Support for marriage equality continues to grow

Same-sex couple Steven Bridges (L) and Michael Snell exchange rings after filling out a marriage license at the City Hall in Portland, Maine December 29, 2012.  Same-sex couples can start marrying on December 29 in Maine, a state that made history on Elec

According to most polls, a majority of Americans now support marriage equality. But it turns out that’s not the only good news to be gleaned:

The national trend using all surveys asking opinions on same-sex marriage also suggests that the majority of Americans now supports same-sex marriage.  In fact, in the past year, the change in support has increased more rapidly than ever. [...]

This has important implications for where public opinion is headed. If the stable linear trend were the right one, then by 2016 just over 56 percent of the public would be expected to support same-sex marriage. However, the accelerated trend predicts that support for same-sex marriage will be about 5 points higher by 2016. It is appropriate to infer that opinions are trending positively and changing exponentially as time goes on.

Flores also suggests that the change is too rapid to be taking place due to generational shifts—it has to be happening because previous opponents are changing their minds. And that might be the best news of all.

DARPA Continues To Push “Black Box” Brain Chip

Pentagon wants to “help” soldiers and seniors by implanting devices to trigger memories

Steve Watson
Infowars.com
February 10, 2014

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), the research arm of the military, is continuing to develop implantable brain chips, according to documents newly posted as part of the agency’s increased “transparency” policy.

The agency is seeking to develop a portable, wireless device that “must incorporate implantable probes” to record and stimulate brain activity – in effect, a memory triggering ‘black box’ device.

The process would entail placing wires inside the brain, and under the scalp, with electrical impulses fired up through a transmitter placed under the skin of the chest area.

Bloomberg first picked up the story last week, and since then several tech blogs have jumped on board, describing the technological push as part project to help injured soldiers, and part an initiative set up by the Obama administration to find treatments for brain disorders, such as Alzheimer’s.

In reality, this project has been ongoing for years, decades in fact. And given that the Pentagon war machine is spear-heading it, with $ 70m of funding, one must seriously question why the DoD suddenly gives a damn about war wounded vets, never mind everyday Americans with brain disorders.

Microchip expert Katherine Albrecht recently warned Infowars of the dangers of DARPA’s brain implant technology

The documents state that rather than aid general memory loss, such a device would enable the ability to recover “task-based motor skills” like driving cars, operating machinery, tying shoe laces or even flying planes. It would also help recover memory loss surrounding traumatic events – according to the documents.

Memory loss surrounding trauma occurs for a reason, so the individual can, at some point, slowly work back toward living a normal life. One has to wonder, from this description, whether DARPA’s brain implant, would merely facilitate “patching up”, soldiers, and sending them back out to duty, as if they were defective robots.

Indeed, that is the kind of transhumanism project that DARPA revels in. Just last year it was revealed that a DARPA team has constructed a machine that functions like a human brain and would enable robots to think independently and act autonomously.

There have also long been reports of DARPA seeking to develop technology that enables military masters to literally control the brains of soldiers and make them want to fight. A 2008 report for the US military detailed this initiative, along with possible weaponry including “Pharmacological landmines” that release chemicals to incapacitate enemy soldiers and torture techniques that involve delivering electronic pulses into the brains of terror suspects.

The report, titled “Emerging Cognitive Neuroscience and Related Technologies”, detailed by Wired and the London Guardian, was commissioned by the Defense Intelligence Agency, the intelligence wing of the Department of Defense. It contains scientific research into the workings of the human mind and suggestions for the development of new war fighting technologies based upon the findings.

In a section focusing on mind control, the report states

If we can alter the brain, why not control it? [...] One potential use involves making soldiers want to fight. Conversely, how can we disrupt the enemy’s motivation to fight? [...] How can we make people trust us more? What if we could help the brain to remove fear or pain? Is there a way to make the enemy obey our commands?

It concludes that “drugs can be utilized to achieve abnormal, diseased, or disordered psychology” and also suggests that scanners able to read the intentions or memories of soldiers could be developed.

The report clearly does not rule out the use of such mind scanning technology on civilians as it suggests that “In situations where it is important to win the hearts and minds of the local populace, it would be useful to know if they understand the information being given them.”

