Revolt Against Western Banker Takeover of Ukraine Grows

Russian Mayor installed in Sevastopol as backlash intensifies

Russian-speaking Ukrainians in Crimea are resisting the western banker takeover of their country by installing a Russian Mayor in the town of Sevastopol as part of an emerging revolt against the US-backed coup d’état that saw the overthrow of democratically elected President Viktor Yanukovych.

“Sevastopol’s city council handed power to Aleksei Chaliy, a Russian citizen, during an extraordinary session on Monday evening while more than a thousand protesters gathered around city hall chanting “Russia, Russia, Russia,” and “A Russian mayor for a Russian city,” reports the Guardian. Former incumbent Vladimir Yatsuba resigned in order to allow Chaliy to take power.

The Russian military has also moved to secure the city against opposition militants by positioning armored personnel carriers in the town’s main square. Yesterday, it was reported that the Russian landing ship Nikolai Filchenko was on its way to Sevastopol with a contingent of 200 armed Russian soldiers.

“The day’s events marked the first stages in the establishment of an anti-Kiev administration amid tumultuous development that will cause headaches for the group of politicians that have replaced the administration of ousted fugitive President Viktor Yanukovych,” reports RIA Novosti.

Meanwhile, in an effort to afford the coup some kind of legitimacy, the Ukrainian parliament voted in favor of trying Yanukovych before the International Criminal Court, a development that came shortly after it was revealed that secretive British investigators are combing central Kiev for evidence that government snipers were used to massacre demonstrators.

While it’s admitted that both sides used firearms during the clashes, the clandestine nature of the investigation suggests that it is merely meant to be a rubber stamp for implicating Yanukovych as being responsible for a massacre.

Indeed, before the investigation even properly began, once of its anonymous members, who spoke to the BBC with his face blurred, had already concluded that the government was responsible for a “bloodbath”.

“The investigators – who do not wish to be identified – say they have already pinpointed four sniper positions, states the report. “The Foreign Office declined to comment on whether the UK government was assisting in the investigation.”

In other words, the British Foreign Office already has its agents in Kiev either manufacturing or planting evidence which will subsequently be used to demonize Yanukovych as a barbarian who ordered the massacre of protesters.

The fact that innumerable images show “protesters” also carrying guns is likely to be overlooked because that doesn’t fit the narrative of an organic and righteous uprising which in fact more closely resembles an externally-backed violent coup.

Optimism grows ahead of Obama"s next Hill meeting

President Barack Obama will cap a two-day period of intense outreach to Congress, meeting with the Senate Republican Conference late Friday morning on day 11 of the government shutdown and less than a week before a potential default.

The gathering with more than 40 GOP senators is the culmination of talks between the White House and each major Capitol Hill faction on how to reopen government and evade a debt crisis. On Thursday afternoon Obama met with House Republican leaders and committee chairmen who want to raise the debt ceiling for six weeks and then open the government. During that meeting, the president asked the House GOP “what’s it going to take to” open up the government.

Obama’s meeting with House Republicans ended without agreement on a deal. But for the first time, senior aides, lawmakers — and even staunch conservatives — feel an agreement is possible.

House Republicans and the White House worked through the evening to craft an accord to lift the debt ceiling and jump-start fiscal talks. The House Republicans sent a proposal to Obama at 10 last night and as of Friday morning they were waiting for a response.

At issue is putting in place a framework for six weeks of budget talks. If Obama and House Republicans could find common ground on what those talks would look like and what they would achieve, it would increase the likelihood of an expedient lifting of the debt ceiling and re-opening government.

Right now, House Republicans want to fund the government through Dec. 15, and lift the debt ceiling through Nov. 22. That would open two tracks for negotiations. Appropriations negotiators would develop 2014 funding levels. And then broader fiscal talks – spearheaded by Budget Chairman Paul Ryan, Ways and Means Chairman Dave Camp and GOP leadership – would proceed alongside the debt ceiling timeline.

In the meantime, Obama will meet Friday morning with GOP senators who have been sketching out their own rough framework for lifting the debt ceiling and reopening the government. The president has long been trying to woo Republican senators, holding open-ended budget talks throughout the year, though those discussions were broken off in August over a lack of progress.

