Seven anti-Putin protesters sentenced to jail, more than 100 detained

Seven opponents of President Vladimir Putin were sentenced to prison terms ranging from two and a half to four years on Monday over a demonstration that turned violent, and riot police detained more than 100 people protesting outside the court.

The protesters, who blame police for the violence in central Moscow in 2012, demanded the release of the defendants and shouted “shame” and “Maidan” — a reference to the Kyiv square that has been the focus of protests that brought the overthrow of Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich.

Relatives and lawyers had feared upheaval in neighboring Ukraine, where police were among the dead in a conflict the Kremlin blames on opposition leaders and the West, would prompt the court to send a firm signal by imposing prison sentences.

An eighth defendant was given a suspended sentence that allows her to avoid jail; but the rulings caused outrage among Kremlin critics who see the prisoners as victims of a clampdown on dissent marking Putin’s election to a third term as president.

Opposition activists said more than 230 people were detained by riot police who worked their way through the gathering at the courthouse, detaining protesters one by one. Police put the figure at more than a hundred.

The judge on Friday had found the defendants guilty of rioting and attacking police at a protest on May 6, 2012, the day before Putin, in power since 2000, returned to the presidency after a stint as prime minister. The defendants blame police for the clashes that erupted and pleaded not guilty.

The sentences are likely to draw criticism from the United States and European countries that have expressed concern about the “Bolotnaya” trial and have accused Russia of restricting the freedom of assembly and expression.

Government opponents called for a protest outside the Kremlin later on Monday. Defense lawyers said they would appeal the verdicts.

Houston father pays child support in full but gets six months in jail anyway

  • A Houston-area man expects to turn himself in to the Harris County jail in a few days after receiving a six-month sentence for failing to pay his child support … which appears to be completely paid up.

The story of Clifford Hall began to go viral Friday after Houston’s Fox affiliate, Fox 26 reported the man’s plight.

Hall claims that his child support payments had been modified in court without his knowledge, and that he quickly made up the $ 3000 difference before his court appearance in November. While he’s been an active participant in his 11-year-old son’s life, the court cited him for violating his visitation requirements — another condition he says had been changed earlier without notice.

His ex-wife had been pressing for an additional $ 3000 in attorney’s fees.

The story itself neither names Hall’s ex-wife, nor her attorney. A call to Quanell X, a minister in the New Black Panther Party who has been pressing Hall’s case, hasn’t yet been returned.

Family court Judge Lisa Millard told Fox 26 that she found Hall in contempt after he walked out of the courtroom when she pronounced him in violation, which she says is a big no-no and may have contributed to the sentencing.

Watch a report on Hall’s case below.

Drug court judge allegedly drunk during proceedings; goes to rehab instead of jail

Judge Gisele Pollack
(Source: ABC)

BROWARD COUNTY, FL — A Florida judge presiding over misdemeanor drug cases reportedly showed up to work intoxicated and had to be removed from court. In a palpable irony, even a person who has dedicated her career toward meddling in other people’s lives and using the force of government against them is herself incapable of keeping herself sober at work. The judge faces no legal consequences and instead of being carted off to jail like so many of the recreational drug users she has dealt with, she will voluntarily put herself in rehab.

Judge Gisele Pollack, who founded Boward County’s misdemeanor drug court in 2005, was seen verbally assaulting her judicial assistant and yelling for her car keys to be returned before another judge intervened, according to an unidentified source.

The tirade followed Pollack’s abrupt dismissal of the day’s session after only serving an hour and a half on the bench, during which time she began slurring her words while addressing defendants.

“She’s not afraid to lock somebody up if they’re repeatedly thumbing their nose at authority.”

One can only speculate how many cases Pollack, an admitted alcoholic, may have presided over while under the influence. She says she will address what she calls “health issues” during an intensive two week outpatient program before returning to the bench.

Not everyone in the legal community feels that’s quite an adequate remedy.

“Could you imagine doing a night in jail because a judge couldn’t understand or appreciate your argument?” said attorney Steven Schaet. “If she’s adversely affected someone’s life, she shouldn’t be on the bench.”

There are thus far no indications Pollack will face official disciplinary action. She has, however, checked herself into rehab.

