Scientists discover remains of swamp monster in Texas

The skull is thought to be over 200 million years old. According to a study done on the priceless find, the skull belonged to a beastly creature which hid out in the swamps of West Texas during the Triassic period. The species is believed to be around 17-foot or 5.2 meters long, having a 2-foot or 0.6 meter snout.

Researchers claim that the fossils of the creature are from a brand new species never before discovered by man. It is said to be an unknown kind of Phytosaur, which is extinct but at one point in time hunted fish, with its primary preying spots being near shallow edges of rivers, lakes, and other small bodies of water.

“They had basically the same lifestyle as the modern crocodile, by living in and around the water, eating fish, and whatever animals came to the margins of the rivers and lakes,” study researcher Bill Mueller, assistant curator of paleontology at the Museum of Texas Tech University, said in a statement.

Paleontologists have decided to name the new find Machaeroprosopus lottorum after the Lott family, which were in possession of the Texas Panhandle ranch during the time when the skulls were found in 2001.

“We found them in an area we’d been excavating in,” Mueller said, “I think we’ve gotten four skulls out of that area already. Doug Cunningham found this specimen, and then we dug it up. When he found it, just the very back end of the skull was sticking out of the ground. The rest was buried. We excavated it and brought it into the museum to finish preparation.”

Two skulls were found, though one of them labeled as male was not well kept. However, a couple of weeks down the road another skull was unearthed and believed to be that of a female.

“It was really well preserved with the teeth and everything,” Doug Cunningham, field research assistant at the Museum of Texas Tech University and co-author of the study, said, “Finding one with teeth is pretty rare. It was so odd, but when they come out of the ground, you have a long way to go to actually see what you have because they’re still covered in matrix. We were all kind of in awe of it. It had this long, skinny snout. It was quite a bit different. It took me years to get it prepped and ready. At the time, I was working full-time and I did that on my days off.”

The creatures were found in the Cooper Canyon formation in Garza, County, Texas. In the here and now, the area is dry but, back in the Triassic times, there was a forest and lake where the species did their hunting. The scientists’ discovery has been published in the journal Earth and Environmental Science Transactions of the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

Scientists Know More About Marijuana as a Medicine Than Many FDA Approved Pharmaceuticals

That"s the bottom line.

Opponents of legalizing cannabis for medicinal purposes are fond of arguing that the plant must be subjected to the same standards of clinical study and FDA review as conventional medicines. What they fail to mention is that cannabis and its active components have already been subjected to a greater degree of scientific scrutiny than many FDA-approved pharmaceuticals.

According to a just-published analysis of some 200 newly FDA-approved medications, few conventional drugs are tested in multiple, large-scale clinical assessing safety and efficacy trials prior to market approval. “[A]bout a third won approval on the basis of a single clinical trial, and many other trials involved small groups of patients and shorter durations,” reports the Washington Post in its summary of the study, which appears in the January edition of The Journal of the American Medical Association.  “Only about 40 percent of approvals included trials in which the new drug was compared with existing drugs on the market.”

By comparison, there exists over 20,000 published studies or reviews in the scientific literature referencing the cannabis plant and its cannabinoids, nearly half of which were published within the last five years, according to a keyword search on PubMed Central, the government repository for peer-reviewed scientific research. Of these, more than 100 are controlled clinical trials assessing the therapeutic efficacy of cannabinoids for a variety of indications.

A 2006 review of 72 of these trials, conducted between the years 1975 and 2004, identifies ten distinct pathologies for which controlled studies on cannabinoids have been published. The review concludes that these trial data “affirm that cannabinoids exhibit an interesting therapeutic potential as antiemetics, appetite stimulants in debilitating diseases (cancer and AIDS), analgesics, as well as in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injuries, Tourette syndrome, epilepsy and glaucoma.”

A 2010 review of 37 additional controlled trials, conducted between the years 2005 and 2009, similarly acknowledges the plant’s efficacy, finding, “Based on the clinical results, cannabinoids present an interesting therapeutic potential mainly as analgesics in chronic neuropathic pain, appetite stimulants in debilitating diseases (cancer and AIDS), as well as in the treatment of multiple sclerosis.” The review estimates that some 6,100 patients suffering from a wide range of ailments have taken part in clinical cannabis trials over the past decades – a far greater cohort of subjects than would typically participate in clinical trials for more conventional therapeutics.

