Hillary Clinton, Pussy Riot, and Shameless Propaganda

The Iron Maiden recently did a photo op with Pussy Riot, the punk group that served time for holding a guerrilla performance inside a Russian Orthodox church.

Pussy Riot is said to be against the dictatorial policies of Vladimir Putin. One wonders if they consider Madame Clinton, who has admitted following the policies of the Council on Foreign Relations – a globalist directorate ultimately no less authoritarian in approach – any less despicable.

If Pussy Riot was an American protest music group going up against the establishment Hillary serves – the CFR, the Trilateral Commission, Bilderberg, and the shadow government interlocked with banks and transnational corporations – one has to wonder if Hillary would be as enthusiastic.

Poor Pussy Riot. Like no shortage of Americans, they are politically clueless and easily manipulated. They are useful idiots.

Propaganda for Dummies?

For those of us who grew up in the ’80s—or, alternatively, if you just happened to watch a fair amount of TV during that glorious era—the term “Very Special Episode” may elicit some fond and funny memories.

The “Very Special Episode,” as Wikipedia describes it, refers “to an episode of a sitcom or television drama that deals with a serious or controversial social issue.” A normally silly show, for instance, would suddenly gain some gravitas as a cautionary tale: Alex P. Keaton frantically popping amphetamines in “Family Ties”; Kimberly and Arnold getting kidnapped by a dastardly stranger on “Diff’rent Strokes”; Cherie hiding in a dangerous old refrigerator in “Punky Brewster.” One of the most infamous Very Special Episodes comes from the early-’90s show “Saved by the Bell,” when classic type-A overachiever Jessie Spano becomes addicted to … wait for it … caffeine pills. (A more innocent time, then.)

Very Special Episodes were often canned, hokey, preachy, and over the top (one highlight from “Family Matters” showed nerdy Steve Erkel getting deliriously drunk at a party, flopping off a dance floor, mysteriously rocketing out of a window, and landing on a window ledge 10 feet away, left dangling above death’s open door.) In the new millennium, where irony, worldliness, and sarcasm reign, one would think we’re in more sophisticated—or at least more disillusioned—times, deserving of more subtle, artistic, propaganda. Think Sundance. Think Banksy, the mysterious street artist. Think Bon Iver, the woodsy, misty poetry slam/musical act, or whoever the new Bon Iver is.

Nope. Witness “Between Two Ferns,” a faux Internet talk show featured on the humor website Funny or Die. Hosted by “Hangover” star Zach Galifianakis, each episode features awkward, insulting, and often amusing exchanges with celebrities like Bruce Willis (“How many children do you have? Which is your favorite—Ashton?”), Justin Bieber (“It’s really exciting to talk to you, especially right in the middle of your public meltdown”) and Natalie Portman (mostly awkward silence). The show is usually pretty funny. This week, to the delight of some and the chagrin of others, the featured guest was our own commander-in-chief, Barack Obama.

It was not subtle. After 3½ minutes of perfunctory but decent jokes, the president launched into an earnest, two-minute speech explaining why every young, healthy person (not coincidentally, the target demographic of Funny or Die) needed to sign up for Obamacare (“at HealthCare.gov!”) by March 31. Young people need to do this, of course, because the massive, clunky, tangled mess of a health insurance scheme Obama pasted together with Krazy Glue will otherwise collapse into a heaping pile of smoking rubble, crushed banjos, unicorn tears, and shattered dreams. (He didn’t actually say that last part, but the veiled desperation was pretty clear.)

As propaganda efforts go, in terms of gaining eyeballs, this one wasn’t half bad: At press time, the video had earned 12 million views. Whether a significant portion of those eyeballs then went to HealthCare.gov is still under debate. According to Tara McGuinness, a White House senior communications adviser, traffic on the enrollment website surged “almost 40 percent” since the video aired. Other numbers aren’t so flattering: As of 6 p.m. on the first day it aired, the Funny or Die video had 6 million views—but only 32,000 viewers clicked through to HealthCare.gov.