The open-ended talks by a group of Senate Republicans and several influential Democrats are based off the work of Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and have been encouraged by Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). But several of the ideas would affect portions of Obamacare, like repealing the medical device tax, verifying income for Obamacare subsides and changing the Independent Payment Advisory Board. Though those ideas do not attack the heart of the health care law like past efforts of House Republicans, they still may turn off the president and Senate Democrats who have emphasized Obamacare will not be part of debt ceiling and government funding talks.

Obama will also come face to face on Friday with conservative senators like Ted Cruz of Texas, who led the charge for the Republicans to try to defund Obamacare as part of a spending bill.

Senate Democrats are still heading toward a Saturday vote on a clean raise to the debt ceiling into 2015, which needs the support of six Republicans to advance and is widely expected to fail.

‘Dutch sandwich’ grows as Google shifts €8.8 billion to Bermuda

Source: CNBC

Google funneled €8.8 billion ($ 12 billion) of royalty payments to Bermuda last year, a quarter more than in 2011, underlining the rapid expansion of a strategy that has saved the U.S. internet group billions of dollars in tax.

By routing royalty payments to Bermuda, Google reduces its overseas tax rate to about five percent, less than half the rate in already low-tax Ireland, where it books most of its international sales.

The figures were revealed in the latest filings by one of Google’s Dutch subsidiaries, and means that royalty payments made to Bermuda – where the company holds its non-U.S. intellectual property – have doubled over the past three years. This increase reflects the rapid growth of Google’s global business.

The company has been at the center of the international controversy over corporate tax avoidance because it earns “substantially all” its foreign income in Ireland and pays relatively little tax in the countries where its customers are based.

On Fifth Anniversary Of Fiscal Crisis, The Economy Grows Worse

Honey I Shrunk The Economy SC On fifth anniversary of fiscal crisis, the economy grows worse

Black unemployment spike to 13 percent.

Labor force participation rate plunges to 35-year low.

Hispanic unemployment higher now than in April.

WASHINGTON – On the fifth anniversary of the current fiscal crisis, the nation’s economy is getting worse under Barack Obama, according to an objective mathematical measurement of the nation’s economic indicators released Monday by Congressman Steve Stockman (R-Texas 36.)

The economy continues to fail to recover under Obama as Obama’s Failometer Score grew to a punishing 1,222 last month. This is the third straight month Obama’s Failometer score has grown, and his 1,222 for August is the second-highest score this year.

Obama can set the Failometer to zero simply by outperforming George W. Bush on the economy and fulfilling his 2008 and 2012 campaign promises to help blacks and Hispanics gain economically.

“For the third consecutive month Obama’s economic failures are getting worse,” said Stockman “The percentage of working-age American with jobs has plunged to Jimmy Carter-era depths, we aren’t creating enough jobs to restore the economy and black unemployment is growing again.”

“Hispanic unemployment is higher now than it was in April.  Black unemployment is growing again. He has yet to grow enough monthly jobs to even get back to a pre-recession economy. An objective mathematical measure of Obama’s economic policies shows he’s blazing a new path of failure.”

The Obama Failometer uses a fixed mathematical score to calculate four economic indicators from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The figures from the monthly reports are weighted to provide a balanced total score, which ranges from zero to 1,000. A score of 0 represent economic stability and racial equality. The higher the score, the deeper the economic failure.

So far, Obama is worse than Bush.

Since its creation, Obama has failed to generate a Failometer score that can be contained within the chart’s range of zero to 1000.

The Obama Failometer Score was originally displayed on a ten-foot-long billboard displayed in the hallways of the Capitol’s Cannon House Office building.  House officials ordered it torn down in January after Democrats complained.

Here is how the Obama Failometer Score is calculated:

FACTORS MEASURED AGAINST BUSH

Monthly jobs created: The Hamilton Project, a liberal economic policy group, stated last year the economy must create 321,000 jobs a month in order to return the economy to pre-recession employment levels by December 2016, the end of Obama’s term.

As the economy continues to flounder under Obama, that number has grown; but the Obama Failometer will continue to use it, which gives him some statistical relief.

Obama promised to not only restore the economy to where it was under Bush, but grow it.  So far, Obama has failed to even perform as well as Bush.