Most recently, a 2012 review of more recent clinical trials conducted by the California Center for Medicinal Research, involving several hundred patients, concluded emphatically: “Recent clinical trials with smoked and vaporized marijuana, as well as other botanical extracts, indicate the likelihood that the cannabinoids can be useful in the management of neuropathic pain, spasticity due to multiple sclerosis, and possibly other indications…Based on evidence currently available the Schedule I classification is not tenable; it is not accurate that cannabis has no medical value, or that information on safety is lacking.”

The bottom line: Scientists now know more about cannabis as a medicine than regulators know about many of the FDA-approved pharmaceuticals that the plant could replace.

Robert Coghill, professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest Baptist (WFB) lead a study to explain how pain is registered differently within the general population.

Coghill said: “We found that individual differences in the amount of grey matter in certain regions of the brain are related to how sensitive different people are to pain.”

Less grey matter, which is associated with processing information, is observed in participants who were linked to having more acute receptivity to pain.

Researchers analyzed MRI scans from 116 volunteers to decipher their brain structure.

The study reads: “In search of an anatomical correlate of pain sensitivity, we used voxel-based morphometry to investigate the relationship between grey matter density across the whole brain and interindividual differences in pain sensitivity in 116 healthy volunteers (62 women, 54 men).”

Participants were asked to rate their pain level when a portion of their arm was exposed to heat of 48.8 degrees Celsius.

MRI scans, when combined with explanations by the participants, showed that lower amounts of detectible grey matter was correlated with the control of attention when the person experienced pain.

Nichole Emerson, graduate student and participant with Coghill, said: Subjects with higher pain intensity rating had less grey matter in brain regions that contribute to internal thoughts and control of attention.”

The study concludes: “These findings underscore the potential importance of processes related to default mode thought and attention in shaping individual differences in pain sensitivity and indicate that pain sensitivity can potentially be predicted on the basis of brain structure.”

With the release of this study, Coghill’s team hopes that by understanding how pain is registered and received in the brain, doctors and psychiatrists can develop tools for diagnosis and use new techniques to deal with certain mental states.

The Human Connectome Project (HCP) is dedicated to “understanding the complete details of neural connectivity.” They endeavor to “construct a map of the complete structural and functional neural connections in vivo within and across individuals.”

By compiling data on genetics, behavior, matter fiber pathways, and functional correlations, the HCP have refined and optimized “the spatial and functional resolution of our connectome neuroimaging” as well as acquiring “high resolution neuroimaging data” to enhance understanding of the “neuroanatomical connectedness of the human brain.”

Two years ago, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) diverted $ 2 billion of their yearly budget for research into creating a super solider as well as developing a synthetic police force.

Working with the human genome, DARPA hopes to manipulate certain gene expressions. In experimentation, DARPA and the military industrial pharmaceutical complex are using natural abilities that are enhanced through genetic engineering.

Some of the medical feats DARPA would like to enhance are the ability of military soldiers to regrow limbs destroyed in battle.

By eliminating empathy, the Department of Defense (DoD) hopes to “enhance” a soldier’s ability to “kill without care or remorse, shows no fear, can fight battle after battle without fatigue and generally behave more like a machine than a man.”

Scientists are researching the construction of soldiers that feel no pain, terror and do not suffer from fatigue as tests on the wiring of the human brain are furthered by Jonathan Moreno, professor of bioethics at Pennsylvania State University.

Moreno is working with the DoD in understanding neuroscience.

The Pentagon allocated $ 400 million to this research.

In the PNAC, the use of scientific enhancement and clinical trials could be turning our service men and women into gueinia pigs for the advancement of a super solider.

While Roger Pitman , professor of psychiatry at Harvard University is experimenting with propranolol which is a beta blocker that is believed to erase “terrifying memories”, soldiers are subjected to more research while serving to alleviate the psychological effects of war.