Whether that traffic will convert into actual sign-ups from actual healthy young people remains to be seen. Many of them might, for instance, discover that their Obamacare options cost just a wee bit more than what the president promised—the same cost as “your cellphone bill!”—in his now-viral interview. (Interestingly, in a recent town-hall presentation with Spanish-language media, the president suggested that people might have to “prioritize,” cutting out their cable or cellphones to pay for Obamacare. Hmm.)

Most of the criticism of Obama’s appearance on Funny or Die has centered on the somewhat anachronistic question of whether it was in some way “beneath” or “demeaning to” the office of the presidency. That ship has clearly sailed: Modern media is modern media, and presidents are likely smart to embrace it. Far more interesting, however, is another question: What does it mean for our culture when what is marketed to be “hip” and “subversive” and “edgy”—and widely accepted as such—comes off more like an obvious, preachy ’80s sitcom?

Watching Obama desperately wedge a two-minute policy request into a purported comedy appearance was cringe-worthy, but not in the funny, in-the-know way that “Between Two Ferns” intends. In fact, it was strikingly reminiscent of another recent piece of pop culture propaganda, when Lena Dunham, left-wing activist, star of “Girls,” and all-around media darling, appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” In a painful, plodding skit involving a hapless “men’s rights activist” accidentally attending a women’s jewelry party, Dunham inserts a labored speech defending the honor of Planned Parenthood, “a place where women can go for low-cost medical advice and care!” That was pretty much the point of the skit. It sounded like she was talking to very small, unfriendly children. It was, in short, a very weird, completely-devoid-of-funny Very Special Episode.

Americans, unfortunately, are apparently getting used to being treated like kindergarteners. Each year, the government spends hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars on “public service announcements”—I’ve personally seen highway signs telling me how to safely cook food and brush my teeth in the past few months—and outright propaganda, including $ 684 million on Obamacare promotions alone. I suppose we should all feel grateful that Obama took a freebie when it came to “Between Two Ferns,” as it may be the first and only Obamacare-related activity that won’t cost everyone an arm and a leg.

But we should also, perhaps, be a little bit insulted. As the host of “Between Two Ferns,” Zach Galifianakis plays a self-absorbed, awkward, combative mess who can’t get anything right. As the on-air recipient of Barack Obama’s condescending health care monologue, he also serves as a metaphorical stand-in for the speech’s real target audience: the American people, and particularly young people. That’s not a flattering comparison. Obama’s appearance on “Between Two Ferns” may have been a lot of things, but one is worth remembering: It offers a pretty clear image of the dopes he thinks we really are.

False Science: How Paid Propaganda Masquerades as Scientific Progress

What Most People Think They Know About Marijuana Is Unscientific, Paranoid and Even Racist Propaganda

Don"t believe the marijuana hype.

This article first appeared at The Fix, with coverage on addiction and recovery, straight up.

Everyone thinks they know something about drugs—whether from personal experience or from 8th grade prevention classes or simply because the media presents so many stories about them. Unfortunately, most of what people think they know is inaccurate, and comes from years of government war-on-drugs propaganda, with little understanding of itsmedical and historical context.

Take some of the recent absurd anti-marijuana columns and tweets from some of the backbones of the media establishment: the New York Times’ David BrooksRuth Marcus of the Washington Post and Tina Brown, former New Yorker editor and founder of the Daily Beast.

Both Brooks and Marcus told stories of their own youthful pot smoking—neither of which seems to have led to any lasting negative consequences as is the case for the overwhelming majority of marijuana users. Yet both claimed—without apparently understanding that relying on a single study that has been questioned in a follow up by the same journal is not accurately reporting “fact”—that marijuana definitively lowers IQ.

