Walmart manager blasts company policy: Some employees haven’t gotten a raise in nine years

An unidentified Walmart store manager ripped the corporation in an anonymous letter published on Thursday, saying practices have deteriorated over the past two decades.

“Walmart use [sic] to keep giving you raises no matter your hourly rate,” the manager wrote to Gawker. “They now have caps based on position held. I have many associates who have not received a raise in nearly nine years.”

The manager’s letter stated that he began working for the company shortly after the death of founder Sam Walton in 1992, and used to consider himself a defender of Walmart’s policies.

“Walmart was a good company to work for in relations to the retail sector,” he wrote. “However I feel horrible for the associates I have to manage and the struggles they face. I ask this question, How come in 1999 Walmart could pay me over $ 10 an hour but in 2014 I hire people in at $ 8.00 an hour?”

Not only are incoming employees paid less, he said, but they are also ineligible for Christmas bonuses. Also, store managers no longer have the authority to authorize raises; instead, that is decided at the corporate level.

“I could keep going but basically Walmart has been hacking on its benefit and pay structure for years to save on cost,” the manager wrote. “Their over all view point [sic] is that there is little difference in performance and return on investment [between] a ten year associate and a new hire.”

The manager also explained that he could “never send an honest feedback” within the company without fearing for repercussions, saying Walmart had discontinued a feature allowing any employee to submit questions to former chief executive officer Lee Scott.

“Retaliation is alive at Walmart,” the author told Gawker, saying he wrote in using a new email address to further protect himself.

48.6% of Spaniards Aged 18-24 Would Take Any Job, Anywhere, for Low Wages; Ikea Spain Gets 100,000 Applicants for 400 Jobs; Walmart, McDonalds Comparison

48.6% of Spaniards Aged 18-24 Would Take Any Job, Anywhere, for Low Wages; Ikea Spain Gets 100,000 Applicants for 400 Jobs; Walmart, McDonalds Comparison

In contrast to McDonalds’ workers in the US demanding $ 15 an hour wages, Almost half of young Spaniards accept any job, anywhere, despite low salary

48.6% of Spaniards aged 18 to 24 said they would accept any job, anywhere and even with a low income. 84.9% felt very or fairly likely to have to work on what is available, 61.7% considered it equally likely to have to go abroad, and 79.2% said they need to study more. Despite this, an overwhelming majority (80%) are convinced that, at least in the near future, will have to be financially dependent on their family.

Future is Black

Young Spaniards recognize enjoy the benefits of the welfare state far more than their parents, except as regards stability and security. They are also convinced that their children will live much worse than them.

Frustrated Expectations

Only 20% of young people believe things will improve in the next two or three years, compared to 36% who think it will get worse. Moreover, nearly three in four young people (71%) considered likely to find little or no work in the coming year.

Ikea Spain Gets 100,000 Applicants for 400 Jobs

Also via translation from El Economista, please consider Ikea Spain Gets 100,000 Applicants for 400 Jobs

The Swedish multinational Ikea will have work to select staff for a store in Valencia because 100,000 people submitted applications to fill 400 jobs.

Ika received a total of 100,000 job applications through a web page offering. In the first 48 hours of processing, Ikea received 20,000 applications.

The store, which will open in summer, will have a staff of 400 employees and also generate about 80 indirect jobs to cover services such as security, transport and cleaning, among others.

Walmart, McDonalds Comparison

To be fair, there is a major difference between McDonalds’ employees and Spaniards seeking jobs.

The McDonalds’ employees demanding higher wages have jobs. Those seeking jobs, don’t.

However, every McDonalds’ employee knew their wage when they were hired. Like Spaniards willing to accept low wages, they took the jobs anyway.

1 Million McDonalds Applicants

I cannot find anything recent on McDonalds, but on April 28, 2011, Bloomberg reported “McDonald’s and its franchisees hired 62,000 people in the U.S. after receiving more than one million applications, the Oak Brook, Illinois-based company said today in an e-mailed statement. Previously, it said it planned to hire 50,000.

Walmart 23,000 Applicants for 600 Jobs

On November 19, 2013 NBC Washington reported Walmart to Open First D.C. Stores Dec. 4

Walmart’s H Street and Georgia Avenue locations will open Dec. 4 at 8 a.m. Both the 103,000-square-foot Georgia Avenue store and the 74,000-square-foot H Street location will feature fresh produce, a deli, organic food items and a full-service pharmacy.

The stores will hire a combined 600 associates after combing through the more 23,000 applications its received from potential employees.

The arrival of Walmart has not been a smooth one. Both stores were on the verge of never opening after the retail giant threatened to pull its plans if Mayor Vincent Gray signed a living wage bill.

The Large Retailer Accountability Act, known colloquially as the “Walmart Bill,” would have required  the company — and other big-box retailers — to pay its employees a minimum of $ 12.50 an hour.