Moreno explains: “The problem is: what else are they blocking when they do this? Do we want a generation of veterans who return without guilt?”

Allan Snyder, professor of neuroscience in Australia, has been working to understand how transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can effect higher mental processing with the use of magnetic fields to promote unfettered reasoning.

The US Academy of Sciences reported in 2009 that they expected to be successful in using TMS against soldiers to “enhance [their] fighting capabilities.”

Moreno reveals that TMS helmets could be used in battlefields to expand a soldier’s technical expertise and become a more proficient marksman and master electronics used in training exercises.

MSM Glosses Over Irony of Global Warming Scientists Trapped in Antarctic Ice

Somewhere far, far to the south where it is summer, a group of global warming scientists are trapped in the antarctic ice. If you missed the irony of that situation, it is because much of the mainstream media has glossed over that rather inconvenient irony. As an example here is an Associated Press story that avoids mentioning the real mission of the scientists aboard the icebound Russian ship:

The Snow Dragon icebreaker came within 7 miles (11 kilometers) of the Russian ship MV Akademik Shokalskiy, which has been stuck since Christmas Eve, but had to retreat after the ice became too thick, said expedition spokesman Alvin Stone.

The Akademik Shokalskiy, which has been on a research expedition to Antarctica, got stuck Tuesday after a blizzard’s whipping winds pushed the sea ice around the ship, freezing it in place. The ship wasn’t in danger of sinking, and there are weeks’ worth of supplies for the 74 scientists, tourists and crew on board, but the vessel cannot move.

So what was the exact mission of these scientists? AP is rather vague about this reporting only:

The scientific team on board the research ship — which left New Zealand on Nov. 28 — had been recreating Australian explorer Douglas Mawson’s century-old voyage to Antarctica when it became trapped. They plan to continue their expedition after they are freed, expedition leader Chris Turney said.

Um, there is a bit more to the expedition than merely following in the footsteps of a century-old voyage. But what that mission really is, AP won’t say. If AP is vague about the mission’s purpose, Reuters provides even less information.

Since the MSM isn’t forthcoming as to the real purpose of those scientists traveling to Antarctica, we turn to Whats Up With That for more insight:

The expedition is being led by Chris Turney, “climate scientist”, who has “set up a carbon refining company called Carbonscape which has developed technology to fix carbon from the atmosphere and make a host of green bi-products, helping reduce greenhouse gas levels.” The purpose of the expedition is “to discover and communicate the environmental changes taking place in the south.”

It seems they found out what the “environmental changes taking place in the south.” are.

Finally, National Geographic bluntly states the mission purpose:

…The current crop of explorers are hoping to document some of the same data and compare them to Mawson’s numbers, “using the twist of modern technology,” Turney told National Geographic earlier this month.

As may be expected, global warming might play a role in this, he suggests, particularly with respect to melted ice in the East Antarctic.

Ah, so now we see why the MSM reluctance to flat out state why the scientists are in the Antarctic. Anything to avoid an inconvenient (but accurate) headline like this:

Oxford Scientists: Conjugated Linoleic Acids Kill Cancer Cells

beefy clas 263x164 Oxford Scientists: Conjugated Linoleic Acids Kill Cancer CellsNatural Society- by Christina Sarich

Numerous journals have reported that conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) have ‘anti-proliferative qualities’ for cancer cells. CLAs are dietary fatty acids, an Omega 6, that have both anti-mutagenic and anticarcinogenic qualities. For men with prostate cancer (currently the second most prevalent type of cancer in Western countries) this is great news. While scientists can’t figure out exactly why CLAs help to dissolve cancerous cells and keep them from multiplying, the news is still helpful and positive.

“The aims of this study were to examine the anti-proliferative effects of different concentrations of a commercial preparation of conjugated linoleic acids (CLA) mixture of isomers [cis-9, trans-11 CLA (c9,t11 CLA): trans-10, cis-12 CLA (50:50)] and their constituent isomers on PC-3, a human prostatic carcinoma cell line, and to study their effects on gene expression (mRNA and protein levels) of different enzymes and oncoproteins involved in oncogenesis and progression of prostate cancer.”