Pollack’s court provides misdemeanor drug offenders opportunities to have their charges dismissed and their records wiped clean if they complete six months of rehabilitative treatment. Offenders who relapse face tougher consequences.

“She’s not afraid to lock somebody up if they’re repeatedly thumbing their nose at authority,” said defense attorney Bill Gelin.

In view of the vague penalties high-profile offenders are handed relative to the punishments routinely meted out to the commonfolk, it’s clear American society operates with orders of jurisprudence. U.S. Senator Donne Trotter, for instance, received one year of court supervision after he was caught trying to smuggle a handgun onto a plane at O’Hare airport late last year, and Keith Tabron, a former “Detective of the Year” for the Washington D.C. police department, was given a five year suspended sentence and probation for furtively videotaping his stepdaughter in the shower; a felony that under Maryland law demands sex offender registration. Prosecutors granted Tabron immunity from this provision, ostensibly because he had no prior criminal history.

Addiction is a tragic and destructive problem, as Judge Pollack surely must be aware. But it is not one that the government is capable of fairly or competently dealing with. In the spirit of justice, one would hope when she returns to the bench, she comes back with a new outlook on the oppressive War on Drugs… and that she comes back in a lucid state when holding people’s fates in her hands.

By Nate Raymond

NEW YORK Nov 22 (Reuters) – A former Credit Suisse Group AG trader was sentenced to 30 months in prison on Friday for his role in a scheme to artificially inflate subprime mortgage bond prices.

Kareem Serageldin, the bank’s former global head of structured credit, pleaded guilty in federal court in New York in April to conspiracy to falsify books and records.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein in Manhattan also ordered Serageldin to pay a fine of $ 150,000. The sentence was lower than the up to five years in prison requested by prosecutors in the case.

Prosecutors accused Serageldin, 40, of conspiring with other Credit Suisse employees working for him to mis-mark the values of subprime mortgage-backed bonds between August 2007 and February 2008, when housing and credit conditions were worsening.

The goal, prosecutors said, was to paint a false picture that the trading book Serageldin oversaw was profitable. In total, the price manipulation contributed to Credit Suisse taking a $ 2.65 billion writedown in its 2007 year-end results, prosecutors said.

Two of his former colleagues, David Higgs and Salmaan Siddiqui, each pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge in 2012.

The bank has not been accused of wrongdoing.

Woman accused of stalking Alec Baldwin ordered to jail for contempt

  • NEW: Defendant ordered to spend 30 days in jail for interrupting proceedings

  • Genevieve Sabourin, a Canadian actress, is charged with stalking Alec Baldwin

  • She showed up at his house during his engagement to his current wife, Baldwin says

  • She also allegedly sent him e-mails

(CNN)[Breaking news update, posted at 11:12 a.m. ET]

A Canadian woman charged with stalking actor Alec Baldwin was held in contempt of court Wednesday morning for repeatedly interrupting proceedings in a New York City courtroom a day earlier.

Genevieve Sabourin, who had been scheduled to testify Wednesday in her defense, has been ordered to serve 30 days in jail. It was not immediately clear Wednesday morning whether she still would testify. She continued to make outbursts Wednesday, according to CNN’s Nischelle Turner, who was in the courtroom.

[Earlier version, posted at 2:48 a.m. ET]

Teary Alec Baldwin denies romance with alleged stalker; she yells ‘you’re lying!’

(CNN) — It could have been a scene from one of his movies.

A teary Alec Baldwin denying a romance with a woman he described as a stalker. The woman heckling “you’re lying!” as he testified in a New York City courtroom.

Except this was real life.

Genevieve Sabourin, a Canadian actress, is charged with stalking Baldwin and his wife. She says she’s not a stalker, but an ex-girlfriend of the “30 Rock” television star.

But during a court hearing Tuesday, Baldwin said she imagined the relationship, and she sent him numerous e-mails and voice mails along the way. CNN obtained copies of the e-mails.

“I am less than 10 minutes away from you tonight. Say ‘I do’ to me,” one e-mail says.

In another e-mail, she said she was ready to get married.

“I need to start my new life with my new name … in my new country, help my newly husband, you!”

In another e-mail, she admits defeat.

“I may have lost all the battles to win your heart over in the past two years, but I’ve learn (sic) so much,” it says.