Gray vetoed the bill in September.

Minimum wage in the District currently stands at $ 8.25 an hour.

Reflections on Living Wages

Take a poll of those employees. I bet 100% of them are happier to have a job at $ 8.25 an hour vs. no job at some presumed “living wage” that they would not get because there were no jobs.

Of course, now that they have a job and should be happy, some union activist is going to try to convince them they shouldn’t be happy.

The Real Problem

Other than a couple of like-minded Austrian bloggers, no one has bothered to complain about the real problem: The Fed pumping money supply like mad, while holding interest rates low.

Five Results

  1. Prices rising faster than wages

  2. Grossly distorted income inequalities

  3. Non-existent price signals

  4. Interest rates that encourage hardware and software solutions to eliminate employees

  5. Equity and bond market bubbles

I blasted the Fed regarding these issues early Friday.

Walmart Sells Out of "Duck Dynasty" Merch in Show of Support

‘Duck Dynasty’ merchandise is flying off Walmart’s digital shelves, with a variety of goods related to the popular A&E reality show out of stock as a furor rages over patriarch Phil Robertson’s anti-gay comments and his TV future.

The Robertson family has a merchandise empire worth $ 400 million, according to Forbes, with sales in Walmart acounting for about half of that amount.

And fans, despite the controversy, aren’t shying away from the Duck paraphernalia, The Daily Mail reported Friday. The array ranges from T-shirts to bedding, posters, watches and toys, but by Friday night, many of the items were listed as “out of stock online.”

Word of the shopping stampede was burning up social media as well, with fans spreading the word via Twitter.

“Duck Dynasty’s multi-million payday: WalMart sold out
A&E fired Phil, but he is LAUGHING ALL THE WAY TO THE BANK,” one tweeter observes, while another urges: “Wal-Mart has sold out of all #DuckDynasty items. Show your support for the Robertson family by purchasing here,” providing a link for the purchase.

The Dailly Mail quoted another tweet: ‘Your stores may look quite vacant when you pull down the Duck Dynasty merch. May want to double down on the Honey Boo Boo.”

A Walmart spokeswoman declined to comment to the newspaper.

According to Forbes, Walmart announced its best-selling item of apparel for both men and women this year was the show’s T-shirt.

“Walmart publicly dumped Paula Deen after the Southern chef’s headline-grabbing allegations of racism this past summer, although you can still find her cookware on Walmart.com,” wrote Forbes scribe Clare O’Connor.

“The question is whether the powers that be in Bentonville, Ark. believe Robertson’s vile homophobia will anger their shoppers the same way they clearly imagined Deen’s apparent racism would.”

The Robertson clan warned that they “cannot imagine” doing the A&E series without patriarch Phil Robertson who has been suspended indefinitely after he told GQ magazine that homosexuality was a sin and compared it to bestiality, among other things.

A&E has yet to publicly clarify what the future of the show might be, what they’ll do with their block of reruns, or what the suspension means, CNN reported Friday night.

Wal-Mart labor group promises 1,500 Black Friday protests next week

Wal-Mart labor group promises 1,500 Black Friday protests next week

The group behind the past year’s Wal-Mart strikes pledged Thursday to back an unprecedented 1,500 protests for “Black Friday” next week, but stopped short of predicting an increase in the number of Wal-Mart employees on strike compared to last year.

“Americans across the country are hearing us, and they are saying that they too want Wal-Mart to change,” Colorado Wal-Mart employee Barbara Gertz told reporters on a mid-day call. Gertz is an activist with the non-union worker group OUR Walmart, which is closely tied to the United Food & Commercial Workers union. As Salon first reported, OUR Walmart began mounting Wal-Mart work stoppages last fall, following five decades entirely free of coordinated Wal-Mart walkouts in the United States. Columbia political scientist Dorian Warren told reporters on OUR Walmart’s call that just as strikers after World War Two turned General Motors from “the embodiment of all that was wrong with our economy” into a corporation which “eventually represented the American dream of upward mobility,” Wal-Mart strikers were now facing down a company which “represents the death of the American dream.” Wal-Mart did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Like last year, OUR Walmart has backed a wave of one-day strikes in the weeks leading up to “Black Friday,” the high-profile, record-revenue shopping day that follows Thanksgiving. An employee who joined a walkout in Dallas yesterday told reporters that she and her husband “went on strike not only for ourselves and our family, but also for countless Wal-Mart workers who are afraid to speak out about poverty wages because of retaliation.” Wal-Mart has terminated at least twenty workers who joined a longer June strike, a move OUR Walmart charges violates federal law. The company maintains it did not illegally retaliate. The federal National Labor Relations Board announced this week that it had found enough evidence to issue a complaint against the company for labor law violations. A delegation of five fired workers is headed to Arkansas to seek a meeting with the company’s US CEO at which they would ask to be returned to their jobs.