CLAs also stop estrogen signaling which can cause tumors to grow in breasts, causing lead to breast cancer.

“Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a mixture of positional and geometric isomers of linoleic acid found in dairy products and meat from ruminants, has been widely shown to possess anticarcinogenic activity against breast cancer both in vitro and in animal models…Taken together, these findings demonstrate that CLA compounds possess potent antiestrogenic properties that may at least partly account for their antitumor activity on breast cancer cells.”

Yet another study found that CLAs can help stop colon cancer by affecting protein kinase C (PKC) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kappaB) signaling pathways.

“Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) has anti-carcinogenic effects in a variety of cancers including colon cancer….In conclusion this study indicates that chronic CLA treatment inhibits DCA-induced PKC and NF-kappaB activation in colon cancer cells. These data suggest mechanisms by which CLA may influence the course of colonic cancer.”

CLAs can also lower high blood pressure, reduce bad cholesterol, and even regulate insulin in diabetics. It is sometimes also used to aid in weight loss since it helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and thus stop sweet cravings. Additionally, CLAs reduce food allergies in many people.

CLAs are normally found in dairy products, but there are other ways to consume them (since much of our dairy has been contaminated with hormones and antibiotics). Grass fed meat also contains CLAs (again, make sure you get the antibiotic and hormone-free, non-factory farm meat) as well as some vegetable oils and fortified eggs.

If you want to reduce your chance of multiple cancers, lose weight, regulate metabolism and more, you can start eating your cheese, yogurt, and other organic dairy products. They just might save your life.

‘Stop GMOs’: Russian scientists urge 10-year ban on genetically modified products

Published time: December 16, 2013 01:27

RIA Novosti / Egor Eremov

RIA Novosti / Egor Eremov

Russian scientists are calling for a 10-year moratorium on GMOs to thoroughly study their influence on human health, stressing that such examinations are vital.

“It is necessary to ban GMO, to impose moratorium [on it] for 10 years. While GMO will be prohibited, we can plan experiments, tests, or maybe even new methods of research could be developed,” vice president of Russia’s National Association for Genetic Safety, Irina Ermakova, told Interfax news agency.

According to her, there have not been enough sufficient studies on GMO influence on human health to allow for a wide introduction of genetically modified food on the market.

However, scientists say that most studies prove that such food comes along with dangerous side effects.

“It has been proved that not only in Russia, but also in many other countries in the world, GMO is dangerous. Methods of obtaining the GMO are not perfect, therefore, at this stage, all GMOs are dangerous,” Ermakova said.

She went on to explain that one of the techniques uses tumor-causing soil bacteria.

“Consumption and use of GMOs obtained in such way can lead to tumors, cancers and obesity among animals,” Ermakova said.

She added that doctors have seen a surge of diabetes and cancer in regions where residents have consumed larger amounts of GMO-containing food.

“Biotechnologies certainly should be developed, but GMO should be stopped. [We] should stop it from spreading,” Ermakova added.

In September, Russia endorsed the Rules for the State Registration of GMO and GMO-containing Products. The law enforces compulsory registration of all products containing GM components.

Also in September, Russian authorities temporarily suspended the import and sale of Monsanto’s genetically modified corn after a French study suggested it may be linked to cancer. Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev ordered regulatory agencies to consider a possible ban on all GMO imports into Russia.

Using Satellite, Scientists Pinpoint Coldest Place On Earth

Atsuhiro Muto/ National Snow and Ice Data Center

Using data from a NASA satellite, scientists at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) say they have now pinpointed the coldest place on Earth.

On a 1,000 kilometer swath of the highest section of the East Antarctic ice divide, scientists measured temperatures of -134 to -137 degrees Farenheit.

That is about 8 degrees lower than the coldest temperature ever recorded. The AP reports the old record — -128.6 degrees — was measured by thermometers in Vostok, Antartica, in 1983.

The AP reports:

“Ice scientist Ted Scambos at the National Snow and Ice Data Center said the new record is ’50 degrees colder than anything that has ever been seen in Alaska or Siberia or certainly North Dakota.’

