School Science Project Reveals High Levels Of Fukushima Nuclear Radiation in Grocery Store Seafood

Fukushima Radiation - University Of New South Wales

A Canadian high school student named Bronwyn Delacruz never imagined that her school science project would make headlines all over the world.  But that is precisely what has happened.  Using a $ 600 Geiger counter purchased by her father, Delacruz measured seafood bought at local grocery stores for radioactive contamination.  What she discovered was absolutely stunning.  Much of the seafood, particularly the products that were made in China, tested very high for radiation.  So is this being caused by nuclear radiation from Fukushima?  Is the seafood that we are eating going to give us cancer and other diseases?  The American people deserve the truth, but as you will see below, the U.S. and Canadian governments are not even testing imported seafood for radiation.  To say that this is deeply troubling would be a massive understatement.

In fact, what prompted Bronwyn Delacruz to conduct her science project was the fact that the Canadian government stopped testing imported seafood for radiation in 2012

Alberta high-school student Bronwyn Delacruz loves sushi, but became concerned last summer after learning how little food inspection actually takes place on some of its key ingredients.

The Grade 10 student from Grande Prairie said she was shocked to discover that, in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) stopped testing imported foods for radiation in 2012.

And what should be a major red flag for authorities is the fact that the seafood with the highest radiation is coming from China

Armed with a $ 600 Geiger counter bought by her dad, Delacruz studied a variety of seafoods – particularly seaweeds – as part of an award-winning science project that she will take to a national fair next month.

“Some of the kelp that I found was higher than what the International Atomic Energy Agency sets as radioactive contamination, which is 1,450 counts over a 10-minute period,” she said. “Some of my samples came up as 1,700 or 1,800.

Delacruz said the samples that “lit up” the most were products from China that she bought in local grocery stores.

It is inexcusable that the Canadian government is not testing this seafood.  It isn’t as if they don’t know that it is radioactive.  Back in 2012, the Vancouver Sun reported that cesium-137 was being found in a very high percentage of the fish that Japan was selling to Canada…

• 73 percent of the mackerel

• 91 percent of the halibut

• 92 percent of the sardines

• 93 percent of the tuna and eel

• 94 percent of the cod and anchovies

• 100 percent of the carp, seaweed, shark and monkfish

So why was radiation testing for seafood shut down in Canada in 2012?

Someone out there needs to answer some very hard questions.

Meanwhile, PBS reporter Miles O’Brien has pointed out the extreme negligence of the U.S. government when it comes to testing seafood for Fukushima radiation.  The following comes from a recent EcoWatch article

O’Brien also introduces us to scientists from the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute who have been testing waters around the reactors—as well as around the Pacific Rim—to confirm the levels of Fukushima fallout, especially of cesium.

These scientists are dedicated and competent. But they are also being forced to do this investigation on their own, raising small amounts of money from independent sources. They were, explains lead scientist Ken Buesseler, turned down for even minimal federal support by five agencies key to our radiation protection. Thus, despite a deep and widespread demand for this information, no federal agency is conducting comprehensive, on-the-ground analyses of how much Fukushima radiation has made its way into our air and oceans.

In fact, very soon after Fukushima began to blow, President Obama assured the world that radiation coming to the U.S. would be minuscule and harmless. He had no scientific proof that this would be the case. And as O’Brien’s eight-minute piece shows all too clearly, the “see no evil, pay no damages” ethos is at work here. The government is doing no monitoring of radiation levels in fish, and information on contamination of the ocean is almost entirely generated by underfunded researchers like Buesseler.

video news report in which O’Brien discusses these issues is posted below…

It is the job of the authorities to keep us safe, and the Fukushima nuclear disaster was the worst nuclear disaster in human history.

So why aren’t they doing testing?

Why aren’t they checking to make sure that this radiation is not getting into our food chain?

The Japanese are doing testing off the coast of Japan, and one fish that was recently caught off the coast of the Fukushima prefecture was discovered to have 124 times the safe level of radioactive cesium.

