, no new date set

A second round of peace talks between Syria‘s warring sides broke off Saturday without making any progress and without a date being set for a third round, United Nations mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said.

“I think it is better that every side goes back and reflects on their responsibility, [and on whether] they want this process to continue or not,” Lakhdar Brahimi told reporters in Geneva, according to the Agence France-Presse.

The Syrian government, meanwhile, accused Israel and the United States of undermining the talks and blamed the opposition’s refusal to settle the issue of “terrorism” for the deadlock.

The Algerian-born diplomat said an agreement to evacuate people from the besieged city of Homs had raised hopes that weren’t satisfied at the Geneva talks involving opposition groups and representatives of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

The head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) also stressed the meager results so far, saying the Homs evacuation did not herald any wider improvement in humanitarian access to Syria’s civil war zones, where the United Nations says it cannot reach up to 3 million people in need.

“I am very very sorry and I apologize to the Syrian people that their hopes which were very very high here, that something will happen here,” Brahimi told journalists after the talks, according to Reuters.

“I think that the little that has been achieved in Homs gave them even more hope that maybe this is the beginning of coming out of this horrible crisis they are in.”

Death toll at 140,000, opposition says

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the 3-year-old conflict has killed more than 140,000 people — more than 7,000 of them children.

The London-based Observatory added the period since the “Geneva 2″ peace talks for Syria began last month had been the bloodiest of the conflict.

The rebels come mainly from Syria’s majority Sunni Muslims and have been joined by radical Sunni groups such as Al Qaeda and other foreign militants.

Shia Muslim Iran and the powerful Lebanese Shia movement Hezbollah have thrown their weight behind Assad, who is from Syria’s minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shia Islam, and whose family has dominated Syria for 44 years.

Thousands of people fled a rebel-held western Syrian town, Yabroud, on Friday after it was bombed and shelled in an operation that has stirred fears of a major assault by ground troops, the UN said.

Al-Manar television, run by Lebanon‘s Hezbollah, said the Syrian army had advanced in the Yabroud area, seizing control of the town’s main road and a nearby border crossing that it said was used for smuggling

Agenda for next talks, whenever they are

Brahimi said the points to be discussed at the next Geneva round include violence and terrorism, a transitional governing body, national institutions and national reconciliation.

However, he added, the Syrian government wants to first deal with the issue of combating terrorism — the word it uses to described armed opposition to Assad’s rule — and has refused to deal with any other points until that’s resolved.

US President Barack Obama said on Friday he was considering new ways to pressure Assad but did not expect the conflict to be resolved any time soon.

However, Obama told reporters in California that “there are going to be some immediate steps that we have to take to help the humanitarian assistance there.”

Your Weekend PSA: Using Date Ranges in Google Search

This is a public service announcement about a feature of Google search that few people seem to know about: date ranges. This is useful in a couple of ways. First, I sometimes want only pages that are really recent, and it’s handy to be able to restrict results to the past hour or the past day. Alternatively, sometimes I’m looking for something old, which is hard to find because Google heavily prioritizes recent results. A specific date range fixes that.

In any case, it’s easy to specify a date range. After your results come up, click Search tools at the top of the page. Then click Any time and choose an option from the dropdown list. That’s it.

Date set for Taliban chief release

Breaking news

Former Afghan Taliban second-in-command Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is to be released from prison in Pakistan on Saturday, the foreign ministry says.

His release is seen as a key step in boosting the reconciliation process in Afghanistan.

Mullah Baradar is one of the four men who founded the Taliban movement in Afghanistan in 1994.

He became a linchpin of the insurgency after the Taliban were toppled by the US-led invasion in 2001.

He was captured in the Pakistani city of Karachi in 2010.

Turkish Unions Hold National Strike as Protesters Face Worst Crackdown to Date

Transcript

This is a rush transcript. Copy may not be in its final form.

AMY GOODMAN: In these last few minutes, we turn to Turkey, where a nationwide strike called by several of the country’s leading unions is underway now with calls to end the police crackdown on demonstrations. The Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions and the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions are among those filling the streets. Other groups representing doctors, engineers, dentists have also joined the action.

Today’s strike comes as riot police continued their violent crackdown on protesters, using tear gas, water cannon and rubber bullets to disperse the crowds. The anti-government protests have swept the country for more than two weeks and were renewed this weekend following the forced eviction of protesters at Gezi Park, which was occupied for 18 days by people protesting against plans for its redevelopment. The prime minister has defended the crackdown, saying he did his duty as prime minister.

For more, we go to independent journalist, also speaking to us from Istanbul and from Express magazine, Çiğdem Öztürk.

Can you describe what’s happening now?

ÇIĞDEM ÖZTÜRK: Well, hello. Can you hear me?

AMY GOODMAN: Yes, we hear you fine.

ÇIĞDEM ÖZTÜRK: OK, so, hello to everybody.

Actually, what’s happening at the moment in Instanbul is we are waiting a little bit tensely about the 4:00 rally, which is for the general strike declared by the Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey and Confederation of Public Workers’ Unions. So, at 4:00 normally, the people will march in Taksim Square, but the Instanbul governorship declared that this is not a legal act, and they will not let the people walk. So, there is just a few minutes, and the people are gathering, not just in Istanbul; as this is a general strike, it’s all over Turkey and in other parts of Turkey, as well. The people, the civil servants and the workers are on strike, and they are walking. So we’ll see what’s going to happen.

Maybe I could tell you a little bit about what happened last night. Last night, Instanbul had to face one of the most brutal police attacks—and not just the police, actually, also the AKP, the ruling party, supporters were some—in some groups, were on the streets with sticks and knives, trying to attack the demonstrators. And yesterday, again, according to the bar association, here at least 400 people were detained. But the problem is there is no real numbers. So, they only get news by phones and by interviewing people, so we don’t know the exact numbers, and we don’t know the names of the people who were detained. Well, that’s the situation, in short.

AMY GOODMAN: Çiğdem Öztürk, we just have about 30 seconds, independent journalist, also speaking to us from Instanbul and from Express magazine. The significance of where these protests go from here?

ÇIĞDEM ÖZTÜRK: Well, actually, what’s going to happen, the main problem is the governor and the political parties are not so in the protests. Opining by the political parties is only the Justice and Development Party in the protest. The least is the people, I would say. I mean, they did [inaudible] on the prime minister naming the protesters as some workers and some, you know, terrorists. But, anyway, these are people. Just a part of it is from organizations. So this is a moment for the people.

AMY GOODMAN: Çiğdem Öztürk, we’re going to have to leave it there. I thank you very much for being with us. We’ll continue to cover Turkey.