“‘It’s more like you’d see on Mars on a nice summer day in the poles,’ Scambos said, from the American Geophysical Union scientific meeting in San Francisco Monday, where he announced the data. ‘I’m confident that these pockets are the coldest places on Earth.’

“However, it won’t be in the Guinness Book of World Records — or recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the official keepers of world weather records — because the readings were measured by satellites, not from thermometers, Scambos said.”

If you’re staring out a window and looking at some snow right now, you might be wondering just how different 20 degrees feels from -137 degrees. In a statement Scambos said: “I’ve never been in conditions that cold and I hope I never am. I am told that every breath is painful and you have to be extremely careful not to freeze part of your throat or lungs when inhaling.”

Scambos explains that conditions have to be just right to reach this extreme:

“Under clear winter skies in these areas, cold air forms near the snow surface. Because the cold air is denser than the air above it, it begins to move downhill. The air collects in the nearby hollows and chills still further, if conditions are favorable.

“‘The record-breaking conditions seem to happen when a wind pattern or an atmospheric pressure gradient tries to move the air back uphill, pushing against the air that was sliding down,’ Scambos said. ‘This allows the air in the low hollows to remain there longer and cool even further under the clear, extremely dry sky conditions,’ Scambos said. ‘When the cold air lingers in these pockets it reaches ultra-low temperatures.’”

NASA put together this video to give you an idea of where this place is and what the topography looks like:

Indias Nuclear Scientists Keep Dying---Mysteriously. Whos Behind It?

I read an article and have done some research on the mysterious and ongoing deaths of many of India’s nuclear scientists. People that work in the nuclear field in India have packed up and left the country out of fear, which gives you an idea of how serious an issue this is.

An article from the Vice website points out:

Not only has the scientific community been plagued by “suicides,” unexplained deaths, and sabotage, but those incidents have gone mostly underreported in the country—diluting public interest and leaving the cases quickly cast off by police.

The two most recent deaths of men from the nuclear research community:

Last month, two high-ranking engineers—KK Josh and Abhish Shivam—on India’s first nuclear-powered submarine were found on railway tracks by workers. They were pulled from the line before a train could crush them, but were already dead. No marks were found on the bodies, so it was clear they hadn’t been hit by a moving train, and reports allege they were poisoned elsewhere before being placed on the tracks to make the deaths look either accidental or like a suicide. The media and the Ministry of Defence, however, described the incident as a routine accident and didn’t investigate any further.

The exact number of deaths is not known, but has only been quoted as “a long list.”

Many of the deaths are ruled as suicides, and those that don’t seem to fit that bill are listed as “unexplained” and not investigated again. Several families have contested the cause of death, but don’t appear to have gotten very far.

Who could be behind the deaths, if they are, in fact, murders? According to one article:

Two authors have alleged that the US have dabbled in sabotaging the country’s technological efforts in the past; China is in a constant soft-power battle with India; and the volatile relationship with Pakistan makes the country a prime suspect. “It could be any of them,” Madhav said.

Since the US has had a spree of similar deaths in our research communities, I find this issue to be very concerning—-and suspicious.

Even more alarming is that India is doing nothing to protects its scientists.

And why have they refused to really research these deaths?

Scientists Clone "Unclonable" Tree

(Newser) – Big news in the world of horticulture—literally. Scientists have managed to successfully clone a genetic replica of a famed giant sequoia. Three reasons why this is a big deal: The 70-foot tree was planted by John Muir, who had a heavy hand in the founding of Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks; the tree is being ravaged by an airborne fungus; and critics didn’t think a tree of this species could be cloned after its 80th birthday, reports the Los Angeles Times. This tree is about 130 years old.

The credit for the feat goes to the Archangel Ancient Tree Archive, which has other feathers in its cap: It has also cloned trees planted by George Washington at Mount Vernon. The clone was born in a Michigan lab from one of two dozen cuttings from the tree, which were divided into much smaller pieces and subjected to what Archangel’s co-founder describes to Michigan Radio as a “hormone cocktail.” Roots have formed, indicating that the cloning worked; the clone needs to grow to a foot-and-a-half in height before it can leave the lab. Once that happens, it’ll be put in the ground at Muir’s San Francisco-area homestead, hopefully within a year. (Another famed tree that will live on: the one Anne Frank watched from the Secret Annex.)