So why are all the authorities in North America just assuming that the fish are going to be perfectly fine on this side of the Pacific?

One test that was conducted in California discovered that 15 out of 15 Bluefin tuna were contaminated with radiation from Fukushima.

So how can the authorities say “don’t worry, just eat the seafood”?

Everyone agrees that a plume of radioactive water has been moving from Fukushima toward the west coast of the United States.

According to researchers at the University of South Wales, that plume is going to hit our shores at some point during 2014…

The first radioactive ocean plume released by the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster will finally be reaching the shores of the United States some time in 2014, according to a new study from the University of New South Wales — a full three or so years after the date of the disaster.

The following graphic comes from that study…

Fukushima Radiation - University Of New South Wales

And multiple independent tests have already confirmed that levels of nuclear radiation are being detected on California beaches that are more than 10 times the normal level.

Clearly something is happening.

So why are the U.S. and Canadian governments willingly looking the other way?

Video Documentation Reveals Commercial Aircraft Spraying Chemtrails To Change Climate

YouTube – Veterans Today -

In 1990 the Department of Defense published a Chemtrails” manual for pilot training at the USAF Academy..

In the mid-1990′s unmarked military aircraft were observed spraying aerosols from ports located in the wings and around the exhaust of the jet engines.

In recent years, civilian aircraft are increasingly contracted to secretly spray aerosols through ports located near the engines and airframe. This video provides a well documented example of commercial aircraft spraying chemtrails over Gainsville and North Florida involving AIRTRAN airways.

IPCC scientists also admit CO2 from aircraft will grow 3% per year but make no recommendation about using alternative forms of travel.

While not admitting that aircraft are spraying tons of aerosols into the atmosphere these same scientists say that contrails and artificial clouds have a profound effect on the climate and tend to warm global surface temperatures.

Ask yourself:

“If global warming is real, why are these aircraft secretly spraying aerosols that are known by UN/IPCC scientists, to warm the climate?”

Crash driver reveals grievances to media

CNA
January 27, 2014, 12:26 am TWN

TAIPEI — A man who drove a gravel truck into the Presidential Office in Taipei Saturday aired his grievances against society in a letter delivered to a local TV station.

Chang Teh-cheng, the only one injured in the incident, said in his letter that he is willing to be sentenced to death if anyone was killed, or to serve a life sentence even if no one was killed.

The TV station said in a news report yesterday morning that it had turned Chang’s letter over to the police. The letter was sent by Chang before he drove his truck into the Presidential Office.

The incident took place early Saturday while President Ma Ying-jeou was in Sao Tome and Principe on the first leg of his eight-day, three-nation tour and the Presidential Office was closed for the weekend.

According to local news reports, Chang, who was transported to a hospital for treatment of his injuries after the incident, was angry following a court decision to sentence him to 40-day confinement after he was convicted of committing an act of violence against his ex-wife.

Prosecutors at the Taipei District Prosecutors Office said Chang received serious, though not life-threatening injuries, after his truck crashed into the bullet-proof glass door at the entrance of the Presidential Office.

Chang was the sole person injured in the incident and was treated at the hospital under the guard of police. He will be interrogated by prosecutors as soon as he is able to answer questions, said prosecution officials.

Chang posted a photo of the Presidential Office on his Facebook page, along with news about traffic incidents involving gravel trucks, adding that one day he might crash his truck into the Presidential Office to show his discontent with his court sentence.

He said that he would crash his truck into the Presidential Office in the early morning when there is little traffic and few pedestrians near the building.

But his postings didn’t draw much attention until Saturday.

He was asked by his employer to drive his truck from Taipei to Taoyuan Country to transport building debris to Keelung City that morning, but instead drove the truck to downtown Taipei and crashed it into the Presidential Office at high speed.

Before leaving his house in Wenshan District in Taipei early Saturday, Chang left a message to his two daughters urging them to take care of themselves and follow the straight and narrow in life.