It also suggests that the technology will one day have applications in counter-terrorism and crime-fighting and “might be good enough to help identify people at a checkpoint or counter who are afraid or anxious.”

The notion of “recording” brain activity is also something that DARPA has long sought to master. The concept may seem completely outlandish, yet it has been the central focus of DARPA activities for some time with projects such as LifeLog, which seeks to gain a multimedia, digital record of everywhere a person goes and everything they see, hear, read, say and touch.

Wired Magazine has reported:

On the surface, the project seems like the latest in a long line of DARPA’s “blue sky” research efforts, most of which never make it out of the lab. But DARPA is currently asking businesses and universities for research proposals to begin moving LifeLog forward.

“What national security experts and civil libertarians want to know is, why would the Defense Department want to do such a thing?” the article asks. The answer lies in the stated goal of the US military – “Total Spectrum Dominance”.

Furthermore, assertions that the neuro technology would not be in any way dominant over a person’s capacity to think, does not tally with DARPA’s Brain Machine Interfaces enterprise, a $ 24 million project reported on in the August 5, 2003 Boston Globe.

The project is developing technology that “promises to directly read thoughts from a living brain – and even instill thoughts as well… It does not take much imagination to see in this the makings of a matrix-like cyberpunk dystopia: chips that impose false memories, machines that scan for wayward thoughts, cognitively augmented government security forces that impose a ruthless order on a recalcitrant population.” The Globe reported.

Government funded advances in neurotechnology which also focus on developing the ability to essentially read people’s minds should also set alarm bells ringing.

It is also well documented that the military and the federal government have been dabbling in mind control and manipulation experimentation for decades.

Brain implants are a very scary proposition, however, and selling such a thing to veterans, and especially to the wider American populace, may be a harder task than selling them a pill to pop. Which is why some, including one former DARPA director and now a Google executive, have also been developing devices such as edible chips and e-tattoos.

Transhumanism is trendy!

Spate of violence continues in Beirut with latest bombing claiming 5 lives (VIDEO)

A blast in Lebanon’s capital Beirut killed at least five people Thursday, the latest attack in a spate of violence to hit the country.

Dozens were wounded when the car bomb went off during the evening rush hour in a southern suburb known as a stronghold of the Shia militant group Hezbollah.

The blast left the mangled wreckage of cars in the street and blew out store front windows.

“Suddenly, the whole area went bright and we started running away,” Ali Oleik, an accountant who works in a nearby office building, told The Associated Press. “I saw two bodies on the street, one of a woman and another of a man on a motorcycle who was totally deformed.

No one claimed immediate responsibility for what is the latest in a wave of attacks to hit Lebanon in recent months as tensions between Sunnis and Shias grow.

Violence from the war in neighboring Syria has crept into Lebanon, after Hezbollah sent fighters to aid Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s troops against the rebels.

More from GlobalPost: Beirut bombing kills former Lebanese ambassador to US, 5 others

Just last Friday, a car bomb in downtown Beirut killed half a dozen people and injured dozens more.

Among the dead was Mohamad Chatah, a former Lebanese finance minister and ambassador to the United States who was a vocal critic of Hezbollah and Assad.

Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri, to whom Chatah was an adviser, blamed Hezbollah for that attack. The Islamist group has denied any involvement.

Thursday’s attack comes a day after Majid al-Majid — the head of a Sunni jihadist group that claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb attack on the Iranian embassy in Beirut in November — was reportedly arrested.

More from GlobalPost: Hezbollah assassination in Beirut: 3 Questions with our correspondent

The November attack, which hit the same part of the city as Thursday’s blast, left 23 people dead.

On Dec. 4, Hezbollah commander Hassan Lakkis was shot dead in Hadath, near Beirut.

Later this month, four Hezbollah members are set to stand trial in the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, who was also killed in a car bomb attack.

Franklin Graham Continues Charity Work Despite Fears for Father"s Health

Franklin Graham is pushing on with Operation Christmas Child to aid children in the Philippines despite fears for his father, Rev. Billy Graham. The well-known evangelist “hasn’t got his strength back” after contracting an infection days after his 95th birthday last month, Graham said about his father.

