Total online sales rose year-on-year in December to £11.1bn, with mobiles and tablets used for nearly 6% of all retail sales

Mobile phones and tablet computers are now used for nearly 6% of all retail sales as Brits embrace shopping from the sofa, the train and under the duvet.

While total online sales rose 18% year-on-year in December to £11.1bn, according to the latest figures from e-tail industry body IMRG and advisory firm Capgemini, sales via mobile devices doubled to £3bn.

“Sales via mobiles will continue to rise in 2014, this is now mainstream,” said Chris Webster, head of retail at Capgemini. He said that the adoption of hand-held technology, as well as the development of click-and-collect” services, which enable shoppers to order online and then pick up their purchases at a convenient store, had accelerated the switch from the high street to online. “What we usually see when a market matures is that the rate of growth slows, but it is accelerating,” Webster said. IMRG is predicting that this year total online sales will rise by 17% to £107bn after rising 16% to £91bn last year.

Shoppers’ switching to the internet is already having a huge impact on traditional retailers who are having to invest millions of pounds in creating logistics networks and IT systems to cope with delivery of online orders while sales in stores fall back. Those retailers without a strong online presence, such as supermarket Morrisons, had a very poor Christmas.

But the switch to mobile shopping is causing other potentially longlasting changes. Retailers said easy-to-use and now cheap tablet computers such as Tesco’s Hudl were opening up online shopping to a much broader range of consumers, including the less well-off and older.

“Tablet computers are lowering the barriers to entry. People not comfortable with technology are comfortable with tablets which are more tactile,” said Andrew McClelland from IMRG.

Sean McKee, head of e-commerce at footwear chain Schuh, added: “Some 75-year-old shoppers are doing their first transactions online via iPads.”

With shoppers carrying the technology around in their pocket, retailers also have the opportunity to communicate with customers much more frequently, changing buying patterns. Retailers say they now see spikes in online activity late in the evening, as people shop while watching television, or early in the morning as purchases are made before work. Sunday evening is also overtaking Monday as the busiest online shopping day of the week.

About 80% of mobile sales come from tablet computers, but sales via smartphones are growing faster as retailers adapt their websites to make it easier to shop from a phone and the technology improves. Sales from smartphones nearly tripled between 2012 and 2013.

The increase in sales via mobiles is also helping drive use of click-and-collect services according to Webster, who said shoppers who preferred to buy on the move were less likely to have the kind of lifestyle which enabled them to wait at home for collections.

About a quarter of online orders are now collected rather than sent to homes and Webster said growth would continue.

Mark Lewis, online director at department store John Lewis, said the biggest transformation in retail in 2014 would be the blurring together of all the different shopping channels, from online and mobile to stores, home delivery and collection. “Customers expect us to offer them a completely seamless service across all touch points and our job is to wire it all together,” he said.

The rise of click-and-collect could be behind a huge growth of home and garden goods sold online. Sales rose by a quarter between December 2012 and December 2013, a pace of growth only matched by lingerie. The next fastest growing category was accessories, such as belts and scarves, followed by electrical goods.

From Oppo to OnePlus: a new company wants to build the next great smartphone

When Oppo vice president Pete Lau resigned last month, the timing was almost puzzling. Lau had just helped to bring CyanogenMod onto the company’s new handset, the N1, finally pairing Oppo’s high-end specs and sleek design with software that could create what enthusiasts might see as the perfect package. But even then, Lau wasn’t satisfied. “Everyone should have access to the best and latest technology,” Lau tells The Verge in an email.

“The Nexus line has taught consumers that it’s possible to purchase phones online.”

Lau is now launching a new company that aims to make that a reality. He’s calling it OnePlus, and its goal is to create Lau’s dream smartphone — one that marries fast, high-end hardware with equally high-end design. “We will create a more beautiful and higher quality product,” Lau says. “We will never be different just for the sake of being different. Everything done has to improve the actual user experience in day-to-day use.”

For years, building a smartphone was only a possibility for the biggest of tech companies, but more and more small manufacturers have begun throwing their hats in the ring — from Jollato Blu Productsto Yota Devices. OnePlus is the latest in that ilk of small manufacturers, and it has a similar outlook: it doesn’t aim to use cheap components, just to cut down on cost by carefully choosing where it spends money. For OnePlus, those costs will be cut out by eschewing retail stores for online sales. “The Nexus line has taught consumers that it’s possible to purchase phones online,” Lau says. “This is good for latecomers like us.” OnePlus plans to get started by releasing a smartphone in the first half of next year, but everything from wearables to mobile accessories could follow from there.

What that first phone will look like is still a mystery though. Google+ posts by Lau and CyanogenMod founder Steve Kondik suggest that CyanogenMod could come bundled, but Lau isn’t saying much for now. “Getting to know Steve, I feel we share the same philosophy – we both just want to create the best product, no matter what,” Lau says. “I believe that there are more opportunities for us to work together in the future.” OnePlus’ phones will be running on Android, but he won’t say if any customizations will come on top.

Small companies that came before OnePlus have already proven that it’s possible for them to build an attractive smartphone at an equally attractive price. Whether OnePlus can actually build one that’ll make consumers forget about Best Buy or their local wireless store and head online is another question. “A lot of the phones on the market aren’t perfect enough,” Lau says. “This is where our chance lies.”

Samsung to Unveil Smartphone With Curved Display

Samsung said Wednesday it would unveil a smartphone with a curved display in October — a technological innovation aimed at maintaining its lead in a lucrative but increasingly saturated market.