NSA Quantum Program Leaked: Edward Snowden Reveals How US Government Spies On Offline Computers

I wouldn’t be so sure about that. Cottonmouth is only one of the methods they use to monitor data in an isolated (no network) environment. If you think about the sheer number of wireless networks out there, and the fact that they already said Nightstand can inject packets of data from 8 miles away, I’d bet money that they can pretty easily intercept data from pretty much any standard wireless network if they really wanted to. They also mentioned micro-circuitry that’s used in a similar fashion to the Cottonmouth method.

Jesus, as I was writing this I just remembered the whole RSA scandal that was uncovered a few weeks back (Source). Talk about a perfect way to distribute Cottonmouth!? Who’s to say that every one of the RSA key’s sold and used with this flawed algorithm designed by the NSA, also doesn’t double as a radio-transmitter like Cottonmouth? It’d be the perfect double whammy:

Step 1: If the user is online, they can use the backdoor built-in to the algorithm to gain real-time access, like a trojan virus. This would then allow further installation/distribution of software to keep the door “held open” too.
Step 2: In the event that the PC was offline yet still accessing a secure date source via the RSA key, they would simply need a little briefcase (Nightstand) located somewhere within their acceptable 8-mile radius to accomplish the exact same thing.

This is probably worthy of another thread, but directly related to the OP. S&F for the find, should be interesting come Friday.

NSA Dragnet: Snowden Leak Reveals Mass Spying During G8, G20 Summits

US may have illegally monitored foreign dignitaries as well as wider population

Steve Watson
Prisonplanet.com
Nov 28, 2013

The latest revelation to come from the Edward Snowden leaks highlights how the NSA conducted a mass spying exercise with the co-operation of Canadian authorities during international meetings in order to further certain policy goals.

In a report by The Canadian Broadcasting Company, it is revealed that Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s government colluded with the NSA during the 2010 G8 and G20 summits in Toronto.

Documents marked “Top Secret,” highlight how the US embassy in Ottawa was transformed into a spy centre compound for a week as president Obama met with 25 foreign dignitaries and leaders.

The NSA was aided by its Canadian counterpart, the Communications Security Establishment Canada (CSEC).

While the documents do not specifically state who the target of the huge operation was, it is thought that the exercise is most likely a repeat of what occurred in Britain just a few months earlier during the 2009 G20 summit in London. There, as other NSA leaks have revealed, the U.S. and Canadian intelligence agencies, along with Britain’s GCHQ are said to have hacked the phone calls and emails of multiple foreign politicians and diplomats.

The document pertaining to the Toronto summit states that the NSA’s goal was, at least in part, “providing support to policymakers” at the meetings, namely providing what would have been private information to the Canadian and US leaders in order to give them an advantage during negotiations and debates.

The documents once again highlight how the NSA surveillance dragnet extends beyond simply protecting against security threats, and has become a commonplace tool for the US government and its allies, The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. The so called “Five Eyes” have had a surveillance agreement dating back to the 1950s, it was only revealed to have existed in 2005.

If true, the latest revelations would once again show how the NSA and its partner spy agencies are routinely breaking the law. Under Canadian law, a warrant must be issued in order for the government to conduct covert surveillance on anyone, including foreign visitors. Foreign spy agencies also do not have jurisdiction on Canadian soil.

“If CSEC tasked NSA to conduct spying activities on Canadians within Canada that CSEC itself was not authorized to take, then I am comfortable saying that would be an unlawful undertaking by CSEC,” says Craig Forcese, an expert in national security at University of Ottawa’s faculty of law.

“[The CSEC is] undermining democracy here at home, while deeply damaging Canada’s international reputation as a fair and honest partner,” said Steve Anderson, executive director of OpenMedia.ca, a Canadian civil liberties group.

The US government has refused to comment. Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s office has also refused to comment, citing national security.

The ‘Wall Street’ actor revealed that his throat cancer was really tongue cancer.

Bite your tongue, Michael Douglas.

The actor, 69, who claimed to have throat cancer last spring, has now confessed that he in fact had tongue cancer.