And neither mentioned the elephant in the room: the fact that marijuana laws are mainly enforced against black people and that arresting millions and saddling them with criminal records hasn’t prevented around half of the adult population (white and black) from trying weed. It has, however, meant that black people have reduced opportunities to get jobs with organizations like the Times or the Post while Brooks and Marcus never faced arrest.

Conveniently, the columnists also left out the fact that countries like Portugal that have decriminalized marijuana (or countries like Holland that tolerate some commercial sales of marijuana) actually havelower rates of youth drug use than we do.

Meanwhile, Tina Brown also tweeted that marijuana makes people stupid and legalization will reduce our ability to compete with China. Suffice it to say that she has little evidence for such a claim—one might argue based on equally flimsy data that it enhances creativity and popular culture, which is one of our true strengths—but that wouldn’t sound appropriately “serious.”

And right there is the problem: columnists and journalists who write about drugs rarely question conventional wisdom or go beyond cherry-picking of data to support what they already “know.”

But why are we so gullible in this area, when reporters are supposed to be skeptical? One reason has got to be the fact that over the last 40 years, the government has spent billions of dollars on advertising and even planted media articles and messages in TV shows aiming to get us all to “just say no.” While these campaigns are often ineffective at preventing use, they do seem to work at clouding perception.

And the truth is seen as immaterial in the drug war. Written into the job description of the “drug czar” by Congress is that whoever heads the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) must “take such actions as necessary to oppose any attempt to legalize the use of a substance (in any form)” that is currently illegal, regardless of the facts. When asked about its distribution of “misleading information”—by a Congressman, in fact—ONDCP cited this provision to justify doing so, saying that this is “within the statutory role assigned to ONDCP.” In other words, they have to lie.

Rare is the journalist who will admit to having fallen for this outright propaganda, which is why last year’s confession by CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta that he was wrong about marijuana was so stunning.

On CNN’s website, he wrote:

I mistakenly believed the Drug Enforcement Agency listed marijuana as a schedule 1 substance because of sound scientific proof. Surely, they must have quality reasoning as to why marijuana is in the category of the most dangerous drugs that have “no accepted medicinal use and a high potential for abuse.”

They didn"t have the science to support that claim, and I now know that when it comes to marijuana neither of those things are true. It doesn"t have a high potential for abuse, and there are very legitimate medical applications.

The truth is that our perceptions of marijuana—and in fact all of our drug laws—are based on early 20th century racism and “science” circa the Jim Crow era. In the early decades of the 20th century, the drug was linked to Mexican immigrants and black jazzmen, who were seen as potentially dangerous.

Harry Anslinger, the first commissioner of the Federal Bureau of Narcotics (an early predecessor of the DEA), was one of the driving forces behind pot prohibition. He pushed it for explicitly racist reasons, saying, “Reefer makes darkies think they"re as good as white men,” and:

“There are 100,000 total marijuana smokers in the U.S., and most are Negroes, Hispanics, Filipinos and entertainers. Their Satanic music, jazz and swing result from marijuana use. This marijuana causes white women to seek sexual relations with Negroes, entertainers and any others.”

The main reason to prohibit marijuana, he said was “its effect on the degenerate races.” (And god forbid women should sleep with entertainers!)

Although it sounds absurd now, it was this type of propaganda that caused the drug to be outlawed in 1937—along with support from the Hearst newspapers, which ran ads calling marijuana “the assassin of youth” and published stories about how it led to violence and insanity. Anslinger remained as head of federal narcotics efforts as late as 1962, whereafter he spread his poisonous message to the world as the American representative to the U.N. for drug policy for a further two years.

Before marijuana was made illegal, the American Medical Association’s opposition to prohibition was ignored, as was an earlier report on marijuana in India by the British government, which did not find marijuana to be particularly addictive or dangerous. That “Indian Hemp Drugs Committee” reporthad concluded way back in 1894 that, “The moderate use of hemp drugs is practically attended by no evil results at all.”

