Financial Mail on Sunday – Midas

Revolymer, a pioneering company based a few miles from Chester, has developed a way to make nicotine gum just as effective but a lot more palatable. The group uses novel compounds that not only make gum softer and smoother, but also provide a fresh smell on the breath and clean the teeth.

The company received a major breakthrough last summer when a major Canadian retailer agreed to stock its nicotine gum. First shipments began at the end of last year and further supplies will be sent over the coming months and beyond. Revolymer has also signed a distribution agreement for its gum in eastern Europe and that should yield firm sales in the near future.

Talks are ongoing with businesses in the UK, too, and there are hopes that the gum will be in supermarkets in the next year or two.

Revolymer is loss-making at the moment and, as a relatively small, innovative business, the shares are not for the  cautious.

But the group has signed two big deals in recent months and more are expected in the short-term. At 72.5p, the shares could deliver substantial rewards to the adventurous.

Stanley Gibbons

Stamp collecting is usually associated with little boys or elderly men. But for rich individuals looking for something different to do with their money, stamps are more than just a collector’s item, they are an investment.

Stanley Gibbons is one of the best-known stamp specialists in the world, with about three million items on its books. In November, the group acquired coin business Noble Investments, which owns about a million coins. The combined group has ambitious growth plans and the shares, currently 366p, should provide strong long-term growth.

Stanley Gibbons has traditionally made most of its money from buying and selling stamps and from large auctions. Noble has followed the same path, but with coins. Now Hall is upgrading the group website, adding more stock and allowing third parties to buy and sell stamps and coins on it, from which the firm will get a commission.

Stanley Gibbons is a strong business, fortified by Noble. Both Hall and Goldbart are keen to deliver shareholder growth and there is a progressive dividend policy, too. New investors should buy. Noble investors should hold on to their Gibbons shares.

N Brown

N Brown began life as a catalogue clothes retailer targeting older and larger shoppers, but the owner of the Jacamo and Simply Be brands was an early and successful adopter of an internet sales platform.

This has allowed a steady increase in revenue, profits and dividends to shareholders over the past five years. The retailer has now successfully launched a high street presence, which is to be expanded with the company recently beginning a nationwide search for 20 new locations.

The group hopes to raise brand awareness while also offering a location for customers to click and collect – an increasingly popular way of shopping.

Its seven more established stores reported like-for-like revenue growth of 34 per cent in the latest trading statement last week. Shares have more than doubled in value during the past two years.

But they now trade on 19 times forecast earnings, falling to 18 times next year – which looks expensive given revenue growth of about 5 per cent and pre-tax profit growth of 8 per cent. The shares also offer a 2.6 per cent dividend yield, expected to grow by about 8 per cent this year and next.

The company has an exciting high street expansion plan in place and is definitely worth watching but no better than a hold at these levels.

Amazon.com to offer Sunday delivery in the US through US Postal Service

IDG News Service – Amazon.com is getting the U.S. Postal Service to deliver packages on Sundays to its customers, adding an additional facility
to help it compete in the Internet retail market.

The Sunday delivery will start in Los Angeles and New York, with plans to roll out the service to “a large portion” of the
U.S. population by 2014, Amazon said Monday. Sunday delivery will come to Houston, Dallas, New Orleans and Phoenix among other
places, the company said.

The service is free for Amazon’s Prime members, who pay US$ 79 per year for unlimited two-day shipping and other facilities,
Amazon said. Customers will see the Sunday delivery option at checkout when available, it added.

Not all products will be eligible for Sunday delivery, but the service already covers millions of items, Amazon said.

Financial details about the deal with the U.S. Postal Service were not disclosed. Amazon did not immediately respond to a
request for comment.

To get items to customers quicker, Amazon has expanded its delivery before. In 2009, for instance, it started a same-day delivery service dubbed Local Express Delivery for seven U.S. cities and has expanded that service to four more areas since then.

The service is currently available in New York, Las Vegas, Chicago, Washington D.C. and other locations.

Other companies followed. Same-day delivery was introduced by eBay in 2012. The company currently offers delivery in about
an hour from certain local stores in Chicago, New York and San Francisco areas.

