China: Train station attack an act of terrorism

BEIJING (AP) — China’s official Xinhua News Agency says authorities consider the attack by a group of knife-wielding assailants at a train station in southwestern China in which at least 27 people died to be an act of terrorism.

Xinhua did not identify who might have been responsible for the Saturday evening attack at the Kunming Railway Station in Yunnan province. But the news agency said authorities considered it to be “an organized, premeditated violent terrorist attack.”

Local television station K6 said that several of the attackers were shot by police and that victims were transported to local hospitals. Xinhua says 27 people were killed and 109 others injured.

The Communist Party-run People’s Daily reports that China’s top police official, Politburo member Meng Jianzhu, is en route to Kunming, an indication of how seriously authorities view the attack.

Alabama RFID Cards: How Biometrics Helps DHS Fight Terrorism

The Alabama Department of Public Safety (ADPS) are issuing new chipped driver’s licenses and IDs under the STAR ID initiative that promises to “improve the integrity and security of state-issued driver licenses and identification cards, which, in turn, will help fight terrorism and reduce fraud.”

STAR ID is the Alabama legislature’s response to the REAL-ID Act of 2005 (RIDA) which keeps the state in compliance with federal mandates while maintaining ‘security [and] authentication” of Alabama residents.

By December of 2017, Alabama states that all residents must have their STAR ID; having replaced their current ID and driver’s license.

RIDA is tasked with protecting Americans from terrorism by empowering the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and other federal agencies to monitor and profile residents to ensure their authenticity.

Over four distinct phases, the DHS is enforcing state mandatory deadlines for compliance and a courtesy 3 month “warning” period.

The phases of compliance are:
1. Restricted areas for DHS headquarters
2. All federal facilities and nuclear power plants
3. Semi-restricted areas at federal facilities
4. Entry into commercial aircraft

States that have complied with RFID chipped ID cards for residents include:
• Alabama
• California
• District of Columbia
• Florida
• Hawaii
• Illinois
• Kansas
• Maryland
• Nevada
• New Mexico
• North Carolina
• Oregon
• Rhode Island
• Texas
• Virginia
• Wisconsin
In 2003 the Department of Defense was receiving software for the Joint Protective Enterprise Network (JPEN) under directives from Oracle’s Homeland Security Program Office.

Oracle was paid $ 15 million to supply this system to military bases across the nation. JPEN would facilitate the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), the Transportation Security Agency (TSA) and the DHS; as well as connecting hospitals, air traffic control centers, nuclear power plant operators and police and fire departments.

Six years later, the DHS renegotiated contracts with Oracle. Under consolidation, DHS took 487,000 licenses, software and maintenance agreements from Microsoft; as well “unlimited” licenses between Oracle and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The DoDare using biometrics to fight terrorism, catalogue active duty troops and maintain national security interests. The Biometrics Identity Management Agency (BIMA) utilizes biometrics to “identify the enemy” and verify individuals to ensure secure business and governmental functions.

The US Department of State Consular Consolidated Database (CCD) has more than 90 million people’s photographs data based with the continuous use of the Department of Facial Recognition Software.
The DHS Automated Biometric Identification System tracks an estimated 250,000 biometric communications a day. Over 126 million fingerprints, photographs and biographical information are filed for the US government to use at their discretion.

The National ID card by Oracle would establish “a standard and secure national identifier, we could ensure that any system that chose to use it could effectively share information with other systems that use it.”

Larry Ellison, founder of the Oracle Corporation, showed off a prototype of a National ID card at the National Press club in 2001 that included a picture, fingerprint and other digital controls to ensure security. He believed that the US government “could phase in digital ID cards to replace existing Social Security cards and driver’s licenses. These new IDs should be based on a uniform standard such as credit card technology, which is harder to counterfeit than existing government IDs.”

The world at war: The mind, journalism, freedoms... Valued ‘Ally’ Saudi Arabia Supports Terrorism, Urges US War in Syria

Saudi Arabia, the brutal authoritarian theocracy that the democracy-promoting Washington claims as one of its closest allies, has a bit of a history of pressuring the U.S. into Middle East wars. The 1991 First Gulf War to oust Saddam Hussein from Kuwait was fought largely in defense of Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom also encouraged the Bush administration to invade Iraq in 2003. And the Saudi king has repeatedly urged Washington to attack Iran to secure Saudi interests in the Sunni-Shia regional divide.