Hundreds of sea turtles are washing up dead on the beaches of Central America and scientists don’t know why.

One hypothesis is that the killer is a potent neurotoxin that can be produced by algae during red tides, which are large accumulations of algae that turn sea water red or brown.

The puzzling thing, though, is that red tides have come and gone before without taking such a deadly toll on turtles.

Scientists liken certainty of global warming to deadliness of smoking

Seth Borenstein, The Associated Press
Published Tuesday, September 24, 2013 3:40PM EDT
Last Updated Tuesday, September 24, 2013 5:31PM EDT

WASHINGTON — Top scientists from a variety of fields say they are about as certain that global warming is a real, man-made threat as they are that cigarettes kill.

They are as sure about climate change as they are about the age of the universe. They say they are more certain about climate change than they are that vitamins make you healthy or that dioxin in Superfund sites is dangerous.

They’ll even put a number on how certain they are about climate change. But that number isn’t 100 per cent. It’s 95 per cent.

And for some non-scientists, that’s just not good enough.

There’s a mismatch between what scientists say about how certain they are and what the general public thinks the experts mean, experts say.

That is an issue because this week, scientists from around the world have gathered in Stockholm for a meeting of a U.N. panel on climate change, and they will probably issue a report saying it is “extremely likely” — which they define in footnotes as 95 per cent certain — that humans are mostly to blame for temperatures that have climbed since 1951.

One climate scientist involved says the panel may even boost it in some places to “virtually certain” and 99 per cent.

Some climate-change deniers have looked at 95 per cent and scoffed. After all, most people wouldn’t get on a plane that had only a 95 per cent certainty of landing safely, risk experts say.

But in science, 95 per cent certainty is often considered the gold standard for certainty.

“Uncertainty is inherent in every scientific judgment,” said Johns Hopkins University epidemiologist Thomas Burke. “Will the sun come up in the morning?” Scientists know the answer is yes, but they can’t really say so with 100 per cent certainty because there are so many factors out there that are not quite understood or under control.

George Gray, director of the Center for Risk Science and Public Health at George Washington University, said that demanding absolute proof on things such as climate doesn’t make sense.

“There’s a group of people who seem to think that when scientists say they are uncertain, we shouldn’t do anything,” said Gray, who was chief scientist for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency during the George W. Bush administration. “That’s crazy. We’re uncertain and we buy insurance.”

With the U.N. panel about to weigh in on the effects of greenhouse gas emissions from the burning of oil, coal and gas, The Associated Press asked scientists who specialize in climate, physics, epidemiology, public health, statistics and risk just what in science is more certain than human-caused climate change, what is about the same, and what is less.

They said gravity is a good example of something more certain than climate change. Climate change “is not as sure as if you drop a stone it will hit the Earth,” Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer said. “It’s not certain, but it’s close.”

Arizona State University physicist Lawrence Krauss said the 95 per cent quoted for climate change is equivalent to the current certainty among physicists that the universe is 13.8 billion years old.

The president of the prestigious National Academy of Sciences, Ralph Cicerone, and more than a dozen other scientists contacted by the AP said the 95 per cent certainty regarding climate change is most similar to the confidence scientists have in the decades’ worth of evidence that cigarettes are deadly.

“What is understood does not violate any mechanism that we understand about cancer,” while “statistics confirm what we know about cancer,” said Cicerone, an atmospheric scientist. Add to that a “very high consensus” among scientists about the harm of tobacco, and it sounds similar to the case for climate change, he said.

But even the best study can be nitpicked because nothing is perfect, and that’s the strategy of both tobacco defenders and climate deniers, said Stanton Glantz, a medicine professor at the University of California, San Francisco and director of its tobacco control research centre.

George Washington’s Gray said the 95 per cent number the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will probably adopt may not be realistic. In general, regardless of the field of research, experts tend to overestimate their confidence in their certainty, he said. Other experts said the 95 per cent figure is too low.