“He’s not doing real well. He celebrated his 95th birthday on November 7th. About a week later, he got an infection, was in the hospital for a few days, came home. But, he just hasn’t got his strength back,” Graham told “Fox & Friends” Thursday.

Story continues below video.

Though not in pain, Graham said his father is “just very weak,” and asked for prayers for his health.

“I know he would appreciate your prayers. The family would, I know that. His vitals are good,” Graham said. “He is comfortable and strong.”

Graham explained the goal of Operation Christmas Child was to provide shoeboxes packed by volunteers and filled with supplies for children in need. He said this year the program filled 10 million shoeboxes, and 60,000 shipped Thursday to children in the Typhoon ravaged Philippines.

“We’re going to focus now on the kids. These people lost everything,” Graham said.
The boxes are packed by individual families, Graham said, with each one blessed by prayer by those who packed the box for the child who receives it.

“I don’t know who will get it, but God does. And, we know God is going to hear the prayer of one righteous person. Can you imagine ten million people praying for ten million children?” Graham asked.

“Every box is like snowflakes, no two are the same. Kids pack them. And, we’re teaching kids to give. And, that’s important, that another generation learns how to give,” Graham said.

“I want every child who gets a box to know about the true meaning of Christmas.”

Hillary Clinton Continues Masking Truth About Benghazi

In response to Hillary Heckled: ‘Benghazi! Benghazi! You Let Them Die!’:

Clinton spoke over the man as he was led, shouting, out of the arena: “We have to be willing to come together as citizens to focus on the kind of future we want, which doesn’t include yelling. It includes sitting down and talking with one another.”

Isn’t that what Americans want from Hillary and her peeps, to sit and  talk with one another? Clinton and the Obama administration have not be forthright with the American people, as they double up  their efforts to mask the truth behind what really happened in Benghazi.

If Clinton were to divulge the whole truth about what really happened in Benghazi, her political career would be finish. That my friend is the reason why she won’t fess up.

BRAITHWAITE, La. (AP) — Tropical Storm Karen continued chugging toward the northern Gulf Coast on Saturday, with forecasters predicting rain, potential flooding and a decrease in speed later in the day.

The National Hurricane Center reported early Saturday that Karen’s maximum sustained winds had dropped to 40 mph, making it a weak tropical storm. It was moving north at 10 mph (16 kph), and center forecasters said in their advisory that they expect Karen to decrease in speed later Saturday and turn toward the northeast.

A tropical storm warning is in effect from Morgan City to the mouth of the Pearl River, which forms part of the border between Louisiana and Mississippi. A tropical storm watch covers the New Orleans area and a stretch from east of the Pearl River’s mouth to Indian Pass, Fla.

Forecasters expect the storm’s center to be in the warning area Saturday night or Sunday morning, and they note that an increase in speed is possible Sunday. Rain accumulations of 1 to 3 inches over the central Gulf Coast and southeastern U.S. are possible through Monday night, with isolated totals up to 6 inches.

At the hurricane center in Miami, forecasters said the storm no longer had a chance of strengthening into a hurricane.

Karen began losing some of its punch late Friday, after a busy day of preparations along the Gulf Coast for the storm. Karen is a late-arriving worry in what had been a slow hurricane season in the U.S. Karen would be the second named storm to make landfall in the U.S. — the first since Tropical Storm Andrea hit Florida in June.

Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida had each declared a state of emergency as of Friday. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Interior Department recalled workers, furloughed because of the government shutdown, to deal with the storm and help state and local agencies.

And in low-lying areas of southeast Louisiana, pickups hauling boat trailers and flatbed trucks laden with crab traps evacuated. Officials in Plaquemines Parish, La., an area inundated last year by slow-moving Hurricane Isaac in 2012, ordered mandatory evacuations Friday, mostly on the east bank of the Mississippi River. The parish, home to oil field service businesses and fishing marinas, juts out into the Gulf of Mexico from the state’s southeastern tip.

Guy Laigast, head of emergency operations in the parish, noted an earlier forecast with a westward tick. “The jog to the west has got us concerned that wind will be piling water on the east bank levees,” he said. Overtopping was not expected, but the evacuations were ordered as a precaution, he said.