Saudi Arabia also has a rather incriminating and duplicitous history of harboring Islamic extremists of the al-Qaeda, jihadist type. They helped the U.S. fund the mujahideen in Afghanistan. Most of the 9/11 hijackers were Saudis (and they were directed by a Saudi, named Osama bin Laden). There is even a classified record that members of Congress have claimed indicates the Saudi government’s role in the 9/11 attacks.

Since the start of Syria’s civil war, foreign jihadists have been flooding the country – many of them coming from Saudi Arabia. Al Monitor reports:

Estimates of the number of Saudis fighting in Syria range as high as 2,500. Some are hardened veterans of earlier jihads in Afghanistan, Bosnia and Iraq. A few are compatriots of Osama bin Laden. Others traveled to Syria from the kingdom, despite individual travel bans imposed for dissident activities at home. Some traveled directly through major Saudi airports, leading many observers to conclude they were encouraged by the authorities to leave the kingdom and go fight Assad. For over two years, the Saudi government seemed to turn a blind eye to travel by its citizens — even political dissidents — to Syria.

Kuwait, which has close ties to the Saudi government, “is a major source of private funding for Jabhat al-Nusra, al-Qaeda’s official arm in Syria,” Al Monitor reports.

Interesting enough, but that is not the big piece of news from this Al Monitor report. The big news is this: “King Abdullah will make a major push for a more vigorous American effort to oust Assad when he hosts Obama [late next month]. The Saudis have been openly disappointed that Obama has not used force to get rid of Assad or provided more assistance to training and arming the Syrian opposition.” Now, the report says, the Saudis are trying to persuade Obama to impose regime change in Syria by promising to cut back on its support for jihadists.

To sum up, Saudi Arabia’s policy on Syria amounts to funding groups considered by Washington to be terrorists and to lobbying the President of the United States to destroy the Damascus government. The two initiatives are deeply intertwined given that a collapse of the regime in Syria would mean chaos and huge ungoverned spaces, which foreign funded jihadists could thrive in.

I’ve been hammering away on the issue of entangling alliance for months now, but where is the outrage on Saudi Arabia? The U.S. government continues to help prop up and arm the Saudi government and yet it supports terrorism and is trying to suck the U.S. into another dangerous and endless military quagmire in the Middle East. Where are the belligerent members of Congress, the Peter Kings and Charles Schumers, condemning Saudi Arabia? They condemn other countries for much less.

Obama admin weighing another drone strike on U.S. citizen accused of terrorism

Obama administration officials revealed that they are considering a drone strike on a U.S. citizen who they say is a member of al-Qaida and actively planning attacks on Americans abroad.

Read our latest: “Security researcher: Sochi hacking story was ’100% fraudulent,’ NBC defends report” and “Plane forced to land after Ukrainian hijacker attempts to divert jet to Sochi

In May of last year, Attorney General Eric Holder publicly confirmed that U.S. drone strikes have killed four American citizens in Yemen in Pakistan without charge or trial.

In the same month, Obama announced new restrictions on drone strikes, which some say may be breached in this case.

While the Obama administration’s policy is that only the military can kill Americans overseas who are suspected terrorists, officials said the president could buck those guidelines and allow the CIA to use a drone strike, according to the National Journal.

The Associated Press cited four unnamed U.S. officials who said that the suspected terrorist is currently in a national that refuses to allow U.S. military operations on their soil. The country also reportedly is unable to pursue the unidentified American citizen.

Two of the officials said the man is an al-Qaeda facilitator who is directly responsible for deadly attacks on American citizens overseas.

The man also “continues to plan attacks against them that would use improvised explosive devices,” according to the two officials cited by AP.

Yet another U.S. official said that the Department of Defense is not yet settled on if the man is actually dangerous enough “to merit the potential domestic fallout of killing an American without charging him with a crime or trying him.”

Another concern would be the significant international issues that could arise if an operation was carried out in a country that will not allow U.S. military action on their territory.

A different U.S. official told the AP that the Pentagon already decided to recommend killing the man.

The suspected terrorist is reportedly in a well-guarded, remote location. Any attempt to capture him using U.S. troops without the approval of the local government “would be risky and even more politically explosive than a U.S. missile strike,” the AP reports, citing military officials.