Douglas said he lied because surgery for the latter can be disfiguring, and he was promoting “Wall Street 2” at the time.

During an interview with Samuel L. Jackson on a Male Cancer Awareness Week special edition of UK TV’s “This Morning,” Douglas says surgeons warned him, “If we do have to have surgery it’s not going to be pretty.”

“This was right before I had a big tour for ‘Wall Street,’ so we kind of said, ‘There’s no way we can cancel the tour and say we don’t feel well,’” Douglas told Jackson, according to People magazine.

Douglas and wife of 13 years Catherine Zeta-Jones separated in August, but will reportedly reunite for Thanksgiving with their children in New York.

The actor previously said his throat cancer was a result of an HPV strain caused by oral sex.

The actor’s handsome mug now appears to be in the clear, but maybe all the talk is an attempt to take attention away from his separation from wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was recently spotted still wearing her wedding ring.

Shocking New Research Reveals Obama"s Legacy Could Be an America of Aristocrats and Peons

Warning: This story is going to make you very angry.

New research from inequality experts Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez has revealed that we now have the biggest gap between the rich and rest of America since economists began tracking data a century ago.

This isn’t supposed to happen following an economic crisis. After the Great Depression, Roosevelt’s New Deal programs worked to prevent wealth from piling back up at the top. And over the past two decades, the percentage of income claimed by the wealthy dropped after each recession. But in the aftermath of the Great Recession, the top 1 percent has gobbled up nearly all of the income gains in the first three years of the “recovery” — a stupifying 95 percent. Economic inequality is even worse than it was before the crash. In fact, last year the rich took home the largest share of income since 1917 with the exception of only one year: 1928.

Is This an Accident?

Let’s take a look at the years from 2009 -2012. While working people were sweating it, the richest Americans have enjoyed a fabulous ride. For example, if you were in the top 1 percent in 2012, lucky you — your income soared on average by 20 percent. And if you were in the top 0.01 percent, you probably bought a bigger yacht because your income was up by more than 32 percent on average. As for everybody else? They shared a measly 1 percent rise.

In other words, the rich are getting richer, and the rest of us are frozen in economic purgatory.

For despite all the talk of the Federal Reserve’s “quantitative easing” driving soaring stock markets and a post-crisis economic boom, 99 percenters have seen their real incomes going down and their living standards depressed. Ordinary, hard-working people are not getting a slice of the pie, they’re barely getting a sliver. (Cue Obama’s apparent pick for the next Federal Reserve chair, the crony capitalist, bank-loving Larry Summers.)

The bailouts, which handed boatloads of money to bankers, can’t be blamed entirely on President Obama. But ever since then, the policies of his administration have pretty much fixed things so that those who caused the crisis have benefited, while those who didn’t paid for it. He has surrounded himself with Wall Street apologists as economic advisors, despite the existence of extraordinary economic minds like Nobel laureate Joseph Stiglitz who could offer sound and sensible guidance. Every chance Obama has to correct this mistake, he seems to double down and brings on another 1 percenter.

To be fair, Republicans have been the most ardent promoters of “trickle-down” economics and austerity policies that leave regular people behind. But centrist Democrats have done little to forge a different path. A few courageous progressive voices, like Elizabeth Warren’s, get drowned out by a chorus of “Let’s Make a Deal” politicians eager to screw the bulk of the population and reward the rich while filling their campaign coffers. Policies like cutting our social insurance programs and allowing the rich to evade taxes are hidden behind clever marketing campaigns: For hedge fund billionaire Pete Peterson, for example, who counts deficit committee co-chairs Alan Simpson and Erskine Bowles as his errand boys, the name of the game is “fixing the debt.”

What these plutocrats are really doing is fixing your financial future so that more money can be sucked out of your pockets to line theirs. Obama’s decision to focus on deficit reduction rather than job creation is the sure sign his administration sings the tune of the wealthy. The wealthy wanted deficit reduction, while the rest of us wanted investment in jobs, schools and infrastructure, as Northwestern University’s Benjamin Page and his team of social scientists have shown in their extensive research on public opinon. But we didn’t get it. Instead we got job insecurity and nightmare retirement prospects.