This Obama Failometer score portion is calculated by subtracting the number of jobs created in the previous month from the 321,000 jobs claimed necessary by the liberal Hamilton Project and dividing by 1,000 to balance it against other factors.

The BLS reports the economy created 169,000 jobs last month, 152,000 fewer than needed to restore the economy.  This portion of the Obama Failometer Score is 152.

Civilian labor force participation rate:  The civilian labor force participation rate, the ratio between those 16 and over in the labor force against the national population of those 16 and over, is an important measure of economic health.  After puttering along during the Bush administration, including through the “Bush years” of the recession, under Obama, it has plunged sharply.

This Obama Failometer score portion is calculated by subtracting the monthly civilian labor force participation rate from the average Bush administration rate and multiplying by 100 to balance it against other factors. According to data from the BLS, under Bush, the average monthly civilian labor force participation rate was around 66.2 percent.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the monthly civilian labor force participation rate last month fell to 63.2 percent, the worst rate since August 1978 and 3.0 percent worse than Bush’s average of 66.2 percent.  This portion of the Obama Failometer Score is 300.

FACTORS MEASURED AGAINST OBAMA’S OWN RHETORIC

Black unemployment:  No one has suffered more economically under Obama than black Americans. Obama’s election and re-election has meant crippling poverty for the black community.

This Obama Failometer score portion is calculated by taking the monthly unemployment rate for blacks and subtracting the monthly unemployment rate for all Americans, and multiplying it by 100 to balance it against other factors.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the black unemployment rate last month ballooned to 13.0 percent, while the national overall rate was 7.3 percent.  That is a gap of 5.7 percent. This portion of the Obama Failometer Score is 570.

Compare Obama’s performance to Bush’s.  The highest monthly unemployment rate ever for blacks under Bush was 12.1 percent.  Obama’s lowest rate is now 12.6 percent in July.  He has never performed as well as Bush’s worst black unemployment rate.

Bush’s average black unemployment rate was 9.7 percent and an overall national average of 5.2 percent, a 4.5 percent gap that gives Bush a score of 450.

Hispanic unemployment:  Despite winning the Hispanic vote, Obama’s liberal policies have caused widespread damage to the Hispanic community.  Thanks to Obama, they continue to lag behind the national average in many economic factors.

This Obama Failometer score portion is calculated by taking the monthly unemployment rate for Hispanics and subtracting the monthly unemployment rate for all Americans, and multiplying it by 100 to balance it against other factors.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the Hispanic unemployment rate last month grew to a stunning 9.3 percent, while the national overall rate was 7.3 percent.  That is a gap of two percent.  This portion of the Obama Failometer Score is 200.

The Hispanic unemployment rate hit its all-time historic low of 4.7 percent during Bush’s last term.  It is almost twice that rate under Obama.

THEREFORE, THIS MONTH’S OBAMA FAILOMETER SCORE IS 1,222.

The rights guaranteed by the constitution are being trampled on some more by the public who will not stand up yet and demand their return.

At the Sanger Oaks apartments and other apartment communities in Waco Texas, police officers are participating in a nazi-like ‘Crime Free Housing’ program, where they search apartments, check safety features to make their presence seem necessary, and trample people’s rights while carefully making it seem as if they are doing someone a service. It seems clear that everywhere in the US, the police, agencies of government, DHS, DOJ, DOD, CIA, all of those unnecessary gangs, will expand their powers more and more. It is getting way out of hand.

The constitution might as well be dead at this point, IF people keep being this lazy. The truth is, we will be left with no rights, and these people with badges will do whatever they wish. Those with badges who claim power given to them by the most intense criminals, the government, congress, the president. Of course, above them, the wealthiest people and the true rulers reign, and the politicians serve as an enforcement mechanism now, for the interests of the corporate elite, and other people who are arguably in control.

To really see the big picture, i am now talking about the entire situation Americans like me are in now, past this one instance of our right to privacy being trampled. Every communication we send is being recorded and analyzed. All of us are being treated like criminals, and the police state is going after people who use substances, don’t have ‘state licenses’, and do not commit ‘crimes’ with victims. Not only that, but they are going after peaceful people, with militarized force and equipment.