Jeff Severinghaus, a geoscientist at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, said that through the use of radioactive isotopes, scientists are more than 99 per cent sure that much of the carbon in the air has human fingerprints on it. And because of basic physics, scientists are 99 per cent certain that carbon traps heat in what is called the greenhouse effect.

But the role of nature and all sorts of other factors bring the number down to 95 per cent when you want to say that the majority of the warming is human-caused, he said.

Frightened residents in a Montana town have been recently pointing out that hundreds of deer are mysteriously dying in their area.

Montana wildlife officials reported that more than 100 dead white-tailed deer have been seen in the west Missoula Valley.

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks officials say they are waiting for lab results to come back so they can try to determine what’s caused the deaths, according to krtv.

“The deer may show no outward symptoms of disease,” said Vickie Edwards, FWP wildlife biologist in Missoula. “People are seeing healthy looking deer fall over dead.”

Scientists are currently speculating that these deaths are the result of a disease called Epizootic hemorrhagic disease.

“Hemorrhagic disease viruses are not contagious from one animal to another and are not transmissible to humans,” said Jennifer Ramsey, FWP Wildlife Veterinarian in Bozeman. “Transmission is only known to occur through the bite of the gnat.”

The disease poses no threat to humans. Anyone who sees dead or sick deer in the Missoula area is asked to call FWP at 542-5515 with observations and locations.

Global warming? No, actually we’re cooling, claim scientists

Hayley Dixon
London Telegraph
September 8, 2013

A cold Arctic summer has led to a record increase in the ice cap, leading experts to predict a period of global cooling.

There has been a 60 per cent increase in the amount of ocean covered with ice compared to this time last year, they equivalent of almost a million square miles.

In a rebound from 2012′s record low an unbroken ice sheet more than half the size of Europe already stretches from the Canadian islands to Russia’s northern shores, days before the annual re-freeze is even set to begin.

The Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific has remained blocked by pack-ice all year, forcing some ships to change their routes.

EMF exposures destroy health and well-being, claims panel of top international scientists

Lloyd Burrell
Natural News
August 11, 2013

Nearly 8 million people worldwide die from cancer on an annual basis. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, killing almost 17 million people in 2011; both of these statistics are spiraling out of control. Now three top scientists, Dr. Panagopoulos of the University of Athens , Associate Prof. Johansson of the Karolinska Institute, and Dr. Carlo of theScience and Public Policy Institute, are sounding the alarm bell.

Leaders in their respective fields, Panagopoulos, Johansson, and Carlo, claim electromagnetic field (EMF) exposures significantly below international safety levels exposures are destroying the public’s health and well-being.

Recent study findings

This latest study concluded the present standard of measuring EMFs, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), to be totally inappropriate. SAR measures the heating effect of EMF based technologies like microwave ovens, cell phones, cordless phones, Wi-Fi and the like. But countless studies have brought to light adverse biological effects at radiation levels significantly below levels where a thermal effect is detected.

Dr. Carlo points out the life-threatening consequences of using SAR as an exposure metric in establishing the outcomes of EMF studies:

• “Studies which show ‘no effect’ are likely “false negatives.”
• “Studies that show an effect are likely under-reporting the true risk.”

He goes on to say “this imprecision….shakes the foundation of the science that we are using to sort out the full range of non-ionizing radiation health effects.”

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

10 human bodies

At this point the real debate is moving beyond whether or not EMFs harm health and threaten public safety. Even the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified EMF exposure as a possible carcinogen (Group 2B carcinogen). This new research paper elaborates on just how strong these EMFs can be: “For waves emitted by a supposed unidirectional antenna it takes about 10 human bodies in sequence in order to be totally absorbed.”

Like other pioneers in the field of scientific research Dr. Carlo’s, Professor Johansson’s, and Dr. Panagopoulos’s innovative work has been scoffed at by many of their academic peers. Needless to say, their scientific evidence remains unassailable. The researchers stand 100% behind their life altering conclusions.

Scientific database on EMF research unreliable

Much EMF research is skewed by funding and research bias. A prime example of how funding influences research findings is demonstrated by a 2005 meta-analysis on cell phone studies. When comparing research findings and sources of funding, the findings were clear. The majority of industry funded studies found cell phone users had a lower risk of brain tumors; while non-industry funded studies found users had an increased risk.