Evacuations also were ordered on Grand Isle, a barrier island community where the only route out is a single flood-prone highway, and in coastal Lafourche Parish.

Traffic at the mouth of the Mississippi River was stopped Friday in advance of the storm, and passengers aboard two Carnival Cruise ships bound for weekend arrivals in New Orleans were told they may not arrive until Monday.

In New Orleans, Sheriff Marlin Gusman announced that he had moved more than 400 inmates from temporary tent facilities to safer state lockups as a precaution. Mayor Mitch Landrieu said a city emergency operations center would begin around-the-clock operations Friday evening.

In the Plaquemines Parish town of Braithwaite, swamped last year by Isaac, Blake Miller and others hauled paintings and valuables to the upper floor of the plantation home he owns.

“We came out to move the antique furniture upstairs, board up the shutters, get ready. We don’t know for what, we hope not much, but we have to be ready,” Miller said.

“I’m not expecting another Isaac, but we could get some water, so I’m moving what I can,” said Larry Bartron, a fisherman who stowed nets and fishing gear in his 26-foot fishing boat, which he planned to move inside the levee system.

Along the Mississippi, Alabama and Florida coasts, officials urged caution. Workers moved lifeguard stands to higher ground in Alabama and Florida. But there were few signs of concern among visitors to Florida’s Pensacola Beach, where visitors frolicked in the surf beneath a pier and local surfer Stephen Benz took advantage of big waves.

“There is probably about 30 days a year that are really good and you really have to watch the weather, have the availability and be able to jump at a moment’s notice,” Benz said.

Surfers took advantage of the waves at Dauphin Island, Ala., as well. And, across Mobile Bay, pastor Chris Fowler said the surf at Orange Beach was unusually large but didn’t appear to be eroding the white sand.

“Right now I’m looking at some really gargantuan waves, probably six or 7 feet high,” Fowler said.

Illegals snared as immigration debate continues

A massive weekend raid netted several hundred illegal immigrants who were either car wash workers or customers in Phoenix, according to immigrant-rights groups who say the move highlights the ongoing tensions within President Obama’s deportation policy.

Even as Capitol Hill lawmakers debate whether to move on an immigration bill this year, many immigrant-rights advocates are lobbying Mr. Obama to halt all deportations, and they have picked several cases to make a stand.

Just last week, activists in Ohio demanded a halt to the deportation of a man whose son suffers from cerebral palsy. The Obama administration complied, granting him a one-year stay.

Dr. Ben Carson Continues His Wisdom Tour

Click if you like this column!

Dr. Ben Carson, Presidential Medal of Freedom winner and legendary neurosurgeon, is now in the spotlight for his keynote address to the National Prayer Breakfast on February 7. It’s not brain surgery to figure out why.

Most notable was his criticism of Obamacare, one of the worst federal laws in decades, and one which, before its complete implementation, is already destroying our economy on a massive scale. Dr. Carson, relying on decades of medical experience, proposed health savings accounts for every American, which would fix two enormous problems in our system today: (1) regressive intergenerational transfers of wealth, and (2) half of our country not having a skin in the game, not having invested in their own futures. HSAs would incentivize efficiency, which is completely lacking in today’s broken health care system. Our country is being bankrupted by the health care industry, and Dr. Carson has a solution that needs to be taken seriously.

Dr. Carson came under fire for these remarks; people called them political, or partisan. What is wrong with a physician sharing his perspective on health policy? Is it partisan just because this is President Barack Obama we’re dealing with, whom the media has seemingly vowed to protect at any cost? Dr. Carson’s wisdom should be heeded by policymakers in Washington on both sides of the aisle.

Rush Limbaugh, in his typically bombastic style, warned afterward, as interest grew in Dr. Carson’s ideas, that “The Obama campaign team is gonna get into gear if this guy keeps talking, and they’re gonna try to find ways to smear him and ruin his life and do to him what they did to Romney. That’s all they can do. They can’t beat him in the arena of ideas and superior intellect.”

It is a shame that Dr. Carson’s speech was considered only for its public policy content. The speech is full of wisdom on other topics, such as education, speech codes, and the importance of tithing.
