Total online sales rose year-on-year in December to £11.1bn, with mobiles and tablets used for nearly 6% of all retail sales

Mobile phones and tablet computers are now used for nearly 6% of all retail sales as Brits embrace shopping from the sofa, the train and under the duvet.

While total online sales rose 18% year-on-year in December to £11.1bn, according to the latest figures from e-tail industry body IMRG and advisory firm Capgemini, sales via mobile devices doubled to £3bn.

“Sales via mobiles will continue to rise in 2014, this is now mainstream,” said Chris Webster, head of retail at Capgemini. He said that the adoption of hand-held technology, as well as the development of click-and-collect” services, which enable shoppers to order online and then pick up their purchases at a convenient store, had accelerated the switch from the high street to online. “What we usually see when a market matures is that the rate of growth slows, but it is accelerating,” Webster said. IMRG is predicting that this year total online sales will rise by 17% to £107bn after rising 16% to £91bn last year.

Shoppers’ switching to the internet is already having a huge impact on traditional retailers who are having to invest millions of pounds in creating logistics networks and IT systems to cope with delivery of online orders while sales in stores fall back. Those retailers without a strong online presence, such as supermarket Morrisons, had a very poor Christmas.

But the switch to mobile shopping is causing other potentially longlasting changes. Retailers said easy-to-use and now cheap tablet computers such as Tesco’s Hudl were opening up online shopping to a much broader range of consumers, including the less well-off and older.

“Tablet computers are lowering the barriers to entry. People not comfortable with technology are comfortable with tablets which are more tactile,” said Andrew McClelland from IMRG.

Sean McKee, head of e-commerce at footwear chain Schuh, added: “Some 75-year-old shoppers are doing their first transactions online via iPads.”

With shoppers carrying the technology around in their pocket, retailers also have the opportunity to communicate with customers much more frequently, changing buying patterns. Retailers say they now see spikes in online activity late in the evening, as people shop while watching television, or early in the morning as purchases are made before work. Sunday evening is also overtaking Monday as the busiest online shopping day of the week.

About 80% of mobile sales come from tablet computers, but sales via smartphones are growing faster as retailers adapt their websites to make it easier to shop from a phone and the technology improves. Sales from smartphones nearly tripled between 2012 and 2013.

The increase in sales via mobiles is also helping drive use of click-and-collect services according to Webster, who said shoppers who preferred to buy on the move were less likely to have the kind of lifestyle which enabled them to wait at home for collections.

About a quarter of online orders are now collected rather than sent to homes and Webster said growth would continue.

Mark Lewis, online director at department store John Lewis, said the biggest transformation in retail in 2014 would be the blurring together of all the different shopping channels, from online and mobile to stores, home delivery and collection. “Customers expect us to offer them a completely seamless service across all touch points and our job is to wire it all together,” he said.

The rise of click-and-collect could be behind a huge growth of home and garden goods sold online. Sales rose by a quarter between December 2012 and December 2013, a pace of growth only matched by lingerie. The next fastest growing category was accessories, such as belts and scarves, followed by electrical goods.

Since some of that browsing and buying will occur at work, experts say companies would be wise to give employees the following
eight tips to protect themselves and corporate data.

First up, the company’s Wi-Fi network should be off limits for shopping. Administrators should block any device that is not
authorized to access the network.

Most employees have their own data plans; so they can use their cellular provider’s network to browse the web for bargains.
That way, a malicious app on the phone won’t have the opportunity to compromise the corporate network.

“It’s not likely (to happen), but there is a risk,” Ken Westin, security researcher at Tripwire, said Monday.

To prevent losing personal or business-related data, employees should avoid specialty apps from retailers and shop through
their mobile browsers.

Apps are notorious for accessing more information on the phone than needed, such as contact lists. Symantec’s latest Internet
Security Threat Report rated information stealing as the top threat from mobile malware or overly aggressive ad networks.

When using the mobile browser, be sure the URL to the shopping site starts with “https,” which indicates a secure connection
with the site to protect important data, such as credit card numbers.

In addition, sensitive information, such as passwords, should not be stored in the browser. “Depending on the mobile browser,
this information could be exposed for malicious purposes,” Joe Schumacher, security consultant for Neohapsis, said.

Companies should remind employees to be wary of link-carrying text messages promising big deals on popular items. Clicking
on the link to find the bargain can sometimes download malware or send the victim to a malicious website.

Apps promising huge discounts should also be avoided, and people should review carefully the permissions apps seek for accessing
data and services on the smartphone. Denying unnecessary permissions “can reduce your risk of exposing mobile data to a malicious
entity,” Schumacher said.

[Mobile shopping remains stifled by security, ease of use]

Social media apps should also be watched closely, since scammers target such networks to embed malicious links. These apps
present a particular risk, because they typically have broader access to data than other apps, Westin said. For example, social
networks often tap into contact lists and photos.

Finally, employees should be advised to watch their phones more closely than usual and be cautious about using them in public.
Thieves are looking for smartphones because of the resale value.

“It’s like holding a $ 500 bill,” Westin said. “(Employees) are more likely to have their phones stolen physically over the
holidays.”

This year, mobile sales on Thanksgiving and the day after, called Black Friday, accounted for nearly 26 percent and about
22 percent of total online sales, respectively, according to IBM’s analysis of 800 U.S. retail websites. On both days, people spent significantly more with their mobile devices than a year ago.

Beats the hell out of spending the post-holiday season broke and dealing with customer service at the exchange window.

It’s called the Internet. Perhaps you’ve read about it in the papers. You can order anything off it, and have it delivered! Amazing. But in case you’re unpersuaded: Many sites offer free shipping, and their Cyber Monday deals are as good as whatever’s going on in their chaotic stores right now. And it sounds obvious but — when you go on a site, look for any discount code that may be offered. Write it down so you can claim it at checkout. If you don’t see any, check on sites like retailmenot.com – there may be hidden savings codes you can use anyway.

Not all stores are evil. Saturday is traditionally “Shop Small” day, but any day this season that you put your money in a local business is a good one for your community.

Buy refurbished. Almost any company that makes things with an on/off switch sells refurbished models. Factory refurbished items are generally high quality and deeply discounted, and you can usually order them directly from the manufacturer. You can, for instance, right now save $ 200 on a MacBook Air, or get a KitchenAid mixer that normally goes for $ 350 for only $ 200. Who needs to stampede the store for Black Friday deals?

Think “game show runner-up” prize. There’s something surprisingly impressive about a big quantity of an ordinary item. I’m suggesting instead that it’s nice to have something tangible that doesn’t contribute to the household clutter – a restaurant gift certificate, tickets to a show or sporting event, or a series of classes. Be unexpected – isn’t it time your recipient saw some professional bull riding or a Zydeco band?

Get artsy or crafty, even if you are not artsy or craftsy. If you can bake or build or write a song, have at it. But if not, you can still make something creative and personal. Buy some vanilla beans today. Split them and put them in a clean glass jar. (You probably already have a few in your recycling.) Pour some not-even-top-shelf vodka, bourbon, or rum over, cover, and shake every few days. By Christmas you’ll have amazing vanilla extract for a baker friend. Or just grind up some dried fruit – apricots or prunes work nicely – with a little water, a pinch of salt and a few drops each of honey and balsamic vinegar. Bam! Fruit spread! Or two words: Homemade. Nutella.