An unnamed senior administration official said that the Department of justice is currently building a case for the president to review and decide if the strike will be carried out.

The procedure is the same as the one followed when the U.S. killed Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen in 2011. Al-Awlaki was a well-known militant cleric and U.S. citizen.

The Justice Department has to build a case showing that the killing of the American is “legal and constitutional.” The administration has to show that the Pentagon can take action against the citizen as an enemy combatant under the 2001 Authorization for Use of Military Force.

Under the new Obama administration guidelines, they must show that the target poses “continuing, imminent threat to U.S. persons.” Lethal force can only be used “o prevent or stop attacks against U.S. persons, and even then, only when capture is not feasible and no other reasonable alternatives exist to address the threat effectively.”

The AP, as per the government’s request, withheld the name of the country because U.S. officials said it could “interrupt ongoing counterterror operations.”

The Pentagon, CIA and Justice Department all declined to comment for the AP.

NYPD Held Mall Terrorism Exercise After Kenya Attack

Kurt Nimmo
Infowars.com
December 11, 2013

On Wednesday, the New York Police Department admitted it had conducted a late night drill at a closed shopping mall in November following the terrorist attack at a mall in Kenya on September 21. Police officials said the undisclosed drill was conducted in order to prevent chaos in the event such an attack occurred in New York.

NYPD boss Ray Kelly told the media during a news conference at police headquarters that the exercise was designed to rest the response of police officers. The NYPD boasts of having thwarted more than a dozen terrorist incidents since the September 11, 2001, attacks. Kelly said now “is a time for vigilance and not complacency. The world we are in remains a very dangerous place.”

Details about the police drill held at the Kings Plaza in Brooklyn arrives at the same time as news that the alleged Somali al-Shabab attackers numbered three or four and were not heavily armed as the media claimed during the stand-off at the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya. The New York Police Department report on the siege states that only four terrorists took part in the attack and they were lightly armed with AK-47 rifles. 67 people, mostly civilians, were killed during the attack. The NYPD report concludes that the attackers may have escaped the mall on the first day of the attack. Kenyan police and military conducted a three day siege of the mall.

It was initially claimed that 18 heavily armed gunmen had participated in the raid. “Security sources familiar with the operation to retake the mall said it would have been daunting for even the best-trained soldiers in the world,” The Times reported on September 28. Despite the “bravery of have-a-go heroes,” the newspaper reported, it took hours for a disorganized and under-equipped Kenyan military to respond. Friendly fire resulted in the shooting of a policeman by the military. The military assault resulted in the collapse of several floors of the mall.

The Kenyan government and its intelligence service knew about the al-Shabab attack and had positioned assets at the mall, according to counter-terrorism documents. “We cannot say that this attack comes as a surprise,” said Farah Maalim, former deputy speaker of the Kenyan National Assembly, according to The Guardian. “The possibility of something like this happening, and of failures in the Kenyan intelligence community, has worried us for years. We have an intelligence service more worried about internal party politics than about threats to national security.”

NYPD positioned “critical response vehicles’ tlo New York malls following the Kenya attack in September.

A Harvard trained lawyer who works for the World Bank, Bendita Malakia, claimed she was rescued by an American security team five hours after the assault began. The American’s assertion raised the possibility that American intelligence also knew about the attack beforehand.

Following the attack, counter-terrorism experts warned that an attack of similar magnitude might occur in the United States. “The fear is that if a couple young men returned to the United States with training to conduct military attacks on U.S. citizens, you could take the template of this mall attack that’s happening right now in Kenya and apply it to the U.S.,” Anders Folk, the former assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota, told the Washington Times in September.

“There possibly could be Americans over there that we don’t know about, and that’s one of my biggest concerns,” Rep. Michael T. McCaul, Texas Republican and chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, told CNN. McCaul said “the idea that they can come back into the United States is a real valid concern.”

9 sentenced in Bahrain to life imprisonment over ‘terrorism’

A court in Bahrain sentenced nine people to life in prison on charges of forming a militant group, manufacturing explosives and plotting attacks aimed at destabilizing the restive Gulf kingdom.