Curved displays are at a nascent stage in display technology which is shifting towards flexible panels that are bendable or can even be rolled or folded.

“We will introduce a smartphone with a curved display in October,” Samsung mobile business head of strategic marketing D.J. Lee told reporters.

He declined to give more details.

Samsung — the world’s top maker of smartphones and TVs — unveiled prototype products with a flexible screen in January.

But it still faces a major challenge in making other handset components — such as batteries — that can bend with the rest of the unit.

Curved displays are already commercially available in large-screen televisions offered by companies including Samsung and LG.

The displays are supposed to offer a more immersive viewing experience but are significantly more expensive than standard screens.

In another attempt to break new ground, Samsung unveiled earlier this month a smartwatch called Galaxy Gear, which can take photos and videos, make or take phone calls, or check e-mails.

Wearable computing, including Google’s smart glasses, is considered the next frontier in consumer electronics following smartphones.

The watch received some scathing reviews, along with complaints that it only worked in conjunction with Samsung’s latest oversized smartphone, the Galaxy Note III.

The Gear and the Galaxy Note III will hit stores in some 140 nations by the end of October, and Samsung executives said they were confident the critics could be won over.

“We received so much criticism when we first unveiled the Galaxy Note series…but it has created a whole new market segment for oversized smartphones,” said Lee Young-Hee, executive vice president of Samsung’s mobile unit.

D.J. Lee said the watch would be made connectable with other Samsung devices such as the flagship Galaxy S3 and S4 smartphones by the end of December.

Lebanese military as well as individual entrepreneurs have created smartphone apps aimed at warning their citizens of military action. This is against a backdrop of the Syrian conflict potentially crossing borders into neighboring states.

One of the new apps is designed to inform people of gunfights, to suggest routes around roadblocks using crowd sourced data, the Financial Times reported.

Since its launch, the application called Ma2too3a has been downloaded by more than 80,000 users.

“In other places in the world, the only thing that might obstruct your path is traffic,” Mohammad Taha, an entrepreneur working for Berytech, the first Lebanese business development center, pointed out. “In Lebanon there are many things that can happen.”

The Lebanese army is keeping up with the individual entrepreneurs, announcing the development of its own LAF (Lebanese Armed Forces) Shield application for iOS and Android. The application gives data on suspicious objects, vehicles and violence in the area.

Lebanese citizens will also have the chance to communicate directly with army personnel in case of kidnap or forced confinement, according to a statement from the army.

LAF Shield allows people to take photographs, record videos, or send messages linked to their security, the Army Command also indicated.

It also allows them to identify “dangerous sites” such as places where security incidents happened through an interactive site.

Plus, LAF Shield makes it possible for users to download army songs.

Meanwhile, another entrepreneur is developing a smartphone application called “Way to Safety” that distinguishes the sound of gunfire from the sound of fireworks. Firas Wazneh believes that an app of this kind could come in handy in the country “where manic partying often overlaps with political violence.”

The application is also able to calculate the location of the gun fighting.

The news about the newly-introduced application comes amidst concerns that the Syrian conflict may escalate and affect neighboring states, including Lebanon.

Lebanon in fact went through a major civil war between 1975 and 1990, so its citizens are somewhat used to military action.

“We’ve had a lot of practice: the civil war was not just a couple of years,” art teacher Joumana Bou Khaled said.

All About The Smartphone News

Every time, significantly more end users are acquiring smartphones just like never before. This is fuelled through the boosting wide variety of low cost smartphones which are being created out there by almost all critical smartphone manufacturers. Visit my site for more news and reviews.

For that uninitiated, a smartphone is a cell phone which may get connected to the net and contains the chance to work and acquire apps. Also a low-priced smartphone is provided with voice, data, wireless fidelity, Bluetooth and GPRS elements. Operating systems that are most frequently employed in good value smartphones comprise the Android by Google, iOS by Apple as well as Mobile 7 by Windows. The vast majority of smartphone models, among them cheap smartphones, utilize the 3G wireless communication technology as well as switches onto Wi-Fi each time it is obtainable. Indeed, more modern good value smart phone handsets are increasingly being manufactures for accommodating the forthcoming 4G technology.

Evaluations have unveiled that throughout the world, the profit of cellphones to end-users totaled over 416 million units in the last quarter of 2011. This was a 35 percent maximize in the related quarter in 2009. The profit of smartphones, among them shard touch screen phones, expanded over 95 per cent from the 3rd quarter in the last year. Smartphones constituted at least 19 % in the total sales of mobiles within the last quarter in 2010.

The U.S.A has over 290 million cellular phone members as well as smart phone transmission in the country is over 92 percent. More than one household in each and every 4 had mobile phones with no landline connection. Subsequently is a growth of well over 2.1 percent than 2009. Just about 1 household, in every six, work with cell phones primarily even with possessing a landline connection. All over the world you will discover nearly 5 billion smartphone users, a substantial percentage of who take advantage of affordable smartphones.

With more volume of people taking to cell phones, the worries in relation to smartphone safety are certain to boost. If you\’re some of those that have purchased a mobile, use a interesting number code to lock your phone. Over 50 percent of smart phone buyers don\’t use it as well as their mobile phone models are more prone to burglars as well as online hackers. Aside from, do not save any banking password in your touch screen phone. Practically 24 % buyers accomplish that and also 40 per cent of these people state that losing their handset could be worse than dropping their wallet. Above two million cell phones are taken or even misplaced every year. That is one cellular phone in each and every 15 seconds.

As more cell phone manufacturing providers focus their interest on producing cheap phones, this section is scheduled to observe a marvelous rise in the approaching days.