Make no mistake- they are at war with us. With the citizens, with peaceful people, with whoever gets in their way. And their way, is the path to dominating everything, robbing everyone of money through the federal reserve’s system of inflation and the taxes, destroying prosperity in any instance when it benefits them.

We are at war, and i know personally i will be stepping up my game to wake people up, and make everyone understand that we must stand up for our rights, or everything we have will be taken. That is the struggle of a human being. If we want our rights to be restored peacefully, we must wake people up to the truth. If we wait, the government is sure to turn this violent. I want peace, and the citizens want peace. We just want our humanity.

I know you have felt some pain or misfortune because of them. The reason you pay so much for the things you need to survive, the reason you are forced at gunpoint to pay property taxes, the reason we cannot just be at peace. This is our struggle, the citizens should unite and understand that now, we must work together. Wake people up, that is what you must do. Let everyone understand we have to refuse things like random apartment searches, inspections, checkpoints. Do you know what the gestapo were like in Nazi Germany? We are so very close to that level of tyranny.

As al-Qaida grows, leaders remain a global threat

WASHINGTON (AP) — Far from being on the brink of collapse, al-Qaida’s core leadership remains a potent threat — and one that experts say has encouraged the terror network’s spread into more countries today than it was operating in immediately after 9/11.

President Barack Obama, who ordered the May 2011 raid that killed Osama bin Laden, has described al-Qaida’s headquarters as “a shadow of its former self.” White House spokesman Jay Carney on Tuesday called it “severely diminished” and “decimated.”

The bravado, however, didn’t match the Obama administration’s action this week. It closed 19 U.S. diplomatic outposts stretching across the Eastern Hemisphere and evacuated nonessential personnel from the U.S. Embassy in Yemen after intelligence officials said they had intercepted a recent message from al-Qaida’s top leader about plans for a major terror attack.

The new communique came from bin Laden’s replacement, Ayman al-Zawahri, who as early as December 2001 announced plans to decentralize the network and scatter its affiliates across the globe as a way of ensuring its survival.

Now, major al-Qaida hubs are thriving along the Iraqi-Syrian border, in North Africa and, in the most serious risk to the U.S., in Yemen.

The regional hubs may not take direct orders from al-Zawahri, and terror experts say they rarely coordinate operations with each other or share funding and fighters. But they have promoted al-Qaida’s mission far beyond what its reach was a dozen years ago and, in turn, created an enduring legacy for its core leaders.

“Even while the core al-Qaida group may be in decline, al-Qaida-ism, the movement’s ideology, continues to resonate and attract new adherents,” Bruce Hoffman, director of the Security Studies Program at Georgetown University, wrote in a research paper earlier this year.

Bin Laden’s death, Hoffman wrote, “left behind a resilient movement that, although seriously weakened, has been expanding and consolidating its control in new and far-flung locales.”

Al-Zawahri, an Egyptian whose location is unknown, issues messages to followers every few months that are posted and circulated on jihadi websites. His latest, posted July 30, lashed out at Obama for the continued U.S. detention of terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and for launching deadly drone attacks in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Yemen and other Muslim countries.

“You fought us for 13 years. … Did we soften or toughen up? Did we back out or advance? Did we withdraw or spread out?” al-Zawahri asked Obama in his July 30 message, according to a transcript of his letter that was translated from Arabic by SITE Intelligence Group, which monitors jihadist websites.

He continued, “I call on every Muslim in every spot on Earth to seek with all that he can to stop the crimes of America and its allies against the Muslims — in Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen and Mali, and everywhere.”

Three days later, the State Department announced the temporary closing of U.S. embassies and diplomatic outposts across the Mideast, Africa and Asia — although not in Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel or Mali. Officials this week said the closures were prompted by an unspecified threat to U.S. and Western interests in a message from al-Zawahri to his top lieutenant in Yemen, where al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is based.

AQAP, as the terror network’s regional hub is known, is led by Nasser al-Wahishi, who for years was close to al-Zawahri and bin Laden, and is one of al-Qaida’s few remaining core leaders, said SITE director Rita Katz.

Intelligence officials say AQAP has for years announced its intent to attack the U.S., and is widely considered the biggest threat to the West of the al-Qaida affiliates. The group is linked to the botched Christmas Day 2009 bombing of an airliner bound for Detroit and explosives-laden parcels intercepted aboard cargo flights a year later.