Four of the defendants were present in court for the verdicts and the remaining five, tried in absentia, saw an additional 10 years tacked onto their life-sentences for failing to turn themselves in.

Life imprisonment in Bahrain entails 25-years behind bars.

According to the Bahrain News Agency, the convicted men had turned a Manama warehouse into a bomb factory, where they had prepared explosives to attack security forces, civilians and private and public property “with the aim of undermining the stability of the country and harming its economic foundations”.

Investigators say in searching the suspects’ homes and other locations utilized in their plot, they seized highly explosive packs of nitro-glycerin and nitro-cellulose.

“A memory chip confiscated from suspects included video clips, lessons on manufacturing bombs and explosives, Al-Qassam-type rockets, anti-tank weapons and also methods for procurement of substances usable in making bombs. DNA tests and fingerprints from the locations were proven to be compatible with those of a number of the suspects,” ANA continued.

Some of the men were implicated in a November 2011 bombing that damaged cars near the Bahrain International Exhibition & Convention Centre in the capital Manama.

Monday’s ruling brings to 104 the number of Shi’ites jailed since September 29 in connection with violence in the Sunni-ruled Gulf kingdom.

Late last month in a mass show trial spanning six separate cases, 95 Bahraini protesters were sentenced to between three and 15 years in prison for allegedly trying to topple the country’s constitutional monarchy, organizing bombings and inciting anti-government rallies.

The defendants received a total of 808 years in prison.

Unrest has gripped Sunni-ruled Bahrain since February 2011, when the majority Shi’ites started an uprising for greater political rights.

In August, King Hamad issued a decree instituting stricter punishments for “terror acts” in the strategically important kingdom, which is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet.

The penalties include a minimum 10-year jail term for an attempted bombing. If the attack results in casualties, the sentence can be life imprisonment or possibly the death penalty.

The government crackdown has seen at least 89 people killed since the protests first began according to the International Federation for Human. Despite the violence, demonstrators continue to stage rallies in villages outside Manama, where clashes with police are a regular occurrence.

‘Iran flag-bearer of fighting terrorism’

Iran flag-bearer of countering global terrorism: Intelligence min.

Iran’s intelligence minister has condemned the growing wave of the new forms of terrorism across the globe and underlined Iran’s pivotal role as the flag-bearer of countering the scourge.

“Unfortunately, in today’s world, not only has terrorism not stopped, but also it manifests itself in new forms, and we are witnessing acts of terrorism across the world,” said Seyyed Mahmoud Alavi in a ceremony in Tehran on Saturday, which was held to commemorate 17,000 Iranian martyrs who have fallen victim to terrorist acts.

“Terror signifies enemies’ frustration in using logic, and the more the frustration grows, the more the enemies are enraged,” Alavi noted.

“There are countries in the world that pay lip service to countering terrorism and consider themselves the flag-bearers and pioneers of the movement, but when we see their track record, it turns out that they are the initiators of state terrorism,” he added.

He said the victims of terrorism should take the lead when it comes to fighting terrorism, adding, “The Islamic Republic of Iran is the true standard-bearer of this campaign.”

NYPD labels mosques terrorism enterprises

Muslim worshippers attend Jumu’ah prayers in the Islamic Society of Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, New York, August 16, 2013

The New York Police Department is conducting massive spying operations on all mosques and secretly earmarking them as terrorism organizations, a new report says.

The NYPD has opened at least a dozen “terrorism enterprise investigations” into mosques since the 9/11 attacks, according to interviews and confidential police documents obtained by The Associated Press.

Designating an entire mosque as a terrorism enterprise allows police to spy on the imams even without specified evidence of criminal wrongdoing.

The terrorism designation also means that anyone who attends Muslim prayer services is a potential subject of an investigation and surveillance, according to the report.

The NYPD used a tactic called TEI, which allowed officers to monitor political or religious speeches whenever the “facts or circumstances reasonably indicate” that the people were involved in plotting terrorism.

The report is also based on a new book entitled “Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD’s Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden’s Final Plot Against America” by AP reporters. The book is based on hundreds of previously unpublished police files and interviews with current and former NYPD, CIA and FBI officials.

The NYPD has declined to comment on the report, according to AP.

Many of the investigations stretch for years allowing surveillance to continue even though the NYPD has never criminally charged a mosque or Islamic organization as a terrorism enterprise.