Wiping away tears, Baldwin said Sabourin’s stalking has made him anxious and worried for his safety.

She showed up unannounced at his New York home in March last year, ruining his engagement to his now-wife, Hilaria Baldwin, the actor said.

Days later, she allegedly crashed an event the actor was hosting at New York City`s Lincoln Center.

Baldwin has admitted they had dinner once in 2010, but said that was it. They met through a mutual friend, he said.

Both Baldwin and Sabourin worked on the 2002 flop “The Adventures of Pluto Nash.” Baldwin has also appeared in numerous other movies, including “Along Came Polly.”

Unlike the actor, who didn’t say a word about the case to reporters, Sabourin is basking in the media spotlight. She grinned widely as she shared her side of the story with a group of reporters.

“I’m not gonna take a reduced plea for a crime I have not committed,” she said.

Sabourin has been arrested several times, including late last year for violating a court order by allegedly sending a series of tweets to Baldwin and his wife.

She was released from jail after a judge rejected a prosecution request for bail.

If found guilty, she faces up to a year in prison.

She testifies Wednesday.

Woman Endures Strip Search & Jail Time For Overdue Ticket

(credit: North Richland Hills Police Department)CBS DFW

NORTH TEXAS (CBSDFW.COM) – A North Texas woman was handcuffed, stripped down and booked into jail – all because of an overdue traffic ticket.

It was just a ticket. Sarah Boaz was cited in August after an officer said she ran a stop sign.

Boaz lost the ticket, but said she knows it was wrong not to have paid it right away. Despite those missteps, she also says she never expected a late fee or penalty to land her in jail.

It happens in every city, every day, at just about every intersection. Drivers roll past stop signs, and through stoplights. But getting caught, and getting a ticket, is nothing compared to what Boaz got.

“I guess it was just frustrating to me, that a bill that I pay a month late, I end up in jail for,” she said.

Boaz’ expected trip to work Wednesday morning never happened. Because of her unpaid ticket, the Richland Hills City Marshal was waiting at her house with a warrant for her arrest. “I’m like, nobody puts out a bench warrant after 60 days. Why would you do that? You wouldn’t do that.”

Even when Boaz arrived at the jail, in handcuffs, she still didn’t think it was real. Then a female officer started giving her instructions. She remembered the officer saying, “’I’m going to need you to undress. I’m going to need you to stand against the wall. Please don’t step in front of this white box, or I’ll take that’… aggressive toward me. Obviously I am going to jail.”

CBS 11 News learned a strip search is standard procedure for anyone brought to the jail in North Richland Hills.

Richland Hills is small enough that it only has one marshal. Warrants for unpaid tickets don’t sit around for months, like they might in larger cities.

Attorney Jason Smith told CBS 11 News though, there’s nothing requiring the city to put people in jail. “The constitution doesn’t keep the government or government officials from using common sense. Unfortunately, some police officers, some governments get overly aggressive because they want that ticket revenue.”

Municipal court officials said two reminders were sent to Boaz, which she says she never got.

A footnote – on Thursday, Boaz’ husband was issued a ticket for not stopping at a stop sign.

Saudi preacher gets eight years in jail

A Saudi court has passed a sentence of eight years in prison and 800 lashes on a preacher convicted of raping his junior daughter and torturing her to death.

The court on Monday also ordered Fayhan al-Ghamdi to pay his ex-wife – the girl’s mother – one million Saudi riyals (USD 270,000) in blood money, Turki al-Rasheed, the mother’s lawyer, said on Tuesday.

Ghamdi’s second wife, who is accused of taking part in the crime, was sentenced to 10 months in prison and 150 lashes.

The five-year-old Lama was admitted to hospital in December 2011 with multiple injuries, including a crushed skull and extensive bruising and burns. She died several months later.

Ghamdi confessed to having used cables and a cane to inflict the injuries, human rights activists said earlier this year.

Saudi and foreign rights activists have strongly condemned the Saudi court’s verdicts in the case as too lenient.

“We are extremely disappointed,” said Saudi rights activist Aziza al-Yousef. “He should have been jailed for life or executed to serve as an example,” she urged.

Another activist, Khuloud al-Fahd, said she was also shocked by Ghamdi’s punishment.