Katz said AQAP may serve as the future al-Qaida headquarters, given that al-Zawahri and other core leaders pay attention to al-Wahishi. But she warned, “There will be a new leader in the future, and I doubt it will stay the same.”

For the most part, al-Qaida’s regional power centers have formed in places undergoing political upheaval, where security forces are too distracted by internal war or strife to clamp down on extremists.

The civil war in Syria, now in its third year, has given al-Qaida a huge boost and an opportunity to seize land that the Sunni-based network has long yearned to control. Having a leadership role in Syria would be a victory for al-Qaida given the country’s prominence in Muslim scripture, its proximity to other Arab states and the network’s hatred toward Alawites, an offshoot of Shiite Islam, who include Syrian President Bashar Assad.

More than 100,000 people have died in the Syrian war, which largely pits Sunni opposition forces and rebels against Assad’s Alawite regime, and has drawn fighters linked to al-Qaida. Many have come from neighboring Iraq, which itself is reeling from political instability.

Violence has risen steadily since the American military left Iraq in December 2011, fueled in part by Syrian cross-border militant traffic but also because of Baghdad’s inability to curb attacks.

July was the deadliest month in Iraq in years, with attacks killing more than 1,000 people and wounding at least 2,300, according to U.N. data. And coordinated jailbreaks at two high-security Iraqi prisons last month set free hundreds of inmates, including al-Qaida extremists. Iraq’s branch of al-Qaida, known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, claimed responsibility for the raids that it said were planned for months.

Kenneth Pollack, who oversaw Persian Gulf issues while on the White House National Security Council during the Clinton administration, said al-Qaida is poised to gain from instability across the Mideast — in part by using Iraq as a regional hub.

“Al-Qaida in Iraq is back. They were dead in 2010, dead as doornails, and now they are huge in Iraq,” Pollack said. “They have operations in Syria and they are a real movement in Syria.”

But the al-Qaida fighters in Iraq and Syria have shown little interest in attacking Americans beyond the region, Pollack said, and neither have most of those in northern Africa. There, in a region that spans across the Sahel and stretches from the Mediterranean Sea to Somalia, a spread of militants are calling themselves al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb.

AQIM is rooted in Algeria and affiliated with al-Zawahri, who in April warned French troops fighting extremists in Mali that they would face “the same fate America met in Iraq and Afghanistan” as long as they stayed. But there’s no evidence the North African groups receive direct orders from al-Zawahri, and most are as motivated by asserting local authority through criminal activity as by anti-Western ideology.

It’s believed that AQIM was linked to some of the militants behind last year’s attack on a diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, that killed Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans. And AQIM is suspected of driving overloaded trucks of rifles, mortars and other weapons from Libya to Mali and Niger to arm allies there.

Al-Zawahri also urged Muslims to join Somali militants in a message last November. The Somali-based militant group al-Shabab is loosely linked to al-Qaida, but some of its members have plotted attacks against the United States, where large pockets of Somalis have moved to escape famine and war over the last 20 years.

An inevitable part of al-Qaida’s growth is its new regional leadership — few of whom fought with bin Laden or have ever worked with al-Zawahri, Katz said. They may not all be driven by the same anti-American or anti-Western fervors that motivated bin Laden, but that makes them no less a global threat as the disparate groups mature.

“In the past, people wanted to go to Afghanistan; it was the dream of every possible jihadi on the front to go to Afghanistan to fight in al-Qaida training camps,” Katz said. “You don’t see that anymore. No one cares about what’s happening in Afghanistan.

“If anyone wants to go anywhere today it is, of course, Syria,” she said. “Going to Yemen is always a good thing for them; going to Somalia is less than it used to be, but it’s still another possibility. Things change all the time.”

Guantanamo Bay hunger strike grows; 41 now being force-fed

Peter Finn
Washington Post

The number of hunger strikers being force-fed by the U.S. military at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, has risen to 41, with the protest showing no signs of abating more than a week after President Obama renewed his commitment to close the detention facility.

The military said in a statement Thursday that 103 detainees are on hunger strike and that 41 of them are being force-fed. The military also said four detainees who are being force-fed are being observed at the hospital.