The AP first revealed in 2011 that the NYPD was spying on Muslims in the city. The new documents show that the NYPD investigated countless innocent New York Muslims and put information about them in secret police files.

Civil rights lawyers in the US have sued NYPD, saying the Muslim spying programs are unconstitutional and make Muslims afraid to practice their faith.

“I have never felt free in the United States. The documents tell me I am right,” Zein Rimawi, one of the Bay Ridge mosque’s leaders, said after reviewing an NYPD document describing his mosque as a terrorist enterprise.

Sparkler Terrorism: Bloomberg Urges Cuomo to Veto Fireworks Bill

Says bill would benefit terrorists instead of your average patriotic American

Adan Salazar
Infowars.com
June 28, 2013

New York’s Authoritarian Mayor Michael Bloomberg wishes you a happy sparkler-free Fourth of July

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is warning Gov. Andrew Cuomo that crafty terrorists will all too eagerly take advantage of a new measure allowing seasonal sales of festive holiday sparklers if the governor doesn’t follow his nanny-state lead and veto the bill.

The bill, A6695A, seeks to amend a section of the penal law by reasonably striking from its definition of ‘Fireworks’ and ‘Dangerous Fireworks’ sparkling devices, novelties, toy caps, and similar devices…” The bill would allow sales of such radical terrorist tools from June 1st through July 5th, as well as between December 26th and January 2nd in counties surrounding New York City’s five boroughs.

But the NYC mayor, famous for attempting to impose such draconian measures as a ban on large soft drinks and even Styrofoam, believes passage of the law will benefit terrorists seeking to “harm innocent lives” instead of your average patriotic American trying to get his First or Fourth celebration on.

On Wednesday, Bloomberg’s state legislative director, Joseph Garba, released a memo citing the example of the failed Time Square bomber as justification for the mayor’s asinine overreaction.

“While this bill excludes New York City, legalizing these devices everywhere else in the state would, as a practical matter, have the same effect in the five boroughs,” Garba said in a memo obtained by the New York Post. “A recent attempt to harm innocent lives provides a frightening example of how legally purchased… fireworks can cause dramatic harm and even kill.”

Garba proceeds to use the example of Faisal Shahzad, the person who failed the 2010 Time Square bombing, as justification for wanting to keep the law as is, prohibiting the sale of the traditional, time-honored and relatively harmless Fourth of July staple.

“Shahzad purchased fireworks at a Pennsylvania chain store, transported the fireworks to Connecticut and created a bomb-like device that he transported into New York City with the intent of killing and causing havoc in a busy tourist area,” Garba said, according to the Post.

New York’s Gothamist correctly highlighted the utter stupidity of Bloomberg’s efforts. “Shahzad had to go out of state to buy consumer-grade M-88 firecrackers for his botched attack, and if the current fireworks bill becomes law, would-be terrorists like Shahzad would… still have to go to another state to buy fireworks.”

In respect to Garba’s reference to the failed Times Square bombing, in 2010 Infowars reported that the Pakistani man arrested in connection to the bombing, Sheik Mohammed Rehan had intelligence connections. Rehan had apparently traveled in a pickup truck with Shahzad throughout Pakistan a year before the bombing took place, and was a member of the terrorist organization Jaish-e-Muhammad, a terror cell controlled by the British MI6 and the CIA.

“Since the CIA has its fingerprints all over almost every Middle Eastern terror group, it’s unsurprising that an Agency connection to the Times Square bomber has come to light,” Paul Watson wrote in 2010. “We’ve never come across a terrorist who wasn’t trained, equipped, radicalized, entrapped, or provocateured by a western intelligence agency or a terror group controlled by a western intelligence agency.”

Despite the fact that the FBI orchestrates virtually every terror plot it foils, frequently entrapping witless patsies by supplying them with arms and coaxing them through agent provocateurs, Bloomberg continues his rule through fear campaign trudging out the same old narrative concerning the fabricated menace of terrorism.

Chomsky: The Boston Bombings Gave Americans a Taste of the Terrorism the U.S. Inflicts Abroad Every Day

"It"s rare for privileged Westerners to see, graphically, what many others experience daily"

April is usually a cheerful month in New England, with the first signs of spring, and the harsh winter at last receding. Not this year.