Pundits and columnists who make pronouncements about marijuana’s dangers seem willfully ignorant of this history, which is easy to check via any online search engine. Its seems unlikely that Brooks, Marcus and Brown would want their names associated with a law that is both explicitly racist in intent—and continuingly racist in outcome.

But until we treat drug issues as medical and scientific questions, we will be doomed to continue this bigoted legacy—and we will not be able to treat addiction as the health issue that it is.

So, just say know when it comes to drugs—and be sure what you know is based in science, not ancient biased nonsense. (Though, on second thought, Anslinger may have had a point about the inadvisability of sexual relations with entertainers, particularly musicians.)

AP editors: Obama relies on staged propaganda photos

AP editors: Obama relies on staged propaganda photosThe Daily Caller – by Robby Soave

Editors of The Associated Press condemned the White House’s refusal to give photojournalists real access to President Obama, who prefers to circulate press release-style pictures taken by his own paid photographers.

These official photographs are little more than propaganda, according to AP director of photography Santiago Lyon.

The AP has only been permitted to photograph the president in the Oval Office on two occasions. Both were during his first term. All other pictures of Obama in his office were taken by White House photographers and distributed to the press.

Previous administrations were less strict about photos, undermining Obama’s frequent claim that he strives to run “the most transparent administration” in history.

Lyon made his remarks at the AP Media Editors national conference in Indianapolis on Wednesday.

AP executive editor Kathleen Carroll echoed Lyon’s concerns.

“This works because newspapers use these handout photos,” she said at the conference, according to attendee Jack Lail, digital editor of the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Carroll advised newspaper editors who were present to stop using the White House’s preferred photos in their own stories, according to Lail and other attendees.

This is not the first time the AP has insinuated that Obama’s photo policy is bad for modern journalism. Editors at the country’s largest wire service began complaining about Obama’s autocratic media strategy during his first campaign for the presidency in 2008.

They even sent a letter to the Obama campaign that said, “There are many ways in a campaign to control your message and conduct private meetings that do not involve deceiving the press corps.”

In April of this year, the AP renewed its criticisms in an article titled “Controlling the narrative while limiting media access.”

“[The Obama White House] is limiting press access in ways that past administrations wouldn’t have dared, and the president is answering to the public in more controlled settings than his predecessors,” wrote the AP. “It’s raising new questions about what’s lost when the White House tries to make an end run around the media, functioning, in effect, as its own news agency.”

The article quoted Mike McCurry, press secretary to former President Bill Clinton, as saying that Obama exercises a level of control over the media far beyond previous presidents.

“What gets lost are those revealing moments when the president’s held accountable by the representatives of the public who are there in the form of the media,” said McCurry.

The history of White House photography suggests barring photographers in this way may even limit Obama’s propaganda power. Photojournalists snapped many of the best-remembered Oval Office photos, including the picture of a backlit President John F. Kennedy with his head bowed, which was shot by New York Times photographer George Tames. That photo, dubbed “The Loneliest Job In the World,” went on to become an icon of the Cuban Missile Crisis, although it was snapped several months before the crisis and simply showed the president reading a newspaper while standing, to relieve his back pain. During the actual missile crisis, JFK reportedly left the Oval Office to join fabled stripper Blaze Starr in the Lincoln Bedroom for what Starr called a “very short” encounter.

Hollywood Propaganda: American “Heros” and Somali “Savages” – “Captain Phillips” Obscures US Crimes in Somalia

captain phillips

Captain Phillips is a movie about the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama commercial container ship by Somali pirates. Pirates, one of Americans’ most beloved figures—consider the popularity of the recent Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy—are loathsome savages in this film. They kill their own, abandon their own, don’t aid their own when they are injured, and are portrayed as generally lacking in even the most rudimentary forms of human compassion. By contrast, Tom Hanks, who plays the eponymous Captain Phillips, urges the Somali pirates to treat their wounded; expresses paternal concern for his captors—“What are you, sixteen, seventeen? You’re too young to be out here doing this”; conveys indignation over the pirates’ conduct—“Is this how you do business? By shooting people?”; and repeatedly tells the hijackers that they could leave, right now, with $ 30,000, no questions asked—evoking a smarmy game show host (I kept picturing Regis Philbin).