None of the hunger strikers has a life-threatening condition, said Lt. Col. Samuel House, a spokesman for Joint Task Force Guantanamo.

Nestlé Recall and Mafia Connections: 5 Things You Should Know As Horse Meat Scandal Grows

By now you’ve likely heard about the horse meat scandal that is rocking Europe. As far as food scandals go, this one is intriguing. Of course, this is not the first time we’ve learned that the meat we buy may not be everything we thought it was. Remember “pink slime”? The only good news here is that, so far, it doesn’t seem to be an imminent health threat, although it does raise some very alarming questions.

As food politics expert Marion Nestle wrote, “The unfolding drama around Europe’s horsemeat scandal is a case study in food politics and the politics of cultural identity. Cultural identity? They (other people) eat horsemeat. We don’t.”

As Nestle explains, “Most Americans say they won’t eat horsemeat, are appalled by the very idea, and oppose raising horses for food, selling their meat, and slaughtering horses for any reason.” Horse meat, however, is eaten in numerous countries around the world like China, Japan and Indonesia, as well as countries in Europe, including France and Switzerland.

It’s one thing to knowingly eat horse meat; it’s quite another to have it slipped into your food. This opens a pandora’s box of questions about the food we"re buying. For starters: What else is in there (donkey and pig, and the list may grow)? What does it reveal about food safety and our complex food chain? Who is responsible for duping consumers, and how did they get away with it?

It turns out there is a lot we can learn from Europe’s surplus of horse burgers.

1. The Mighty Fall

The most recent news surfacing today is that Nestlé, one of the largest food companies in the world, has now been entangled in the scandal. The New York Timesreports that Nestlé is pulling two products sold in Italy and Spain: Buitoni Beef Ravioli and Beef Tortellini, as well as Lasagnes à la Bolognaise Gourmandes sold to catering companies in France.

Nestlé is just the latest in the list of Europe’s top food companies involved. The story first broke in the UK and Ireland when major supermarket chains Tesco and Aldi were found to be selling beef products that contained horse meat. It spun from there. AdAge reports, “Burger King binned thousands of Whoppers and Angus Burgers, which were sourced from the same Irish beef supplier, Silvercrest, and Findus ‘beef’ lasagna was found to contain 100% horse meat.”

Silvercrest has been fingered, as well as Liffey Meats in Ireland and Dalepak in Yorkshire, accordingto Felicity Lawrence of the Guardian:

Silvercrest and Dalepak are both subsidiaries of ABP Food Group, one of the largest beef processors in Europe.”

… Huge blocks of frozen meat at a cold store in Northern Ireland, Freeza Foods, which had been quarantined by officials suspicious of its labelling and state of packaging, were found to contain 80% horse.

Other top food companies were implicated when the scandal hit France (more on that soon), but the presence of large food companies at the heart of the issue is troubling. While bigger companies are often able to offer products cheaper than small and local stores, some may be questioning if the savings are really worth it if consumers are getting duped. A look at the complex supply chain raises even more fears.

Lawrence writes:

Supermarket buyers and big brands have been driving down prices, seeking special offers on meat products as consumers cut back on their spending in the face of recession. The squeeze on prices has come at a time when manufacturers" costs have been soaring. Beef prices have been at record highs as has the price of grain needed to feed cattle. The cost of energy, heavily used in industrial processing and to fuel centralised distribution chains, has also soared. There has been a mistmatch between the cost of real beef and what companies are prepared to pay.

So, are we really shocked?

2. A Tangled Web

Horse meat has ended up in so-called beef products to varying degrees — some have been found to contain traces of horse DNA, which may have been the result of processing plants not properly cleaning equipment. And some products have been found to contain upward of 80 to 100 percent horse meat, which signals a much larger problem.

Getting to the bottom of how this came about has involved a lot of finger pointing. In Ireland, the ABP Food Group blamed supplies in Netherlands and Spain, and later Poland. “Five weeks into the scandal and the links in the Irish chain have still not been fully established,” writes the Guardian"s Lawrence.” But this gets even more interesting in France, as she explains:

Comigel had subcontracted its ready meal production to a factory in Luxembourg, Tavola. It was supplied with meat by a company called Spanghero. Spanghero had bought meat from a Dutch fraudster already convicted of passing horse off as beef, Jan Fasen.