“A few years ago, two burglars stole two sheep and were sentenced to five years in prison and lashes. How can a father who killed his daughter be condemned to such a light sentence?” she questioned.

In Saudi Arabia, rape and murder are among several crimes punishable by death.

However, a father cannot be executed for murdering his children, nor can husbands be executed for murdering their wives. They might face a jail sentence between five to 12 years if convicted.

In August, Saudi Arabia adopted the kingdom’s first law to criminalize domestic violence. But the law has not yet been implemented.

WTF? California governor signs bill to jail or fine photographers

MassPrivateI

Sacramento, CA — Paparazzi and others who harass the children of public figures will face tougher penalties under legislation that California Gov. Jerry Brown signed Tuesday.

The bill from state Sen. Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, will boost penalties for actions that include taking photos and video of a child without consent and in a harassing manner.

Celebrities such as actresses Halle Berry and Jennifer Garner urged lawmakers to support SB606. Berry testified before several legislative committees that her daughter has been intimidated by aggressive photographers who follow them daily, often shouting as they snap pictures.

The measure also will help protect the children of police officers, judges and others, who might be susceptible to harassment or unwanted attention due to their parents’ occupations, de Leon said.

“Kids shouldn’t be tabloid fodder nor the target of ongoing harassment,” de León said. He added that the new law “will give children, no matter who their parents are, protection from harassers who go to extremes to turn a buck.”

Under the legislation, which goes into effect in January, violators could face up to a year in county jail and a fine of up to $ 10,000. Fines would increase for subsequent convictions.

The bill also allows for parents to bring a civil action against violators to seek damages and attorney’s fees.

Media organizations, including the California Newspaper Publishers Association, opposed the legislation, saying it was overly broad and could restrict legitimate newsgathering activities.

De Leon’s office says the bill does not infringe on First Amendment rights because it targets the photographer’s conduct, not the act of taking a photograph. (how long before other states and police adopt this?)

CIA-Linked Vet Who Fought With Al-Qaeda Released From Jail

Eric Harroun gets “sweet plea deal” despite supporting terrorists who killed US troops

Any Army veteran whose father said he was working for the CIA has been released from jail despite fighting alongside an Al-Qaeda terrorist group in Syria that was responsible for killing US troops in Iraq.

31-year-old Eric Harroun has received what has been described as a “sweet plea deal” after he faced life in prison for providing material support to a terrorist organization by fighting with Jabhat Al-Nusra, the group that the New York Times reported, “killed numerous American troops in Iraq,” and is now the leading front line fighting force in Syria.

Al-Nusra is led by Ayman al-Zawahri, the head of Al-Qaeda who recently called for terror attacks inside the United States.

“Under a deal entered in federal court in Alexandria, Harroun pleaded guilty to an obscure law regulating munition exports. He was sentenced to time served. The plea agreement itself remains sealed, though court records show it was entered Thursday,” reports the Associated Press.

Harroun, who has been in prison since March, was released on 3 years probation with a paltry $ 100 fine.

Despite claiming to have shot at least 10 people and “fighting alongside jihadists and America-hating terrorists while celebrating his bloody exploits on YouTube videos,” Harroun is now a free man. A video uploaded to YouTube earlier this year shows Harroun celebrating the downing of a Syrian Army helicopter while his fellow militants shout “Allahu Akbar”.

Absent from media reports about Harroun’s release is the fact that his father told CBS 5 earlier this year that Harroun was working for the CIA in Syria.

“I know he was doing some work for the CIA over there….I know for a fact that he was passing information onto the CIA,” Darryl Harroun told reporters.

While individuals merely accused of being terrorists are thrown into prison camps like Guantanamo Bay for years and prevented from having a trial, Harroun has got off with a slap on the wrist despite evidence clearly indicating that he fought alongside terrorists in Syria.

American citizen Anwar Al-Awlaki was killed by a drone strike simply for producing propaganda videos and communicating with accused terrorists. His 16-year-old son was similarly slaughtered for merely sharing his father’s surname. Other American citizens like John Walker Lindh were imprisoned and tortured in Guantanamo Bay for fighting with the Taliban.

The difference is that Harroun was apparently working alongside Al-Nusra at the behest of the CIA, supporting terrorists whom the Obama administration is now backing in its bid to topple Bashar Al-Assad.