I suppose the idea is that the pirates weren’t acting out of desperation, but greed. Apparently, casting wasn’t on the same page, since the actors portraying the pirates are cadaverously thin. Though it wouldn’t surprise me if, in our merciless age of austerity, starvation wasn’t regarded as justification for theft. Perhaps if the pirates had raided pensions instead of corporate freighters the film would’ve treated them more charitably.

Phillips, who by the end of the film is shown arms tied to the wall, producing a cruciform image, falls short of his role as Christ figure. The ship’s chief engineer told CNN, “it was the captain’s recklessness that steered them into pirate-infested waters.” Crew members said that Phillips pursued this dangerous route in order to save money. Now the crew is suing the shipping corporation for putting them in harm’s way, with Phillips playing a nasty role in the lawsuit. To quote a Businessweek headline on the topic, “Hero of Captain Phillips Movie Portrayed as Villain in Lawsuit”.

Though the extent to which Phillips falls short of the movie’s exaltation is somewhat surprising, the film’s depiction of Somalis is not. Somalis have served as convenient villains for Hollywood in the past. Blackhawk Down portrayed Somalis as ruthless and bloodthirsty, while making sure to depict Americans as honoring every life. Unfortunately, the facts don’t support this narrative. In the real Blackhawk Down incident, 1,000 Somalis were killed as US rangers dropped into a crowded marketplace. The film was so distorted in its depiction of Somalis that the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in California called for a boycott of the movie, saying it “portrays Somalis as violent savages”.

Captain Phillips is keen to mention that the Maersk Alabama was carrying some humanitarian aid, but neglects to mention the US’ extensive crimes in the region. For example, the US supported the brutal dictator of Somalia, Siad Barre, until his loss of power in 1991. The US’ “humanitarian” mission, “Operation Restore Hope”, killed 7,000–10,000 Somalis and resulted in a civil war, famine, and political chaos.

In 2001 the US closed al Barakaat, a money transfer company, claiming that it was being used to funnel money to al Qaeda. The organization had no connection to al Qaeda, and thousands of poverty-stricken Somalis depended on the money transferred through al Barakaat from family abroad. Somalia specialist Michel Del Buono stated that the decision to close al Barakaat was “equivalent to killing civilians”.

In 2006 it came out that the US had been financing warlords in Somalia. These warlords created death squads that terrorized the country by killing or capturing anyone who supported Islamic movements. Some of those captured by the death squads were turned over to the US for money, where they weretortured.

In response to the terrorism of the US-backed warlords, religious factions began to unite to fight off the warlords. The factions united under the name, The Union of Islamic Courts. The UIC ushered in a justice system as well as stability, which allowed the unrestricted delivery of aid to malnourished Somalis. By 2006 the UIC had united almost all of Somalia. The top UN official on Somalia, Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, stated that the time of the UIC rule was the “golden era” and the only break from the steady stream of misery for Somalis. The UIC was the first semblance of a stable central government in 15 years.

A leaked diplomatic cable published by Wikileaks revealed that the US wouldn’t tolerate the UIC gaining control of Somalia. The Bush administration likely believed the UIC would be too independent from US influence and mistakenly saw the UIC as sheltering radical Islamists.

In 2006 the US backed Ethiopia’s invasion of Somalia. It was a characteristic US proxy war with US troops on the ground, US intelligence informing strategy, and US air power providing support. The invasion turned into a brutal 2-year occupation, displacing hundreds of thousands and killing 16,000 civilians.