The Dutch trader ran a company called Draap, which spelled backwards is paard or Dutch for horse. It was registered in Cyprus in 2008, with an offshore vehicle in the British Virgin Islands. It emerged during Fasen"s trial in Holland that he had supplied French companies with horsemeat imported from South America and Mexico fraudulently labelled as Dutch and German “beef” going back to 2007.

The horsemeat found in the recent tests on ready meals exported from France was said to have been sourced by Draap from Romania. The Romanian government has said its meat was legally exported correctly labeled as horse. The French government said Spanghero was the first agent to stamp the horse as beef; Spanghero has denied doing so deliberately. Fasen says Spanghero and French manufacturers were in on the deception from the beginning.

It turns out there may be a whole lot more criminal to this case.

3. Trouble in Romania

It just so happens that Romania may have an excess of dead horses on its hands. John Lichfield of the Independent reports that a change in traffic rules is to blame:

Horse-drawn carts were a common form of transport for centuries in Romania, but hundreds of thousands of the animals are feared to have been sent to the abattoir after the change in road rules.

The law, which was passed six years ago but only enforced recently, also banned carts drawn by donkeys, leading to speculation among food-industry officials in France that some of the “horse meat” which has turned up on supermarket shelves in Britain, France and Sweden may, in fact, turn out to be donkey meat. “Horses have been banned from Romanian roads and millions of animals have been sent to the slaughterhouse,” said Jose Bove, a veteran campaigner for small farmers who is now vice-president of the European Parliament agriculture committee.

While the explanation of where some of the horse meat could have come from is straightforward, how it got to dinner plates is not. As Lichfield explains, “It came from abattoirs in Romania through a dealer in Cyprus working through another dealer in Holland to a meat plant in the south of France which sold it to a French-owned factory in Luxembourg which made it into frozen meals sold in supermarkets in 16 countries.”

4. Blame the Mafia

From here, the story just gets weirder. Jamie Doward reports for the Observer that organized international gangs are suspected of involvement in the scandal. Doward writes:

Experts within the horse slaughter industry have told the Observer there is evidence that both Polish and Italian mafia gangs are running multimillion-pound scams to substitute horsemeat for beef during food production. There are claims that vets and other officials working within abattoirs and food production plants are intimidated into signing off meat as beef when it is in fact cheaper alternatives such as pork or horse. …

“I"m concerned that this is an international criminal conspiracy here and we"ve really got to get to the bottom of it,” [Britain’s environment secretary Owen Paterson] said.

5. Rethinking Our Food

So, we found out that beef products may contain horse, and also pig, and possibly donkey, as well. What to do with that information? For some people, it means buying less meat or from different sources. Reuters reported that 60 percent of people it surveyed in the UK said they were turning to local butchers for their meat and 25 percent said they would buy different cuts instead of processed meat.

AdAge reported that sales of frozen burgers dropped 40 percent in the beginning of February, while the meat-substitute Quorn saw a spike in sales of 10 percent. Emma Hall writes that, “More than two-thirds of British adults said they would be less likely to buy frozen meat products in the future.”

The biggest effect so far has been a drop in public trust. But after countless food safety scandals over the years, some of them deadly, why do we trust a system that’s needlessly complex?

“The food and retail industries have become highly concentrated and globalized in recent decades,” Lawrence writes for the Guardian:

“A handful of key players dominate the beef processing and supermarket sectors across Europe. They have developed very long supply chains, particularly for their economy lines, which enable them to buy the ingredients for processed foods from wherever they are cheapest at any point, depending on exchange rates and prices on the global commodity markets. Networks of brokers, cold stores operators and subcontracted meat cutting plants have emerged to supply rapidly fluctuating orders ‘just in time.’ Management consultants KPMG estimate there are around 450 points at which the integrity of the chain can break down.”

That’s worth repeating — there are 450 places where something could go wrong before your food gets into your hands.

If there was ever a reason to eat more locally produced food and to know where your food comes from and who grows and processes it, this would be a damn good one because this extends far beyond just meat products, and far beyond Europe.