Google is also interested in offering same-day delivery to its customers. In March, the search giant started a pilot called Google Shopping Express to serve San Francisco Bay Area residents.

Thomas Bishop: SNAP Cuts Disappear From Network Sunday Show Coverage

The four major network Sunday news programs failed to report on the newly enacted decrease in food stamp benefits, which affects more than 47 million Americans.

On November 1, USDA reported that “Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients will see their monthly benefits decrease” after the expiration of benefit increases enacted in the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA).  But Fox News Sunday, NBC’s Meet The Press, ABC’s This Week, and CBS’ Face the Nation all failed to bring up the issue on the November 3 editions of their respective shows.

Writing at Salon, former Labor Secretary Robert Reich explained: ”As of November 1 more than 47 million Americans have lost some or all of their food stamp benefits.” He added that “Half of all children get food stamps at some point during their childhood.” CBS News reported that the SNAP benefit cuts would shrink benefits for a family of four by as much as ”$ 432 over the course of a year.” The Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) highlighted how SNAP benefit cuts would affect hundreds of thousands of veterans:

Many veterans returning from service face challenges in finding work.  While the overall unemployment rate for veterans is lower than the national average, the unemployment rate for recent veterans (serving in September 2001 to the present) remains high, at 10.1 percent in September 2013.  About one-quarter of recent veterans reported service-connected disabilities in 2011, which can impact their ability to provide for their families:  households with a veteran with a disability that prevents them from working are about twice as likely to lack access to adequate food than households without a disabled member.

Veterans who participate in SNAP tend to be young, but their ages range widely:  57 percent of the veterans in our analysis are under age 30, while 9 percent are aged 60 or older.  They served during many conflicts, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, Vietnam, and in some cases, Korea and World War II, as well as in peacetime.

The media continues to ignore food stamp cuts that affect millions of Americans and negatively impact the economy.

Deadly Sunday: At least 18 killed in suicide bombings in Iraqi provinces

A spate of suicide bomb attacks on Iraqi security personnel and government buildings has claimed the lives of at least 18 people and left dozens injured, local police said.

In Iraq’s western province of Anbar, 12 people were killed and 27 wounded in what appeared to be attacks carried out by coordinated strikes, bombers and cars packed with explosives.

Multiple suicide attacks hit the town of Rawa, some 260 km (160 miles) northwest of Baghdad, where police said the city council, a nearby police station and a security checkpoint were attacked.

At least five policemen were killed and 13 others wounded as a suicide bomber blew himself up outside the entrance of a police station, Xinhua news agency reported, citing a source in the provincial police.

Suicide bombers wearing police uniforms targeted the city council while a meeting was going on there, killing at least five officials, including the deputy chief, and wounding 10 others.

The third suicide bomber detonated his explosive vest at a nearby joint police and army checkpoint, killing two policemen and wounding four others including two soldiers.

Reuters, at the same time, reports that the mayor’s house was also attacked and the mayor was seriously wounded. Three others were killed, according to the report.

Other media reports suggest that up to 28 people were killed in Rawa on Sunday. However, no details have been given.

Following the attacks all entrances of the city were blocked and an indefinite curfew imposed.

No one claimed responsibility for the blasts, though Sunni Muslim insurgents are known to have been targeting members of the Shiite-led government.

Earlier on Sunday a suicide bomber also blew himself up near the house of a senior policeman, Nasser Dawood, on the southern outskirts of Samarra province, 100 km north of Baghdad.

At least six people, all relatives of the police officer, were killed.

According Reuters, which cites police sources, the bomber drove up to a group of people who had gathered there because earlier a smaller explosion had taken place to the senior officer’s house.

Iraq has recently seen the deadliest outburst of violence to take place in the country since 2008. Thursday, October 17, has become the deadliest day in Iraq in the past few weeks with over 50 killed in one day. Prior to that, a suicide bombing left at least 75 people dead. As for today, some conflicting reports say the total death toll has reached 35 people.

Over 400 people have been killed in October so far, and over 5,000 have died since the beginning of the year, according to AFP figures.