Making the Rich Richer is a Terrible Idea.

Making the rich richer is a terrible idea for several reasons. For one thing, it kills jobs. When regular people have money in their pockets to pay for things like food, clothing, or going to the movies, they are actually creating jobs. The taco stand can hire another cashier when people come in to spend their money on tacos.

But there are only so many tacos you can buy. If you have much more money than you can possibly spend, you’ll likely sock it away or invest in financial assets or start doing risky speculation, which doesn’t create any jobs. With banks deleveraging (cutting back on loans) and many companies fearful of borrowing given anemic rates of economic growth, your savings won’t be recycled. Even if you’re a rich person who builds a company, chances are you’re not creating very good jobs, and you’re also destroying plenty of them. High unemployment makes it easy to hold wages down and squeeze more and more work from desperate workers. Apple executives like to brag about all the American jobs they create, but a great many of them are crappy retail jobs featuring $ 26,000 salaries and little chance of a long-term career.

An economist might say that the economic return to capitalists has gone up at the expense of economic return to labor.

As Nick Hanauer, founder of Second Avenue Partners, told Bloomberg:

“I can say with confidence that rich people don’t create jobs, nor do businesses, large or small. What does lead to more employment is the feedback loop between customers and businesses. And only consumers can set in motion a virtuous cycle that allows companies to survive and thrive and business owners to hire. An ordinary middle-class consumer is far more of a job creator than I ever have been or ever will be.”

You can see the truth of Hanauer’s statement when you realize that while the concentration of wealth in America has been heating up for the last couple of decades, the job market has been pretty bleak. That’s what happens when Washington policy becomes “Who Wants to Help a Millionaire?”

If making the rich richer is destructive, why do we do it? We’re not supposed to be a country of aristocrats and peasants who labor at the pleasure of the wealthy. We’re supposed to be free and proud citizens whose labor, investment and idea drive the economy.

What’s happened is that the rich have been using the fairy tale of “rugged individualism” and our healthy skepticism of too much government to convince many of us that we shouldn’t have programs designed to promote economic equality and benefit ordinary people rather than the rich. And, of course, they’ve unleashed their bankrolls in Washington, where, since Newt Gingrich came on the scene, Congress has turned into what political economist Thomas Ferguson describes in the Financial Times as a “Best Buy system” where positions of power go to whoever can raise the most cash. “Uniquely among legislatures in the developed world, US congressional parties now post prices for key slots in the lawmaking process,” writes Ferguson. “The practice makes cash flow the basic determinant of the very structure of lawmaking.”

The rich are getting richer in that they control our legal and political systems. They aren’t going to give up this control voluntarily.

If we continue on this path of functional feudalism, we can look to history for hints as to what might happen. In the late 18th century, peasants in France expressed their anger at the brutes who were extracting their wealth by rounding them up in the Place de la Concorde and separating their heads from their bodies. Hopefully we can go a more peaceful route, joining forces in a mass movement that pushes our elected officials to get our economy and society back into balance through fair taxes, a robust social safety net, investment in working people, rules of the road that curb Wall Street’s excesses, and a plan to bring the financial sector back to a manageable size.

The Occupy movement was a hint that this might be possible. It was also a warning that the Powers That Be will do everything they can to shut such a movement down.

But if we maintain the current path, at some point, the 99 percent will be pushed too far.

TV host Julie Chen reveals she"s had plastic surgery and we"re supposed to cheer? | Patricia Park

Chen was told her ‘Asian eyes’ were holding back her career. One again, women need to slice, dice, and diet to succeed

CBS television personality Julie Chen has generated quite the buzz since confessing that she’s had plastic surgery on The Talk on Wednesday. As a young news reporter in Dayton, Ohio, Chen was informed by her boss that her “Asian eyes” made her look “disinterested” and “bored”. She then met with a high-powered agent, who handed her a list of plastic surgeons specializing in blepharoplasty (pdf) – the procedure for creating double-creased eyelids, which at least 50% of Asians are not born with naturally —and told Chen if she got the surgery, she’d go “straight to the top.” And so she did.