Rob Wise at the Center for Strategic and International Studies says the Ethiopian occupation transformed al Shabaab from a very weak force in Somalia to “the most powerful and radical faction in the country”.

Perhaps most repulsive element of Captain Phillips is its failure to give any explanation for why there are pirates operating off the coast of Somalia. There is no mention of the US role in making Somalia a failed state unable to have a coast guard. The result is that the fishing waters have become ruined by foreigner’s over-fishing and European, Asian, and Gulf companies dumping toxic and nuclear waste into Somali costal waters. The unguarded waters are free trashcans for companies, which would have to pay expensive fees to dispose of their waste elsewhere. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, the UN envoy for Somalia, said, “There is uranium radioactive waste, there is lead, there are heavy metals like cadmium, and mercury, there is industrial waste, hospital, and chemical wastes.” He continued, “Radioactive waste is potentially killing Somalis and completely destroying the ocean.”

After 20 years of continual famine, civil war, and the destruction of the ocean, fishermen were left with few options, so they began to engage in piracy.

In 2007 the UN noted that Somalia had higher malnutrition rates, more bloodshed, and fewer aid workers than Darfur. Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah described Somalia’s plight as “the worst on the continent”.

The West has been complicit in the destruction of Somalia for 20 years, but physical destruction of Somalia isn’t enough. Hollywood must destroy the character of the Somali people. There may be no act of propaganda more depraved than portraying the victims of your savage aggression as the aggressors.

BBC Caught Staging Syria Chemical Weapons Propaganda?

Former Ambassador labels video “stunning fakery”

A video of a BBC interview with a doctor in Syria in the aftermath of a napalm-style attack appears to have been artificially dubbed to falsely make reference to the incident being a “chemical weapons” attack, a clip that represents “a stunning bit of fakery,” according to former UK Ambassador Craig Murray.

The news report was first released on August 29, just days before an attack on Syria seemed inevitable, and served to further the narrative that military action was necessary to halt atrocities being committed by President Bashar Al-Assad’s forces.

The first clip is from the original interview with British medic Dr Rola Hallam, from the Hand in Hand for Syria charity. She states;

“..It’s just absolute chaos and carnage here, erm we’ve had a massive influx of
what looks like serious burns, er seems like it must be some sort of, I’m not
really sure, maybe napalm, something similar to that..”

However, in the second clip, which is from the exact same interview, her words are slightly altered.

“..It’s just absolute chaos and carnage here, erm we’ve had a massive influx of
what looks like serious burns, er seems like it must be some sort of chemical
weapon, I’m not really sure..”

The second clip seems to have been artificially dubbed to characterize the event as a “chemical weapon” attack rather than an incendiary bomb attack. Hallam’s mouth is hidden by a mask, making the dub impossible to detect without referring to the original clip.

The clip has sparked frenzied analysis by numerous Internet users, who point out that the background noise in the clip that uses the “chemical weapon” quote is different from the original. The BBC has been asked to explain the discrepancy but has so far not responded.

“I suspect the motive in this instance and others by the BBC are propaganda intended to affect public opinion in the UK in such a way as to congregate support and underpin an offensive against the Syrian government,” writes one user who closely analyzed the audio.

Former British Ambassador to Uzbekistan Craig Murray said the video represented, “Irrefutable evidence of a stunning bit of fakery by the BBC,” adding that the woman’s words could have been faked in their entirety.

“The disturbing thing is the footage of the doctor talking is precisely the same each time. It is edited so as to give the impression the medic is talking in real time in her natural voice – there are none of the accepted devices used to indicate a voiceover translation. But it must be true that in at least one, and possibly both, the clips she is not talking in real time in her own voice. It is very hard to judge as her mouth and lips are fully covered throughout. Perhaps neither of the above is what she actually said.”