EMFs not only affect cell phone users, but pretty much anyone else living in this technological age, the young, the old, and everyone else in their path. This exposure results in increased risks not only for leukemia and AD, but reproductive issues, behavioral issues, autism, neurological effects, DNA changes, certain types of cancer, and changes in the blood-brain barrier.

Basic EMF protection

Reducing personal exposure to EMFs is a fairly easy endeavor. Basic EMF protection can be achieved by:

• Texting instead of talking with cell phones
• Setting cell phones on airplane mode when not in use
• Clearing the bedroom of electrical devices
• Replacing Wi-Fi with a hard-wired connection

Taking these simple steps is well worth the effort; the power to reduce EMF exposure and the adverse health effects that stem from them are truly right there at your fingertips.

Scientists Say Men and Women Process Risk Differently

imagesI can’t wait to see how the men and women in our comment section “process” these findings.

Via Scientific American:

Researchers use gambling games to understand what we do when immediate rewards are pitted against long-term gains. Most of these games find no major differences in how men and women play. An experimental setup called the Iowa Gambling Task (IGT), however, finds consistent—and large—differences between the behavior of men and women: men are better at figuring out the strategy that reaps the bigger payoff.

Scientists confirm: Pesticides kill America’s honey bees

Reuters / Stephane MaheRT

Honey bees are quickly disappearing from the US – a phenomenon that has left scientists baffled. But new research shows that bees exposed to common agricultural chemicals while pollinating US crops are less likely to resist a parasitic infection.

As a result of chemical exposure, honey bees are more likely to succumb to the lethal Nosema ceranae parasite and die from the resulting complications.

Scientists from the University of Maryland and the US Department of Agriculture on Wednesday published a study that linked chemicals, including fungicides, to the mass die-offs. Scientists have long struggled to find the cause behind the Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD), in which an estimated 10 million beehives at an average value of $ 200 each have been lost since 2006.

Last winter, the honey bee population declined by 31.1 percent, with some beekeepers reporting losses of 90 to 100 percent of their bee populations. Scientists are concerned that “Beemageddon” could cause the collapse of the $ 200 billion agriculture industry, since more than 100 US crops rely on honey bees to pollinate them.

The new findings are key in determining one of the causes of the CCD, but they fail to explain why entire beehives sometimes die at once.

UMD and DOA researchers found that pollen samples in fields ranging from Delaware to Maine contained nine different agricultural chemicals, including fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and miticides. One particular sample even contained 21 different agricultural chemicals. To test their theory, they fed pesticide-ridden pollen samples to healthy bees and then infected them with the parasite. They found that the pesticides hindered the bees’ abilities to resist the infection, thus contributing to their deaths. The fungicide chlorothalonil was particularly damaging, tripling the risks of parasitic infection.

“We don’t think of fungicides as having a negative effect on bees, because they’re not designed to kill insects,” Dennis vanEngelsdorp, the study’s senior author, said in a news release.

He explained that federal regulations restrict the use of insecticides while pollinators are foraging, but noted that “there are no such restrictions on fungicides, so you’ll often see fungicide applications going on while bees are foraging on the crop. The finding suggests that we have to reconsider that policy.”

Bees are declining at such a fast rate that one bad winter could trigger an agricultural disaster. California’s almond crop would be hit particularly hard, since the state supplies 80 percent of the world’s almonds. Pollinating California’s 760,000 acres of almond fields requires 1.5 million out-of-state bee colonies, which makes up 60 percent of the country’s beehives. The CCD is a major threat to this $ 4 billion industry.

Entomologists suspect that a number of other factors also contribute to the CCD, including climate change, habitat destructing and handling practices that expose bees to foreign pathogens. But the effect of agricultural chemicals is particularly alarming, especially since the US does not have laws banning the use of the pesticides that are affecting bee health.

“The pesticide issue in itself is much more complex than we have led to believe,” vanEngelsdorp said. “It’s a lot more complicated than just one product, which means of course the solution does not lie in just banning one class of product.”