Strikes against Walmart have anchored and amplified a comprehensive campaign targeting the company’s brand and ambitions, which received a major media boost this week with the report that an Ohio Wal-Mart took up an employee-to-employee charity collection to help workers get a Thanksgiving meal.

According to OUR Walmart, the 1,500 Black Friday protests will include major demonstrations in over a dozen cities including Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, and Washington DC. The campaign has said that last year’s Black Friday actions included tens of thousands of supporters and over four hundred striking Wal-Mart employees. Asked whether this year’s Black Friday will include strikes by a larger share of Wal-Mart’s 1.3 million employees, UFCW official and key OUR Walmart strangest Dan Schlademan told Salon that more announcements regarding strikes would be forthcoming. “The energy we’re seeing in support of Wal-Mart workers is growing,” said Schlademan, adding that strikes would take place “throughout the week of Black Friday, but we’ll make those announcements closer to that point.”

Walmart EBT Card Food Stamps Glitch Clears Stores" Shelves

Shoppers cleared the shelves at two Louisiana Walmart stores over the weekend when a glitch in the government’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system allowed welfare recipients to use their debit-style food stamps cards to buy unlimited goods without the usual spending cap.

Managers at Walmart stores in Mansfield and Springhill, La., were forced to call police Saturday after people realized the glitch in the EBT system and rushed to load up carts with as many items as they could carry, CBS affiliate KSLA reported.

“It was worse than any black Friday,” Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd said of the frenzied shopping scene.

Editor’s Note: ObamaCare Is Here. Are You Prepared?

The glitch, which was reportedly caused during a routine maintenance test by EBT card servicer Xerox Corp., made it so cashiers could not view card limits, allowing customers the ability to spend limitlessly.

“We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards during the outage so that they could get food for their families,” Walmart representative Kayla Whaling told KSLA. She claimed that Walmart was “fully engaged and monitoring the situation and transactions during the outage.”

The system began working properly around 9 p.m. Saturday, leading people to abandon their overflowing shopping carts in the aisles.

When the system got back online, one woman had just rung up a $ 700 bill at the register and was turned away because she only had a balance of $ 0.49 on her card, Lynd said.

The same EBT card glitch caused just the opposite problem for shoppers in 17 other states over the weekend when their cards wouldn’t go through, according to USA Today.

U.S. Department of Agriculture spokeswoman Courtney Rowe emphasized that the outage was not related to the federal government shutdown.

Walmart EBT Card Food Stamps Glitch Clears Stores" Shelves

Wal-Mart Shelves Cleared During Food Stamp Card "Glitch"

MANSFIELD, LA (KSLA-TV) – Shelves in Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, LA were reportedly cleared Saturday night, when the stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though they were not showing limits.

Wal-Mart Shelves Cleared During Food Stamp Card "Glitch"

WALMART SHELVES CLEARED DURING FOOD STAMP PANIC

MANSFIELD, LA (KSLA) -

Shelves in Walmart stores in Springhill and Mansfield, LA were reportedly cleared Saturday night, when the stores allowed purchases on EBT cards even though they were not showing limits.

The chaos that followed ultimately required intervention from local police, and left behind numerous carts filled to overflowing, apparently abandoned when the glitch-spurred shopping frenzy ended.

Springhill Police Chief Will Lynd confirms they were called in to help the employees at Walmart because there were so many people clearing off the shelves. He says Walmart was so packed, “It was worse than any black Friday” that he’s ever seen.

Lynd explained the cards weren’t showing limits and they called corporate Walmart, whose spokesman  said to let the people use the cards anyway. From 7 to 9 p.m., people were loading up their carts, but when the cards began showing limits again around 9, one woman was detained because she rang up a bill of $ 700.00 and only had .49 on her card. She was held by police until corporate Walmart said they wouldn’t press charges if she left the food.

Lynd says at 9 p.m., when the cards came back online and it was announced over the loud speaker, people just left their carts full of food in the aisles and left.

“Just about everything is gone, I’ve never seen it in that condition,” said Mansfield Walmart customer Anthony Fuller.

Walmart employees could still be seen putting food from the carts away as late as Sunday afternoon. “I was just thinking, I’m so glad my mom doesn’t work here [Walmart] anymore, that’s the only thing I could think about, those employees working, that would have to restock all that stuff,” said O.J Evans who took cell phone video of the overflowing shopping carts at the Mansfield Walmart.

Evans believes it was natural human reaction that led people to fill up their carts during the glitch, but Walmart shoppers Stan and Judy Garcia feel very differently. ”That’s plain theft, that’s stealing that’s all I got to say about it,” said Garcia.

Lynd says contrary to rumors, nobody was unruly or arrested and they were mainly there to help prevent shoplifting and theft.