“Terrible things are happening all the time in Syria’s civil war, between Assad’s disparate forces and still more disparate opposition forces, and innocent people are suffering. There are dreadful crimes against civilians on all sides. I have no desire at all to downplay or mitigate that. But once you realise the indisputable fact of the fake interview the BBC has put out, some of the images in this video begin to be less than convincing on close inspection too.”

A link to Murray’s blog on the issue was also tweeted by Wikileaks, the whistleblower organization, under the headline,’ BBC puts out fake video with Syrian medic claiming chemical weapons.’

This would by no means be the first time that evidence of war crimes has been staged in order to lay the blame on Bashar Al-Assad’s forces.

As we have previously highlighted, there are numerous videos showing supporters of the western backed FSA staging fake injuries and deaths for propaganda purposes.

Honors Class Subjected To Radical Islamic Propaganda

Islam Honors class subjected to radical Islamic propaganda

Hendersonville High School is rightfully under fire after an honors class received a reprehensibly one-sided lesson on religion.

During the three-week study, the group of freshmen went on a field trip to a nearby Islamic mosque and left with copies of the Koran. At no point were the students offered a similar trip to either a Jewish or Christian place of worship.

The outing also consisted of a reading from the Koran, according to one parent, and followed a trip to a Hindu temple during which the class studied meditation.

Naturally, the course elicited outrage from some of the parents of students involved, including one father who said the school claimed that a lack of funding prohibited trips to other sites.

While students were afforded the option to stay at school during the visit, reports indicate the alternate assignment was equally abhorrent.

Mike Conner said his daughter chose not to take the trip and was forced to draft a comparative essay describing Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism. The resources associated with the assignment were hopelessly biased in favor of the Islamic faith, he noted, explaining his daughter was presented with five times more material about Muhammed’s teachings than those of Jesus Christ.

Conner contends that the school is trying to make students “tolerant of everything except Christianity,” and additional worksheets included in the assignment seem to bolster his assertion.

One portion of the assignment, dealing with the purported “tolerance” of Islam, states that Muhammad “was prepared to live in peace” with other religions, “especially Judaism and Christianity.”

Furthermore, the worksheet stated that Islamic conquerors “did not impose their religion” in other lands and even treated religious minorities better than Americans treat minorities in this country.

Conner explained that his daughter received a failing grade for the day, choosing to write a critique of the assignment rather than a religious comparison based on insufficient and misleading information. He explained that a subsequent meeting with administrators at the school was “very confrontational,” noting his daughter’s grade was not changed and she was not afforded the opportunity to complete an alternate assignment.

“They told us we were being hostile towards Islam,” he said. In fact, the only hostility shown was by the school toward those who dare to expect a balanced curriculum.

The school district issued a statement explaining they would no longer facilitate field trips to places of worship, though this decision does not address the root of the issue. In public schools, a glaring double standard exists in the treatment of various religions. While textbooks and teachers routinely play up the occasional sins committed by Christians throughout history, they turn a blind eye toward the consistent and continuing embrace of violence and intimidation displayed by Islam.

In the sanitized world created in the minds of extreme leftists, the only group deserving of derision is populated by those with a faith in the Holy Bible. While it is certainly the right of these misguided souls to adhere to such a shortsighted worldview, it is absolutely unacceptable for these principles to be disseminated within the walls of public school.

Did You Know the Deficit Is Shrinking? Most Americans Don"t, Thanks to Shameless Deficit Hawk Propaganda

The deficit is down 37.6 percent for the first 10 months of 2013. But half of Americans think it’s growing.

Remember all those deficit hawks who screamed that the federal deficit is spiraling out of control and must be stopped with spending cuts that have a funny way of hurting the pocketbooks of the most vulnerable Americans? Their excuse for ripping us off has been literally disappearing, but a new Google survey shows that not only do the vast majority Americans not know it — half of the public actually believes that the deficit is growing.