After the American Big Brother host “outed” herself on-air, the women round The Talk table immediately voiced their support. Sharon Osborne let out an exuberant, “Fabulous!” followed by a slightly more tempered, “It was the right thing to do.” Sheryl Underwood said, “You represented your race, you represented women, and your colleagues.” Sara Gilbert told Chen:

I think you were beautiful before, you’re beautiful now, and it’s really whatever makes you happy.

These rallies of “You go, girl!” have not only been limited to Chen’s fellow co-hosts. The Asian American Journalists Association “applaud[s] Chen for sharing this personal moment with her audience“. The popular women’s lifestyle site BlogHer discusses how Chen’s decision was motivated by racism. Even the ever-cantankerous Angry Asian Man blog offers up some sympathetic words for Chen. And in what must feel like the ultimate “booyah” moment for Chen, she received a public apology from WDTN-TV, the Dayton station where she first got her start.

Overall, Chen’s big reveal has been met with a positive response. I’m sympathetic to the challenges Chen faced in her decision to go under the knife. I’m also heartened that issues of racism and workplace discrimination are being brought to light. But we need to take this issue one step further. While everyone acknowledges the motivations that led Chen to undergo the surgery, what no one seems to be addressing is the enormous pressure young women face in meeting a certain standard of beauty.

Chen’s decision, along with the overwhelming public support, sends an ambivalent message to women grappling with their own physical identities and offers a troubling solution as to how to “fix” the problem in order to achieve success.

After hearing the remarks about her eyes, Chen admits she “started developing a complex. I got very insecure about this”. Over and over she watched video reels of herself, fixating on what she began to perceive as her glaring flaws.

All I could see is my eyes, and does [my boss] have a point. And all I’m doing is watching my eyes. Do I look bored or disinterested?

Chen’s words are unsettling at best; her increasing dissatisfaction with her appearance, coupled with her repetitive, obsessive language, sound like the makings of a body image disorder. Chen’s solution: electing to have the double eyelid surgery. Chen herself notes that after she had the procedure done, “the ball did roll for me”. (For what it’s worth, speculations abound that her eyes are not the only thing Chen’s had “fixed”.)

Carol D Gray, a clinical psychologist from Newton, MA who specializes in girls’ development, says we live in a society that “promotes a completely unrealistic standard of beauty which makes all women feel flawed, particularly girls and young women who are especially vulnerable to media images. This ultimately leads to 51% of Americans walking around feeling like there’s something wrong with them. The only sadder reality is that we’re also led to believe that if we just try hard enough we can fix what’s wrong.”

In a time where women already face enormous pressure to have – and achieve – it all (we are, after all, living in the age of Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer), Chen’s revelation adds to that yet one more expectation: that we are expected to “fix what’s wrong” and that fix might be one scalpel incision away.

Harriet Brown, associate professor at the Newhouse School of Public Communications and author of, most recently, Brave Girl Eating: A Family’s Struggle with Anorexia, has also spoken extensively on the subject of female body image.

I’m glad Julie Chen gave voice to the kind of pressure she faced to conform to the very narrow, and narrow-minded, cultural norms around her appearance. I do worry that her story will inadvertently reinforce the notion that women need to slice, dice, and diet themselves as close as possible to those norms if they want to succeed.

It is a worry that echoes my own. We take our cues from popular figures in media, especially those being celebrated for their actions and achievements. And yes: there is something laudable about Chen “coming clean.” But the conversation should not stop there. Before we echo Osborne’s cries of “Fabulous!”, we should look to deeper solutions beyond a trip to the plastic surgeon’s clinic. Chen’s next steps – as well as our own – should be to address this implicit message sent to young women: that their the physical shortcomings – perceived or otherwise – need only be “fixed” in order to achieve success.