A dispatcher for Mansfield police also confirms officers were called in for crowd control at the Mansfield Walmart. She said the shelves were cleared out, forcing Walmart to stop selling food at 9 p.m. There were no arrests.

There was, however, a huge mess left behind. Pictures and videos obtained by KSLA News 12 show aisles packed with shoppers emptying the shelves in Springhill. Another video shows what appear to be at least dozens of overflowing carts left abandoned in the aisles at the Mansfield store, against the backdrop of emptied shelves in the meat department.

It all happened at the end of a day in which the EBT system went down in several states, including Louisiana. Xerox, a vendor for the EBT system, experienced a power outage while conducting a routine backup test in one of the company’s locations. While the system was back up Saturday night, it appears that it was not functioning entirely properly in some areas.

Kayla Whaling, a spokesperson for Walmart, tells KSLA News 12 that the company was “fully engaged and monitoring the situation and transactions during the outage.”

“We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards (and purchases on WIC and SNAP) during the outage so that they could get food for their families.”

Asked whether Walmart would be taking the loss on any food purchased on the cards that did not show limits, or on the perishable food left behind in carts, Whaling would only say that “we monitored transactions during the outage.”

A spokesperson for the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services says they take all allegations of potential fraud seriously, they are aware of the reports and they will be investigating.

Food stamp recipients empty Walmart shelves during system glitch

Some Walmart stores in Louisiana allowed food stamp recipients to shop despite the fact that the computer system was down and it was impossible to know how much in benefits the shopper could access.

A dispatcher for Mansfield police also confirms officers were called in for crowd control at the Mansfield Walmart. She said the shelves were cleared out, forcing Walmart to stop selling food at 9 p.m. There were no arrests.

Carts overflowing with food left in the middle of aisles after it was announced that the EBT cards now showed limits.

A “natural human reaction?” Stealing is a conscious choice, hardly natural. Also, how did so many people get word that the store wasn’t checking limits? Some sort of network must have been in use – perhaps social media via phone.

If it turns out that dozens of people went over their limit I wonder if Walmart will look at the thousands of dollars in lost sales and be so magnanimous about not pressing charges.

(Reuters) – In another setback for women suing Wal-Mart, a U.S. judge in San Francisco on Friday rejected an attempt to bring reformulated sex discrimination claims against the company as a class action.

U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer denied a motion for class certification brought by plaintiffs seeking to represent 150,000 women in Wal-Mart’s California offices who alleged the world’s largest retailer denied them pay raises and promotions because of their gender.

The claims were filed as a reformulated lawsuit after the U.S. Supreme Court threw out a larger class-action sex discrimination against Wal-Mart Stores Inc in 2011 that claimed female employees at 3,400 Walmart stores nationwide were underpaid and given fewer promotions.

The California lawsuit was part of a broader strategy by women Wal-Mart workers to bring more narrowly tailored class actions in an attempt to seek damages, targeting Wal-Mart’s employment practices in regions throughout the country.

Instead of relying on nationwide statistical patterns and anecdotal evidence provided by plaintiffs, the California lawsuit had alleged specific discriminatory statements made by the district and regional managers that have decision-making authority over pay and promotions.

Breyer said in his ruling that the women could not bring their allegations as a class action because they had not established that their claims of the company’s employment practice were linked to a class-wide policy.

But he said: “This order does not consider whether plaintiffs themselves were victims of discrimination as alleged in their complaint; those individual claims shall proceed in this litigation.”

Still, Breyer took issue with some of the merits of the plaintiffs case. For one, he said that the women did not identify statistically significant disparities in pay and promotion decisions throughout the California regions at issue.

Breyer also noted that the women said they had anecdotes reflecting stereotyped views expressed by a number of regional managers, but only offered evidence of bias exhibited by about five percent of the top level management that they say guided lower-level decisions.

“Though plaintiffs succeeded in illustrating attitudes of gender bias held by managers at Wal-Mart, they failed to marshal significant proof that intentional discrimination was a general policy affecting the entire class,” Breyer said.

A Wal-Mart spokesman said in a statement that the company has had a strong policy against discrimination in place for many years, and that the allegations from the plaintiffs were not representative of the positive experiences of other women working at Wal-Mart.

“Judge Breyer gave the plaintiffs every opportunity to offer any evidence they wanted, and their evidence comes up short,” said Theodore Boutrous, a lawyer representing Wal-Mart. “We are gratified.”

Randy Renick, a lawyer for the plaintiffs, said in a statement that plaintiffs were “deeply disappointed” with the court’s decision and intended to appeal the ruling.

“While this court decision does not in any way negate the merits of the pay and promotion discrimination case against Wal-Mart, it does create yet another hurdle for these women to at long last have their day in court,” he said.