There are few in Boston who were not touched in some way by the marathon bombings on April 15 and the tense week that followed. Several friends of mine were at the finish line when the bombs went off. Others live close to where Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the second suspect, was captured. The young police officer Sean Collier was murdered right outside my office building.

It"s rare for privileged Westerners to see, graphically, what many others experience daily – for example, in a remote village in Yemen, the same week as the marathon bombings.

On April 23, Yemeni activist and journalist Farea Al-Muslimi, who had studied at an American high school, testified before a US Senate committee that right after the marathon bombings, a drone strike in his home village in Yemen killed its target.

The strike terrorized the villagers, turning them into enemies of the United States – something that years of jihadi propaganda had failed to accomplish.

His neighbors had admired the US, Al-Muslimi told the committee, but “Now, however, when they think of America, they think of the fear they feel at the drones over their heads. What radicals had previously failed to achieve in my village, one drone strike accomplished in an instant.”

Rack up another triumph for President Obama"s global assassination program, which creates hatred of the United States and threats to its citizens more rapidly than it kills people who are suspected of posing a possible danger to us someday.

The target of the Yemeni village assassination, which was carried out to induce maximum terror in the population, was well-known and could easily have been apprehended, Al-Muslimi said. This is another familiar feature of the global terror operations.

There was no direct way to prevent the Boston murders. There are some easy ways to prevent likely future ones: by not inciting them. That"s also true of another case of a suspect murdered, his body disposed of without autopsy, when he could easily have been apprehended and brought to trial: Osama bin Laden.

This murder too had consequences. To locate bin Laden, the CIA launched a fraudulent vaccination campaign in a poor neighborhood, then switched it, uncompleted, to a richer area where the suspect was thought to be.

The CIA operation violated fundamental principles as old as the Hippocratic oath. It also endangered health workers associated with a polio vaccination program in Pakistan, several of whom were abducted and killed, prompting the UN to withdraw its anti-polio team.

The CIA ruse also will lead to the deaths of unknown numbers of Pakistanis who have been deprived of protection from polio because they fear that foreign killers may still be exploiting vaccination programs.

Columbia University health scientist Leslie Roberts estimated that 100,000 cases of polio may follow this incident; he told Scientific American that “people would say this disease, this crippled child is because the US was so crazy to get Osama bin Laden.”

And they may choose to react, as aggrieved people sometimes do, in ways that will cause their tormentors consternation and outrage.

Even more severe consequences were narrowly averted. The US Navy SEALs were under orders to fight their way out if necessary. Pakistan has a well-trained army, committed to defending the state. Had the invaders been confronted, Washington would not have left them to their fate. Rather, the full force of the US killing machine might have been used to extricate them, quite possibly leading to nuclear war.

There is a long and highly instructive history showing the willingness of state authorities to risk the fate of their populations, sometimes severely, for the sake of their policy objectives, not least the most powerful state in the world. We ignore it at our peril.

There is no need to ignore it right now. A remedy is investigative reporter Jeremy Scahill"s just-published Dirty Wars: The World Is a Battleground.

In chilling detail, Scahill describes the effects on the ground of US military operations, terror strikes from the air (drones), and the exploits of the secret army of the executive branch, the Joint Special Operations Command, which rapidly expanded under President George W. Bush, then became a weapon of choice for President Obama.

We should bear in mind an astute observation by the author and activist Fred Branfman, who almost single-handedly exposed the true horrors of the US “secret wars” in Laos in the 1960s, and their extensions beyond.

Considering today"s JSOC-CIA-drones/killing machines, Branfman reminds us about the Senate testimony in 1969 of Monteagle Stearns, US deputy chief of mission in Laos from 1969 to 1972.

Asked why the US rapidly escalated its bombing after President Johnson had ordered a halt over North Vietnam in November 1968, Stearns said, “Well, we had all those planes sitting around and couldn"t just let them stay there with nothing to do.” So we can use them to drive poor peasants in remote villages of northern Laos into caves to survive, even penetrating within the caves with our advanced technology.

JSOC and the drones are a self-generating terror machine that will grow and expand, meanwhile creating new potential targets as they sweep much of the world. And the executive won"t want them just “sitting around.”

It wouldn"t hurt to contemplate another slice of history, at the dawn of the 20th century.