Here are the facts: The U.S. budget deficit has been shrinking at a rapid rate over the last few months. The deficit peaked at 10.2 percent of GDP in 2009, but over the past four quarters, it has shrunk to a mere 4.2 percent of GDP. What’s more, the Congressional Budget Office predicts that the deficit will fall to 2.1 percent of GDP in 2015.

Why such a disconnect? Unfortunately, disgraceful propaganda has left the public misinformed and confused.

Over in Economic Wonderland, the deficit hawk duo of Alan Simpson and Erksine Bowles have made a second career over the last several years wildly exaggerating the deficit issue and scaring Americans into thinking that deep cuts in the federal budget were necessary for the economy. The reality was just the opposite. If these two had ever sat down to read John Maynard Keynes, whose work is vital to understanding how to respond to economic crises, they would have known that cutting the federal budget when the economy is weak actually slows it down even more.  Yet to this day, Simpson and Bowles continue waging battle for a “grand bargain” that would shred the social safety net and cost many Americans their jobs by requiring trillions of dollars to be cut from the federal budget over ten years. All in the name of a “problem” that doesn’t even exist.

Deficit hawks like Simpson and Bowles, and their grand funder, hedge fund billionaire Pete Peterson, go on promoting the nonsense that the deficit is the major economic problem of 2013 despite the obvious facts and a growing consensus from economists that such a claim is utterly absurd. Incredibly, they do it even after the faulty work they relied on to make their case – a paper produced by two Harvard economists, Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff – was discredited by a mere grad student in one of the great academic revelations of our time. Even conservative economists are bowing to reality. The folks over at the conservative American Enterprise Institute, for example, have come to the conclusion that austerity is a terrible idea and that without proper stimulus, the U.S. economy would look a lot more like Europe’s, where individual countries without sovereign currency have been forced to go the austerity route. It’s getting increasingly hard to deny that things have gotten pretty ugly over there because of deficit hawks and their ilk.

But deficit hawks are paid well to misinform the public. They write reports. They get corporate honchos to help them run campaigns with innocent-sounding names like “Fix the Debt.” They build websites. They write articles. They hold conferences. They pay off think tanks – even progressive ones – to play ball with them.  And the corporate dominated major media frequently is happy to play along. On it goes, until the lies repeated to the public take on the ring of truth.

So it’s no surprise that the public is not aware of the important news that the deficit is shrinking. Or that it is shrinking precisely for the reason progressive economists have been saying all along. When you have a recession, you have to juice the economy through government investment. That, in turn, reaps you the benefit of more money in people’s pockets, which leads to more jobs, more tax revenue for the government, and less reliance on social safety net programs like unemployment insurance or food stamps. If the original stimulus package had been bigger, the deficit would have shrunk even faster.

The deficit hawks have been more than spectacularly wrong. They have impacted policy in a way that turned the attention of Washington away from what it should have been focused on all along – jobs. Instead of a deficit commission, Obama should have called for a jobs commission to address the fact that hard-working people have not been able to find jobs to feed their families because of a Wall Street-driven financial crisis.

One might hope that the reality emerging will help squelch the calls to recklessly cut government investment in the economy. But there’s a big problem: Deficit lies benefit the 1 percent in the short-run. Rather than shrinking the deficit, what the short-sighted, greedy rich in America really want to shrink is their tax liabilities, which is why they don’t want to pay for things like education, infrastructure, and social safety net programs that benefit the population and ultimately help keep the economy humming.  The financiers among them would also dearly like to privatize things like Social Security so that they can collect fees on American retirement accounts. The corporate honchos like the way austerity drives up unemployment and drives down wages because they hold the mistaken view that keeping workers stressed and vulnerable is good for their bottom line. They want people like Larry Summers to head the Federal Reserve, who, while in the White House as the president’s chief economic adviser , famously presided over a stimulus program many economists warned was way too small.

In the fall, will deficit hawks in Congress manage once again to hold the American economy hostage? Or will reality finally rear its head? Facts have a tough time competing with well-funded mythology.