In his book “Policing America"s Empire: The United States, the Philippines and the Rise of the Surveillance State,” the historian Alfred McCoy explores in depth the US pacification of the Philippines after an invasion that killed hundreds of thousands through savagery and torture.

The conquerors established a sophisticated surveillance and control system, using the most advanced technology of the day to ensure obedience, with consequences for the Philippines that reach to the present.

And as McCoy demonstrates, it wasn"t long before the successes found their way home, where such methods were employed to control the domestic population – in softer ways to be sure, but not very attractive ones.

We can expect the same. The dangers of unexamined and unregulated monopoly power, particularly in the state executive, are hardly news. The right reaction is not passive acquiescence.

Al-Qaeda terrorism in Britain: Give thanks for the three stooges of Sparkhill

Where Naseer never stopped bragging about his thrilling career, Ali was more subtle. “Oh yah i’m also a terrorist hahahaha,” he added as a jaunty afterthought when filling old school chums in on his activities on Friends Reunited. Doubling down on the deep cover, the group gave an eBay account used for buying bomb components the devilishly encrypted user name “terrorshop” (in Four Lions, Omar rebukes Barry for buying silver nitrate from Amazon). Hard of hearing after a cack-handed DIY attempt to syringe his own ears, Ali is also partially sighted, which may explain his failure to burn more than the edges – a poor omen, this, for the mass incinerations of his dreams – of the bomb-making diagram police found in a bin.

As for the third, “Little” Irfan Khalid has a detached retina, and may also suffer a form of narcolepsy. While he and Naseer were at their terrorist training camp in Afghanistan, they hid beneath a tree from a US drone circling overhead. Big Irfan prayed for a swift death. Little Irfan went to sleep. This was the Irfans’ second crack at camp life. They were expelled from their first when the rigours of training overcame them (one morbidly obese, the other with a serious eye problem; not quite the A-Team, is it?), and were found hiding in a room watching jihadi videos.

By now, the professional conspiracy theorist may be suspecting that this was not in fact a plot conceived by so-called “Nike” terrorists (“Just do it” being the motto such have-a-go antiheroes have borrowed from the footwear firm) but a cunning bluff hatched at al-Qaeda HQ to lull Britain into a lethal sense of misplaced security about the gravity of the domestic threat. Other elements of this bizarre tale reinforce this paranoid delusion.

Of the £14,500 the group raised on the streets of Birmingham to finance their fantasies, by posing as collectors for a Muslim charity, £9,000 was blown in speculation on the international currency markets. An associate, whose tenure as the outfit’s treasurer did not survive the transaction, managed to lose £3,000 in the two minutes it took him to leave his computer and boil the kettle for a nice cup of cha. Chris Morris may be kicking himself for not thinking up that vignette; or the scene in which Khalid yelled “We are the suicide bombers, driving around ready to take on England” at his car passengers in the hysterical tones of the venerable Murray Walker; or their deliberations about whether to renew the car tax disc, before concluding that they need not bother since they would be dead by the time it expired.

The judge described ringleader Naseer as “highly intelligent”, and it is not my place to dispute with the judiciary. Even so, the fact that the only bomb-making component police discovered was a cold pack for sports injuries that lacked the ingredient needed for bombs, ammonium nitrate no longer being used in such products, hints otherwise.

No one can doubt that these crazed buffoons hoped to cause monstrous suffering in accord with an unimaginably warped ideology, and were rightly convicted. Even the Vicky Pryce jury must see that. Yet to read about the Keystone Kops of suicide bombing is to be drawn into that weird, unsettling nexus where grandiose wickedness and comic haplessness meet. Even the “highly intelligent” Naseer’s moral justification for murdering the licentious infidels of Brum – “You think about it, if someone came in your house and started dancing and basically having orgies and smoking drugs and stuff… you would terrorise them, innit?” – sounds more like satire than blood-curdling menace, albeit perhaps less Four Lions than Ali G.

Any temptation to assume that Britain’s good fortune with this enemy within will last is easily resisted, and there are no doubt more competent cells working towards replicating and surpassing the horrors of 7/7. For now, as in 2007 with Glasgow airport bombers foiled by bollards after forgetting to measure the width of their car, you can only give thanks for the abysmal quality of the jihadi farceurs of Sparkhill.
